After two hours, the TowBoatU.S. crew was able to wiggle a stranded sailboat off Gulfport Beach, back into the water.

On Wednesday, December 2, Gulfport Marina Harbormaster Denis Frain organized a stranded sailboat recovery with TowBoatU.S. Two boats remained of the six stranded on Gulfport Beach after Tropical Storm Eta on November 11.

The owner of “Tocade” surrendered the boat to the city, giving them go ahead for salvage and removal operations.

With three 550 horsepower boats, TowBoatU.S. removed one of the two stranded sailboats. The salvage team wiggled the sailboat back and forth Boat continued on page 8

In addition to seasonal gift giving, the holidays herald a month of birthdays in our home: my dad, mom and myself all celebrate birthdays in December, and Barry kicks it all off on November 30. It’s a lot of gifts.

We’ve heard so much about the importance of shopping local: It keeps money in the community. It helps your neighbor keep food on the table. It preserves the character of your community. They need us now more than ever.

For Barry’s birthday this year, he asked for one thing: no presents. I know, I know, the man’s transcended this material world in the most annoying way.

Nevertheless, I agreed. But he didn’t say no cake. I had him on a technicality.

Enter Tina and Janet at Let It Be Ice Cream. I sent an ice cream cake idea to Tina, and shortly after Janet messaged me on Facebook, where we worked out the details. She made a custom batch of orange sherbet, and layered marshmallow cream between it and chocolate ice cream. It was the best cake ever and they had it ready on a day the shop was closed.

Before I picked up the cake, I had to mail a package, so I stopped at the Beach Bazaar. Their USPS system was down. Mike Fagan, one of the owners, took the package and suggested, “Why don’t I give you a call with your tracking number when it’s back up?”

My last stop was Rollin’ Oats, where I’d ordered groceries online. I called the store and they brought the groceries to my car. No Shipt or Instacart – just a simple phone call.

The cake, the tracking number, the groceries – that’s not just amazing customer service, that’s small business. That’s local business. And it’s a big part of what holds our community together.

These reasons – and a multitude of others – led to the creation of our local holiday gift guide. It’s an A to Z guide, created with an eye to shopping small during a pandemic, and supporting the people who happily go out of their way every day to serve us.

We’ve been talking about how much small businesses need us. But that’s not really it. The truth is, we need small businesses.

voices Help for the Homeless?

Dear Editor: Recently there have been thoughtful discussions and concerns within our Gulfport community about homeless individuals either in our parks or beach area.

Regardless how these individuals ended living outdoors within our city, they need our compassion and attention to ensure they are safe and are offered opportunities to get the social services they need.

I have reached out to City of Gulfport elected officials and Police Chief Rob Vincent to request they seriously discuss a city plan that specifically addresses homelessness in the City of Gulfport. This is not a request to create a social services type agency, but a sound triaging effort that takes into account the many county-based programs to assist the homeless, as well as inter-city collaborations already in place throughout Pinellas County. For example, the City of St. Petersburg has a terrific and effective program called “Street Outreach Team.” In their webpage, they state: “Due to the success of the Street Outreach Team, four additional teams have been added in Pinellas Park, Tarpon Springs, Clearwater and Lealman.” Perhaps we can learn from these type of expanded programs and see what potential steps we can take right here in Gulfport. Perhaps in the next City of Gulfport budget process we can consider one less brand new police vehicle and dedicate some funds towards a Gulfport homeless program within our own Gulfport Police Department (how other cities do theirs).

Gulfport prides itself as an accepting city, welcoming diversity in all forms. Gulfport is also not immune to the struggles many face that may result in becoming homeless. My holiday wish is for this little city by the bay to take on this challenge, as we do with many other things, that regularly shines a light on who we are. – Yolanda Roman

news City Goes Month-to-Month on Boca Ciega Yacht Club Lease

It was a relatively full house at the Catherine Hickman Theater for the Tuesday, December 1 Gulfport City Council meeting, yet there was only one item on the agenda – renewal of the Boca Ciega Yacht Club lease.

