Is 2011 going to be the year of the hat? Judging by the plethora of Royal Weddings and extra racing fixtures that have been announced Get Ahead Hats will have another bumper year! Taking the Royals into context first, Get Ahead Hats has quite a head-start here (sorry about the pun) having supplied millinery for summer and winter, racing and wedding styles to Kate Middleton and her family for sometime. Remember the wedding pictures of William & Kate in the press after the

engagement announcement – guess who encouraged, advised and supplied it – our exceptional quality and superb range of hats backed up by experienced and knowledgeable milliners cannot be beaten. Petite does not mean unseen, smaller ‘Percher’ styles are all the rage for the coming season and work well with the longer hairstyles on the younger set and yet give height and elegance to Mother of the bride and the less outgoing among us. Let’s be honest about this, making an entrance anywhere can be daunting and getting it just right at your daughter’s wedding or attending husband’s corporate day at the races needs a lot of confidence and this is where the right hat can really make it on the day. A few points to think about when choosing a hat – ■ Always try a hat on with the outfit you intend to wear – there are 100’s of hats in each of Get Ahead’s showrooms ■ Try lots of styles and various colours, a different shade to the outfit may be look better ■ Always have the hat fitted – that means it should feel secure and you can forget about it! ■ It’s no longer imperative to match up hat, shoes and handbag although it sometimes can look great and can ‘dress up’ a plain outfit ■ See the hat and outfit from all angles, particularly from the back

Always wear heels the same height as you intend to wear on the day ■ Hire it/buy it or have one made – make your choice once you have decided on the style bearing in mind how many times you are likely to wear it and how good the colour match is. ■ Don’t forget that Get Ahead Hats can design and make to your requirements – the impossible we can often achieve quickly but miracles take a little longer! ■

On reflection 2011 IS going to be the year of the hat – our new season’s styles and fabrics will make it so!

UTOPIA by Vivien Sheriff A delicate black lace cap on a headband featuring a striking display of black and white wired feathered butterflies. Flamboyant designs centred around a cap or headband are one of this season’s hottest trends.

RICARDO ARRAY by Rachel Trevor Morgan Black and natural stripe modern sinamay percher style hat edged with feathers and trimmed with a centre bow. This style by milliner to the Queen Rachel Trevor Morgan is understated and sophisticated.

Elegant and timeless, with dramatic downturned sinamay trim, feathers and veiling, this hat can be made in a range of colours to match or contrast with your outfit. Exclusive to Get Ahead Hats.

Preparing for your perfect day The old song says love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage, but these days the sky’s the limit for weddings. Couples set out as husband and wife in limos, in helicopters, on speed boats, even in fire engines and on double-decker buses. Some even bungee jump into married life. Today the wedding of your dreams can be anything you want, but the majority still opt for tradition and style. Whatever your plans for your big day these pages will help in your search for local venues and general wedding requirements and services.

Looking Gorgeous On Your Wedding Day Your wedding day makeup is one of the most important parts of your bridal image. If using a make up artist - Schedule a trial well in advance. A good makeup artist will ask you to bring the photo of your wedding dress to get a sense of your style and would ask you for the swatches of your bridesmaids dresses, to get an idea about your color theme. A good professional will take your before and after photos for reference, and will draw your face chart. She will bring both to your wedding to replicate the look exactly.

Make sure your makeup looks light and natural. Bridal makeup should have a “classic” touch to it, so when you look at your photos 20 years from now, you would still admire the way you looked on your wedding day. Avoid “trendy” looks like “smoky eye” or green or blue eye shadows – they will look dated in a couple of years!

classic look and it photographs extremely well. As opposed to fake eyelashes, eyelash extensions look so natural, they are impossible to detect. They do not require an extra coating of mascara, and they do not require a heavy eyeliner – they emphasize your eyes enough to make you look gorgeous without looking fake.

If you decide to do your own makeup, make sure to have a private makeup lesson scheduled with a top makeup artist prior to the wedding. Have a lesson way in advance so you have time to practice, and bring your trusted Maid of Honor to the lesson so she would know what to do to assist you on your Big Day.

