Risemberg, a retired airplane mechanic, is Gulfport’s designated earthy-granola homestead farmer, and founder of Moon Landing Yoga.

A figurehead for community meditation and sustainable farming in Gulfport, Risemberg cringes at the thought of even one of his farmed earthworms falling to its demise.

By the time you read this, most of our staff will be in the middle of a week of long-awaited relaxation. We’re all relaxing in our own ways. For part of the week, I’ll be camping on a beach. One of the best things Barry and I did this year was sell my car and buy a travel trailer, because owning a newspaper isn’t exactly a fast-track to sleeping at the Ritz Carlton – and, really, we’re camping people, anyway, so the travel trailer allows us to travel the way we love. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s one of the most affordable ways to travel.

It’s been, in a phrase, a year. I’ve had a few people ask if we regretted buying the paper, and I don’t know what to say, because the answer is complicated: I love journalism, and I love Gulfport. I hate that we write things that upset people. I hate that it’s still a financial struggle some weeks, but I love that we’re able to afford to print the paper every week, and that y’all will read it. I hate that we haven’t found the right editor yet, but I love that we have so many applicants.

It’s exhausting and exhilarating and wonderful and I love it. I have no regrets.

I love, too, that our staff approached us with a new idea this year: Why not celebrate one person in Gulfport who epitomizes a part of Gulfport that makes it a little more Gulfport? My first thought: What a wonderful idea. My second thought: How do we choose just one Gulfportian?

On behalf of everyone at The Gabber, I’m pleased to introduce our final issue of 2021, where we celebrate the past year and one of the people who made it a better one. Please meet our 2021 Gulfportian of the Year, Albert Risemberg.

Is Gulfport Hurricane Ready?

Evacuation shelters, by design, offer only a roof and floor space during a hurricane. Within 72 hours. they are supposed to transform into emergency shelters, providing water, food and cots. The Red Cross decides where supplies are needed and sends them by truck.

The Tampa Bay Planning Council study, The Phoenix Project, predicts that during a Category 3 [or greater] storm, southern Pinellas will be an island. After the storm passes, all evacuation and supply

routes will be blocked or destroyed and no Red Cross trucks will get through. How long will this last?

There is no public information on how the county or Red Cross plan to deal with this. The residents of Gulfport need the City of Gulfport to be proactive in addressing this life or death situation. (P.S.: Look at the Pinellas County flood zone map and notice the red line running from the St. Pete airport to Bay Pines hospital. This will be the path of northern Tampa Bay storm

surge runoff after a hurricane. I am looking for any information on plans to deal with this. –David O’Brien, Gulfport

“Moon Landing Yoga is the joy of my life,” Albert Risemberg said.

Coming Home Long before the now-bearded Risemberg knew that Gulfport, Florida existed, he was traveling the world by bike – once from Portland to San Francisco – and plane.

Today, the 62-year-old Gulfport resident’s main form of transportation is bicycle, but pre-retirement, Risemberg repaired airplanes for United Airlines for 21 of his 30-year career.

“I didn’t get laid off, but I came close,” Risemberg said. “I ended up taking an early retirement at 47 years old and embarked on some adventures.”

That included living in an Oregon forest full time, sailing to Bermuda and climbing the highest peak in the western hemisphere, Mt. Aconcagua, to name a few.

In 2013, globe trotting Risemberg moved to Florida in a truck with his sailboat trailing behind. His first choice was Miami, but he landed in St. Petersburg, and, eventually, Gulfport.

“Every time I cross the Howard Frankland Bridge, I feel like I’m coming home,” Risemberg said. “I felt that way the first time, even before I’d ever been to St. Petersburg. I still feel that way today.”

Since then, he’s made that trip hundreds of times.

“I started following my spirit guides once I moved to Gulfport,” Risemberg said.

In the last seven years, Risemberg’s spirit guides have pushed him to start Moon Landing Yoga, a beekeeping business, worming classes, and a small homestead nursery in his backyard. He also sits on the board of directors at Sacred Lands.

He’s coined his, overgrown with banana trees and guarded by a nocturnal cat named Doliber, “Moon Landing.” It’s there that Risemberg started his beekeeping endeavor and earthworm fertilization situation – a series of bathtubs that house worms – in 2013.

He started with a sandwich bag of worms and one hive, and now proudly owns four “worm tubs” and eight buzzing hives. The bees can leave anytime they want; there are no walls in Moon Landing land.