BCYC members of the past and present filled the seats and nearly the entire two-hour meeting with commentary on why they felt the club is essential to the community.

Due to active litigation, the City of Gulfport and BCYC have not yet negotiated terms for a new lease for the club’s continued use of the waterfront property where the club has resided since the 1960s.

After a short discussion and many questions, council directed City Manager Jim O’Reilly and City Attorney Andrew Salzman to draft a month-bymonth agreement for BCYC to remain in place until the conclusion of the active litigation.

Council did not discuss the details of the agreement as they have yet to be decided.

Mayor Sam Henderson made a point to assure residents that Sea Scouts, the youth sailing program BCYC oversees, will still have a home in the community, even if the city does not agree to a longer lease for the club.

“The city is going to support the Sea Scouts as long as there are people willing to do it; we have options to do that,” Henderson said.

“That’s not something that will go away.”

Bike Trails Near Completion Gulfport Public Works Director Tom Nicholls announced that the Osgood Point Bike Trail and the extended county bike lane are open and ready for use.

easy access from Gulfport Boulevard, 55th Street and 58th Street near 23rd Avenue South.

“I had a chance to ride both of those trails in the last week,” said Henderson.

“It’s a great town for biking.”

According to Nicholls, a few more signs and pavement markings need to be placed to complete the project.

Pier Reopening Update As of Wednesday, November 25 folks are back to fishing and promenading on Gulfport’s Bert and Walter Williams Pier, which closed in July for its first major overhaul since opening in 1987.

While a few non-safety related items, such as paving and lighting, are still in the works, inspectors gave the city a thumbs up to reopen. Paving has been held up due to contractor, holiday and weather delays.

According to Nicholls, paving should pick back up in two weeks, and the city is hopeful the project will be fully finished, including lighting, in the first weeks of January.

Council Talks Mental Health The holidays can be hard for many, and this year has been especially cruel.

Councilmember Christine Brown asked O’Reilly if the city could regularly

post available mental health and drug addiction services on the city’s website and social media.

“Let’s not forget about the first responders that respond to these calls,” said Brown. “What they go through – emotionally, physically and mentally – it’s hard on them.”

“The holiday season is typically the toughest season mentally for people and of course, now we have COVID, which makes it even worse,” Councilmember Paul Ray said. “I just hope that everybody pays attention to family members and neighbors during this period of time, because depression isn’t always very noticeable, but it is treatable.”

Residents can expect a PSA on this from the mayor soon.

City of Gulfport Holiday Decorating Contest Apparently, Santa enjoys a good ol’ friendly competition.

The city encourages residents and businesses to decorate their homes and storefronts for the City of Gulfport’s Holiday Decorating Contest.

“It was just a matter of time,” Captain Clayton Tieman, of TowBoatU.S., said. “We knew we were going to get it, it just took some time.”

Although operations to recover the large red steel-hull

boat began immediately after recovery of the “Tocade,” the crew was unable to remove the vessel. The size and weight of the boat proved challenging.

According to Gulfport’s Cultural Facilities Supervisor Justin Shea, the city will likely work with the county to get a barge in to winch the red boat off of the beach.

Gulfport’s finest first responders – the Gulfport Police Department and Gulfport Fire Rescue – took great care with a very special visitor Monday, December 7. City employees escorted Santa through town on the Fire Rescue Emergency Response cart.

Justin Shea, Gulfport’s Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor, and daughter Melody Shea, 8, were front and center at the Casino for Santa’s parade through Gulfport.

At 6 p.m., they escorted Santa parade-style through Gulfport’s four wards after getting special instructions from

“For almost 100 years, Gulfport has hosted the annual tree lighting on the first Monday of December,” Mayor Sam Henderson said as he stood in Clymer Park near the cedar tree that stands in as the city’s Christmas tree each year.

Mask Up or Face the Consequences, Says Law Enforcement

At a Thursday, December 3 press conference, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri called for a countywide push for stronger mask and social distancing compliance.

