How Did Larry Die? Larry Enlow, a Gulfport musical fixture and co-founder of Enroy Foundation, a local arts charity, died on Sept. 11 after being admitted to Palms of Pasadena hospital with COVID and pneumonia. Enlow was 71 and was admitted to Palms of Pasadena with COVID, pneumonia and a sodium deficiency multiple times in August before his final admission Aug. 31, according to his widow, Maureen Kilroy. Kilroy was surprised to learn that Enlow’s death certificate only listed the cause of death as myocardial infarction — the medical term for a heart attack. COVID is not listed on the death certificate Kilroy provided to The Gabber. “He was admitted to the hospital with COVID pneumonia,” Kilroy said. No autopsy was performed on Enlow, according to his death certificate. Kilroy wants COVID added to her late husband’s death certificate and is also concerned about how coronavirus deaths are accounted for and tallied based on her experience.

Larry Enlow went into the hospital with COVID-19, but his death certificate says he died of a heart attack.

voices LGBTQ Gulfport Veterans Tell Their Stories It felt good to see our neighbor and friend Phyllis Plotnick on the front cover of the Gabber for Veterans week. We honor Phyllis, a woman who works for peace in her home, her community, as well as for world peace. How sad to see that you highlighting her service has caused such controversy. In 1919, after the “Great War to end All Wars” over 100 years ago, Armistice Day was set aside to remember that peace is achievable. Let us not forget Armistice Day (aka Veterans Day) wherever we are. Let us remember the horrors of that war and the women and men who served in the wars that followed and rededicate ourselves to fostering peace with justice for all peoples of our planet. –Edie Daly & Jackie Mirkin, Gulfport Two readers complained about The Gabber’s inclusion of LGBTQ military in their Veterans Day story. I want to congratulate you. There are one million LGBTQ veterans, and more than 60,000 LGBTQ service members currently serving our nation. We should celebrate all patriots who have been willing to sacrifice for our freedom. –C. Dixon Osburn, Washington, D.C. I was very sad to see The Gabber publish letters criticizing the coverage of gay veterans in Gulfport. Surely, this kind of discrimination and lack of respect for our gay veterans is not language The Gabber would consider consistent with its editorial policy. –Judy Lightwater, Gulfport When does written opinion become hate speech? In response to the letters to the editor of LAO and KG regarding The Gabber’s Veterans’ Day article, their comments about the gays and queer persons certainly sounds like hate. What makes these two retired veterans in the article any less than other veterans? Both featured individuals served

our country honorably while living through a time when their way of life was socially unacceptable. Yes, wake up! Times have changed. We honor all our veterans and the commitments they have made and are making for all of us and our nation. We thank all veterans for their service. It appears that The Gabber’s policy of not printing letters that include hate speech seems to have gone by the wayside with these letters. While hate speech is constitutionally protected, that doesn’t mean the community wants to see it in their news. Substitute an ethnic group or a color and these responses would have been equally as unacceptable. Shame! Shame! –Sally Otto, Dunedin Publisher’s Note: While our longstanding policy on letters did read that we didn’t allow “hate speech”, the lack of a legal definition of such has prompted us to replace that prohibition with “attacks on private individuals.”

BCYC Lawsuit Has Tentative Settlement Thank you for reporting on the Boca Ciega Yacht Club, page 12 of the 11/25 issue. There is some misinformation about the Club that we dearly would like to address, but this must wait until the final resolution of the legal matter...It should be soon. Meanwhile, I’m a Gulfport resident and member of BCYC since 1993. In all these years, BCYC has been an amazing resource for our community. From the national award winning Sea Scouts program, the children and adult sailing classes, the women’s racing program (The Rhumb Runners), The Family Fun Day to the annual holiday lighted boat parade to raise funds for Operation Santa. This annual gift drive, coordinated by the Gulfport Police Department, collects toys for the children of Gulfport whose holidays would not be as cheerful without the generosity of the community. news Fish Karma

Brantly McFarlin is a tournament champion, first mate and sixth grade student By Abby Baker

BRANTLY MCFARLIN

12-year-old Brantly McFarlin is the first mate on a fishing charter in St. Pete Beach and a repeat tournament winner.

