Jonesing for Art On the first weekend of December, 28 artists at 11 separate stops opened their doors for Gulfport’s ArtJones 2023 studio tour, the seventh annual ArtJones. As picturesque sidewalks filled with directional signs and little clusters of visitors squinting down at their maps, three Gulfport artists — each recently designated as a Gulfport Emerging Artist by the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce — were out meeting the crowds. Together they formed a fascinating collage of how the arts in this creative little hamlet are growing.
ASHLEY RIVERS
By Amanda Hagood
Lights, Camera, Gulfport Riley Pitzen grew up around Gulfport’s arts scene. Literally. “Our backyard was a mess,” quips the 21-year-old son of Gulfport sculptor Tom Pitzen. In fact, he can still remember seeing the 20-foot Gulfport welcome sign his father created loaded onto a trailer and driven away to its current home on the corner of Beach and Gulfport Boulevards. ArtJones continued on page 18
Cracked surfaces, deep, burnished tones, and lifelike contours are all features of sculptor Ashley Rivers’ Under Pressure series. Her art explores the forces that shape us, and the shapes we take.

Trump I am new to Gulfport, from Tampa. I read your magazine [sic] when visiting my sister and wonder if there are any Republicans that live in this community as all I see in your paper is nasty comments about Donald Trump. Joe Biden has put everyone in the poorhouse and we are on the doorstep of WWIII. Is Gulfport a Democrat-only city? At least Trump never put us in the state we are in now and we need him to put this country back on its feet. —Pat Urquhart, Tampa/Gulfport
St. Bartholomew’s Nice story about Saint Bartholomew’s, except it’s inaccurate. During the de jure segregation era, Black [people] were not allowed to live south of 15th Avenue South. The area around the church began filling with people of color, which was intolerable to the congregation. They raised an enormous amount of money to move it, where it is now to get away from the Black [people]. Plain and simple. That is the truth. —Poul Hornsleth, Gulfport
Rev. Ethan J. Cole’s Response While Mr. Warner did not include my comments about this issue in the article, I was direct with him about our awareness as a congregation about the legacy of racism in
the history of St. Bart’s, particularly with respect to the decision to relocate the congregation in the early 1970s. Mr. Hornsleth interpretation of the events around the move is reasonable, though I cannot speak to the inner motivations of the clergy and parishioners of that time. Our past is part of who we are. Part of the work of the Gospel in the present is to heal, move forward, and be faithful to the message of Jesus, which clearly includes racial reconciliation. The Diocese of Southwest Florida, of which St. Bart’s is a member, established the Committee for Race and Reconciliation to accomplish just that mission. The Committee is focused on racial healing through education, dialogue, and advocacy

with the purpose of dismantling racism and lifting up racial justice and reconciliation in Christ in the Diocese. St. Bart’s vestry has had significant conversations about our history, including the ongoing reputation that is sometimes attached to the congregation from that move in particular. Today, we are committed to being a place of grace, love, and inclusion for all people, in accordance with the Gospel. The openness and welcoming posture that the church takes today is an intentional choice. The process of healing, justice, and truth-telling is a journey both for individuals and for communities, and all are invited —The Rev. Ethan J. Cole, Rector of St. Bartholomew’s

Trees, IT, and GEMS: December 5 City Council Updates By Patrick Heinzen
Trees, Trees, and More Trees The ordinance is one in a series of ideas to increase tree coverage in the city. Now that it is approved, residents who would like to remove a tree have different guidelines. Firstly, the cost paid to Gulfport’s tree fund has increased from $100 per inch to $125 per inch. This is measured by diameter of the trunk at breast height. The ordinance states the breast height is “the diameter, in inches, of a tree measured at four and one-half (4.5) feet above the existing grade.” Along with this, the fee for an un-permitted removal is now $100, instead of $50. Finally, the City is providing residents with a list of native trees that are available for replacement. IT Upgrades Whether it be the microphones that Gulfport City Council uses to speak, or the computers in the library, Gulfport heavily relies on technology. This brings the need for good IT service. Council renewed their contract with SHI International for 2024 through Resolution 2023-109. SHI is the state contracted IT provider, which allows the City to get discounted prices on IT supplies. These range from iPads to sound systems, and much in between. Through the state contract, Gulfport is able to buy goods and ser-