On June 24, Pinellas County passed Ordinance 20-14 mandating face coverings in public places. Since then, positive COVID-19 cases have fluctuated. Recently, however, cases have surged.

According to Johns Hopkins University, Thursday, December 3, the U.S. reported 2,879 COVID-19 deaths – breaking the record set just the previous day. Since the start of the pandemic, 276,325 deaths have been linked to COVID-19 in the U.S., with no sign of slowing.

Florida is third in the country for most COVID-19 related deaths at 18,874. The state has logged more than a million positive cases since the start of the pandemic.

PCSO deputies conducted checks on businesses around the county and found 40% of bars and 8% of restaurants in violation of the ordinance, including staff not wearing masks, Sheriff Gualtieri said.

Pinellas County Administrator Barry A. Burton, County Commission Chair Pat Gerard, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard joined Gualtieri in urging businesses to do better – or potentially face consequences.

“Fines and penalties are not

suspended for businesses, so if we have to go down that path, we can. We don’t want to. We need the businesses, again, to help us help you – to help the community,” Gualtieri said during the press conference.

On Friday, December 4, Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson addressed residents in a video urging businesses and residents to follow the county COVID-19 ordinance and CDC protocols.

“Residents are urged to mask up and practice physical distancing. We’ve been calling it ‘social distancing’ but, truly, you don’t have to be socially distant, you need to be physically distant,” the mayor said. “And this is what we need to do in public, and with our friends and family in order to protect each other.”

The mayor also warned that the city “will follow up at these businesses reported to be

consistently violating the ordinance.”

In the past month, the mayor said, the percentage of people testing positive has doubled, reaching 8.4% on November 29, compared to 4.2% on October 30. Patients on ventilators “have also nearly doubled in that time,” he said.

At the Gulfport City Council meeting on November 17, Henderson announced virtually that he and his wife had tested positive for COVID-19.

Both have recovered and since tested negative.

“I want to let you know that I, and many other people – several who are watching this in the Gulfport area – have likely already gone through having COVID-19 and come out the other side,” he said. “But I want everyone to consider that there are over a quarter of a million people, in this country alone during a global pandemic, who were not so lucky. So, you never know how it’s going to treat you – no matter what age you are, no matter what physical condition you’re in. If you get through it, you’re lucky, but you don’t know until you get it.”

On December 4 Gulfport Police Officers visited restaurants and bars, reminding them of the mandate and posting signs to help enforce the rules.

One server at Pia’s Trattoria on Beach Boulevard was glad for the official signage.

“We have our own sign” reminding customers they must wear a mask indoors, she explained, but the large, blue PCSO signs would be a welcome addition.

Patrons must wear a face covering in public, indoor places.

All employees and business owners must wear a face covering at all times; even when serving outdoor areas. Employees and business owners must also work to ensure every person inside their business complies with the county ordinance.

Restaurant and bar customers must be seated in order to be served. Tables must be spaced six feet apart and groups larger than 10 must not be seated at the same table.

Florida’s fall weather makes this an ideal time to visit Fort De Soto County Park where, after passing the Pinellas Bayway’s last tollbooth, you cross over Bunce’s Pass. This popular destination carries an intriguing history – one involving a man named William Bunce, the fish camp he operated, and a federal military operation that wiped it out 180 years ago.

Captain William Bunce came to Florida shortly after the U.S. took possession of these lands from Spain.

This week, we learn about Bunce’s arrival along a militarized frontier and his fishing camps near the mouth of Tampa Bay. Next week, we’ll visit his second camp, the one he created along Bunce’s Pass, before troops from Fort Brooke annihilated it in October 1840.

Spain’s tenuous hold on La Florida faced regular threats in the early 1800s due to pressures that began long before the U.S. existed. During the early 1700s, slave-owning colonists in British North America grew impatient with runaway slaves that fled from their lands into Spanish Florida. Unlike the Underground Railroad that aided fugitive slaves before the Civil War, this first path to freedom went south.

