The sourcing of newsprint is a major environmental concern for publishers and we at NWN Media source our newsprint from UPM Kymmene in Deeside, utilising their 100% recycled paper, which is produced as a natural, renewable and recyclable fibre from sustainable, responsibly managed forests. UPM is committed to forest management and forest harvesting practices based on the internationally accepted principles of sustainable forest management. UPM Kymmene is just a mile from the press site, which also keeps carbon footprint to a minimum in the obtaining of our paper. All newsprint waste is taken back to UPMʼs site and fully recycled.

Please don't put your food waste in black bags Monmouthshire Council is encouraging householders to use their food waste bin in order to cut down on the amount of black bags we send to landfill and help keep our streets clean and tidy. A recent survey, carried out by the council, showed Monmouthshire residents produce around 6,000 tonnes of food waste each year. That’s equivalent to 6,000 small cars a year and amounts to an average of 3 kg per house per week. 27% of this food waste is even unopened! Despite Monmouthshire being the first Council in Wales to introduce food waste collections it is disappointing that 70% of our food waste still goes into the black bags. We are urging householders to use their food waste bin to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill and ensure we continue to lead the way on recycling. Separating food waste from your regular black bin waste is easy. All food types are accepted, including meat and fish both cooked and uncooked, fruit and vegetable peelings, dairy products, bread, cakes and pastries, rice, beans and pasta. Even the bits that you wouldn’t normally eat, such as eggshell and bones, can go into your food waste bin. Tea bags and coffee grounds can

also be recycled, along with the leftovers from your plate at the end of a meal. Food waste takes up landfill space, and produces harmful gases such as methane as it rots which contributes to global warming and increases the threat of climate change. Left in the general waste food attracts animals - without the food animals would not be interested in your waste. Rachel Jowitt, Waste Strategy Manager at Monmouthshire Council commented: “If it’s treated properly food waste can be a valuable resource. Monmouthshire’s food (and green) waste is taken to a facility within the county which turns the waste into compost which meets all the set standards and is then sold or given

back to the agricultural community for use on their land. It is a win win situation – waste back to food. What could be better? Everyone creates a small amount of food waste, so we are asking you please to simply use your caddy to make sure this waste can be turned into something useful instead of damaging the environment.” Kitchen Caddies and replacement blue, food waste boxes, can be obtained by contacting your local Council One Stop Shop. Liners for the kitchen caddies are also available from the one stop shop. Abergavenny One Stop Shop is at the Town Hall, Cross Street 01873 735800.

Making renewable energy more affordable for everyone Think solar PV is beyond your budget? Thanks to an innovative group-buying scheme run by a Brecon Beacons-based social enterprise, solar PV and other renewable energy technolgies are now more affordable for everyone. Called Reach For The Renewables, the project is the brainchild of local social entrepreneur Michael Butterfield and is run in partnership with the Llangattock Green Valleys Community Interest Company. The scheme is based on simple economies of scale: ‘We organise surveys and installations in “bundles”,’ explains Michael, ‘so we make absolutely the best use of our installers’ time, which reduces their costs. ‘Plus we’re a no-frills outfit. We provide firstclass kit and our installers, Exenergy, of Ebbw Vale, provide free Energy Performance Certificates (see panel) and are fully accredited under the Government’s Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). But we don’t have flash offices, big marketing budgets or teams of people behind the scenes. It’s all very lean – and that means rock-bottom prices for our customers.’ And the benefits don’t end there, says Michael: ‘The 21p Feed In Tariff makes solar PV an excellent investment, offering returns of up to

13.2% on our current prices. That’s far better than any bank or building society. Plus by generating your own free electricity you can protect yourself from rising energy costs. ‘What’s more, because LGV is a community interest company, any profits go towards developing more local renewable energy projects. So by choosing Reach For The Renewables you’re not just helping yourself, you’re helping to create a more sustainable future for the whole area.’ Already households across the Brecon Beacons have had solar PV installed through the scheme. Solar thermal hot water systems and voltage optimisation are also available, and air and ground source heat pumps will be added to the offering soon, along with woodburning stoves and biomass boilers. But as Michael says, renewable technologies are just part of the jigsaw. ‘There’s no point installing renewables to help you save energy if your home is poorly insulated, or you have an old, inefficient boiler. That’s why we also offer excellent prices on the latest A-rated boilers and on loft, cavity wall and external wall insulation, starting from just £49 for loft or cavity wall insulation for a standard mid-terrace or semidetached property. To find out more about Reach For The Renewables visit www.rftr.co.uk