The jarred honey goes quick, and the Risemberg hives produced a record 40 gallons.

Instead of blindly selling the worms, which he fears results in a slimy death for the creatures, Risemberg occasionally offers classes that detail how to carefully raise the fertilizer suppliers.

“I try not to interfere with their lives,” he said. “Animals thrive in as close to a natural setting as possible.”

That could be why Risemberg himself thrives in Gulfport: He’s a wild animal in a natural setting.

“The bees dropped in my lap, the worms fell in my lap, the chickens fell in my lap … instead of forcing some agenda I let things happen,” he said. “Money has to come because we need it to live, but you shouldn’t do things just for money.”

It’s that reason the barefoot farmer continues to offer Moon Landing Yoga classes twice a week on Gulfport Beach, for free.

He accepts donations, and Risemberg says people are quick to give.

“I only miss a class if I have to work,” said Moon Landing Yoga devotee Jody Robinson.

Robinson started attending Risemberg’s sandy classes religiously five years ago.

“I love Albert, he’s so comforting,” Robinson said. “That’s one thing about him, he tells you you’re special, and you believe him.”

2021: The Year That... Was

“Nobody claim 2022 as ‘your year’. We’re all going to walk in real slow. Be good. Be quiet. Be cautious and respectful. Don’t touch anything.” –Facebook meme Last year, our designer created a humorous illustration for the final issue of 2020, featuring rolls of toilet paper and masks. We used a simple headline: “Goodbye 2020” which sort of said it all.

2021 would certainly be better.

And 2021 certainly had its bright spots: Vaccines! No more lockdown! Doing things that required wearing pants! Champa Bay! Booster shots! St. Petersburg’s first Black mayor! Gulfport Rebound! Ted Lasso!

For my part, I cried when I could finally hug my parents when we, fully vaccinated, ate Easter dinner together. People started to believe in the economy enough that more advertisers returned to The Gabber. Most of

our staff found remnant or high-risk doses in March, and could stress a little less.

2020 set the bar pretty low, and while 2021 definitely cleared it, the year didn’t exactly set any records for “best year ever”: January 6. Delta. Omicron. Possibly more variants by the time this issue goes to press. Inflation. Supply chain woes. The opioid crisis.

Locally, we lost two Gulfport icons this year: Larry Enlow and Keith Stillwagon, and I know more families have felt the sting of loss. Small businesses struggled to find – or bring back – employees. Restaurants dealt with rising food costs and staff shortages.

In the following pages, we review 12 covers that show the year through our eyes, good and bad.

We don’t know what 2022 will bring, but we know this: We’ll report on whatever comes.

Tampa Bay’s Aquatic Preserves Get New ‘Friends’ P.8

One of the first street festivals hosted by the Gulfport Merchants Chamber in 2021, Gulfport’s Get Rescued will be bursting with furry energy up and down Beach Boulevard on Saturday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“These rescues really rely on us,” said GMC President Barbara Banno.

“Post COVID, we may not have as much food donated or donations, but we’re going to do everything we can for these rescues.”

The event is one large fundraiser for Florida-based animal rescues; more than 30 organizations and up to 70 pet-friendly vendors will decorate the Gulfport street for the 17th year.

“This really is a beloved tradition,” event organizer Suzie King, owner of SIK Promotions, said. “Get Rescued was the last street festival hosted by the Gulfport Merchant’s Chamber in 2020; we’re really excited to get to have it this year.”

Nearly a year later, the world has changed, and so has Gulfport’s furriest festival.

The Hidden World of Bees Photos and story by Abby Baker

Sarah Karakoudas is surrounded by hundreds of thousands of bees at her hidden hive location, nestled in what’s left of a thicket of Pinellas County woods. It may be an expensive career, but for Karakoudas, beekeeping is a passion.

Georgia native Karakoudas has been removing “pest” hives for six years. She relocates the buzzing nests to one of her wooden, artificial hives and rehabilitates the bees and helps them rebuild.

She suits up for a closer look at the hives, but the beekeeper makes one fact clear: Bee stings are a defense mechanism; if you steer clear of a hive, chances are, you won’t be stung.

“It’s proven that they even recognize faces; I hope they recognize mine,” she said. “They’re fascinating little creatures...the poster children for all pollinators.”

Indoor dining is fully open in Florida, but without willing and able staff, many St. Petersburg restaurants are forced to close temporarily.

