The ArtJones Open Studio Tour, one of Gulfport’s most anticipated art events, happens this weekend, December 5 and 6, featuring 12 artists in seven unique locations. What makes ArtJones different from other shows is that art lovers get to watch the artists at work in a wide variety of media including paint, glass, ceramics, photography, fiber and jewelry. All work is available for purchase. This year, ArtJones organizers made adjustments that promise to enhance the experience. “For the first time since its inception in 2016, we are bringing our open studio tour outside in an effort to address social distancing and health and safety concerns,” Brenda McMahon, of Brenda McMahon Gallery, one of the tour’s sponsors says. “The studio tour will still be at artists’ locations, but any demos will be brought outside.” Each year, a private artist collective hand selects artists who are proficient in their craft for the event. While some are new and rising stars, most have been working artists for more than 20 years, McMahon says. “We have two new artists joining us, as well as 10 returning artists. We are proud to welcome jewelers Doug D’souza and Berkeley Grimball. Many folks know Doug from his years of working here in Gulfport, and Berkeley is getting recognition for his sophisticated, remarkable designs.” This year’s studio tour features spectacular art by a mix of favorite artists and new faces – we’ve highlighted a few here. voices Dear Editor: Thank you for printing an article in the November 19 issue of The Gabber that originally appeared in The Weekly Challenger. The article, “Civic Groups Join Together to Save the Historic Melrose Clubhouse,” was enlightening to me. I knew nothing of the Clubhouse, its vital history and uncertain future. I visited the Melrose Clubhouse on the day I read the article and imagined the many civic groups that met there and the work done there to benefit so many. I certainly hope that this building, dedicated in 1942 and designated in 1993 by the City of St. Petersburg as a historic site, will be preserved. Thank you to the Gabber staff for partnering with The Weekly Challenger to bring us this article. – Phyllis Plotnick Dear Editor: I picked up my Gabber copy at the YMCA on 1st Avenue South. Lo and behold, there I was. My haiku has been published! Thank you very much. I feel very honored and certainly enjoyed reading all the other haikus about gratitude. Every day I remind myself of how fortunate I am. I love the Gabber’s neighborhood family ambiance, despite not knowing Gulfport very well or the wonderful folks you include. The love and dedication shines through. – Meg Keller

Sending a Letter to Santa? He Writes Back! Santa knows that this year has been tough on everyone, parents and children alike. He also knows that it’s not the best year for visits and pictures, but if you still want to chat with Santa, two local Gulfportians promise that every letter dropped off at this special Santa mailbox will be personally answered by the big man himself. Mr. and Mrs. Claus are calling for children of all ages to drop their wish lists and letters at 2304 51st St. S. To ensure the letters are answered, Santa requests each letter have a name and return address. This red, five-foot mailbox will be guarded and emptied nightly by Santa’s special helpers, Veronica DaSilva and Julie Stenstrom. “We just want to bring joy to people,” said DaSilva. “It’s fun to spread joy and keep the spirit of Christmas alive.” Last year, Santa’s helpers sent out over 100 response letters. DaSilva and Stenstrom wouldn’t mind a little extra help this year addressing all of

Shopping Small Makes a Big Difference

LAURA MULROONEY

LAURA MULROONEY

By Laura Mulrooney

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are well known dealhunting days to pick up gifts for the holidays. They come with a little controversy, though, frowned upon for exploiting employees along with focus on big-box stores that benefit a few individuals instead of whole communities. In an effort to redirect holiday money back to local economies, many organizations and communities now encourage folks to “shop small.” On November 28, LocalShops1, SIK Promotions, the City of Gulfport and the Gulfport Merchants Chamber brought Shop Small Saturday to Gulfport unlike any year before. After LocalShops1’s annual, weekend-long Shopapalooza was canceled, founder Ester Venouziou focused efforts on a one-day Shop Small Holiday Market in Gulfport. More than 100 local businesses benefited from Saturday’s event. “We’re so grateful for the support of all the shoppers who came out to support local makers and small businesses,” Venouziou told the Gabber. “This was a much needed boost – not only financial, but also emotional, and it came at a time when so many of us needed it the most. Please remember to continue to support local as much as you can.” “I want to give big thanks and appreciation to LocalShops1 and SIK Promotions,” said GMC President Barbara Banno. “They really aligned with our mission at the GMC, which is to bring business to our brick-and-mortar small business and I think all the businesses on the street would agree they saw an increase in business from this weekend’s event.” In all, said Banno, “Everything was perfect: the weather, the vendors and the event,” said Banno. “It just had this energy; it gave us a taste of normalcy that I think made it seem so much better.” SIK Promotions founder Suzie King echoed Banno’s sentiments: “It brought some normalcy and we supported small businesses. That was the whole point.” Mother-daughter participants Spencer and Angie Goodwin, of Spenny Lane, originally signed on as Shopapalooza vendors.