■ Reach For The Renewables’ solar PV prices start from £4,084 (including volume discount) for a 1.5kWp (6-panel)

scheme. A 12-panel (3.0kWp) scheme like the one shown here costs as little as £6,398.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATES Since 1 April 2012, your home must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) at Grade D or above to qualify for the maximum 21p per kilowatt Feed-In Tariff. Otherwise the rate drops to just 9p. The EPC assessment looks at things such as insulation and how you heat your home. It also includes recommendations on how you can make your home more energy efficient and improve your grading. If your home falls below Grade D but you want

to receive the full Feed-In Tariff, you will need to carry out the recommended measures before your solar panels are installed. And even if your home is Grade D or above, it’s still well worth following up the advice, because basic measures such as topping up your loft insulation to 270mm, or installing temperature regulating valves (TRVs) on your central heating radiators cost relatively little and can have a significant impact on your energy bills.

New Dawn Energy Ltd welcomes the increase in interest in renewable energy technology, such as solar panels and air source and ground source heat pumps, as it demonstrates how more people are keen to create a greener environment through money-saving, and often money-making, systems. With over 5 years’ experience fitting solar systems to homes and businesses in Monmouthshire, Gwent, Powys, Herefordshire and surrounding areas, the company offers a professional service with high-quality products. In launching New Dawn’s Spring Solar PV Sale, Director of New Dawn Energy, Neil Evans, stated: “We are proud to give friendly, professional advice rather than a salespitch, so that our customers are supported in making the best choice for their property. We are always up-to-date on the Government’s Feed-In Tariff scheme and other legislation and enjoy sharing our expertise with potential customers. Our installers are all fully accredited and we only use the best quality products. All in all, we believe the high-quality service and systems we provide speak for themselves as

over 90% of our new clients are referred to us by previous happy customers.” Discussing the energy efficiency of homes, Director, Darren Morgan, said: “We are pleased to be able to provide all our Solar PV customers with a free energy efficiency assessment. This identifies ways people can make their home more energy efficient as renewable energies aren’t the only way to save energy and create a greener future.” As well as installing air source and ground source heat pumps, New Dawn Energy are experts in greywater diversion and rainwater harvesting for homes and businesses. As pressure builds on the country’s water supplies, more people are looking to these low cost systems to reduce their use of fresh drinking water. Director, Darren Morgan, added: “We can advise on the best system for an individual home or business. This could be to reuse water from the bath or shower, or to collect rainwater. Many of the systems we fit are very low cost and yet very effective.” For further information contact New Dawn Energy on 01432 800 018 or info@newdawn-energy.co.uk

The public display is the culmination of a project involving a number of Monmouthshire groups and businesses. Green Park Power, a local solar panel company, installed the electrical works and oversaw the commissioning of the installation. Gwent Energy, a community interest company dedicated to supporting alternative energy, provided the initial design and managed the project. Roofrite, of Abertillery, mounted the panels whilst installing a brand new roof. Richard Lewis Chairman of Homemakers said ‘We are exceptionally proud of our green

