F A C T O R Y O U T L E T

When the clock chines midnight we declare war on our vices, peace with our neighbours, and ride the euphoric wave of resolution which will transform us into better and more disciplined creatures. Of course, making these fine and noble resolutions is one thing, sticking to them is an altogether different kettle of fish. As Mark Twain once said snapped, “New Year’s Day… now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.” So with that in mind, why not crack open a bottle of something nice, tuck into something tasty, and feast your eyes on this month’s G&D. The gym isn’t going anywhere fast, and by the looks of it dear, neither are you. But so what! There’s 365 days in the year and tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life. But whatever you do and wherever you do it, just remember to be good!

T’S a new year, a new beginning, and a fresh start. So throwaway the badly-stained onesey, ditch the stale old duvet, recycle the empty wine bottles, junk the junk food and start over. It’s a new dawn, a new day, and 2018 is just beginning. So grab it by the horns, bend it to your will, and ride it ragged. Just don’t be surprised when it tosses you like a rag doll and leaves you discarded, disheveled, bruised and sullied in some god forsaken gutter or other. But hey ho! That’s life. And new years are all about life. In general we’re a pessimistic bunch at the G&D and have a tendency to stay up until midnight on December 31 with our fizzy wine and pot noodles, not so much to see the new year, in but to make sure the old one leaves. And when it does you’ll find us howling at the moon and frothing at the mouth with all the giddy excitement of that which is newly born and pregnant with promise.

Have a very Happy New Year everyone.

Make the switch and enjoy Veganuary

A

S the new year starts and people embark on their resolutions, give a thought to trying vegan for the month and join the Veganuary revolution. Veganism has grown in popularity in the last ten years as more people decide not to eat any products from animals, however, the origins go back much further. The word and the practice of being ‘vegan’ was named by Donald Watson, an animal rights advocate, who also cofounded the Vegan Society in 1944. With many people making the switch or deciding to go vegan for January, Simon Bandy, General Manager of Veganicity, says, “People often worry about what they would eat if they became vegan and where they would get their sources of protein from. The good news

is that 73 years on, vegans are now well catered for and labelling in shops and supermarkets makes it easier than ever to make educated choices.” Here are some quick tips for anyone thinking of switching to a vegan diet: Multi Vitamin & MineralSubstitute Most foods can be substituted with a plant-based alternative, and now these are more readily available than ever. From olive pate to almond milk, tofu and vegetables are no longer the only options for vegans. There are so many good alternatives in the shops there will be a plethora of choice when going vegan for the 30 days.

While finding your feet try Veganicity’s comprehensive Multi Vitamin & Mineral (60 tabs/£7.75). Plan Any diet or lifestyle choice can fall at the first hurdle if it isn’t well planned in advance. Stock up with snacks like nuts, houmous and carrot sticks. And remember, although high in saturated fat, chips are still vegan if cooked in vegetable oil or similar! Calcium ExtraNutrition One of the best things about turning vegan is that people instantly up their

daily intake of vegetables, grains and fruits. However, vegans can sometimes be low or deficient in calcium, iron and vitamin B12. Try Veganicity Calcium Extra (30 tabs/£2.95), Chelated Iron (90 tabs/£5.45) or B12 1000mcg (90 tabs/£7.95).

Simon concluded, “There is a wealth of information on the internet that can help people with their journey. Remember being vegan is becoming more mainstream with in good company with celebrities like Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lopez and Ellen DeGeneres making it their way of life too.”