Good news for Gulfport residents! Gulfport City Council voted for an ordinance and two resolutions to improve quality of living for the all residents, and especially seniors and disabled residents. At the Dec. 5 meeting, Council approved Ordinance 2023-12, Resolution 2023109, and Resolution 2023-110. All of these focus on benefitting the community.
GEMS will be expanding their fleet of Mini-Buses to accommodate more passengers.
vices for at least 30% off, but often times more than 30%. The City is also able to get these services for a longer period of time. City Council had to vote on this renewal, as the total cost will exceed the expected $20,000 budget. The resolution states that the total cost to the City will not exceed $100,000. Council member April Thanos (Ward I) expressed excitement for this. “I’m hoping we can get a big screen right here,” said Thanos, gesturing to the wall behind the councilmembers. GEMS Program Gulfport loves its seniors. With a new senior center on the way, and City Council often discussing dif-
ferent forms of accessibility, it is clear to see the commitment to Gulfport’s aging community (even though people only need to be 50 years old to join the “senior” center). One of the ways the City pays attention to seniors and disabled residents is through the Gulfport Extended Mobility Service (GEMS) program. The GEMS program is a transportation service providing seniors and disabled residents reliable transport when public transportation doesn’t fit their needs. They provide a door-to-door service for people who need to get to doctors appointments, recreational activities, groceries, and whatever else someone might need. Recently, GEMS saw an increase

in the number of disabled residents, and people who need wheelchairs. Because of this, they’ve requested an upgrade to their fleet. Currently, they have a 2011 Ford Taurus, a 2012 Champion Mini-Bus, a 2018 Ford Transit, and a 2021 Chevy Mini-Bus.
GEMS vehicles see a high volume of usage. From July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, the fleet made 9,178 oneway trips, spanning mor than 29,585 miles. They are looking to buy a new vehicle to replace the 2011 Ford Taurus, as it is older and no longer has the capacity the Center needs. The City doesn’t bear most of the cost. The federal government pays for 80%, the state pays for 10%, and the City pays for 10%. This totals about $10,000 for the City. After a short discussion about hybrid and electric options, the resolution was approved. GEMS will soon transport those in need in a new mini-bus.

A Drop Of Color
City Whys: New Colorful Gulfport House This week, a reader wants to know about the colorful house on the corner of 54th Street South and 28th Avenue South. Question: A very large, colorful structure has recently been completed where a small, older house once sat in downtown Gulfport. Just curious, is this a single-family home, new apartments or vacation rental units? —June Johns Answer: The Gabber Newspaper spoke with Mark Griffin, planner for the City of Gulfport. “It’s a newly remodeled single family home,” he said. The Gabber Newspaper could find no short-term rental listings for this property, and a knock on the door revealed the home has a family living there. The house with its mix of blues and yellows matching the University of Michigan flag stands out as you drive down the road. You can’t miss the

Transportation Confrontation
The Battle for the PSTA Board of Directors Seat To many residents, the work that the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority does is irreplaceable. PSTA has a fleet of buses that provide reliable and widespread transport throughout the county. To maintain this level of service, they have a board of directors to make sure the needs of residents get heard. City Councils across the county elect these representatives when a seat opens. This year, the board has a vacancy for someone to represent the cities of Seminole, South Pasadena, Gulfport, Kenneth City, Belleair, and Belleair Bluffs. At their Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 meetings, Gulfport City Council heard presentations from the two candidates, then made their decision. Joseph Barkley III On Nov. 21, Belleair Bluffs Commissioner Joseph Barkley III paid Council a visit. Here, he introduced himself to the Council and the residents in attendance. Barkley served on the PSTA Board of Directors from 2012 to 2020, and hopes to serve again soon. “I am running again for another term because I feel that the average person in Pinellas County needs someone who is a reliable and affordable advocate for public transporta-

