voices Cartoons Regarding recently run “cartoons” in The Gabber Newspaper, I see them as unsuitable for the quality and spirit of The Gabber Newspaper, particularly the drawing of the unfit police officer in issue #2837 (possibly a slam to Gulfport’s finest) and the placing of the guy wearing the “Gulfport” underpants heading for the saw (that was bizarre). While both “cartoons” make a point, they lack the class of The Gabber Newspaper and discernible artistic quality. I am surprised if you have not heard from other readers concerning these additions to your fine publications. —Susan Masztak, Creator of the “Silas” comic strip which had formerly appeared in Paradise News, Gulfport
Trump “This man should not be sentenced to prison, he should be committed to a psych ward, where he will be safe. So too will be this country.” Had she placed a period after the word prison, I would agree. I wonder what she thinks when she sees “various clips” of Joe Biden and contemplates the current state of this country. —Alan James, Gulfport
Thanksgiving Dinner Food reporter Morgan Banno, tried to have some fun by comparing Gulfport City Councilmembers to Thanksgiving side dishes. Her humor was insulting and fell kind of flat and bitter, like a souffle made with rancid butter. She likens Mayor Sam Henderson to a comfort food, but lacking substance. Likewise for Ian O’Hara. Banno’s take on the remaining three Councilmembers was more insulting than funny. She means to take a dig at April Thanos by comparing her to ambrosia, which
REMEMBER: Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
Banno describes as an “acquired taste,” and a “cacophony of canned ingredients.” However when made with fresh and real ingredients, ambrosia is the food or nectar of the Gods, according to Greek mythology. So the comparison is really a compliment. Banno then compares Christine Brown to candied yams, which she describes as “vintage.” And Paul Ray is like over-salted green
bean casserole made from canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and packaged fried onions. Surprisingly, in Banno’s Thanksgiving Dinner, she leaves out the main course, Turkey. Maybe she is the turkey: an old bird, overcooked, dry, tough to eat, and hard to swallow. Pair with lots of water to wash it down and out. For dessert, try Pepto Dismal. —Lenny Guckenheimer, Gulfport

Intentionality We believe these achievements are the result of the intentionality. We are intentional about how we connect with our students and the opportunities we are providing them. Recently, AVID students were able to visit FAMU and FSU on a college field trip. While at FSU students were able to visit with BCHS alumni who graduated recently, one of them being the 2022 salutatorian Jeremiah Daniels. We have also been intentional about providing opportunities for our students to connect with community partners. Members from our Pirate Parent group regularly visit campus to greet students in the morning and/or to meet with them during lunch. You will recognize a Pirate Parent at lunch by their bright gold Pirate Parent polo or by the students who are seated with them learning to play chess.

We need volunteers in a variety of areas that include the College and Career Center, athletics, fine arts and even clerical assistance in the office. • Mentor. Mentoring can have the biggest impact on young lives. BCHS receives mentors for students in the Take Stock In Children Scholarship program, students who struggle, students connected to the College & Career Center and/or students engaged in special interest clubs like Girlfriends or the 5,000 Role Models club. You may ask, how can you support us? Here are three simple ways: • Share the good news in this email with your family, friends and community. • Follow us on social media (Facebook and Instagram). • Attend BCHS events and athletic contests when you hear about them. Thank you for your time, be kind and pass along that Pirate Pride!
And lastly, we are intentional about celebrating students success. After quarter one report cards were released, administrators and campus leaders visited classrooms to pass our Honor Roll and Principal’s List certificates. Students who were recognized, also received a ticket for free ice cream. Community and Parental Opportunities BCHS is part of your community. We welcome you to be part of our school. Gulfport and St. Pete Gifts for This Holiday Season When you holiday shop locally it’s like giving two gifts, one to the recipient and one to your community. Experts calculate that when you buy from local businesses, instead of large corporations, as much as 70 cents of every dollar spent stays in the community, building wealth which increases the standard of living. Shopping locally shows pride for your city, and also supports future growth. Sometimes we give the gift of luxury, purchasing something for someone that they would never buy themselves, while other times we give an item that serves necessities and functionality. The featured gifts represent additional layers to the concept of local. These gift ideas are locally sold, locally made, locally sourced and/ or sustainable by being recyclable, upcycled, or handmade.