Use only Translucent powder on your wedding day to keep away shine and keep your makeup going. Why Translucent? Any other powder will keep darkening your face with each application. Have the powder in your bag along with a soft powder brush. Here is the list of makeup items you have to have handy on your wedding day to look gorgeous till the end of your wedding:

Heavy makeup will make you look not like a bride, but like a showgirl. You don’t want that to happen. Heavy foundation will start cracking in a couple of hours. Make sure your makeup artist uses only light and “breathable” kind of foundation, so you won’t even feel it on your face. Eyes look gorgeous when emphasized with eyelash extensions – this is a

The Royal Wedding The date has been set - Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton on Friday 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey, London. The ceremony will take place at 11am. The day has been declared a Royal Bank Holiday. Those who have never seen a British royal wedding are in for a treat. The service itself will be absolutely stunning and full of pomp and circumstance. An estimated 1 billion people worldwide are expected to tune in to the day’s events. 750 million sat fixated to their television sets to watch Prince William’s parents marry in 1981. Prince William and Catherine Middleton will marry at 11 a.m. BST. Royal watchers will be up and watching with coffee in hand. For those planning to watch the royal wedding when it’s broadcast on April 29, keep in mind the time differences around the globe and plan accordingly so nothing is missed.

What to Expect on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Wedding Day: ● Catherine’s bridesmaids (her sister Pippa Middleton among them) and pages will leave Clarence House approximately half an hour before the ceremony. The Queen and Royal Family members will leave Buckingham Palace and make their way to the church shortly thereafter. ● Prince William and his supporters - which will likely include his brother Prince Harry - will then leave St. James Palace.

Catherine and her father, Mike Middleton, will leave Buckingham Palace shortly thereafter. They will travel to Westminster Abbey by car. ●

The bride traditionally arrives in a horse-drawn glass carriage -- a real Cinderella moment. The royal couple will exchange vows at Westminster Abbey as the Royal Family looks on from the righthand side of the church with Prince William’s guests.

● Clarence House tweeted that three senior clergymen will conduct the ceremony: the Archbishop of Canterbury will marry the couple; the Dean of Westminster will conduct the service, and the Bishop of London will give the address.

Following their nuptials, Prince William and his new bride will take a horse-drawn carriage back to Buckingham Palace. The royal party will follow them. According to Clarence House they will pass The Mall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall, and Parliament Square. The streets will be packed with British flag-waving well-wishers and tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds. ●

Flowers complete a wedding occasion Set a meeting with a florist of your choice and prior to the appointment date, make sure that you have prepared some necessary details to facilitate you in your inquiries -- your wedding colors, the number of your attendants and of course your budget for the flowers.

Flowers are an indispensable part of the wedding, it follows that flowers be included in the wedding budget and preparation. Some couple with the help of family members or friends decide on arranging the flowers by themselves but as there are other things to be done for a wedding, it would be a smarter choice to simply hire a florist to take the job of floral necessities and arrangements for the big day.

There are seasonal flowers which you may want to choose for their availability, durability and less cost. ●

For Spring, flowers in season are apple and cherry blossoms, daffodils, hyacinth, iris, lilies, lilacs, pansies, peonies and tulips. Summer blooms are calla lilies, dahlia, daisies, geraniums, hydrangeas, iris, larkspur,

Queen Anne’s lace, roses, sunflowers and zinnias. Flowers readily available during fall season are asters, chrysanthemums, gerbera daisies, marigolds, roses and sunflowers. Winter flowers are camellias, forget-me-nots, jasmine, orchids and poinsettias. Flowers which are available all year round are tuberoses, stephanotis, snapdragon, September aster, roses, protea, lilies, iris, gladiolus, Gerber daisy, gardenia, freesia, orchid, daisy, chrysanthemum, cattleman, carnation and baby’s breath.

If cost of flowers is a big concern, one useful tip is to use locally grown blooms. Flowers which are imported normally cost high as there would be fees for importation, shipping, storage and other necessary stuffs to transport the flowers to different locations and have to remain fresh and not tattered.

You may also want to consider the price of these flowers in order to make for a workable budget. Expensive flowers include lily-ofthe-valley, orchids, peonies, magnolia, gardenia and hydrangea. Less costly selection of flowers are lavender, roses, daisies and carnations.