Spain welcomed these runaways, even establishing a fortress for them – Fort Mose – a little north of St. Augustine. During the War of Jenkins’ Ear, England attacked Fort Mose in 1740 with plans to capture fleeing slaves. England took possession of La Florida in 1763 and Spain grabbed it again in 1783 after helping the patriots to the north secure their independence from Britain in the American Revolution.

While this colonial back-andforth took place, another displaced population came into Florida.

Beginning in the 1740s and continuing into the early 1800s, some members of the Creek Nation and other Indian tribes escaped to Florida as settlers pushed them from their ancestral lands. These people settled in north Florida and joined the tribe Europeans called “Seminole,� who had lived here for thousands of years.

A Pioneer in a New American Territory Born in Baltimore, Captain William Bunce found his way to Key West as a young man during the 1820s. He fished, engaged in shipping, and briefly served as a customs officer who monitored commerce along Florida’s largely uninhabited west coast – including shipments entering Tampa Bay. Bunce spent more time fishing and sailing around Tampa Bay in the early 1830s. He became a trusted guide to Colonel Brooke and other officers at Fort Brooke during fishing expeditions. Bunce knew the waters of Boca Ciega Bay, Tampa Bay and the Manatee River better than anyone else. He caught large sea turtles to feed the troops at the fort. They considered his turtle “steaks” a delicacy, and his knowledge of area waters a strategic asset.

During a time when local waters teemed with fish, Bunce set up a fishing rancho along the mouth of the Manatee River in 1834. Earlier Spanish ranchos in the 1700s and early 1800s were temporary camps, locations where rugged folk harvested tons of fish along Florida’s west coast, smoked and salted them, and sailed them to markets in USGS

Andrew Jackson led military expeditions into Spanish Florida during the War of 1812 and the First Seminole War during the 1810s. He violated international law as he chased down Indians and runaway slaves by illegally crossing into Spanish Florida. His Indian removal efforts solidified his political career, encouraged Spain to transfer its colonial holdings of La Florida to the U.S. in 1821, and helped Jackson win the presidency in 1828.

As Jackson and other Americans attacked Seminoles and fugitive slaves in Spanish Florida between 1812 and 1821, the largely unpopulated Tampa Bay area became a safe, isolated refuge.

These hunted populations quietly lived and fished along the Pinellas Peninsula, Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay. They tried not to attract any attention, but faced capture and relocation after the U.S. acquired Florida.

Federal officials permitted slavery in territorial Florida and encouraged the seizure of runaway slaves. They also wanted to remove the Seminoles to lands west of the Mississippi. They established forts throughout Florida – not to protect from foreign invasion, but to subdue, control and remove Indians and runaways.

Colonel George Mercer Brooke sailed from Pensacola and established a remote fort at the site of the present-day Tampa Convention Center in 1824. A tiny village of merchants took shape north of Fort Brooke. This remote outpost along the Hillsborough River became Tampa, a settlement with fewer than 100 people in the 1820s and 1830s.

Bunce hoped to establish a permanent operation. During the fall, winter and early spring months, he needed laborers to catch, prepare and preserve mullet and other fish for merchants in Havana and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Seminoles and runaway slaves soon worked for him, as did Spaniards, Cubans and people of mixed racial ancestry.

By the mid-1830s, nearly 150 people lived at Bunce’s rancho. Workers harvested a variety of sea life, smoked and boiled their catches, collected fish roe, and sent these products to markets that suffered from overfishing. Women and children at Bunce’s fish camp wove cord rope nets from the fibers of palm fronds.

This multicultural rancho along the Manatee River had more residents than Tampa. Aside from federal military funds streaming into Fort Brooke, Bunce’s fishing enterprise became the largest economic entity in the sparselysettled Tampa Bay region.

The Seminole War and a First Attack on Bunce Tensions between authorities and Seminole Indians escalated while Bunce’s Manatee camp thrived.

remove Native Americans. Congress supported the president’s policy by passing the Indian Removal Act in 1830. Jackson handily won re-election in 1832. Some historians have characterized a notable Indian war during Jackson’s second term as the largest slave uprising in American history.