The phenomena of busy bars and eateries versus a skeleton crew isn’t unique to St. Petersburg; it’s the reality of the hospitality industry across the entire state of Florida.

“I think there’s several ingredients that led us here,” said Robin Miller, President and CEO of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber recently launched a job placement service that puts job seekers’ resumes at local hiring businesses, namely restaurants and hotels. The office accepts resumes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 6990 Gulf Blvd.

But whether people can and want to return to work right now remains to be seen.

It’s only the beginning, but Gulfport showed pride at its Juneteenth celebration with predominantly Black vendors and strong community ties.

The holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking the day that news finally reached one of the last enslaved communities in Galveston, Texas in 1865. On Saturday, June 19 Gulfport held the first official celebration of Juneteenth, co-hosted by the city and Gulfport Kiwanis Club.

The grass behind the Gulfport Recreation Center was full of vendors and volunteers, and Marissa Stewart-Dix, President of the Gulfport Kiwanis Club, is to thank for the new event.

“I think we’re moving past certain attitudes, and I like to look to the future,” Stewart-Dix said.

The celebration featured vendors including St. Petersburg’s Blackowned and sustainably sourced Southside Fresh Market, as well as Truelight #6 Masonic Lodge and the Gulfport Lions Club, among others.

“The smiles on the kids’ faces is what did it for me; they are the focus,” Stewart-Dix said. “We look forward to

Gulfport Says Goodbye to Larry Enlow

Larry Enlow, the silver-haired accordion-playing fixture in Gulfport and co-owner of local arts nonprofit The Enroy Foundation Inc., died Saturday night, September 11, after a battle with a breakthrough case of COVID. Enlow, who was born and raised in Atlanta, left behind his wife and musical partner of 38 years, Maureen Kilroy, along with a whole community of people who will remember him as family.

“He housed the needy, fed the souls of every person he touched and gave everything he had to anyone who needed it,” said Caroline Duvoe, who heads Abstract Art for Autism. “It makes me so angry at those that care more about their ego than how they infect others who do not deserve to die because of their ignorance.”

After a lifetime as traveling musicians with a firm foot in Atlanta, the couple relocated permanently to Gulfport in 2013, where Enlow lived with Kilroy – who was paralyzed in an accident that same year – in their

After the challenge that was 2020, Pinellas County Schools were back in session on Wednesday, August 11.

While the pandemic isn’t over, the mask mandate is, and students at schools across the county could be seen in various stages of mask-wearing – some firmly worn, some askew and many tucked away in the bottom of backpacks or nonexistent.

Per the school board’s decision, PCS is not enforcing a mask mandate, instead leaving the decision up to students – most of whom are unvaccinated – and parents for the 2021-22 school year amidst a massive surge in COVID-19 cases sparked by the Delta variant. Masks are also optional for PCS teachers, staff and visitors.

Unlike neighboring school district, Hillsborough County, students need no “opt out” forms to leave a mask at home, a decision that prompted a rally of parents and healthcare professionals outside Pinellas County School’s district office two days before school started.

Mask up. Or not. After a summer of the world taking a victory lap over vaccines and not having to wear masks in Winn-Dixie, a sobering reality hit: Kids couldn’t get vaccinated, and Florida schools couldn’t require them to wear masks. More than one parent called our office in frustration.

Goodbye, friend. Larry Enlow’s death hit people hard. Not only did much of the community treasure Larry, it seemed unfair. After all, he’d done everything right – masking up, social distancing, and getting vaccinated. His death sent ripples through our community, and a tacit admission: This is not over.

Army Lieutenant Colonel Phyllis Plotnick and Navy Seaman Robert Stanley live a city apart, but they both joined the military at 22, in unconnected parts of the country, both gay, both serving at a time when queerness could result in discharge.

Here are their stories, told half a lifetime later.

The two main musicians who make up postmodern jazz band Hot Tonic rolled into Gulfport less than a year ago for a quick jam. Now, they’re playing local stages six days a week.

While there might be up to 10 people filling the stage for a Hot Tonic show, the root of their sound lies in the pairing

of Victoria Woods and Josh Hindmarsh.

She’s a 29-year-old from Columbus, Ohio on double bass and lead locals; he’s a 44-year-old from rural New Zealand on guitar and backup. The duo came together in Hot Tonic continued on page 18

At 21, Brianna Melton is directing, choreographing and dancing in the St. Petersburg Ballet Conservatory’s “The Nutcracker.”