Birdcage Homes
Pinellas Point’s Two-Story Frame and Block Homes Located at the tip of the Pinellas Peninsula and the southernmost portion of St. Petersburg is Pinellas Point. My late wife and I moved there in 1968 and purchased our first and only house on 69th Avenue South. The Point, like many neighborhoods in St. Petersburg, is unique and quirky. It boasts pink concrete streets, two-story frame and block homes known as birdcage homes, and a Tocobaga Indian mound. Our birdcage house, like the other 11 on Pinellas Point Drive and 69th Avenue South, was unusual both in its design and construction. Inspiration for these 1950s homes came from similar houses in the Philippines. They generally featured an open design with an open staircase and screen porches on both stories. Also, they had jalousie windows as well as partial wooden jalousie walls on the upper story to allow air flow. The interior cabinet walls often were elevated so that air could flow under them. Like many homes of that vintage, ours featured a small kitchen. Birdcage Homes in Pinellas Point A partition wall separated our kitchen from the living room, which did not go to floor or ceiling, once again allowing for air flow. These homes were constructed on a steel frame with poured concrete floor slabs on both stories. The upper story was framed in tongue-andgroove cypress supporting a 4 1/2-inch-thick white cedar tongueand-groove ceiling with no gap between the roofing material and the ceiling boards, except for a small crawl space under the peak of the roof. This design eliminated the possibility of the roof sagging, presumably extending its life. The idea behind the open construction was to stay cool without air conditioning. We eventually, however, replaced the jalousie windows and installed central heat and air. This was no easy task

since it required cutting through the thick concrete slab supporting the upper story. We had a dog at one time who loved to tear through the upstairs screen, roll down onto a bush, and take off. Replacing the screen with a wall solved that problem. Our daughter now owns the home. Throughout the years, renovations took place with new additions, enclosing the screen porches with red cedar walls, and replacing the small kitchen to create a modern open design. The use
of cypress and cedar rather than wall board as well as the concrete slabs saved us a few times when water came in. One time an upstairs toilet stuck on and plugged up during the night. The water ran down the stairs and into an old piano. No worries and no damage: I cut the piano in half and used it as a rolling musical tool chest. The tool chest music was not great, but it was a unique feature. I suspect that our old house will still exist long after I have departed to my reward.

Lock Your Cars
Police Ask for Help Stopping Gulfport Car Thefts By Mike Sunnucks
PIXABAY
Police ask people to lock their cars and not leave keys in the car. Gulfport’s had 33 stolen cars in 2023.
Some Gulfport residents continue to leave their cars and other motor vehicles unlocked — sometimes with the keys inside them. That’s making life easier for car thieves and burglaries — and busier for police. Two cars were recently stolen in Gulfport along with burglaries from vehicles, according to the Gulfport Police Department. That includes a BMW, which was left unlocked and with the keys inside, according to the Gulfport Police Department. Gulfport has had 33 motor vehicles stolen so far in 2023, with another 10 attempt car thefts, according to GPD Sergeant Thomas Woodman.
Police have recovered 16 of those stolen cars, he said. GPD also reports 46 burglaries from cars, trucks, and other vehicles, with another six attempted vehicle burglaries. A 2020 Nissan Altima was stolen during the early morning hours of Nov. 11 near 9th Avenue South and 51st Street South. Police said keys from the car had been stolen earlier the same week in a burglary. Two days later, on Nov. 13, a woman called police and “said that she woke up to the sound of her vehicle in the front driveway being started,” GPD said in an announcement. That vehicle is a 2008 BMW X5,

Woodman told The Gabber Newspaper. “When the victim looked outside she saw her vehicle being driven off. The victim left her vehicle unsecured with her key also inside the vehicle,” GPD said. The following day, Nov. 14, a Chevrolet pickup truck was burglarized overnight near 19th Avenue South and 59th Street South. Police said the caller said “nothing of value was taken” and he did not wish to pursue any charges. Another pickup truck — an unlocked Ford — was burglarized Nov. 15. A bag was stolen. Police processed the truck for fingerprints but did not find any, according to GPD. Woodman said it does not appear the recent string of burglaries and thefts are connected — but they are still being investigated. “Many different juveniles and groups break into and steal vehicles (mostly unlocked with keys inside). Until the investigations are completed, I cannot definitively say,” he said. No arrests have been made in the cases.