In December 1835, Major Francis Langhorne Dade led more than 100 soldiers from Fort Brooke to Fort King, near Ocala. Seminoles and some allies ambushed them near Bushnell, killing Dade and nearly all of his troops. This skirmish marked the beginning of the second phase of the Seminole War, a series of hostilities between 1835 and 1842 that pitted Seminoles and runaway slaves against settlers, soldiers and militiamen.

Bunce’s successful operations in Manatee became an obvious target.

Officers from Fort Brooke demanded that Bunce surrender the Seminoles and other supposed “enemy combatants” working at his rancho.

Bunce argued that the laborers posed no threat. The workers minded their business, harvested fish and did not take up arms.

Commanders at Fort Brooke responded with force. They dispatched gunboats to the Manatee River, launched an attack on Bunce’s rancho, destroyed it, and scattered the occupants. Simply stated, soldiers obliterated the largest fishing enterprise along Florida’s west coast because of the racial makeup of the peaceful, hardworking people who had made it successful.

Stubborn and resolute, Bunce established a new camp along the pass that bears his name. Despite the attack by soldiers at Fort Brooke, Bunce remained a notable leader among Tampa’s tiny merchant community. He continued to lead fishing parties that included troops from Fort Brooke. His new fish camp took shape with the same kind of workers that he used in Manatee County. It would not last.

Next week, we visit Bunce’s Pass to learn about the biggest business along the Pinellas Peninsula before troops decided to eradicate it in 1840.

“The Use of Deadly Force Task Force was formed to show that we are being very transparent and accountable to the citizens of St. Petersburg,” said Halloway. “The Sheriff, the Task Force and the State Attorney’s office will investigate the criminal matter involved in the shooting with Mr. Harris.”

According to Halloway, the SPPD will also examine their policies and procedures “to see if there were any violations that were done during the shooting” after they receive more information from the PCSO.

St. Petersburg Police Officers shot and killed Dominique Harris, 20, as Harris evaded arrest and shot at police officers on Wednesday, December 2 at 4:15 p.m.

According to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualiteri, SPPD Special Investigation Unit officers were conducting an investigation at Food Max convenience store on 18th Avenue South near 14th Street when they received a tip that Harris was in the area.

Harris had a warrant out for his arrest for felony child abuse for allegedly body slamming a 15-yearold boy during a basketball court altercation in late October; police positively identified him leaving the food mart’s parking lot.

According to police, as Harris tried to drive away to evade arrest, police broke the driver’s side front window and blocked him in with their vehicles.

Harris then used his car to ram into police vehicles, a cement bollard in front of the food mart and another car nearby. After that, PCSO reports that Harris began shooting at police officers.

The initial investigation suggests at least five or six officers fired their weapons during the shootout, hitting Harris multiple times and killing him, according to Gualtieri.

One officer was hit in the lower torso. Another suffered a minor injury to the leg and a possible concussion during the commotion.

The officer who was shot suffered a non-life-threatening wound and was in stable condition after emergency surgery at Bayfront Hospital, Gualtieri said.

Gualiteri confirmed on Thursday, December 3 that five Special Investigations Unit detectives and one officer were involved in the incident. Four of the six individuals had been involved in previous firearm discharges, which were ruled justified.

Because it involved lethal force by police, the County Use of Force Investigative Task Force will investigate the incident.

Mize Gallery is known for its creatively themed monthly exhibits.

Since opening the gallery in 2018, owner Chad Mize mixes serious themes, such as “Vote,“ prior to the 2020 election, with lighter, pop culture focus, such as “Sounds Good,” a reimagining of iconic album covers.

“I love pop culture and the notion that it is something people can relate to,” says Mize. “We go back and forth between serious themes like ‘Conspiracy’ and fun, lighthearted tongue-in-cheek shows like ‘SMILE.’ My favorite part of coming up with these ideas are when artists drop off their work for a show and I see what they’ve done.”