A ballerina since she was three years old, Melton aims to dance for a Florida ballet company and eventually teach full time.

Her parents, Brian and Anna Melton, own the Gulfport-based ballet, so it was no surprise when the young ballerina took a break from searching for a company and stepped in the role of artistic director.

For months she’s been training a group of young dancers to take the stage. Melton pins their hair back, makes conversation around the “lipstick mirror”, and works diligently with dancers not much younger then herself.

But it wasn’t necessarily on a happy note.

Slide to Safe Once a year, Plotnick steps into the army-green uniform she wore for 21 years – three years active duty and 18 in the Army Reserves – to walk in Gulfport’s Veterans Day Parade.

“I might need to find my Spanx,” Plotnick jokes.

This year, pre-parade, she remembered life 50 years ago, when the Vietnam War was in full swing.

After a college softball injury inspired Pennyslania-born Plotnick to pursue a degree in physical therapy, she joined a medical program in the Army in 1969 – against her fathers wishes.

“The important part is that I slid into second and I was safe,” she jokes. “But really, I wanted financial independence. I have a great deal of respect for women in the military, but it was unusual at the time.”

At 22, Plotnick began treating Vietnam soldiers alongside a unit of female comrades. Their patients consisted of mainly men younger than Plotnick, often for life-changing injuries. For her, the results of war were beyond what

South Pinellas Recycling Rates Soar

Gulfport Has High Recycling Rate, But Room to Improve A 2019 National Geographic article states 91% of plastic worldwide isn’t recycled, which accounts for the tremendous amount of waste generated by modern society. We see horrors such as wildlife dying from eating plastic, and The Great Pacific Garbage Patch floating between Hawai’i and California that covers an estimated 1.6 million square kilometers—roughly three times the size of France.

In November, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida Recycling Partnership celebrated Florida Recycles Week, recognizing some “Heroes,” such as Northrup Grumman. The corporation recycles packing materials and other manufacturing goods …all well and good for giant corporations.

DEP Deputy Secretary John Truitt also acknowledged Pinellas County for achieving the 75% recycling goal in 2020, with 78%, along with Charlotte (78%) and Lee (74%}.

But what advice do the experts have for average folks to help this effort? Let’s see.

Gulfportians have a 70% recycling rate.

So, here’s the latest info from the local sanitation experts in Gulfport and St. Petersburg, where optional curbside recycling is available to households for about $3 monthly.

It’s Tricky Business Gulfport is Unique Skeptics and dedicated recyclers have heated debates on social media about recycling: Is it worth the trouble? Naysayers holler there’s no point because it all goes to the dump, true believers maintain recycling works when done properly, according to the rules. Yes, there are rules.

In Gulfport, recycling is done well, and 70% of residents participate in the program, according to Tom Nicholls, the city’s public works director.

“We have a unique program here in Gulfport,” said Nicholls. “We require participants to separate their

recyclables into two containers…a blue one for metal and plastic, and green for paper and cardboard. Because of this separation, Gulfport has the lowest contamination rate (of recyclables) in the county,” he said. But no plastic bags…they go straight to the landfill.”

ally has about 74,000 big blue recycling bins in use at a time.

“We use 95 gallon containers for curbside recycling,” said Valente.

“We collect about 15 thousand tons a year which is about 50 tons daily.”

That’s a lot of recycling all in one bin…and it has to be sorted. Unlike Gulfport’s pre-sorted recyclables, St. Pete’s blue bins go directly to the recycler, where it’s sorted out, both mechanically and by hand.

“Regular garbage goes to the Pinellas County solid waste facility mid-county, where it’s incinerated in the waste-to-energy program,” said Valente.

“We try to get people to our website,” he said, referring to the city’s website with all the “do’s and don’ts” of recycling.

“It’s an ongoing battle,” said Valente, “but we work hard to reduce contamination in recycling.”

“We can’t accept glass because it breaks and gets into things, and we can’t accept paper food containers,“ he said.” When someone puts glass with plastic, the workers will tag the box with a note for the resident explaining what’s wrong,” he said. ”It doesn’t take much to contaminate recyclables, so don’t put your greasy pizza boxes with the cardboard because they’ll go straight to the waste-to-energy [facility].“ Waste Management (the recycling company Gulfport contracts with) takes everything, and puts the recycling through their sophisticated sorting system. They sell metals and other products for the best price, while the refuse goes to the dump.