Boca Ciega Bay fish fanatics may remember the young Brantly McFarlin from the Rock the Bay Inshore Fishing Tournament and Festival this November. The 12-year-old captain placed twice in the tournament, and it wasn’t his first rodeo. “I’ve been fishing with my dad a lot of my life,” McFarlin said. “I have brothers and sisters but they probably don’t like to fish as much as me.” Probably not, considering McFarlin’s multiple tournament wins – including leaderboard status at the Johhny Kellar Inshore Fishing Tournament and his position as first mate at St. Pete Beach’s Non Stop Fishing Charters. It’s on Captain Kevin Walton’s boat that McFarlin spends his summers and weekends hooking bait and “scaling the deck” as a young St. Petersburg angler. He wants to get closer to the Gulf, and any tips he collects get set aside for college.

4

“I remember him catching with a fake lure at the Pasadena Country Club when he was like two years old,” said McFarlin’s father, Drew McFarlin. “It’s all he’s ever really wanted to do, and he does it like it’s his job.” The father-and-son team credit one nontanglible source of success: fish karma. “There’s not really a secret to fishing. Every place is totally different,” McFarlin said. “But me and my dad always throw everything back.” Drew clarifies that fish karma is their private rule of releasing anything and everything that finds itself hooked, regarless of size – in the name of conservation. The act of catch-and-release is a fisherman’s way of playing tug of war with Florida’s fragile waterways, says Drew. Keep up with McFarlin’s watery adventures via his Instagram: @Backwaterbrantly.

numbers. The CDC and National Center of Health Statistics compile COVID case and death numbers via reports from state health agencies and directly from death certificates, according to the agencies. There have been more than 770,000 deaths attributed to COVID nationally including more than 61,100 in Florida, according to the CDC. There have been more than 2,700 reported coronavirus deaths in Pinellas County. HCA West Florida includes Palms of Pasadena and 13 other hospitals in the region including Northside Hospital and Largo Medical Center. The hospital chain also has some Florida political ties: US. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., was previously CEO of the hospital chain when it was known as Columbia/HCA. Scott resigned from that post in 1997 after Medicare overbilling resulted in $1.7 billion in fines against the hospital network. Florida has also been an epicenter of fights over COVID policies, protocols and mandates with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis critical of vaccine mandates from the Biden administration and battling some local jurisdictions and school districts over pandemic policies. The state recently approved measures fining employers who do not accept religious and medical COVID vaccine exemptions — setting up more court battles over the pandemic.

Life-Threatening Accident on Treasure Island A pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car while trying to cross Gulf Boulevard in Treasure Island Saturday (Nov. 27) evening. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reports a 2007 Dodge Caliber driven by Jamie McPherson, 45, struck Jude Rutkowski, 48, as Rutkowski crossed the road at 1st Street East. PCSO said Rutkowski was “in the middle of the intersection, not in the designated crosswalk” and was struck by the front driver’s side of McPherson’s vehicle. “Rutkowski was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries,” according to a PCSO announcement. The incident occurred at 6:42 p.m. and remains under investigation. Police said Rutkowski may have been “impaired at the time of the crash.” There have been several recent serious and fatal accidents in Pinellas County involving pedestrians struck by cars.

50 Affordable Housing Units Come to St. Pete

Innovare will provide apartment homes to some of the area’s lowest-paid renters Just south of downtown St. Petersburg, at 850 5th Ave. S., a 50unit mixed-use development called Innovare will offer housing for people who earn less than 60 percent of the area’s median income. Of those, a dozen homes reserved for residents whose incomes dip “very low,” according to the City of St. Petersburg’s website. The $17 million project is the result of a partnership between the City of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, including support from the Penny for Pinellas Affordable Housing Program. It’s part of the $23.4 million promised for the eight new developments by the Pinellas County Commission in 2020. Once completed, that means 884 units for low-income renters. Breaking Ground Though the St. Petersburg development has a long way to go, shovels broke ground on Nov. 5 as part of the official beginning of the project. Imam Askia Muhammad Aquil chair on the board of directors for the Collective Empowerment Group of Tampa Bay Area, Inc. says the development is greatly needed. “Affordable housing has been a