tion,” said Barkley. “In my eight years on the board, I served on every committee at least once.” Barkley says he was instrumental in the shift from diesel powered buses to hybrid and electric buses. This also included a plan that installed underground quick-chargers around the County that quickly and efficiently charge the buses as they drive over the area. This allowed the buses to complete their long routes every day. In 2019, when the Gulfport trolley became hard to maintain, Barkley assisted the City in getting a new one. “I’m asking for your City’s vote to allow me to continue helping improve the transportation options for Pinellas County citizens,” said Barkley.

Thomas Reid At the Dec. 5 meeting, Council received a presentation from the second candidate for the Board of Directors. Thomas Reid, Vice Mayor for the City of South Pasadena, came to ask Council for their vote. Reid spoke about a new bill that would restructure the PSTA Board of Directors, which would keep Gulfport and South Pasadena under the same seat, while Belleair Bluffs would be under a different one. “This is probably going to be the shortest appointment in board history, because whoever gets the seat is only going to be on the board for six months, and then it will go to the most populous city, which would be Largo,” said Reid. “It is important for the cities that will remain connected to have a voice that will actually work on their behalf during that transition.” Reid spoke about his passion for the connection between South Pasadena and Gulfport. “Your citizens shop in our city and we come to your town,” said Reid. “I think we have a really good cohesive relationship and I strive to build on that.” Later in the meeting, during the time set for the City Manager’s report, Council made their final decision. Following a short discussion, the Council voted Joseph Barkley III, in a 3-2 vote, with Vice Mayor Paul Ray (Ward III) and Councilmember April Thanos (Ward I) voting for Thomas Reid.

Do I Have Your Attention Yet? Because your time has come, your city needs you. In an effort to share prosperity, fight inflation, increase you (or your landlord’s) property values, and make the literal future possible for your kids and grandkids, we are giving away trees to the citizenry of Gulfport. Every single month until December of 2024. We’re picking out species from our newly approved Tree Ordinance, and offering one featured species per month. I’ll have some alternative tree species on hand at each giveaway, in case a Tree-of-the-Month is not suited for your property. We’ll have shade trees, smaller understory trees, native and non-native, showy flowering as well as stealthy camouflage styles. Choices will also run between evergreen, deciduous (leaf droppers), trees that birds might want to nest in, and trees that can be

decorated every holiday of the year. Our featured tree this month is the South Florida slash pine (Pinus elliotti ‘densa’). This is the tree that forested a majority of our city before European humans moved in. Wide crowned, with long needles that resemble the ones found on a loblolly pine, there are two award-worthy specimens on the east side of Clymer Park at the corner of 25th Avenue South and Beach Boulevard. (If you missed the Dec. 1 Arbor Day handout, text me at 727-338-8103 and you can come pick one up for yourself. Bring your Florida driver’s license of ID card, or your water bill.) “But,” you say, “I don’t like all those needles, and I hate cleaning up the
leaves every February.” OK, fine. Remember, however, this isn’t about you. It’s about the future. Give the adults of the future a chance to decide whether or not they want to rake, vacuum, or blow. Besides, next month you have a choice of choosing a different kind of tree. Our next giveaway is scheduled for Jan. 20 in the parking lot behind the Gulfport Neighborhood Center (1617 49th St. S.). The proposed tree? The winged elm (Ulmus alata) aka the “Wahoo” tree I planted one in Clymer Park about three years ago. I named her Pegasus — Peggy for short. Come and get your own Personal Peggy! Then reread Joyce Kilmer’s poem.