Spotlight on Abergavenny Market John Witheridge is one of the newest stallholders at Abergavenny Market with his collection of film and music memorabilia. Stage Door came to the market a year ago and John quickly built up a reputation for a range of quality collectables including autograph pictures, posters, records and DVDs. John said: “I think Abergavenny market was a good choice as it offers a good location for small businesses. “I’ve always collected and it started with a fascination for bank notes and coins as a teenager. In later years I began thinking collection was hoarding by another name so began selling the collections I had built up over many decades. “I had been a retail manager for a large DIY firm and I gained my business acumen from this and used this knowledge to set up this stall. It’s definitely a challenge, but at the same time most rewarding as I feel its personality that counts. “Items connected with Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley are always popular as are today’s artists of One Direction, JLS and Jessie J. But the biggest seller must be anything to do with the television series Only Fools and Horses. “However it’s the songs and memorabilia from film and theatre that gets the most interest from market

visitors. People come here one week and see these items on sale and it reminds them that they have something similar stored in their attic. The next week they are back selling me, what had not seen the light of day in many cases for many decades.” Along side the movie memorabilia are posters for the variety acts in theatres and music halls around the country which date back to the 1840s, many of which depict the stars of the 20th Century among the bill’s support act and these include Des O’Connor, Ken Dodd and Morecombe and Wise. “I don’t collect for myself anymore,” said John. “It’s always sad to let go of something I have treasured for so long, but I know in this trade that it will be treasured by its new owner. I even had a big collection of Toby jugs, which I know have gone to good homes. “In the past year Sir Derek Jacobi (the actor and film director) and Chris Jagger (brother of Rolling Stone Mick) have both shown an interest in my stall. John concludes: “Posters from whatever era they are produced in reveal a lot about that particular period of history. It’s an untapped resource that is being picked up by the public who are interested in the early days of film, concerts music halls or entertainment in general. Even reproduction posters from the Wild West are extremely popular.”

Finance

Spring clean your finances in 2012 Many will be looking to organise their finances before the start of the financial year next month after hitting the sales at the beginning of the year. Danny Cox, at financial advisor Hargreaves Lansdown, says: “Now is the best time to dust off old investments and pensions and review how they are doing. Is it time to cash in your Premium Bonds? Are you making the most of all your cash savings? And have you made the most of all your tax efficient allowances?" Kevin Mountford, head of banking at comparison site

moneysupermarket.com, says: “We are all feeling the pinch, especially after the increase in VAT in January , and it is too easy to sit on mediocre financial products which give a poor rate of return or cost far more than necessary. “Significant savings can often be made by switching to better deals found by a few minutes of research." Mortgages are an obvious area to make savings - although many people can’t be bothered to change when prospects for interest rates remain so uncertain. Ray Boulger, at broker John Charcol, says: “If you are paying more than 3% on your loan, and have more than 15% equity in your home, you are probably paying too much and could find something better. “Many people on standard variable rate (SVR) loans at the end of a fixed period can’t be bothered to move and are waiting to see what happens next." Boulger thinks it

is still too early to fix, with eurozone problems set to cause more turmoil in 2011. Three providers of tracker mortgages - Woolwich, Nationwide and Scottish Widows - offer a droplock option to switch easily into a fix when the going gets tough. For those who seriously overspent during 2011, there’s often something to be said for consolidating various loans into one new loan. And what about interest earned on your spare cash? For most holders of bank accounts, the rate of interest paid on your money has drained away so drastically that you hardly notice the item on your bank statement. Next up are credit cards - which take much punishment during December when presents end up costing more than planned. The obvious strategy for 2012 is to always pay more than the minimum monthly payment, to slash interest charged on the outstanding balance. On both cars and houses insurance premiums have gone through the roof for many consumers this year - which is a strong argument for shopping around. Follow these simple tips to shave those premiums: Don’t over-estimate the level of

cover needed on your home, and pay annually for home insurance rather than monthly. If you are a younger motorist, adding an older driver to a car insurance policy can also help cut costs. Travel insurance is becoming expensive too particularly since the fiasco of Iceland’s volcanic eruptions, which have cost millions in claims. Several banks include travel insurance in their standard package. These include the Nationwide FlexAccount, which offers free European multitrip cover worth up to £80 for a couple. Energy bills are a growing worry - with many household budgets likely to have been hammered already. Common sense measures can trim energy costs - turning down the thermostat by 1°C can cut your annual bill by 10%. Also loft and cavity wall insulation can save up to 35% of heat loss, so installation costs are soon cancelled out by savings. Turning appliances off at the wall instead of leaving them on standby mode also reduces costs. Finally, it may be the right time to rethink your home TV and IT systems: Bundling your TV, landline and broadband together into one package can result in big savings.