crisis for decades; it’s well known,” Aquil said at the groundbreaking event. “So the fact that all these partners were able to come together … this tremendous partnership is what it takes to get this job done.” The faith-based Volunteers of America of Florida will build the structure itself. “The development is going to hopefully change the lives of over 50 persons in our area that are the most vulnerable,” said Janet Stringfellow, Volunteers of America of Florida President and CEO. According to the City of St. Peters-

burg, the city’s median income – in 2021 – averages $72,700. However, a lot could change by the time Innovare is ready for renters. “The County’s [Pinellas] long-term goal is to build a coalition of municipalities, agencies, developers and other local leaders committed to a common vision for addressing one of the biggest challenges facing the community today,” reads the city website. The “biggest challenge?” You guessed it. Affordable housing.

Stetson is premiering a $25,000 scholarship for students, LGBTQ+ Advocates Gulfport’s Stetson Law’s Lambda Legal Society is creating the The Lambda Legal Society Pride Scholarship for members “who demonstrate a commitment to advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community in their studies, on campus, or in their work.” Stetson’s branch of Lambda – a national LGBTQ+ advocacy group – was recognized as an affiliate of the National LGBT Bar Association this February. “It feels great to be back on campus and more active than ever,” said Edson Abadia Jr., community outreach coordinator for Lambda at Stetson. The move launched the society into action. “We wanted to include everyone that’s advocating for the LGBTQ+ community,” he added. Abadia says the $25,000 scholarship is the first of its kind. Previous Lambda scholarships have been strictly for alumni; this one is for current students. The requirements: second- or third-year law students in the fulltime or part-time Juris Doctor program in good academic standing. “This scholarship, and building on it, will make sure that students of all backgrounds – including those from all neglected areas who might also

Kenneth’s Town

This Small Florida Town has Florida’s First Condos In 1947, Sidney Colen visited the area to see his parents while on his way to South America. He met a woman in Tampa named Ina; they married and started a family. Rather than continue his pan-American journey, Sidney decided to stay in Florida, where his family partnership opened new residential doors for thousands of Florida families and retirees. Colen arrived at a transitional time. St. Petersburg’s streetcar line had ceased operations in May 1949. Undeveloped lands in northwestern St. Petersburg beckoned people who embraced the postwar car culture. Another newcomer, James Rosati, moved to Florida in 1948. In November 1950, city leaders blessed Rosati’s plan to launch Tyrone Gardens, St. Petersburg’s first new subdivision since the Great Depression. This development included the same-named shopping center at Tyrone Boulevard and Ninth Avenue, the first large retail establishment away from downtown. A Family Affair As Rosati’s Tyrone Gardens took shape, Sidney Colen won approval to develop nearby areas. He named some of these communities after

his two young daughters (Merna, Sheryl, and Leslee). During the early 1950s, crews turned scrub into Leslee Heights, Merna Manor, Merna Park and Sheryl Manor. Colen met some prospective homeowners who wanted city amenities, but without higher city tax rates. Familiar with the cow pastures in the largely undeveloped Lealman area between St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park, he filed paperwork in January 1955 to establish the Kenneth Corporation, named for his young son. At that time, 58th Street north of 38th Avenue narrowed into

a pedestrian dirt path. Unable to reach an agreement with St. Petersburg for water service, Colen hired crews to dig wells and bury water and sewer lines in his Kenneth City development before they built the first model homes. Unincorporated (at the time) Kenneth City appealed to middle-income families who preferred lower property taxes. Colen worked with Herman W. Goldner – a St. Pete attorney – to draft the charter for this proposed town. Ironically, years after helping Colen create this separate municipality, Goldner served as St. Petersburg’s mayor from 1961 to 1967 and 1971 to 1973. Lawmakers passed the bill to create Kenneth City on April 30, 1957. At the time, this one-square-mile community had 300 homes and approximately 1,000 residents. Colen, Goldner and more than 450 residents gathered at St. Petersburg’s Coliseum in mid-June to celebrate the new town. At this event, young Kenneth unveiled a rendering of the proposed town hall and community center. A few months after the Sept. 20 groundbreaking, residents celebrated their town hall’s dedication on Jan. 5, 1958. As Kenneth City grew, Colen also filled an important need for people his parents’ age: He created Clearview Oaks, a place that