“There’s a lot of ‘wish recycling’ he said, where folks put things in the bin that we can’t take,” said Nicholls. ”We want to educate folks, and most are understanding.”

According to Nicholls, recycling was profitable when China was

accepting recycled materials, but now costs to recycle have doubled.

“At one time recycling paid for itself, so we hope the market turns around again,” he said, noting that Gulfport passed a recycling ordinance in July 1995.

“Now cities make no money, he said. “We used to pay $60 per ton, but now it’s up to $120 per ton. It all depends on the market.”

Regardless of how or why the bird arrives, medical professionals treat it and create a treatment plan. Sometimes that requires additional fluids and fish for particularly underweight birds.

“It’s all kind of a case-by-case basis as far as what we’re going to do for each individual patient that comes in,” Chilbert told The Gabber.

And case-by-case is right, as the hospital doesn’t permit some feathery friends – namely invasive species – at all. In those cases, the sanctuary

works to find other places that can aid with their survival.

“If it’s a non-native invasive species, we legally can’t re-release it back into the wild, so we have to find other sanctuaries to take those birds,” Concerned visitors who bring the classically Florida (but nonnative) Muscovy ducks are turned away. The same goes for escaped or dumped pets.

Chilbert adds that the sanctuary runs on donations and needs “laundry detergent, bleach, apples, blueberries, grapes. We have an Amazon wish list.”

While Seaside Seabird Sanctuary is home to characters like a blind screech owl and an American bald eagle who’s unable to fly because someone shot him, the sanctuary’s goal is not to keep the animals that come into their care. Since opening in 2016, the goal is rehab, rescue and release, and the sanctuary often relies on the public to aid in rescue missions.

“If you’re comfortable enough picking the bird up [and putting] it in a secure box or a crate, something like that, you can just bring it directly to us,” said Christina Chilbert, the business development director at the avian refuge.

When a pedestrian rescue isn’t in the cards, a team of mostly volunteer status bird enthusiasts fly into action, gloves at the ready.

The injured bird hot line receives 10,800 calls every year – with volunteers clocking an average of 3,600 rescues annually to coincide with the rising numbers of injured animals.

A Closer Look at a Suspected Overdose

The Medical Examiner Wants an Investigation into a Potential Fentanyl Death

Gulfport Police are taking a hard look at the recent death of a 57-yearold man.

Police are looking into the death of the man who lived near 14th Avenue South and Freemont Street South. Gulfport Police Sergeant Thomas Woodman said the medical examiner’s office has requested an investigation into the Dec. 11 death.

Woodman said the man died after first responders transported him to the hospital.

Authorities await a toxicology report to help determine the cause of death. Police indicated the man’s friends and family said there were no indications of prior drug use.

Police have provided decedent’s name, but The Gabber has opted not to publish it.

Gulfport has seen a spate of recent overdoses and overdose deaths.

That includes a fatality on Dec. 1 and two other overdose victims revived

Police and the medical examiner’s office for Pinellas and Pasco counties are investigating other potential overdose deaths, Woodman said.

Tyrone Square Mall has a drop of train culture, thanks to Gulfport filmmaker (and now toy train conductor) Victoria Jorgensen.

Jorgesen recently opened Sunshine Express, a mini train that drives children and adults around Tyrone Mall for seven minutes of unadulterated caravan-goodness.

“I just kind of fell in love with it,” Jorgesen said.

The Gulfport resident was introduced to the concept by a family member who runs Rocky Mountain Railroad in Colorado. Sunshine Express is the Pinellas version of the Colorado parent company.

“It brings out the kid in everybody,” said Jorgensen.

Jorgensen hopes to eventually expand her railroad to other parts of the St. Petersburg area.

Gabber Staff Picks: Top Five Favorite Local Pieces of Art After an Art-Filled Year A huge chunk of what I write for the Gabber is arts-related, so I meet more than my fair share of artists on my quest for local stories. Some of the pieces are fantastic, and some are... not.

I love them all.

Our hub of newbie and professional artists, and many houses with home studios... well, it says something about us as a community.

The Food Forest Book If you know Gulfport, you know Crea Egan.

Last May, when I heard that Egan, who founded the Gulfport Food Forest, wrote a book, I was intrigued.

“What the Tree Whispered” has poems and surreal drawings. It feels like a private love letter between Egan and her own spirituality.