Treat Your Trees With Care
Council Approves Gulfport Tree Ordinance If you’ve been to a Gulfport City Council meeting recently, you’ve probably learned a bit about trees. They seem to sprout up at every meeting, and for good reason. Gulfport has been a member of Tree City USA for 25 years. This program is run by the National Arbor Day foundation to provide communities with a plan to build a tree canopy in the city. At the Nov. 21 Council meeting, trees stole the show. Early in the meeting, Justin Shea, the Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor, along with City Horticulturalist Toffer Ross, made a presentation. Together, they ushered in a new era for Gulfport, proclaiming Dec. 1 as Gulfport’s Arbor Day. National Arbor Day is typically celebrated in April. This proclamation was supported by a PSA developed by Shea, starring Ross and Mayor Sam Henderson. On Dec. 1, at 3:45 p.m. the city will host a celebration behind the Gulfport Recreation Center. This will include the planting of a green buttonwood, a tree native to Gulfport. Along with this, residents who bring an ID or water bill will receive a South Florida slash pine. “We’re bringing the gift of trees to the community,” said Shea. Those who receive trees will also get a brochure with information on how to care for them. The City’s Recreation department will be there to talk about the trees. Gulfport Teen Council will serve refreshments.

At the Nov 21 council meeting, the council approved Gulfport Tree Ordinance 2023-12.
Nov. 21 meeting, Council unanimously approved Ordinance 202312. The new ordinance follows three basic guidelines: • Increase the amount paid to the “Tree Fund” from $100 per inch to $125. The tree fund allows the City to buy new trees to plant on City property. The inches refer to the diameter at breast height of the tree.
• Adopt a new approved tree replacement list, with specific trees approved for planting. “This went well. Everyone wants to get to a good place,” said Mayor Henderson. “I have a background in environmental science, so I’m glad to see that we care about improving the tree canopy.”

The original proposal included changes that would make it significantly more difficult for people to voluntarily remove trees from their property. arts Meet Mason Clark
Stetson Professor by Day, Singer by Night My girlfriend and I went out with the simple intention of getting some work done. We walked into the North End Taphouse, ordered our drinks, and searched for two seats in the shade. A few minutes later, a man walked up on stage in a Bruce Springsteen-like outfit. He stood on stage in his white t-shirt, ripped jeans, and red bandana in his back left pocket. He slung his Ovation guitar over his shoulder, and began to speak to the crowd. Mason Clark moved from Indiana two months ago. For five years he practiced law, but moved to Florida to teach privacy law at Stetson University. His wife, Tiffany Kim, is also a lawyer, who served three tours in the military, mostly stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Mason’s Musical Life Clark began his musical life as a bluegrass fiddler, eventually picking up guitar around the age of 12. He played in various bands through high school and college, but his solo career began in Gulfport. Despite how much he enjoys performing, his true passion lies in songwriting. “If I ever move, it would be for song writing,” said Clark. “I never had aspirations to be a rock star.” Clark uses his song writing talent to connect people with the experiences of others. That is why he was performing at the North End Taphouse on Nov. 11 during their Veterans Day celebration. From 2-6 p.m. a portion of the proceeds from the bar were donated to Heaven on Earth for Veterans, Inc. The last song he performed before taking a break is a song he wrote with his friend, who is a veteran. “No matter who started the war, troops go and fight,” said Clark, before the song. He uses his song writing ability as an opportunity to discuss the various issues that veterans face. “The thing that gets lost in the pol-

itics of all of this is that kids sign up to go and be on the front lines,” said Clark. “We don’t take care of these kids and vets when they come back. Even if people spend $500 in these few hours, those are supplies we can buy for veterans.” His wife is particularly proud of his efforts. “It’s amazing that he started playing again,” said Kim. “He isn’t a veteran, but he is super talented and uses that to capture these experi-