Villages Before The Villages

Today, many Floridians think of The Villages in Sumter, Lake and Marion counties if asked to identify a sprawling senior community. Long before The Villages existed, however, Sidney Colen designed large-scale settlements that catered to active adults and retirees. During the late 1960s, Colen acquired more than 400 acres in Clearwater for his On Top of the World adult community. Soon, groves near its internationally-themed buildings became businesses and residential subdivisions, such as the Countryside area that Clearwater annexed in the early 1970s. Colen acquired the Circle Square Ranch southwest of Ocala in 1975. At over 12,800 acres, his family has sufficient land to develop well into the 21st century. The Colens created a separate On Top of the World 55+ community on this Marion County property. To date, they have developed only a fraction of Circle Square Ranch. Sidney Colen passed away in 2009 at the age of 90. Ina passed away a decade later, at 94. Although no longer directly involved in Kenneth City, the Colen family manages the two On Top of the World communities, as well as other holdings that cater to both families with children and retirees.

required less maintenance than a standalone home, yet offered more amenities than most apartments. When Colen designed Clearview Oaks in November 1958, he developed one of the first condominiums in Florida. He opened these units along 58th Street near Joe’s Creek to offer comfortable accommodations for senior citizens. Classes began at Dixie Hollins Comprehensive High School (now Hollins High), adjacent to the town, in September 1959. Three months later, Kenneth City Plaza opened on the southwest corner of 54th Avenue at 58th Street North. The county assumed responsibility for Kenneth City’s water and sewer systems in 1964.

Kenneth currently serves as president of these enterprises. Although Kenneth does not live in the town named for him, this municipality

and the condos in Kenneth’s “cities” at Clearwater and Ocala vividly illustrate the Colen family’s role in transforming Florida since World War II.

PET PAL

Well, I Declare

We’re Not Lion

Let’s be real: You’ll probably never own a lion (Nor should you – just think of the cat litter bill!) but this little Lionus might just be the cure for what ails you. This one-year-old male tabby has a lion’s heart – and a soft lion mane to go with it!

This perfect Southern belle, Dixie, is as sweet as sweet potato pie, and if you make it right, that’s pretty darn sweet. She’s five months old and 27 pounds, and, like the South itself, she needs love but, well, it’s complicated. Call the shelter for details, but do call them, because Dixie really needs someone to love her.

Both pets adoptable at Pet Pal, 405 22nd St. S., St. Pete. 727-328-7738.

business Business Beat: Shopapalooza, Hurricane Eddie’s and Vegan Eats Here’s the scoop on all things local biz’ in Gulfport and St. Petersburg By Abby Baker

A Spot for Green Eatin’

“A peek into our future,” Good Intentions writes on Instagram.

“This was our biggest year by far,” said Shopapalooza and LocalShops1 founder Ester Venouziou.

An alternative to Black Friday, St. Petersburg’s Shopapalooza brought crowds of local shoppers to Vinoy Park for a small business festival this Nov. 27-28. Event founder Ester Venouziou is the woman behind LocalShops1, a small businesses directory that is the go-to spot for small-time buys. “Attendance was packed the entire weekend,” Venouziou said. “People felt safer for the first time since COVID-19.”

The owners of Gulfport’s Golden Dinosaurs, Black Radish and Nah Dogs have come together to create Good Intentions, a full-service vegan restaurant in St. Pete’s Grand Central District. The spot will sit at 1900 1st Ave. S. and feature a fresh menu of New American items. Lovers of the meatless Golden Dinosaurs Cuban sandwich, this is not the place for rehashing old favorites. The 3,700 square foot building will hold up to 100 people and feature beer and wine. Vegans and occasional vegans can expect the restaurant to open its doors in spring of 2022.

Hurricane Eddies Rolls In Bargoers in downtown Gulfport may have noticed a signage change by Salty’s. The Shore Boulevard drinkery is now under new ownership and has evolved into “Hurricane Eddies,” a spot with much of the same product and the same beach bar vibe. “This is the same Salty’s. We are under new ownership,” Hurricane Eddie’s wrote on its Facebook page. “New owners kept the staff. Some stayed on and some for their own reasons didn’t.” See the new specials and live music lineup at fb.com/Hurricaneeddiesgulfport A Place for Books

Books at Park Place is now at 6800 Gulfport Blvd. S. – not Park Place.