Ceritech Audio Electrical retailers were once a common site on the high street, but with advances in digital technology these began to slowly disappear from view.

But now one independent company in Monmouth is bucking the trend and is accompanying the best that vinyl has to offer along with the latest in music streaming and surround sound systems for watching DVDs. Ceritech Audio, at 5 Monnow Bridge, is run by husband and wife team Sam and Simon Jackson who established the business in 2000 from their home in the Forest of Dean. But it wasn’t long before their hi-fi business outgrew this set up, so the couple relocated to the Wyastone Leys Business Park, home to Nimbus Records, where Simon and Sam created purpose built audio and cinematic listening rooms to showcase the equipment they had to offer. Over the following years the company began creating a loyal customer base as the business expanded and embraced all the modern developments of downloading music and streamlining tracks from smart phones and computers. Sam said: “We aim to cater for everybody’s budget from the top of the range to the affordable along with a wide range of cables, headphones and other accessories. “We have equipment made by British manufacturers including Raga and Naim along with other makes including Pioneer, Moon, Onkyo, Denson and Teac. “The sale of turntables has increased as vinyl has gained in popularity over the past ten years. It’s amazing to see the look on youngsters faces,

who are no strangers to downloading and playing music, but have never experienced hearing a vinyl record being played.” Sam pointed out that the way we listen to music has moved on in many ways, but to some the old ways are better. She said that Ceritech caters for all hi-fi enthusiasts. The company has evolved at a steady pace and now employs two additional members of staff. Simon added: “We believe in old fashioned values by offering a personal consultation service to our visitors, something you definitely don’t get on line and is sadly lacking by the major electrical retailers. “We know our range of products intimately and have the experience to know what equipment works best with which speakers and other accessories.” Among the ranges Ceritech Audio offer is a television system that takes viewing to a new level with a projection system that can be almost completely hidden and integrated into any living room. The company provides a custom installation service from wiring in additional speakers to wiring an entire house for all its audio and visual needs.

Titchmarsh’s tips on plants for poor conditions We caught up with TV gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh recently, who has been busy covering the horticultural show circuit offering advice to the public on all-weather plants which will grow in the worst conditions. At BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham, he started on the subject of clay. Those with clay soil often despair that they’re unable to dig it in really wet weather when it becomes so sticky and gluey it resembles a quagmire, while at the first sign of hot weather it goes as hard as rock and even the strongest gardener won’t be able to get a fork into it. Of course, you can improve heavy clay soil by digging in as much well-rotted organic matter as you can and adding plenty of gritty horticultural sand to help drainage. Clay soil doesn’t drain easily and tends to become waterlogged in persistent wet weather. Alan, however, says clay isn’t all bad and that as a general rule don’t try to fight the conditions, but make the most of plants that are happy growing in your type of soil. Clay particles hold in nutrients, so the more clay and humus there is in the soil, the more nutrients it can hold. This means that clay is actually among the most fertile of soils. He says: “Willows love damp earth and clay. Salix daphnoides (Violet Willow) can be grown like dogwood. Chop it down in February and it will grow new stems, providing winter colour and foliage in spring. It’s fast growing and will reach 8ft in each season." Other great shrubs Alan recommends for clay include Viburnum ‘Pragense', a rounded evergreen type with narrow, textured leaves and clusters of pink buds which open to white flowers in late spring. Euphorbias, spiraeas, rodgersias and, of course, roses, will all thrive in clay soil. “There’s the wonderful Rosa rugosa - the flowers look like crepe paper, don’t get mildew or blackspot, make waist-high informal hedges and have hips following the flowers," Alan adds. Other plants which do well in clay soils include Choisya ternata (Mexican orange blossom), Hydrangea paniculata, Kerria japonica, Mahonia x media ‘Charity’ and Weigela ‘Kosteriana Variegata'. While clay may be one problem, shade is another,