Beryl Oduor, a Kenyan native, is on a mission to help educate children in her home country. Part of the proceeds she earns from her fine gemstone jewelry goes to the Captain Silvery Academy, created by her late grandfather. Odour’s aunt in Kenya makes the beaded jewelry and ships it to her each week. “I like to support my home culture, so I bring in a lot of her work,” Odour said. “I then compensate my aunt for her art, hardwork and creativity and then send money every month to the school – so it goes full circle.”

Artist Iryna Okhota-Ahrens creates elaborate handcrafted jewelry, wall art and other accessories out of Turkish and Italian leather. Okhota-Ahrens studied the craft for years, beginning with simple floral pieces and expanding into more ornate work. Recently Okhota-Ahrens has focused on her newest passion, Picasso-inspired jewelry designs.

Mother-daughter team, Angie and Spencer Goodwin, create up-cycled vintage clothing. “They’re all one-of-akind reworked pieces made from 90% thrifted and reused items,” said Spencer. While Spencer does the thrifting, mom does the sewing, and the duo designs together.

Sarah Rockwell, left, made her friend Elke a discoball planter on whim as a housewarming gift. Little did the two ladies know they would then boogie their way into a business opportunity.

From left Mimi, Patty Bowers, Stephanie Boyle, Melanie Roberts, My LowBoy, Sondra Begerow and April Zolnierek at Skyway Dachshund Rescue, Inc., an all-volunteer rescue. “We adopt out 50 to 60 pups a year,” said President Stephanie Boyle. Patty Bowers adopted Mimi in 2012: “She’s been such a blessing.”

“We had a wonderful day at the event,” said Spencer. “It was technically supposed to replace Shopapalooza, so we were bummed that the event did not happen, but grateful to have had another market to pop up at.” Other vendors were also happy to finally be out on the streets and back in the public eye. “We were very pleased with the event yesterday. It was very well organized and participation was very good, but also safe with plenty of open space,” said President of Skyway Dachshund Rescue, Inc. Stephanie Boyle. “We were

very excited to be able to participate as this year has been pretty tough for us and so many others, especially small vendors. “Most of our fundraising is done through community events,” Boyle continued, “and since this is only the second event, and by far the largest, for us since the pandemic it was very key to our efforts to raise funds to cover the medical costs of the little ones entrusted to us. It was truly a lovely day.” Find these local vendors and more with this article at thegabber.com.

Keeping Up A-pier-ances In a time of so much destruction – we’re looking at you, Tropical Storm Eta – it’s nice to celebrate a little reconstruction. Folks are back to fishing and promenading on Gulfport’s Bert and Walter Williams Pier, which closed in July for its first major overhaul since opening in 1987. The city initially expected the repairs to take about three months, but during the course of the work, the city found further deterioration. City of Gulfport Public Works Director Tom Nicholls hoped the repairs would be done by mid November, and he wasn’t far off. On Wednesday, November 25, the City of Gulfport announced the reopening of Williams Pier after nearly five months of structural reconstruction and rehabilitation. Nicholls expects the repairs to hold up for 15 to 20 years, based on engineering company Cardno’s evaluation and structural assessment report done in March 2019.

“Minor repair activities will continue for the next few weeks, but we do not anticipate closing the

pier for these final items,” the City of Gulfport stated in a press release November 25.

obituaries Belkin, Vivian, 94, of Gulfport, Florida, passed away November 27, 2020 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Vivian was born in South Bend, Indiana to Samuel and Celia Belkin on February 6, 1926. She graduated with a degree in teaching from Wayne University and worked as a physical education teacher for the Detroit and Oak Park Public School Districts for over 25 years. She was respected and admired by her peers and loved by her students for her forthright, honest and caring manner. The evidence of her bond with students is seen in the fact that many of them continued writing and visiting her in Florida five or six decades after having her as a teacher. Vivian was a life-long Detroiter until she relocated to Gulfport, along with her mother, sister, brother and sister-in-law in 1977. Vivian loved to travel with her sister, Madeline and, together, they visited six of the seven continents. Her favorite trip was a multi-week-long safari to Africa, which she took at a time when safaris were still fraught with

adventure and danger. Vivian especially loved gambling and visiting casinos, not only in Las Vegas, but also throughout the South. She was an avid golfer and greatly enjoyed the time she spent with her nieces and nephews. Sanding Ovations Beats the Odds to Return to the Beach

LAURA MULROONEY

By Laura Mulrooney

LAURA MULROONEY

LAURA MULROONEY

“This sculpture depicts William ‘Wille’ Mammoot the Third, the most celebrated mammoth jockey of all time. Well known for all his innovations in the field of mammoth racing. Some historians even argue that the wooly mammoth was in fact named after Willie himself,” reads the stone in front of the sculpture of a seven-foot-tall wooly mammoth. Who are we to argue facts written in stone?

Peatcasso shows off in art class with this sculpture of a voluptuous, lady cyclops.