The Independent book store, Books at Park Place is no longer at Park Place, believe it or not. Owner Nancy Alloy says the move to 6800 Gulfport Blvd. S. in South Pasadena allowed for the shop to have more room for book signings and author events. “We’re happy with the place,” Alloy said. “We have a lot of talks from local authors.” The bookstore made its move in March of 2020, and suffered a COVID-19 related shutdown soon after. Finally, Books at Park Place is parked – and open – in South Pasadena.

KERRY KRISEMAN

One of the most interesting anecdotes in Kerry Kriseman’s book, “Accidental First Lady: On the Front Lines (and Behind the Scenes) of Local Politics,” comes well into her husband Rick’s political career. He’d just been elected mayor of St. Petersburg, and the couple was attending an art event. While her husband was talking with someone, a businessman approached Kriseman. “You’re really just arm candy, aren’t you?” Kriseman bristled, as any woman would. But she turned the moment around to talk about not only her husband, but her life. “The man who wanted to affix the ‘arm candy’ label on me got an earful about my longevity as a city resident, my family, my volunteer work and my job as the public relations manager for a nonprofit that serves people with disabilities,” she writes. Accidental First Lady is Kriseman’s first book, and it’s a fascinating look at the behind-the-scenes machinations of local politics. While she does describe some of the glamour

Kriseman describes not only life as a mayor’s wife, but some of the inner workings of local politics.

At the start of her husband’s tenure as mayor, someone accused Kerry Kriseman of being “arm candy.”

Another first lady – Michelle of being a political spouse, like atObama – said “Let our jobs and our tending events at the White House, lives speak for itself.” After reading she doesn’t gloss over the difficult Kriseman’s book about her time as times, either. the mayor’s wife, and considering Her son was targeted at school her community work with Southfor being both the mayor’s son and eastern Guide Dogs, Creative Clay, Jewish, a police officer tried to curry and her ovarian cancer diagnosis, favor with her in hopes of winning a it’s apparent that she promotion, and This book is a must-read has, indeed, spoken countless people attempt- for locals who want to her truth. Tiny Trees for a Cause

Three feet of mermaids, bourbon and rainbows By Abby Baker

Reason for the Season GHS board member Margarete Tober says the fundraiser will help sustain the Gulfport History Museum and reopening costs for the The Gulfport Arts Center, a resource for artists. “The museum was closed after the fire, and then with COVID-19 prolonging things, we really are in need of donations now more than ever,” Tober said. The fire was a porch flame that destroyed a portion of the wooden, 100-year-old structure on Labor Day, 2018. The museum was shut down from then until summer of 2019 and shuttered again during most of 2020 due to COVID-19. In 2019, GHS assumed the lease for the Gulfport Arts Center, which needed extensive interior work. The mini tree auction takes place at Stella’s on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.

DONNA GRIGLEY HASTIE

When the Gulfport Historical Society asked artists to create decked out holiday trees for its Festival of (Mini) Trees, they told artists to use their imagination. The artists did, and trees include Denise Keegan’s 24 bourbon ornaments and Cynthia L. Dugat’s tiny painter-inspired tree, featuring a palm-sized Bob Ross. “I’m a retired art teacher,” said Dugat. “So art is my life .. without art, my life is flat and uninspired.” It’s all in good fun, but for a reason.

Over 20 artists submitted three foot tall Christmas trees for an art auction that benefits the Gulfport Historical Society.

Gulfport’s ArtJones: Now and Then

The weekend studio tour is no longer just for Gulfport artists When Gulfport glass artist Brenda McMahon held the first ArtJones Studio Tour five years ago, it was a tight-knit group of Gulfport artists showing their home studios. This year’s tour (Dec. 4-5) boasts multiple artists (in fewer stops) in each studio, includes both St. Petersburg and Gulfport artists, and features emerging artists and seasoned pros. While much has changed, several original artists remain – Ray Domingo, a Gulfport artist known for realistic oceanic creatures, included. Domingo recalls the first year, when 300 people flooded his studio and promotional drawings for art brought excitement to once-quiet spaces. “I remember the first meeting we had about ArtJones, before it even had a name,” Domingo told the Gabber. “I suggested ‘ArtJones’ and I was met with blank stares. Now, you don’t even need to explain it.”