After Gulfport Furniture moved out of its 22nd Avenue location, the building stayed vacant for most of this year. Now, Artists of Elements opens its art gallery in that same building with a ribbon cutting Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. The grand opening occurs Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. with drinks, appetizers, and live music from Katie Talbert. Artisan Ellen Newbauer and CPA Kathy Cregan founded Artists of Elements in July 2020. “The collaborative space will provide opportunities for conversation, engaging the community through classes, a music on the lawn series, community networking events, a gallery space for a featured monthly artist, and much more,” Artists of Elements’ website states. Gallery Manager Jana Steinhour and Newbauer signed more than 40 artists with various specialties in different backgrounds. The gallery showcases books, cards, glasswork, jewelry, mixed media, paintings, photography, pottery, and woodworks. “I hope to engage and dialogue with people. The elements of art are basic, and we all learn them in school as children: Line, shape, form, color,” Newbauer said. “As an artist and artisans, we mix the principals of form, design, space and ultimately create a moving point to communicate thoughts using a common language.” Artists of Elements, 4746 22nd Ave. S., St. Petersburg. Gulfport’s Holiday Boat Parade By Cameron Healy
ABBY RICHARDSON
Boca Ciega Yacht Club members brought holiday cheer with their annual Holiday Boat Parade.
All along the rails of Williams Pier and the Gulfport Casino dock, people cheered as brightly decorated boats sailed through Boca Ciega Bay. Boca Ciega Yacht Club members and invited friends brought holiday spirit to Gulfport with the annual BCYC Holiday Boat Parade Dec. 9. String lights and inflatable holiday figures covered a variety of boats. Although the parade started 30 minutes late, dedicated fans stayed to watch these dazzling boats cruise by. The parade passed Osgood Point, Gulfport Municipal Marina, Williams Pier, and the Gulfport Casino Ballroom. Boats made their way to Town Shores, Skimmer’s Point, Kipps Colony, and the Pasadena Yacht and Country Club marina area. They finished by Pasadena Golf Club Estates and Isla del Sol. Each boater donated two or more
unwrapped presents for children or made a check out to Gulfport’s Operation Santa toy drive to enter the parade. Not only did the boats amaze everyone with their light displays, but the boaters actively helped the Gulfport community. The Gabber Newspaper used AI
to remove some of the pilings along the dock to enhance visibility. The Gabber Newspaper will always tell our readers if we use AI. We deemed it appropriate in this instance because this was feature photography, not photojournalism. We have not enhanced the boats or their decor in any way.

arts The Scottish Scrooge
‘Scrooge MacBeth’ in St. Pete: Shakespeare Meets Slapstick Shakespeare fans, consider yourselves warned: You’ve never seen The Bard quite like this. Scrooge MacBeth in St. Pete may not be quite the same as attending the first performance of Julius Caesar at The Globe Theatre, but if more high school English teachers taught Shakespeare the way director Ward Smith (and playwright David MacGregor) present it in this 90-minute comedy, more people would understand that Shakespeare isn’t as much “high art” as “Hallmark Channel.” That’s not a bad thing. Shakespeare is funny, dramatic, and compelling, and all-too-often performed in dry, stodgy performances that leave audiences feeling scholarly, if not entertained. No one’s accusing Scrooge MacBeth of that same fate. And don’t misunderstand: Scrooge MacBeth is not a Shakespeare original, although if he were alive today, Shakespeare would have laughed himself silly at this blazingly witty script. But Soft, What Plot Through Yonder Window Breaks? The premise is simple: a struggling community theater panics when six of its 10 cast members get food poisoning. In the ultimate “the show must go on” moment, the remaining foursome — two couples — decide to improvise a cabaret-style Christmas show for the 15 people in the audience (10 of whom have comped tickets). Of course, Victor — convincingly played as every director’s worst nightmare, an over-the-top diva, by Troy Brooks — refuses to the do the show. When the Stage Manager suggests allowing him to play Othello, however, he can’t resist, and the cast proceeds with a holiday Shakespeare caberet. That’s every bit as odd and lyrical as it sounds. Smith’s talent as a director shines

