Family Portrait BY KAREN MCILVAINE
When we look at our relatives we sometimes see, maybe even most times for some of us, a portrait that isn’t picture perfect. They come in all shapes and sizes. In other words, they come with lots of different personalities and characteristics. Some of them not so nice while others sweet as pie. Some happy, some sad. Some who only see themselves and others who care about everyone else. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain, we do not have a choice who our relatives are.
There are also others we call family. They may be the friends we choose or even those who are our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. These may be the ones that we find a little easier to love. Whatever the case may be, there is no difference between them in today’s world compared to over 2,019 years ago. Let us look at those who surrounded Jesus. He truly showed us that family and friends will have imperfections yet He loved them nonetheless. Peter denied even knowing Jesus. Yet Jesus not only forgave him He trusted him to be the foundation He would build His church upon. Judas betrayed Him. Timothy doubted who Jesus was. The very people Jesus was chosen for crucified Him. Do you see any similarities in the people in your life? More importantly, do you see any similarities in your response to them? Are you forgiving? Are you loving? Are you exemplifying the very essence of who Jesus is to those who hurt you the most?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
FAMILY
It isn’t easy for us to lay down our feelings and walk in complete love. There is a struggle that lies within our souls. It yells out they should get what they deserve – an eye for an eye. They should be treated the way they have treated me. Imagine if Jesus treated us the way we treat Him. Oh brothers and sisters we would be in trouble if that were the case. However, if we look at Jesus and the way He treated those around Him as well as how he treats us – with undeniable love – how could we not want to be like Him.
I feel so blessed that I have imperfect family members and friends that I get to love on no matter what they have done or how they live. I have found that by walking in forgiveness toward them has allowed me to love on them no matter what. In the moments that it seems almost impossible to do that I remind myself of Jesus on the cross taking that ultimate sacrifice and the words He spoke – “Forgive them they know not what they do.” It is at that moment I don’t see their flaws anymore and I just love them where they are at.
There are times that we slip up. It is okay. Just ask for forgiveness and in knowing that you are forgiven by God you will be free to love on them once more. It truly is a beautiful picture of heaven on earth.

Vulnerable Journal #29 BY AERON BROWN ARTWORK BY AERON BROWN
Tend to the garden of your mind and you will yield a harvest- AB I've seen how simple thoughts have been sown into my mind only to spring up like a huge choking weed that takes life from my garden. It's not easy to get the weeds out once they have taken root. Gardens take work.
The mind you carry, takes work. Don't let the lies spring up and defile your garden Aeron. You can renew your mind with the washing of the word, that will loosen the soil to pull up the weeds. But it takes work. But by working on yourself Aeron, you can help others. Your garden doesn't just affect you, it affects everything and everyone around you. Tend to your garden child. It will cause their gardens to grow also.

One highlight of the tour was visiting Christ Church. I love old churches and this one did not disappoint. This beautiful structure was built in 1884. However, the original congregation began worshiping together in 1736, more than a hundred years prior. In those days there wasn't an actual building so they met on these grounds under one of the old oaks. I was surprised to learn that both John and Charles Wesley, the sons of Susanna Wesley led some of these early services. I didn't know much about the brothers, but their mom is often talked about in our ladies bibles studies.
Susanna Wesley's prayer life has always impressed me. Despite a hard life full of loss and a very difficult marriage, or perhaps because of it, she routinely and intentionally made time to pray and read her bible. She would throw her apron over her head to create a tent so that she could have a bit of private time with the Lord, and all 10 of her children all knew this gesture meant 'Do Not Disturb'. Apparently her prayers paid off!
Other aspects that fascinated me about this church were the cemetery which has tombs that predate even the first church structure, the carved pews that are from the original church which was built in 1820, the pews where some of our U.S. presidents have sat, and of course the beautiful stained glass windows. Be sure to check out the quiet pathway across from the church as well. It drew me. Unfortunately, we didnt have time for meandering today, but my heart longed desperately to walk slowly and prayerfully along its path. Perhaps next time.

Another special must see treat are the Tree Spirits of SPIRITUAL St. Simons Island. Back in the 1980's, artist Keith Jennings hand-carved unique faces on 20 of the island's old oak trees. They are scattered about so half the fun is in finding them! We didn't get to see these on this visit but if I ever make it back to the island I will definitely be doing the Tree Spirit Scavenger hunt. I hear it is a great family activity.

This restaurant sits on the corner of a busy intersection, so parking is a bit of a challenge but you must try this place if you like BBQ. Well, it is time to bring today's journey to an end. Precious Gift of Time BY LAURA HAUSMAN PHOTOS BY LAURA HAUSMAN
Another morning, another day blessed just to be alive. Sometimes I rush into prayer so ready to ask God for things, to turn situations around, to grant me my heart’s desires, etc., that I actually forget what's really important, and that is to thank Him for being alive, to thank Him for what He has already done and all He has brought me through. I forget to just spend time with Him, in His presence and just love Him. I know and understand all too well how it must grieve His Our Heavenly Father has this same desire for heart when His children are not spending time with us. He longs to spend time with us, to hear our Him at all. Parents experience this as their children hearts’ desires, to know our pains, our joys, our grow up. They begin to pick other things over disappointments. When I began to feel at a spending even a moment with you. As my two older deep heart level the "missing" of my children, children are practically grown, I long for an hour of the moments that we shared daily for so many face to face time or even a 10 minute talk to just years, I began to understand how vitally "catch up" on their world and what's going on in their important it is that we spend quality time with hearts. I know this doesn't mean my kids love me any God. It really is a decision that we make. Just less however, this doesn't remove the need or rather like our children, they have the time for us, they the longing to spend time with them. really do, they just more so than not choose to spend it on other things. I'm not judging by any means. We have all left our parents feeling unimportant and forgotten at times however, I do believe that spending time with one another, and especially with the Lord, is of extreme importance to our spirits and wellbeing.