VIA RAY DOMINGO

By Abby Baker

Artist Ray Domingo has been involved with the tour since it began five years ago.

Emerging The ArtJones Scholarship Award – in its first year – doesn’t pay money, but McMahon waives the artist’s entry fee. Fused glass artist Michele Ingram, whose work centers around African tribal symbols, earned this year’s honor. Her African masks and fertility

Gulfport’s FREE, Self Guided, Professional 2021

dolls aren’t just pretty. “I wanted to visit my heritage,” Ingram said. “I love the history and stories of this work and how every piece has a use.” Ingram will exhibit alongside four other artists at Stop #2. See the who’s who of creators and map your tour at artjonesstudiotour.com.

Friday, December 3 Art Walking It’s that kind of Friday again. Join more than 30 artists each First Friday as they exhibit one-of-a-kind artwork up and down Gulfport’s Beach Boulevard. Fine artists and craftspeople, from emerging to professional, show up to chat with the public and sell art. Beach Blvd. S., Gulfport. 5-9 p.m.

Downtown’s Holiday Paddle Kayakers, this is your moment as Wandering Adventures brings a holiday paddle to town. The merriest paddle of them all launches from Demens Landing, then floats past The Dalí Museum, Albert Whitted Airport, The St. Pete Pier and North Straub Park. Dress up your vessels with lights, wreaths, and the whole debacle for a December sunset kayak, Florida style. Demens Landing, Bayshore Dr. & 2nd Ave. SE, St. Petersburg. 5:30 p.m. The Giving Trees Gulfport’s first-ever Festival of (Mini) Trees, a fundraiser for the Gulfport Arts Center and Gulfport History Museum, kicks off an artful weekend. Local artists donated their time and talent to personalize a score of Lilliputian holiday trees. Go see

‘em at the Gulfport Library – but on Friday afternoon, they move to the Courtyard at Stella’s for a live auction, where the trees go home with highest bidders. Stella’s Courtyard, 2914 Beach Blvd. S. 7 p.m. fb.com/ gulfporthistoricalsociety.

ends with Breakfast on the Deuces. Come down for food trucks, vendors and pop-up shops with every type of morning-time meal imaginable. The Deuces Corner, 833 22nd St. S., St. Petersburg. 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

South Pasadena’s Boat Parade The South Pasadena boat parade is back, and so are the bay’s most dazzling marine vessels from here to the North Pole. Huddle up, grab a Santa hat and watch the seaside fun. Boaters, head to the Saturday docktail for extra holiday cheer. Barbara Gilberg Habitat, 1600 Pasadena Ave. S., South Pasadena. 6:30 p.m. mysouthpasadena.com

Cheers Admit it, you’d love to have a say on whiskey other than Jameson. Coastal Creative is hosting a Whiskey Wonderland drink tasting that invites whiskey lovers to sample some of St. Petersburg’s tastiest (and strongest) cocktails. Jump on either the 11 a.m. or 4 p.m. time slot and remember to drink responsibly. Coastal Creative, 2201 1st Ave. S., St. Petersburg. 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Makers at the Morean Local gifters, look no farther than the Morean Center for Clay’s “Makers Market: A Joyful (Outdoor) Celebration.” The free event brings clay lovers to the center’s garden for demonstrations of the raku kiln, a scavenger hunt for kids, kiln openings, and a long list of working artists ready to show (and sell) their work. The Morean Center for Clay, 420 22nd St. S., St. Petersburg. 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Gulfport’s ArtJones One tour. Two days. 12 stops. 29 artists. ArtJones is Gulfport’s annual free self-guided tour, show and sale of original artwork. Happy sipping! Gulfport Senior Center, 5501 27th Ave. S. 5-7 p.m. Gulfport Tree Lighting The city calls it a tree lighting, but longtime Gulfportians know it’s really a block party that stretches along Clymer Park. Last year, Santa (and some city vehicles) took a driving tour through Gulfport’s neighborhoods, but – thankfully – this year the beloved Gulfport tradition returns to the park with music from the New Horizons Band, friends mingling, and – of course – Santa arriving on a fire