Thank goodness for Treasure Island’s sprawling beach. The outdoor landscape allowed for Treasure Island’s 12th Annual Sanding Ovations festival, themed “Sandhenge,” to go on as planned November 19 through 22, just behind the Bilmar Beach Resort. Like many events this year, it almost didn’t happen. However, with plentiful

handwashing stations and sanitizer, portalets replaced by trailers with running water, and Space Force volunteers enforcing CDC guidelines, the show went off without a hitch. Due to travel restrictions, the festival wasn’t an international sand sculpture competition, but an exhibit crafted by those who were able to partake. Nine sculptors from North America – as far as Canada and

Washington state and Massachusetts – and all over Florida turned Treasure Island into a paleolithic wonderland. But COVID-19 wasn’t the only obstacle this year. Copious flooding from Tropical Storm Eta, which hit Gulf Coast shores Wednesday, November 11, also threatened the sculptors’ natural canvass; luckily the water receded in time for the show to go on.

For two days in Gulfport, you’ll have your chance to peel back the layers of the creative process, meet artists and see first-hand how they get from an empty slate to a finished piece. The artists on the ArtJones home studio tour exhibit their finished products in Gulfport, along the Gulf Coast, and throughout the country – but they find their muse in Gulfport. Once a year, they open their studio space for two days in December. Come meet them, see how they work, and

experience the process of art. Various locations throughout Gulfport. Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. & Sun., 11 a.m.-4 p.m. artjonesstudiotour.com. SD MR Waterfront Grand Slam If there’s anything better than flour, milk, eggs and butter mixed together and heated on a griddle, topped with butter and maple syrup, well, we’d love to hear about it. But until we do, you’ll find us at the Lions Club pancake breakfast this Saturday. In addition to all-you-can-eat (note that it’s not all-you-should-eat) they’ll dish up scrambled eggs, sausage links, coffee, tea and OJ. Kids 12 and younger eat for half-price. The clubhouse fronts Boca Ciega Bay, so grab a platter of cakes and feast on the patio waterside. Seating is pandemic-style: 50% capacity. Bring a toy to donate to the Gulfport Police Department’s Christmas program for families who could use a little extra help this year. To-go meals available. crime Gulfport Police Investigate Death of Three Men By Gabber Staff

KAT WILCOX

The Gulfport Police Department is investigating after a neighbor found three men dead in a home on the 2800 block of 49th St. S. Monday morning, November 23. According to a media release from the GPD, cousins Scott A. Miller, 46, and Jeffrey S. Miller, 51, were at their Gulfport residence with mutual friend, Bailey J. Frohbose, 39, of Dunedin. Neighbors reported no signs of trouble and said the men were listening to music the night before. Police found no indication of trauma or forced entry; the doors were closed and locked,

and police say that firefighters did not detect carbon monoxide in the home. The evidence so far indicates that the men were drinking alcohol while using illegal narcotics. According to police, the Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct toxicology tests to determine what substances the men may have ingested. Anyone with relevant information should contact Detective Jennifer Crowson at 727-893-1043 or visit crimestoppersofpinellas.orgto submit an anonymous tip.

arts

ArtJones continued from cover

Find a tour map at artjonesstudiotour.com. Anna Ayres

ANNA AYRES

Painter Anna Ayres’ childhood in rural Vermont gave her an early appreciation for the outdoors. This reverence for the natural landscape continues to inspire her work today. A love of travel, and a new-found appreciation for art while in college, led her to discover acrylic painting and then the rich, expressive qualities of oil on canvas several years later. Predominantly self-taught, Ayres received a Creative Pinellas Emerging Artist Grant in 2019 and participated in her first ArtJones Open Studio Tour that year. Her work is at the Brenda McMahon Gallery, where she recently finished her first mural work on the columns outside the gallery. “As a painter, I create compositions of plants, birds, trees, water, fields, mountains and flowers. Nature, in its exquisite balance, demonstrates harmony. It tells us stories of simplicity, present-moment awareness and survival. Each of my paintings is an interpretation of what I feel from the natural world.”

Doug D’souza

DOUG D’SOUZA

For more than 20 years Doug D’souza has created jewelry in a variety of metals, with an array of patterns, textures and colors. Born in Mumbai, India, he says the rich colors and textures he experienced there greatly influenced his work. After a life-changing accident, he learned metalsmithing from books and video tutorials. D’souza says he’s drawn to the meditative aspect of spending hours at his workbench, creating his pieces. “In the past two decades I have mostly sold my work online and through galleries and specialty shops,” D’souza says. “This year I’m honored to be a new member of ArtJones, and look forward to sharing my work with the community.”

Monika Watson

MONIKA WATSON

20

Monika Watson was born in Austria and moved to Paris to work and study art in her 20s. Her unique works usually start with a small sketch or the scribbles of an idea before she begins working with the clay. She makes shapes and images with the clay, dries and fires the designs in a kiln, then glazes and fires them again. She paints the background on the canvas and lays out the shiny clay pieces, conjuring in her head a detailed image of the painting to come. Watson adheres the ceramics to the canvas with acrylic gel, then paints in the detail that connects the work into one integral piece. “My paintings are a mixture of acrylic paint and my handmade fired ceramic pieces on canvas,” she says. “The look is a colorful 3-D texture and, depending on the light, the ceramic glazes shine with deep color. I have to say, I really like to work.”