A graphic designer and web developer, Mize began painting murals on the 600 block of Central Avenue in 2011 and went on to create pieces for Facebook, the Tampa Bay Rays and

Busch Gardens, as well as residential art. He opened Mize Gallery at 689 Dr. MLK Jr. St. N., after closing Blue Lucy, the space he had previously owned, in 2014.

The new gallery prompted a new direction, and he started focusing on the thematic shows that local artists could participate in with the goal of 12 exhibits a year.

“I realized that it is my art form and I really enjoy it. I love the communal aspect of having artists learn from each other and connect. We have artists participating in our exhibits that range from 21 year-olds to 71 years of age.”

Mize has developed relationships with local artists and has a large database of those who might want to participate in an upcoming show.

This year alone, 287 artists created new works for his shows, which

have been virtual since March due to COVID-19. The gallery began opening on weekends, limiting guests to six at a time, in June.

So, how to end 2020 during a year with so many challenges?

When Mize was considering ideas, he knew he wanted to create a positive show to end a crazy year.

“I try to use my art as a positive way to uplift. And I thought a positive theme would help other artists too.

So I decided no negative art would be accepted,” he said. “I wanted only a positive vibe. We’ve had enough negative stuff going on this year.”

Mize titled the show Something 2020, and put out a call to artists with the requirement that each submit a piece that focuses on a positive aspect of 2020. More than 120 artists applied, and the list had to be narrowed to about half.

“It’s been a tough year. But one thought pulled me through – Kamala Harris as vice-president,” Waters says. “From her intelligence, experience and demeanor, all the way down to her Chuck Taylors, she embodies what this country yearns for. As the first mixed-race woman to reach this position, I wanted to capture her in all her colorful glory, and to reflect the joy I feel knowing she will soon be Madam Freaking Vice President.”

In a difficult year, Mize has had personal things to celebrate – a new home with his partner, the impetus for his own piece for Something 2020. They also opened a restaurant just as the pandemic began. Uptown Eats, at 689-D Dr. MLK Jr. St. N., is right next door to the gallery, and will be the site of the first Uptown Market featuring outdoor art vending beginning on December 5 at 9 a.m.

Despite a busy schedule, Mize is already making plans for 2021 that include curated shows, four shows by individual artists throughout the year – and, of course, the themed exhibits. The first show is Jabari Reed’s Ego Death: New Works by iBOMS on January 8.

Mize says focusing on the shows has been healthy for him during this year.

“As artists, many of us spend time alone. For me, it’s not a big deal. Most artists have to be alone to create

Put a Little Local Art on Your Tree

What happens when two small businesses and six area artists team up for the holidays? Trees that sparkle with local art.

The Local Artists of St. Petersburg 2020 Ornament Series is the brainchild of interior designer Nylma Laureano and graphic artist Bill Snyder, co-creators of Nylms World, who had the idea to turn local art into holiday ornaments.

“We were looking for ways to collaborate with artists.

It’s been a tough year for all of us. We were especially interested in bringing the work of muralists into people’s homes,” Laureano says. “The project became a labor of love handmade at our dining room table.”

They contacted artists who might be interested in submitting art for the project, although Laureano acknowledges it was hard to choose from so much great local work. Artists featured in the 2020 collection include Bryce Hudson, Cecilia Lueza, Derek Donnelly, Jabari Reed, Jennifer Kosharek and Zulu Painter. Each artist chose two of their pieces that were turned into 12 ornaments.

Then Laureano enlisted the creators of the PixelStix app, an innovative technology that recently partnered with the SHINE Mural Festival to create an interactive experience by storing video that provides information about each mural.

They brought that same technology to the ornament series.

Each ornament purchased includes a card with a personal video message from the artist, accessible through the app.

Businesses and artists share the proceeds.

Next year, six new artists will be chosen for the 2021 series. Laureano says there are enough good artists in the area to pick six for years to come.