Flowers beautify a wedding ceremony as well as the wedding reception. Whether it is a simple wedding or a grand and fabulous nuptial, there would surely be flowers such as in the bridal bouquet, corsages, boutonnieres, centerpieces and confetti.

Wedding plan guide Planning is the key to success for a smooth wedding. Planning can’t start too early! Here is a wedding planning list to get you started on your wedding plan: 1. The Budget You need to establish early on what your wedding budget is. Will either set of parent be contributing financially to the wedding? Ideas of roughly how many guests will be attending need to be considered at this early stage, as the size of the event will have a big impact on the cost. Formal Menswear Established in 1973

2. The Ceremony As soon as you know what date you are aiming for, you should find out about the venue and personnel for the ceremony. For a church wedding in particular you should discuss your wedding with the priest or vicar as soon as possible. Even civil ceremony venues can have long waiting lists. 3. Wedding Insurance This is worth considering,

EXTONS of RAGLAN & USK

especially if you are planning a particularly expensive wedding. In the unfortunate event that you had to postpone, you could end up paying for everything twice! Wedding insurance can remove that worry. 4. Wedding Reception Planning Spend some time beforehand jotting down your requirements and priorities, then visit a number of venues before you make your final choice. 5. Flowers These will need to be booked well in advance, especially if you are planning a wedding on a budget and wish to shop around and perhaps do some of the flower arranging yourself. 6. Wedding Music You may wish to select music for both the ceremony venue and the reception venue. Many people hire a live band for the latter. 7. Photography If you are planning a wedding on a budget you may wish to consider asking around for friends of friends who do wedding photography. 8. Invitations Allow extra time depending on how nicely you want to personalize them. Hand written calligraphy invitations are beautiful, if time consuming, so if you have a friend or relative willing to volunteer you should jump at the offer! 9. Wedding Dress As well as the Groom’s outfits, bridesmaids, plus ushers or pageboys if you will have them.

10. Wedding Cake Again, book well in advance or if you are lucky enough to have one of the mothers cooking it for you make sure that you discuss the size and decoration early on. 11. Rings Again, you may be surprised at the time it takes to both decide on the

rings and potentially have them ordered in the right sizes. Visit a jewelers early on in the planning. 12. Wedding Gift List Give some thought as to whether you are going to have a traditional wedding gift list, or something more modern like a note to the effect that “We want your presence not your presents," as some couples do these days. 13. Transport Not only from the church to the reception venue, but also transport arrangements for guests - and very importantly your travel plans for the honeymoon! The importance of planning ahead for your wedding can’t be over-emphasized. The best wedding planning tip is simply: Be Organized!

Transport for the big day It is a good idea to bear in mind the distance to the venue from your home when deciding which form of transport to use. THERE'S nothing quite like stepping out of a gleaming Rolls Royce or Bentley to create an impression on your arrival at church, but a vintage car or horse carriage will also create a stir.

It's usual to have two cars - one for you and your father and one for your mum and bridesmaids but one may be enough for a smaller wedding.

If you are having your wedding and reception at the same venue you may not need cars at all - one area where savings can be made. Remember it is the best man’s responsibility for getting himself and the groom to the

Book early especially if you are getting hitched in the summer months.

ceremony on time and is probably, together with looking after the rings, his most important duty. They should arrive approximately half an hour before the bride and bridesmaids. They would normally arrive in the best man’s car, the groom’s own car or by taxi. Unless you are having a Civil Ceremony and are marrying in the same place as your reception, you will need your transport to take you both to the reception and a second vehicle for your bridesmaids. It is not uncommon for the bride’s mother/parents to accompany the bridesmaids.

photography A wedding is a once in a lifetime event, the next chapter in your journey. When you’re planning your wedding, your philosophy on wedding photography and your choice of wedding photographer is arguably the most critical decision you will make throughout the entire wedding planning process. You may have spent many years or months imagining your perfect day from how you will feel; The anticipation of getting ready, the walk down the aisle, the moment you say I do, to the finer details; What sort of wedding will it be? A spring wedding full of fresh blooms or the warmth of a Summer wedding, maybe a crisp Autumn, or a Winter wedding with all that sparkles. Whichever it is, your wedding will be unique to you and we believe this is the way your photography should be.