as the cast of five moves on a stunningly small stage. While each actor embraces their role with zest (looking at you, Victor), Lucy Bishop — although she doesn’t appear often onstage — as contumaciously stoic Stage Manager, brings a gritty comedy to what could be an almost-too-cheerful show about a floundering theater company. David Warner, who often reviews theater for this publication, plays Bob, a plumber who probably should stick to plumbing (this is not a reflection on Warner’s performance, but on Bob’s — it’s tough for a good actor to pretend to be a mediocre actor). Bob’s expository opening sets the tone for the show, and Melissa Misener, who appears as his wife and fellow cast member, Sylvia, helps ramp it up until Tracey Reynolds’ Renee and and Victor join them onstage. Get Thee to a SparkNotes The only problem with this delightful show is that non-Shake-
speare fans will not get all the jokes. But... you don’t need to be a Shakespeare scholar to appreciate Victor’s enthusiastic “I’m Getting Nuttin’ For Christmas” — sung from the point of view of Richard of Gloucester (Richard III). Whether the closest you come to Hamlet is The Lion King or a deepdive into whether secular metaphysical influences or state-mandated religion motivated the murders in it, you’ll find no shortage of holiday mirth in Scrooge MacBeth. And who knows — the Scrooge MacBeth version of “Santa Baby” might compel you to read Antony and Cleopatra. Be prepared, though: Shakespeare’s version has far less merrier undertones. See Scrooge MacBeth in St. Pete The Off-Central, 2260 1st Ave. N., St. Petersburg. Through Dec. 17: Thurs., 7:30 p.m.; Fri.-Sat., 8 p.m.; and Sun., 3 p.m. $16 & $36. theoffcentral.com; 727-202-7019.

The Steampunk Scrooge
St. Petersburg City Theatre’s ‘A Christmas Carol: A Change in Gear’ Imagine a cross between Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine. Imagine no longer and see St. Petersburg City Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol: A Change in Gear. The show’s steampunk adaptation is the brainchild of the show’s director Kailyn Rosenthal. Additionally, the science fiction sub-genre rooted in the Victorian era of steam-powered machinery is well suited for Dickens’ tale of ghosts and fantasy. The spirits in this show are like nothing you’ve ever seen. This is where Rosenthal has the most fun with character and costuming. To fit the steampunk style, the spirits are cleverly conceived futuristic creations (as might have been thought of in Victorian days and in the writings of Wells or Jules Verne).

‘A Christmas Carol: A Change in Gear’ There are sounds of gadgets and gizmos ticking and whooshing. Lights flash as a huge backdrop of gears and Roman numerals on an antique clock set the mood. In the Dickens classic, published in 1843, three spirits visit the miserly Scrooge, played here by Frederick Lien. They show him the sufferings of the poor, especially his employee Bob Cratchit and his large family, scraping by on Bob’s meager pay. The spirits convince Scrooge to change his ways. He awakens on Christmas Day with a kind heart and giving attitude. The steampunk adaptation works quite well while keeping Dickens’ lovely language intact. Although there are times when the story gets lost in the complex staging. The Seven Radio Players The First Spirit, played by Phineas Slaton, has the steampunk look of a music box ballerina (if you can imagine that!). It moves mechanically to the well-timed sounds. The costume

is incredible, and Slaton pulls off the detached character beautifully, an absolute delight to watch. Allen Coyle opens the second act on his tricked-out bicycle as the Second Spirit. Somehow it is reminiscent of Christopher Lloyd in his DeLorean in Back to the Future. Coyle’s character features a huge wind-up key on his back, showing his time is short. Coyle also has a wonderful turn as Fezziwig. I especially enjoyed the staging of Scrooge and the Second Spirit visiting the poor. Huddled in deep shadows, the indigent sing carols with a dark, mysterious and ominous quality. It is effective and moving. Another favorite scene is when Old Joe (Jim Gunning) and chambermaids (Velda Gauthier and Kathryn Pollard) rifle through the effects of the dead Scrooge, mocking him in the process. While the performances were a bit uneven on opening night, Alan

