Stetson’s Scholarship for LGBTQ+ Law Students
Stetson is premiering a $25,000 scholarship for students, LGBTQ+ Advocates Gulfport’s Stetson Law’s Lambda Legal Society is creating the The Lambda Legal Society Pride Scholarship for members “who demonstrate a commitment to advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community in their studies, on campus, or in their work.” Stetson’s branch of Lambda – a national LGBTQ+ advocacy group – was recognized as an affiliate of the National LGBT Bar Association this February. “It feels great to be back on campus and more active than ever,” said Edson Abadia Jr., community outreach coordinator for Lambda at Stetson. The move launched the society into action. “We wanted to include everyone that’s advocating for the LGBTQ+ community,” he added. Abadia says the $25,000 scholarship is the first of its kind. Previous Lambda scholarships have been strictly for alumni; this one is for current students. The requirements: second- or third-year law students in the fulltime or part-time Juris Doctor program in good academic standing. “This scholarship, and building on it, will make sure that students of all backgrounds – including those from all neglected areas who might also

be LGBTQIA+ identifying will have the same opportunity to make a difference,” Stetson Law Dean Michèle Alexandre said. ”I just could not be more excited because that is the work that we are here to do.” For now, the funds are in the air. Members of Stetson’s Lambda are currently working with local nonprofit advocacy groups to develop a list of potential donors, as well as
alumni, law professors, staff, and the community, corporations and foundations, to fund the endowment in two years. Once the money is secured, the pride scholarship will continue indefinitely. Interested donors can find more information at stetson.edu/law/ campus-life/lambda-legal-society. php