Throughout the performance, he made sure to encourage the crowd to go and buy more food and beer from the bar. “What is better than this. You get to come and drink and listen to music and celebrate a good cause,” said Clark.

food Up Your Gluten Game
The Crumb Factory on St. Pete’s Central Avenue By Morgan Banno
MORGAN BANNO
Everything is fresh at The Crumb Factory.
I’m a total sucker for fresh bread. I’ll throw down on just about any freshly baked carbohydrates — I’m not picky. In all fairness, I don’t often splurge on these refined delights because I try to stick to my healthy eating plan when I’m training, but I do make exceptions. I have to admit, my body feels better when I don’t eat gluten but sometimes, it’s too good to pass up. Thankfully, The Crumb Factory on Central Avenue is the perfect place to feed a gluten fix. (Sorry in advance to anyone with gluten allergies or intolerances. I appreciate your pain!) Between the artisan sourdough loaves, French pastries, numerous sandwiches, and giant salads, I can understand why this daytime café has such a cult following. Love for Community The Crumb Factory opened in 2021 in the space formerly occupied by Rae Rae’s Café in west St. Pete. It is spearheaded by husband and wife duo, Pablo and Katie Mardones, who bring nothing but pure passion for bread making to this quaint eatery. Pablo, originally from Chile, has
20
years of experience in the worlds of food and hospitality. His artisan bread program at The Crumb Factory showcases a variety of items but he focuses on quality, scratch-made sourdough loaves. Pablo imported his bread oven from France to ensure the best leavening of his products. His wife, Katie, a Stetson Law graduate, says The Crumb Factory is the expression of her and Pablo’s love for one another and their commitment to the community. From the moment you step inside the bakery, you’re met with yeasty aromas tangled within the scent of fresh coffee. I stopped in my tracks to take in the bakery case ladened with sourdough baguettes, multigrain loaves and croissants. But the carbs don’t stop there. House-made cruffins (a cross between a croissant and a muffin), scones, cinnamon buns, and sweetly-filled danishes also beckoned. I wanted everything. The Crumb Factory I sampled a butter croissant ($4), and it was so soft and flaky, I swear I could taste the butter in every bite. I also tried the avocado toast ($10.50)
served on mixed seed sourdough topped with bright beet hummus, fresh avocado mash, cucumber, tomato, toasted pumpkin seeds, and micrograms. It was out-of-thisworld delicious with all of the fresh toppings, and the pumpkin seeds really brought out the flavor of the seeded bread. I ordered the caprese panini ($10) with fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil pesto, and balsamic glazed, which I highly recommend. Their list of sandwiches includes everything from chicken salad, grilled cheese, Reubens, and Mediterranean-inspired eats for vegetarians and carnivores alike. And no meal is complete without a salad and The Crumb Factory’s Quinoa Salad (with fresh veggies, hard boiled eggs, and feta cheese, served with lemon dressing and sourdough points — $12). In addition to café fare, they serve both hot/cold coffee and espresso drinks, as well as beer, wine, and tea. You can order online for pickup or get all your goodies delivered via GrubHub, Uber Eats, and Doordash. 5701 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Mon.-Sun., 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. 727-6239830, crumbfactorybakery.com.