I’ve dropped mine in the bathtub twice, so it’s definitely a compelling read.

“I’m going to keep creating this series until I feel it’s time to stop,” Davis once told me. “It’s not time yet.”

“What the Tree Whispered” is Crea Egan’s child-like book full of “what ifs” about how to love ourselves and the earth.

I saw this painting of St. Petersburg’s Lassing Park by Vivia Barron before I ever saw the scene she molded it after in real life.

When I stumbled on the beachside park while house sitting in the Old Southeast, it was the most bizarre deja vu. But unlike Barron’s depiction, the real deal lacks diversity.

The Queen’s Gambit Interpretation Confession: I’ve never seen the quarantine favorite, “The Queen’s Gambit,” and I know nothing about the actor artist Camilla Byrd depicts, Anya Taylor-Joy. Nevertheless, I love this painting.

Specifically, the detail of the newspaper and her warped eyebrows.

I’ll most likely never watch the Netflix show, but I will continue to follow Byrd’s work.

Creative Clay Student Marissa Harris Writes What’s Difficult to Say It’s apparent when visiting Marissa Harris’s apartment that her art comes home with her.

Handmade ornaments surround the Creative Clay artist, as well as cat sculptures modeled after her own pair of felines and a crumpled but delicate poem, written by Harris and St. Petersburg Poet Laureate Helen Pruitt Wallace.

Harris worked with Wallace through the Creative Clay Art Link program this past November to create a poem that reflects on family and Harris’s Cherokee heritage, titled “The Dream Catcher.”

The 25-year-old Creative Clay student does not have absolute control over the articulation of her words or her hand movements, but her writing is clear. ‘who I am is more than what you see,” she writes in “The Dream Catcher.”

The poem that she and Wallace worked together on was in reference to a painting modeled after an actual dream catcher Harris once owned.

The dreamcatcher is long gone, maybe lost in Harris’s move from Oregon to St. Petersburg, but it lives on in painted form and written word.

To Harris, each of the dreamcatcher’s colors represent a different memory associated with a family member, including “Aunt Judy,” who first in-

“The laureate told me to dive deeper into the art that I already created, so hopefully I will continue with that,” Harris said. “I want to make an art show with every piece having a poem to it.”

Harris needed inspiration, as she’s in the last leg of writing her murder mystery novel, “Trail of Tears.” The book’s been in limbo for the last seven years, but with a final push, Harris’s manuscript will soon make its debut.

Fiona Frensche’s JazzyPopaNova Catch Her Style on St. Pete Beach With a smooth, soothing tone and an innovative blend of bossa nova, jazz and pop, New York singer Fiona Frensche delights audiences. Frensche plays Wine Down Wednesdays at 6 p.m. every Wednesday in December at the Grape Wine Cafe in St. Pete Beach. She has additional slots at Verducci’s and gigs with her own French Club this December. Frensche spoke with The Gabber about her experience and the local music scene.

Did you come up with the name JazzyPopaNova?

Yes, I did. I worked on cruise ships for 10 years and I got introduced to jazz, to pop and to bossa nova.

On cruise ships, basically 3 percent of us are Americans, and there are bands from Brazil and Eastern European bands, and of course, I’m the popster.

What do you hope to bring to the audience with Wine Down Wednesdays?

I was very active in the [New York] art scene. It reminds me the most, at this point, of what I used to do in New York. As a musician, you’re only one part of the piece. The Wine Down Wednesdays feature authors; there’s a perfumer. This is like a little

more of a night nook, where you’re going to go and hopefully make new friends, but talk, hopefully talk about art, music and anything else.

How do you feel this scene is different from other scenes you’ve played, like in New York or on cruise ships?

So here, you’re developing relationships. Even at my jazz bars, I have people, it’s their fourth year back. I just love our vibrant diversity in the music that we have here. With the jazz pools, and of course the pop bands, and the guitar bands, and the singer-songwriters. I mean if you come to our community, meaning Gulfport, meaning St. Pete Beach,

you will find what you’re looking for.

You can find anything.

Do you switch up your set list for each event you play?

I would die of boredom if I didn’t. It’s fun to mix it up; as musicians, it’s terrible to just do the same thing every night, and people read that immediately. They know when you start going on autopilot, they pick up on that. So no matter how many times I say I’ll never do “Bobby McGee” again, I’ll do it!