S. Rosenthal as Jacob Marley was wonderful. He commanded the stage as he narrated Dickens’ story. I also enjoyed Taylor Landau as Belle in her scene with young Scrooge, played by Joseph Conte, who also did a nice job as the soundless Third Spirit. I would have liked to have seen more emotional intensity. Specifically, when Scrooge scoffed at the solicitors, “Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?” as well as with other memorable lines. Nonetheless, St. Petersburg City Theatre created a fitting and festive alternate universe for Dickens’ timeless story. See ‘A Christmas Change in Gear’

Pitzen spent ArtJones 2023 surrounded by his own art work. His photographs and drawings lined the carport of Ray Domingo’s studio, with whom he shared a tour stop. On one side, his portraits, drawn from iconic photographs of famous figures such as Malala Yousafzai, were dazzlingly lifelike. Pitzen began drawing about five years ago, he explained. He carefully picked images that would help him practice skills — like the seasoned skin of Nelson Mandela’s face, or the gloss on Jack Nicholson’s hair and beard. The opposite wall held Pitzen’s photographs, a mixture of city scenes and quirky, almost-lostin-landscape details. My favorite showed a couple convening with a stray Canada Goose against the giant backdrop of an industrial harbor. Still photography helps Pitzen keep his eye sharp for his real passion, which is cinematography. Pitzen has already created a handful of short films and music videos. He most recently worked on a feature-length production — a stoner comedy staring a messianic beach bum called Jebus (much of which was shot in Gulfport). About time someone figured out we were telegenic. Jungian Art-chetypes Just a few blocks away, in front of the Brenda McMahon Gallery, silversmith Ashley Wix stood at a table filled with delicately coiled pendants, rings, and necklaces bearing bold, intricately patterned stones.

Metalsmith Ashley Wix takes her inspiration from world mythology. This “Baba Yaga” pendant comes from a series devoted to the exploration of the wise woman archetype.
A central display called attention to her “Crones of the Underworld” series of necklaces inspired by wise women of world mythology. Wix’s journey to jewelerdom began with a 15-year career as a dental technician. “I made teeth!” she exclaims. “Crowns, bridges, and veneers.” The same skills she used in crafting dental pieces, she says, helped

her break into the fine art of making jewelry about seven years ago. Wix’s star is certainly on the rise in Gulfport. In addition to receiving a Larry Enlow Emerging Artist Scholarship, she has also received support from the Gulfport Merchant Chamber’s Rise and Shine program. She was the featured artist at Brenda McMahon Gallery in September 2023 and has participated in the Fine Arts Festival. “Everyone has been gracious and welcoming,” she effused. “I felt encouraged, lifted up, and supported.” The high number of woman-owned businesses in Gulfport have also helped her feel at home. “It’s refreshing,” she notes. But there are still challenges. For one, she works from home, leaving her only one room in which to create. This makes it impossible, currently, to begin casting figures for use in her jewelry – she has the equipment, but not the space. She’s also looking for ways to break into