Good, Old-Fashioned Comfort Food
Top Tastes: Where is the Best Inexpensive Comfort Food? The days are getting shorter, the holidays are looming, and winter on the horizon. This is the time of year when most of us shift our eating habits away from light salads and breezy, summer tapas to heavier, more filling dishes as we prepare to hibernate. Winter may bring the perfect Florida weather but I can’t shake the desire for classic, comfort food this time of year. In this installment of The Gabber Newspaper’s “Top Tastes,” we went in search of good, old-fashioned comfort food in the St. Pete area — like mom and grandma used to make. Think chicken pot pie, meatloaf, and pot roast. (This is not to be confused with Southern soul food, which we’ll highlight in a future article.) Armed with some adventurous taste testers, I headed toward the Gulf Beaches in search of the best, inexpensive comfort food at Foxy’s Café, Dead Bob’s, and the Horse & Jockey Pub. Here’s the rundown of our sampling: Cheapest Entrées: Meatloaf Melt at Foxy’s Café ($9.39) When I think of comfort food, meatloaf is the first think that comes to mind. Granted, I never ate it as a kid but generations before me sure did, and they ate a lot of it. You’ll find it on the menu at nearly any old school diner and Foxy’s Café (while not a diner, per se) serves theirs as a melt. It’s a no-thrills sandwich: a quarter-inch slab of (dry) meatloaf, with lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese and mayo, all sandwiched between toasted rye bread. We loved the price (and the coleslaw side) but this melt just misses the mark. The meatloaf itself was much drier than we had hoped for, so thank goodness for the fresh veggies and mayo. Points to Foxy’s for actually melting the cheese, though. But at $9.39, you get what you pay for. I recommend skipping this melt entirely and going straight for the key lime pie ($4.29). But if you’re really craving comfort on a plate, get Foxy’s Sloppy Joe ($9.29) instead. 160 107th Ave., Treasure Island. Mon., 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Tues.-Thurs., 7

The chicken pot pie at Horse & Jockey pub in South Pasadena is divine.
a.m.-10 p.m.; Fri. 8 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sat., 7 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sun., 7 a.m.-3 p.m., 727363-3699. Biggest Portion, Cheapest Drinks: Dead Bob’s Pot Roast Dinner ($11.24) For a hearty, meaty dinner, you have to try Dead Bob’s pot roast. The meat itself was so tender, it fell off of our fork. There was enough gravy to add texture and flavor to the meat without drowning it out in a congealed mess (which is usually what I get when ordering pot roast at a restaurant). The mashed potatoes were creamy, well-seasoned, and speckled with red potato skin — obviously house-made. But the broccoli! The broccoli was softly cooked but still had crunch, and it was doused in the most flavorful herb butter — adding to the overall comfort charm of the dish. Dead Bob’s is known for being dirtcheap affordable (with bargain drinks, too) and the food is surprisingly delicious given such the low price point. For a huge, inexpensive portion that tastes just like “mama’s Sunday dinner,” get Dead Bob’s pot roast. 6716 Central Ave., St Petersburg. Open daily 11 a.m.-3 a.m., 727-317-2627, deadbobsstpete.com. Best Flavor & Top Taste: Chicken Pot Pie at Horse & Jockey Pub ($15.95) You can’t go wrong with chicken pot pie. It’s a warm, classic, comfort

dish that uses simple ingredients but when executed perfectly, like at the Horse & Jockey Pub, it’s absolutely divine. The pub combines onions, carrots, peas, and red potatoes with chunks of white meat chicken for the ultimate filling. This personal-sized pot pie dishes a delicately seasoned and velvety velouté sauce that is creamy yet light. The entire thing is wrapped in puff pastry, for a tender-crisp crust, and is served steaming hot (literally). If you’re in search of a dish that will warm your soul and tickle your tastebud memories, you definitely need to hit up Horse & Jockey for their chicken pot pie. 1155 Pasadena Ave. S., South Pasadena. Sun.-Fri., 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sat., 11 a.m.-12 a.m. 727-345-4995, horseandjockeypub.us. Follow along as Morgan samples everything from salads and sushi, to Cubans and coffee in St. Pete, Gulfport, and the Gulf Beaches. This is a collection of food comparisons from a small sampling of area restaurants. By no means has she dined at every establishment that serves every category of food in this competition. And lastly, you won’t see her writing about Stella’s or the Salty Nun. It’s not that they don’t deserve the love, but her wife owns Stella’s and is part owner of Salty Nun, so in the interest of fairness (and marital harmony), those eateries don’t get to play.