After all, what other part of your wedding will still be around 30 years from now, in the form of formal wedding portraits hanging in your home and in your wedding album, which will be looked through by visitors to your home for years to come! These are the pictures that will show your future children what your wedding day was like, you definitely want to choose a wedding photographer that is talented, professional, and employs a style and aesthetic that is compatible with your personality as a couple. I will make it my business to get to know you; whether you are you openly romantic or more reserved, fun loving or looking for something a little more edgy. Whatever your personality type, I will look to photograph your wedding to suit your personalities, and not how a photographer would like your day represented.

Of course I will offer advice and guidance, after all photographing weddings is what I do and having been privileged to share in many weddings and ceremonies over the years, I certainly have a lot of experience to share! Beginning with our initial discussion deciding how you would like the day to run, I strive to be as accommodating as possible. I will speak with you before and after your big day, to ensure that you are kept well informed of what to expect from me. On the day, you will have my undivided attention, enabling me to get a thorough coverage of the day - from the magical moments as the bride prepares, to the vibrancy and excitement of the event itself. I aim to offer you variety and tailor my services to suit your personal preferences.

A Brief Guide to the Etiquette and Tradition of Wedding Day Speeches The order of speeches is traditionally as follows:

The groom speaks next - and replies on behalf of himself and his wife [in these modern times it should be remembered that more and more brides are making their own speeches*]. He aims to thank those people involved in helping them both in the planning of the wedding and distributes gifts to those who are to receive more than a verbal “thank you." The groom then may talk about his new wife before proposing a toast to the bridesmaids

The best man’s speech now follows - He thanks the bride and bridegroom on behalf of the bridesmaids and himself for asking them to be part of their special day and for the gifts they have received and then he reads out telegrams, cards, emails or other messages from friends and relatives who couldn’t be at the wedding. He will then go on to talk about the groom in what can be the highlight, or in some cases lowlight, of the wedding speeches. Humour and anecdote abound. Finally the best man should then propose a toast to the parents of the bride and bridegroom.

*If the bride is to make a speech it should take place following the groom’s. It may seem obvious, but joint speeches should be co-ordinated well beforehand since both will probably wish to say much the same thing.

A modern trend is also for the maid-of honor to make a speech.

The father of the bride - usually talks fondly about his daughter. As with most speeches, it is accepted that a mixture of affectionate anecdote and humour generally works well. He then toasts the bride and groom.

Best Wedding Movies Top 10 Movie Romances and Comedies Runaway Bride – Julia Roberts stars in this romantic comedy. Her character is so afraid of commitment, she keeps leaving her groom(s) at the altar. Costar Richard Gere plays the man who finally marries her. Naturally – because who in her right mind could turn Richard Gere away? In real life, Julia Roberts is now married to cameraman Daniel Moder. Her previous marriage was to Lyle Lovett; director Garry Marshall gave her away during that wedding. The Marrying Man – Neil Simon wrote this screenplay and Alec Baldwin starred as the man who married the same woman four times. Kim Basinger plays a sultry lounge singer who is a mobster’s girlfriend, which prevents her from marrying the man she really loves. In real life, Alec and Kim fell in love on the set of this movie and married, but later divorced in 2002. This is one of the best wedding movies of all time because of the romance both on and off the set. The Wedding Singer – Adam Sandler stars in this movie about a wedding singer who was jilted at the altar, and who becomes the world’s worst wedding singer. Drew Barrymore is Sandler’s costar. In real life, Barrymore married bartender Jerry Thomas when she was 19. She later married Canadian Tom Green. This is an edgy addition to this list of the best wedding movies of all time – and it’ll definitely help you destress while achieving your wedding goals! The Wedding Planner – Jennifer Lopez plays a wedding planner who falls in love with the fiancé of her client. Matthew McConaughey costars in this romantic comedy. In real life, Lopez was married twice before she married Ben Affleck. Now she’s with someone new – but I can’t keep up! McConaughey has never married. I wouldn’t have chosen The Wedding Planner as one of the best romantic comedies or wedding movies of all time, but you can’t argue with Access Hollywood. And, I do admit that The Wedding Planner will help you destress while planning your wedding. Muriel’s Wedding – Australian actress Toni Collette stars in this Cinderella story about a dream come true. It’s not just a romantic comedy because it deals with suicide, cancer, and following your heart. Even though it doesn’t feature major movie stars, it is definitely one of the sweetest, most touching romantic Hollywood films – which makes it one of the