SPIRITUAL
I believe it's the single most important thing you can do in order for someone to know they are loved and cared for. In this fast paced world we live in, everyone seemingly in a hurry to get somewhere, it's time we slow down and examine how we are really spending our time. The 24 hours of precious time we get each day however we choose should count. Whether we like to admit it or not, we are in charge of how we spend these hours even down to the jobs we give 40 hours a week to. It's time to radically rise up and take back our moments. Our lives are made up of single moments that turn into hours, days, weeks, months and before we blink another year has passed by. Don't let life tell you how you're going to spend these moments, search your heart and spend them in such a way that they make a difference to you, your family and those you are blessed to encounter in your lifetime. How will you steward your gift of time today? Make it count!

Hear the Sound BY AMADA MIA Oh wait upon The Lord, oh my soul. Find rest in the shadow of His wings. To The One that sits upon the throne. Does my worship and praise rise above. Let my petitions rise as sweet incense. As I begin to speak in an unknown tongue. Oh the wonder and mystery of my God! Here I am! Abba Father, here I am! Oh, how Your Holy Spirit moves me! I fall on my face and worship You! With the cherubims and angelic host! Your holy presence fills this room. I sing a new song unto The Lord. My lips will sing praises unto You. Making melodies will I sing psalms. Hear the sound of the angel's choral. To the tune of God's soulful hymns. Sounds of the instrumental orchestra. Musical rhythm of the trumpet and harp. The harp and the lyre and heaven's dance. Oh, I will dance like King David danced. The composer is The Lord Jesus Christ! I, join the angel's singing in the refrain. We harmonize in the notes of the song.

Dear Momma of a child with food allergies.... BY ASHLEY LANDRETH
I see you. I see you sitting in the allergist’s office comforting your child as they undergo yet another round of skin tests. I see the look of panic on your face as you are reading that EpiPen box for the first time. You silently hope and pray that you won’t ever have to actually use it. I see the worry on your face and the anxiety in your heart every time you leave your toddler in the care of another. I see you as you drop your toddler off in the church nursery and pray they don’t accidentally pick up another child’s sippy cup filled with milk. You triple check your child’s backpack every time you leave the house to be sure that it is stocked with allergen-free snacks, hand wipes, Benadryl, and EpiPen.
I know you are mentally exhausted from all of the meticulous food prep, extra hand washing, and late night Googling. You’ve had a long day and you just want to be able to cook a quick & easy dinner for your family. But for those of us with a child with multiple food allergies, there is no such thing as a simple family dinner.
You wonder if your child will ever outgrow their allergies. Or just be able to order off of a regular restaurant menu one day. I see you secretly worrying that your child might get left out of class parties and birthday celebrations. Or worse, have to sit at a separate lunch table all alone every day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
I see you on the playground when you overhear a group of moms talking about the “inconvenience” of not being able to pack their child’s favorite pb&j sandwich in their lunch because “A little boy named Ayrton in their class has a peanut allergy”. You feel hurt and sad that others view your child’s potentially fatal condition as an inconvenience to those without food allergies. Mama, I’ve been there. Each and every time. This journey is hard. Many of our own friends and family have no idea of the struggles we often face on a regular basis. And sometimes it’s the littlest things in life that are the hardest for a mama’s heart to handle. But, for all of the anxiety and fear that comes along with food allergies, you have also come to realize there is a lot of joy in the journey, too. Like the time when you give your toddler their first (allergy-friendly) cookie and then see the huge smile on their face as they taste chocolate for the first time. In that moment, you realize they are just like every other toddler their age enjoying the simple pleasures of childhood. It’s the simple things, isn’t it? I see you standing in the aisle of the grocery store practically jumping for joy when you finally find chocolate chip cookies free of the top 8 allergens (that don’t cost $10). Or when your local grocery store finally carries your child’s favorite brand of coconut milk yogurt. You breath a sigh of relief in the drive thru at Chick-fil-A because you know it’s a place where your child can enjoy a quick meal on the go. Dining out with food allergies presents many challenges, so you are incredibly thankful to find a restaurant your child can safely eat at. You know the joy of seeing your baby try a new food and not react to it. Another food that your child CAN eat. I see your eyes well up with happy tears when your child’s teacher goes out of her way to find allergy-friendly sweet treats for the class Halloween party. You know she didn’t have to do that, but you are so grateful to find people that care for and love on your baby when they are away from you. Mama, I see you. Through all of the good, the bad, and the ugly. As each day passes, you will start to feel more confident about navigating life with a child with food allergies. You’ll find allergy-friendly kid snacks and amazing recipes that the whole family will enjoy. And you’ll discover so many amazing resources that are committed to helping you and your child live the best life possible. If you meet a fellow food allergy mama, give her a hug and make a connection. I promise you that there are other mamas out there that have been in your shoes and would love to offer support to you.
We are in this together. You’ve got this, mama.