but there are plants which will survive the most inhospitable situations. Hostas love shade and you can buy copper collars to place around them to prevent slugs and snails chomping their way through the young shoots. Another exotic-looking plant which loves shade and needs relatively little maintenance, says Alan, is the fatsia, with its bold, glossy leaves. If the frost catches it, just chop off the damaged leaves and strong new growth should soon appear. If you have dry shade, look no further than Acanthus mollis, commonly known as bear’s breech, a perennial which will cope well with drought and poor soils. “It’s an architectural beauty with towering, stiff spikes of purple-hooded, white or pink flowers above good, glossy green leaves," Alan adds. Some bamboos will also thrive in shade, but make sure if you have limited space you buy the clump-forming varieties rather than those which spread rampantly and are then extremely difficult to dig up. Phyllostachys nigra, black bamboo, which reaches a height of 5m (16ft), is a brilliant clumpforming type - with arching canes which turn black after a couple of years - and looks wonderful in a modern, minimalist setting. It can also be grown in large containers if they are not allowed to dry out, but needs some direct sunlight to ripen the canes fully. Blue bamboo, Himalayacalamus hookerianus ‘Himalaya Blue', which grows to 6m, is perfect for smaller gardens, adding tall interest to shady areas, with its blue-green stems. Look carefully and you will find a wider range of all-weather plants than you first thought.

. . . o u D Dear if you would like dear duo to help with your problems, please write to Dear Duo, The Gazette and Diary, 13 Nevill Street, Abergavenny, NP7 5AA.

Dear Duo A friend of mine has always been very flirty with me, and eventually last year I asked him out, thinking he was interested and I would like to give things a try. However, he was very blunt in his refusal and left me feeling rather embarassed. However, he became more flirty than ever after that, and was very attentive and complimentary towards me, more tactile than usual and our friends started commenting on it. This has carried on for months, until recently he started going out with someone else, but has continued to be very flirty even when his girlfriend is present. I don't know if he is just being inappropriate towards me, doesn't realise how he is coming across or whether he is interested but just kidding himself. Just wondered what other people thought? Lacey Hi Lacey From the information you have given here, it sounds like this guy is using you for his own gratification. If he has a girlfriend then his behaviour is disrespectful to her as well. While most people i know who are in a relationship admit to indulging in a little bit of harmless flirting every now and then, they all have respect for their

partner not to do it in front of them. If he has turned you down already and is now with someone else then i think you should cut your losses and move on. At least you tried. If you feel it would help, you could always have a quiet word with him and ask him if he realises that he is behaving this way, or ask a friend to speak to him if that would be better. It may be that he is just a naturally flirty person and just needs a gentle nudge in order to tone it down. But the main thing for you to do is not to let this guy play you and to find someone else who will make you happy. Good luck! J

Dear Duo I really don't know how to fix this so any help would be appreciated. My 33 yr old bf can be really childish, challenging, is a jealous (and often controlling) character and can really hold a grudge. But when you get past all that he's really a great person, he's just a bit insecure. He got me talking with a friend of his through facebook and unfortunately it was at a time when he and I were arguing a bit. The friend got in touch to ask how things were ect and I'd had a couple of glasses of wine and vented

a bit (I really regretted it afterwards) his friend was really understanding about it, said he'd had similar problems with him but that the best way to deal with it was just to sit quietly until he'd stopped shouting and he'd be calm, bark worse than bite ect. He said nothing nasty about my bf, just offered advice as he'd been on the end of his aggressive side too.

&

A few days later, my bf demanded to see the messages and said he didn't trust either of us anymore and that I'd ruined his friendship, I tried to explain that all his friend had done was defend him and offer advice but he wasn't happy. He's now refusing to speak to his friend who is really upset over the whole thing. I hadn't told him that my bf had read the messages until today and I don't know how he'll react. It's all so messed up. Today is my bf's birthday and he won't even respond to any messages. I've not seen or heard from him for nearly 2 weeks over a different fall out, if it's over between us then that's ok, I can accept it, will probably save me an ulcer in later life I'm sure, but I'd hate to think of him never speaking to his life long friend again over something that he's taken the wrong way. The friend did nothing wrong, it was my fault for using him as a shoulder to cry on.