best wedding movies of all time. Father of the Bride – Steve Martin and Diane Keaton star in this romantic comedy, which is a remake of the original Father of the Bride staring Spencer Tracy. Martin Short is the wedding planner in the movie, and he steals the show. Kimberly Williams played the bride-to-be in Father of the Bride. This is a wedding movie that focuses more on the parents of the bride than the bride herself….making it a great choice for the parents of the happy couple! My Big Fat Greek Wedding – Based on the real life experiences of Nia Vardalos, a Greek Winnipegbased actress, this romantic comedy was originally a onewoman play. Tom Hanks’ wife Rita convinced Hanks to make the movie; he had to convince Vardalos to put more kissing and make out scenes in the movie. It’s definitely one of the funniest, most culturally focused of these wedding movies. My Best Friend’s Wedding – Another Julia Roberts movie; she costarred with Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney. Roberts is determined to put a stop to her best friend’s wedding (Mulroney is marrying Diaz in the movie). In an interview about this movie, Roberts said a wedding should be “a party to say we all believe in this love.” Director P.J. Hogan said this movie has a Shakespearian feel.

star in this movie, which was Hoffman’s third film. He made it when he was a struggling actor. A classic scene was when Hoffman’s character stopped Bancroft’s daughter’s wedding – a scene that has been spoofed in Wayne’s World and The Simpsons. Four Weddings and a Funeral – Starring Hugh Grant and Andie Macdowell, this is one of the highest grossing British romantic comedies in their history. Four Weddings made Hugh Grant a star overnight. Andie Macdowell stepped into the role just two weeks before filming, after original actress dropped out. Four Weddings is one of Julia Roberts’ favorite movies. According to Access Hollywood, this is number one on their list of the best wedding movies of all time.

The Reception Venue... IF you’re getting married in a venue licensed for weddings, then the ceremony and reception could be held at the same location - problem solved.

Ring around for quotations, compare rates and visit a number of the places that appeal. Finally, don’t forget to book early.

However, if you’re tying the knot in a church or registry office, ideally you’ll need to find somewhere reasonably close by. If you’re looking to save money, consider a place where you can bring in your own caterers and drink.

Once you have decided on the type of wedding you would like, one very important factor is what type of reception to have. Some choose the hotel function room, others choose a marquee, some decide to rent the local village hall.

Thorough research is the key to success, so ask around for personal recommendations, look in books and magazines, scour wedding websites to get ideas for your own individual taste.

Whichever you decide, take into account your budget, the number of guests, location (not too far from the ceremony), informal or formal, sit down or buffet.

■ Book well in advance to avoid

disappointment. ■ Most receptions begin with an aperitif either champagne, sherry, or fruit for the non-drinkers ■ A formal wedding has a ‘line up’, usually the bride’s parents, the bridegroom’s parents, the bride and groom, bridesmaids, ushers and the best man to greet their guests. A traditional table plan for your reception would normally be as follows: ● Chief Bridesmaid ● Groom’s Father ● Bride’s Mother § Groom ● Bride ● Bride’s Father ● Groom’s Mother ● Best Man Table decorations can consist of flowers, balloons, streamers, ribbons, candles etc. Try and colour co-ordinate your tables for added flair. One very nice idea is to have disposable cameras for your guests, so they can capture that special moment.

Catering... Catering will account for a big slice of your budget so careful planning is essential. Firstly, you'll need to decide whether you want a formal sit down meal or a buffet. A sit down meal requires you to work out a seating plan, but guests often find their own places with a buffet. Itemise any special requirements that you or your guests may have, such as vegetarian, vegan or kosher diets, then take your specifications to a number of suppliers and compare menus and quotes. You may be offered the opportunity to taste a selection of dishes, which will give you an idea of the quality available. If you've opted for a buffet, don't forget to err on the side of generosity to make sure there's plenty for everyone. Don’t forget that an experienced caterer can also give you ideas with your reception budget and help you with the seating plan so the ‘traffic’ moves smoothly in the venue you have chosen. You should start interviewing caterers 7-12 months in advance of your wedding. Your wedding will not be complete without the cake! The number of guests will help determine the size of cake required, although you may have already made up your mind exactly what you want. You may want a traditional tiered cake with flowers to match your bouquet or you may have a particular passion for something that can be created, whatever, a good cake designer can be very artistic and should listen to your individual requirements. Ask to see photographs of the cakes they have designed, so you can check out the quality, their creativity and get ideas. Do remember that the cake should have a table of its own so that people and the photographer can get a good view of you cutting the cake.