cess. Rivers has been practicing and honing her craft for 12 years now as she has exhibited, curated, and won recognition – including a 2022 Creative Pinellas Emerging Artist Award — in galleries across the Tampa Bay region. Her favorite relaxation activity is also productive: abstract painting. “It’s what I do when I need a break
from all this,” she says, smiling down at the clay work album on her table. Rivers has lived in Gulfport for about four years. While she appreciates the rich artistic community here, she feels her work brings a different sensibility. “My work is not for everyone, and that’s OK,” she said. Some people will always see the beauty.
Across the sidewalk, sculptor Ashley Rivers stood with a stoneware sculpture from her new Under Pressure series. At first, “Unyielding” reads like a portion of a larger piece: a cracked clay chest sprouting broken arms and a neck, a fringe of steel armature visible along the throat. But this fragmentary look — what Rivers calls a “being built” aesthetic — is quite deliberate. It captures those moments on the edge of becoming, breaking free into a new phase. “Do you know what happens to coal when it is under pressure?” she quizzed me. “It becomes diamonds. Pressure is what turns us into diamonds.” Indeed, the pieces in this series, created from live models, of are burnished with acrylic and graphite to give them a deep, lava-like glow. Subtle variations in color emphasizes the contours of the legs, bellies, throats, and other parts of the body that they capture. Rivers has also casted on commission. She can recall one client who asked for models to be made of her body both before and after her mastectomy. It is nothing if not an intense pro-

St. Petersburg Distillery’s Honey Spirit By Morgan Banno
Mixology is a huge, trending market with loads of potential. In the Warehouse Arts District of St. Petersburg, small-batch spirits reign supreme, especially at St. Petersburg Distillery. The distillery is currently undergoing a major facelift with a reinvigorated dedication to community and sustainability.
There’s a lot of buzz around St. Petersburg Distillery these days — literally. Director of Brands and Marketing Matt Risely gave The Gabber Newspaper a private tour of the 30acre property — and topped it off with a spirit tasting. In the last three weeks, the distillery has established its own on-site bee colony — a first of its kind in the world of sustainable Florida spirits. The distillery works in conjunction with Pinellas Beekeeper’s Association to establish and maintain the colony, with the eventual goal of Master Distiller Warren Gardner serving as the certified on-site beekeeper for spirit production. “We want to be self sustainable,” Risely said. “We don’t want to have to go outside for any honey whatsoever. The distillery currently has two bee boxes and plans to add two more by next spring. The new colony of humming hustlers was an idea born of mad genius while cultivating their honey mead into their new Honey Spirit — a limited-release spirit distilled with honey and hops, and barrel-aged for four years. This masterfully blended spirit highlights rich, honey notes with smoky undertones, making for a delightful balance in each sip. While the honey for this year’s spirit release did not come from the bee colony, the goal is for future batches to use the honey produced in-house. “We’re really big believers in grainto-glass mentality,” Risley said. “And

this venture of getting into starting our own bee colony is important to us because there are so many different parts of our product that utilize the honey itself.” Grab a bottle soon because their limited release spirits always sell out. Big Future Plans Big things are in the works at the distillery (and their massive property), including an an expanded bee
colony, a full-service and sustainable garden, a restaurant with a rooftop bar, art installations, venue/ event space, lost (heritage) crafts experiences, expanded distiller’s lab, and revamped tasting rooms. If St. Petersburg Distillery isn’t already on your personal RADAR, it needs to be now. “We’re very much trying to become a community-based business here as well as producing high-quality spirits,” Risley said. As we walked past a wall of wine

barrels aging the upcoming bourbon and gin, Risley explained the plans to build a rickhouse. The eight-story structure would house 25-30,000 barrels for their spirits to age but it would also include a “social club” at the bottom, with a speakeasy. In addition to their top-notch equipment (new grain silos, new boiler, and distilling tanks from Boston), they are expanding their distilling lab. Guests can expect tours with up-close views of the work in action. The tasting room will also grow to provide intimate tastings and guided taste experiences. What I’m most excited about it is the addition of their urban garden and rooftop restaurant. “We want to build out a small little farm that we’d be able to grow our own grains, vegetation, whatever, and be able to offer it up to the community but also use it for ourselves as well,” Risley said. St. Pete Distillery is committed to sustainability and sourcing in Tampa Bay. If they can grow it themselves, they will. “We’re constantly trying to move forward so where as much as possible can start here and finish here,” said Risley.