I don't know how to fix this though?? Dana Hi Dana You didn't ruin the friendship. Your boyfriend (or ex) has ongoing temper issues and has probably lost friends and girlfriends before because of it. You say you'd be ok if it's over between you - don't let guilt about the lost friendship hold you back. You did nothing wrong either - and it sounds like it's not the first time he's fallen out with his mate, so they'll probably sort this out too. J

A quick guide to the movies on general release Battleship (12A)

Titanic 3D (12A)

Wrath of the Titans (12A)

Naval officer Lieutenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is stationed on the Hawaiian islands with his older brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgard), who captains the USS Sampson. Alex is assigned to the USS John Paul Jones, captained by Vice Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson), who just happens to be the disapproving father of his beautiful fiancee, Samantha (Brooklyn Decker). When an extra-terrestrial race lands out at sea, the USS John Paul Jones and USS Sampson are scrambled into action. Sassy weapons specialist Cora Raikes (Rihanna) and boatswain Ordy (Jesse Plemons) stand alongside Alex on their destroyer and together they attack the aliens, all guns blazing. Rating: ★★★

To coincide with the centenary of Titanic's ill-fated maiden voyage, James Cameron has revisited his masterpiece and lovingly converted it to 3D. The film begins deep underwater with Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) and his team of hi-tech treasure hunters scouring the submerged wreck. The search comes to nought until Brock meets 101-year-old survivor Rose DeWitt Bukater (Gloria Stuart). Staring transfixed at a sketch of her younger self, Rose recalls her burgeoning romance with spirited artist Jack Dawson (DiCaprio) aboard the eponymous luxury liner. Her jealous fiance Cal Hockley (Billy Zane) schemes to drive a wedge between the sweethearts with the help of his valet Spicer Lovejoy (David Warner) and Rose's snobbish, money-oriented mother (Frances Fisher). Fate intervenes and passengers of all classes fight for their lives as the ship quickly takes on freezing water. Rating: ★★★★★

Demi-god Perseus (Sam Worthington) returns to his fishing village with his young son, hoping to put his monster-slaying days behind him. Alas, war looms because the humans have neglected the gods, weakening brothers Zeus (Liam Neeson), Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). Consequently, the imprisoned Titans led by the gods' banished father Kronos are gaining in strength and will soon escape the cavernous dungeon prison of Tartarus. Zeus is betrayed by Hades and his godly son Ares (Edgar Ramirez), who have forged a pact with Kronos to retain their immortality once hell is unleashed upon the Earth. So Perseus answers the call to arms to rescue Zeus, slaying a menagerie of terrifying beasts with the help of feisty Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Poseidon's demigod offspring, Agenor (Toby Kebbell). Rating: ★★★

Jubilee Street Party at Chepstow Racecourse Parents looking for somewhere different to take the kids over the Jubilee weekend can head to Chepstow Racecourse, where Bank Holiday Monday promises to be a great family day out. On Monday 4th June the racecourse will host its very own British Street Party. As well as all the thrill of the racing there will be plenty of free kids entertainment including face painting, bouncy castles, inflatable football game, trampolines, a cup and saucer ride and chair o’ planes. There will also be music throughout the afternoon and with free admission for children under 16, it’s an affordable way to celebrate and do something a little out of the ordinary. Rebecca Joy, General Manager at Chepstow Racecourse said: “The Jubilee weekend is the perfect time for families to get together and be proud to be British. We wanted to make sure that people in

Chepstow have somewhere to go where there will be something for everyone to enjoy. The Queen herself is a big horseracing fan and owns racehorses so it’s a very appropriate way to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. Visitors can see the horses up close in the parade ring, spot top jockeys walking amongst the crowd in their brightly coloured silks, choose from a range of food and drink stalls and enjoy a wide range of children’s entertainment.” Gates open at 12.40pm with the first race at 2.40pm. Tickets are priced from £16, with free entry for children under 16. For more information visit www.chepstow-racecourse.co.uk.