Outside Catering: Delicious Finger Buffets for Birthdays, Christenings, Weddings, Funerals, Children’s Parties or business lunches. Whatever the Occasion we can put together a tasty selection of Sandwiches, Savouries, Fruits and confectionary to your specification. No matter how large or small the order, buffets start at just £3.75 per head. For more information pop into the bakery or call -

With this ring... The wearing of bridal wedding rings is a tradition that spans back centuries, and in modern times the choice of bands is greater than ever. Demand for more elaborate, exciting and unique wedding rings have brought about a plethora of different styles onto the market, and deciding which one to choose can prove tricky. Bridal wedding rings are stylish pieces of female jewellery that symbolise marriage and reflect the wearer’s personality. They should be practical, fit in with lifestyle, and be comfortable at the same time. But unlike the male wedding ring, where the gents have a totally free choice, there is one thing that will dictate the shape and style of the wedding ring more than any other factor - the engagement ring. On a ladies ring finger the engagement ring should be the real star of the show with the wedding ring complimenting and showcasing it to the best of its

ability. This is not to say that bridal wedding rings need be dull, but simply that they should work with the engagement ring, not against it. The two rings should look and feel like they were destined to be together and it is essential that you choose your wedding ring with this in mind.

allow the wedding ring and the engagement ring to sit together perfectly. The best way to determine what you’ll need is to take a closer look at your engagement ring. Try laying it on a table, does it lay flat? If it does, you’re OK to opt for a straight edged band. If not, you may still be able to, but you’ll need to look even closer to determine what is causing the ring to not lay flat.

In order to choose a wedding ring which engances the appearance of an engagement ring, rather than overshadowing it, there are three elements that every bride-to-be should consider very closely - the band shape, band style and band width. Let’s look at each one in turn.

In the majority of circumstances this will be the gemstone, so you should assess whether the stone is raised sufficiently to allow a further ring to sit under it, but not be impeded. If you are in any doubt, ask a jeweller they will be more than happy to advise, or try on a range of bridal wedding rings with differing bands to see for yourself.

Bridal Wedding Ring Shape The first factor to consider is whether you can opt for a straight edged wedding ring, or if you need to incorporate a unique shape to

The idea of Tonica is that you lose your weight swiftly and safely with the minimum of discomfort. Each cake is substantial and will fill you up for up to four hours - and yet contains no more than 180 calories. The cakes also provide lots of steady energy and help prevent cravings. They are densely absorbent and can carry excess fats and calories out of your body before they can convert to stored fat. And, because they keep your digestive system working properly, you tend not to “plateau” - nor do you start piling the weight back on when you come off the diet. In fact, Tonica provide a very satisfactory maintenance plan which will help you to keep those lost pounds off forever. The cakes come in an assortment of 6 delicious flavours and are available in 14 day or 28 day packs - and, while stocks last, Tonica offers and extra two days free cakes with each 14 day pack and four extra days with each 28 day pack. For most, the choice will be one of three - high domed, flat and softly rounded. To help determine which is the one for you, again lay your engagement ring on its side and, focussing on the band, assess what it looks like: A ‘C’ shape indicates a ‘high domed’ ring A ‘)‘ shape indicates a ‘flat’ ring A ‘[‘ shape indicates a ‘softly rounded’ ring Whatever wedding ring you choose, make sure that you stamp your style on it, but never lose sight of the fact that the engagement ring at any time.

Bridal Wedding Ring Style When it comes to the style of bridal wedding rings, in order to achieve a ‘perfect set’ you should look to choose a band style identical to that of your engagement ring. This is not to say that claddagh, puzzle or other ornate bands won’t work, merely that choosing a similarly styled band will help to emphasise and enhance the togetherness‚ of the rings.