Francis J. McLaughlin, Jr. of Milton, Vermont and formerly of Gulfport, FL passed away in VT on September 26, 2021, following a long struggle with rheumatoid arthritis and ILD. He was surrounded by his loving wife and dear friends. Fran is survived by his wife Susan; his daughters Katie (Brandon) and Meagan (Joe), and their mother Nancy; his daughter Cari; granddaughters Josephine and Angelina; and brothers Robert (Lawrence DiBona) and William McLaughlin. THE NORTH END TAPHOUSE HAS A DELI-STYLE MENU WITH LOCALLY BREWED BEERS AND MORE.

We have live entertainment every day and Open Mic every Tuesday, located in the Village Courtyard.

Francis was born on September 29, 1951, in Upper Darby, PA. He spent his early years in the PA and NJ areas. After high school, he joined the US Navy and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He returned to civilian life, graduated from the USF (GO BULLS) and stayed in the St. Pete area. There he founded his general contracting business, FMI Inc., which he owned and operated until he semi-retired. Fran had a deep love for the water, be it ocean, lake or pond. He spent time on the USF Marine Science research vessel, Bellow, in the St Pete area and built his waterfront dream home in Gulfport on Boca Ciega Bay. He enjoyed fishing, skiing, snorkeling and scuba diving. He was an artist, musician and loyal friend. Fran is also survived by a myriad of friends, especially Jimmy and Becky; Carn; Jimmy and Tammy; Ronnie; Dale and Debbie; Vince and Laura; Scott and Loretta; Bill Jr.; Bob and Shelley; Steve and Kelly; as well as his FN Kat, Mambo #5, who were an extension of his family that he loved and as they did him. The funeral service and interment at Bay Pines National Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL will commence at 11 a.m. December 10. A celebration of Francis’ life will follow at American Legion Post 125.

"Her treatments got me back on the golf course" “I hurt my back playing golf. I went to the chiropractor. I went to the pain institute. I went to the spine institute. Nothing helped. The pain was debilitating, I went six or seven months without playing.” This was the case of John R. John would go on to explain that on a scale of one to ten his pain was well over a nine every single day. Regardless of your age, back pain, whether caused by a sports injury, longstanding arthritis or even specific conditions like scoliosis, can severely impact the quality of your life. In short, it stops you from doing the things you love with the people you love and that’s not a great way to live. On top of that, general practitioners, specialists and surgeons are all too eager to prescribe medications whose side effects are often detrimental to your recovery or recommend invasive surgeries that often have less than desirable outcomes. Fortunately for the people of the St. Petersburg, Dr. Rebecca Gibbons and her team at Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine have pioneered non-pharmaceutical, non-surgical innovative medical solutions that actually treat your pain! “My patients are also people who would normally require surgery but would either have a difficult time going under the knife or have simply decided that they would rather explore other options. There is more to healthcare than prescription pills, elimination diets and scalpels,” shares Dr. Gibbons. “By offering several integrative therapies we are able to combat your pain from several angles ensuring the best possible outcome.” John easily attested to this claim, “I highly recommend her to anybody. I am very thankful that I met Dr. Gibbons and she was able to help me because I can play golf again!”

Each new patient that comes to AAIM receives a comprehensive consultation and then is prescribed a very personalized treatment program that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. “While every treatment I perform is based on a framework cultivated from years of education and experience, no two cases are the same and so every person under my care is treated that way," tells Dr. Gibbons. One of the modern medical solutions Dr. Gibbons offers is O3 Regenerative Therapy™ which uses prolozone, a technique that involves injecting a solution of natural anti-inflammatory medications, vitamins and ozone into degenerated or injured joints, and into areas of pain. It’s with these injections that John found himself back on the green. "Unlike other solutions to chronic pain, O3 Regenerative Therapy™ corrects the pathology of the problem, allowing the body to heal itself naturally. This is a wonderful alternative to more traditional methods and incredibly safe and highly successful.” Dr. Gibbons and the team at AAIM are using O3 Regenerative Therapy™ to treat a myriad of chronic pain issues including neck pain, arthritis, knee pain, plantar fasciitis, chronic injuries and so much more!