Recycling - if in doubt throw it out

F in doubt, throw it out when recycling at home says the UK recycling industry. The Recycling Association is providing this simple advice because the public are often unsure whether household items are recyclable or not. Packaging is becoming increasingly complex, while local authorities can have completely different collection schemes compared to neighbouring ones adding to the confusion. But The Recycling Association is saying that you should always recycle clean, single material plastics, paper, metal cans and glass in your recycling bin. If an item of packaging is made of multiple materials and you aren't sure whether it can be recycled or not, it is better to put it into your general waste bin than your recycling bin. This is because almost one fifth of the material collected for recycling from households is material that cannot currently be recycled. The Recycling Association chief executive Simon Ellin said: "We have thought for a while that the public are increasingly confused when looking at packaging items whether they can be recycled or not. This has been backed up by a survey undertaken by The Recycling Association that found that the public know you can recycle the simplest household items, but get confused when the products are more complex. Members of the public were questioned by The Recycling Association over whether they would recycle common household packaging in their recycling bin at home or not, or whether they were unsure. The results were:100% of respondents said they would recycle a baked bean can after the beans had been eaten. A total of 42% said they recycled a black meat tray with a clear plastic film covering, 44% did not, while 14% were unsure People were more confident about recycling a spray detergent bottle, with 89% saying they put it in their recycling at home, only 9% did not, and just 3% were unsure When it came to a paper envelope with a plastic window for the address, 75% of people would put these in the recycling bin, 21% would not and 4% were unsure. Simon Ellin added: "For a while now, The Recycling Association has been campaigning for more responsibility throughout the supply chain to make recycling easier for the public to do. All too often, the packaging designers, manufacturers and retailers leave it to local authorities and the recycling sector to sort this out. But unless the public are given packaging items that are easy to understand, inevitably items that shouldn't be included for recycling end up in the recycling bin. "Our survey backs up our view that many common household items are confusing the public when it comes to knowing whether they can be recycled or not. People generally get that you can recycle a can, a plastic bottle or a cardboard box. But when it comes to more complex multi-material packaging and products, people become less sure. "We would also like to see more consistency in local authority collections too. For example, some local authorities collect black plastic meat trays and some don't, even though this is currently a challenging material to recycle."

From Boston to Barmoth with Nigel Heath

W

E'RE on the road again," I said to my walking friend Peter as we stood with our backs to Boston's famous 'Stump' church tower early on a chilly November morning. Ahead lay four wonderful days walking to escape the vast flatness of the Lincolnshire fens and on to higher ground as we headed for Margaret Thatcher's home town of Grantham and beyond. Four further weeks walking in January, March, April and June would take us through winter and out in to spring and summer and so on to the North Wales resort of Barmouth on the Irish Sea. We were starting a new 280 miles cross-Britain trail created by The Macmillan Way Association as a sequel to their now extremely popular Boston to Abbotsbury in Dorset long distance trek. "I wonder what small adventures we'll have along the way,?" I remarked as we hoisted out packs onto our backs, took up our walking poles and set forth, soon to pass a cluster of fishing boats on the banks of the River Within estuary. They were the final echo of the 13th century when Boston rivalled London for trade with Northern Europe. And strangely enough it was beyond Kirton, with its eye catching metal village sign, that we stopped in a cafe and met a local, now living in The Netherlands, who said how lucky we were to have the legal right to roam. We decided on lunch in the oddly named village of Wigtoft where our trusty Ordnance Survey map told us there was a pub, but it was nowhere to be found. Then, as if on cue, a council lorry driver arrived to empty the bins and told us the pub had closed some time ago so it was on to our often used plan B and sandwiches in the nearby parish church porch. "There are tables inside," invited a lady who 'd popped in to borrow the church wheelchair. We got chatting about the state of the world and she told us the silver lining story of how her ambulance driver son had thrice resuscitated a badly injured tourist on the way to hospital after the London tube bombings and had later attend her wedding in Australia. It was time to go and on leaving this quiet village we crossed the noisy A16 Boston to Spalding road and were soon on a quiet lane in the midst of a dead flat landscape sewn with vast swathes of cabbages and brussels sprouts for as far as the eye could see. All were destined for our ravenously hungry supermarkets so would they all have to be cut by hand come Christmas and if so would our leaving Europe have an adverse affect on their cropping? I wondered. Further on we spotted a tiny 'Cross Britain Way 'stickers, many hundreds more of which, would help guide us safely onwards..Storm clouds were gathering as we plodded into Donington to meet Mathew Flinders holding his telescope with his faithful cat

Trim at his feet and standing quietly in the market square. This famous explorer was the first to circumnavigate Australia, charting and naming most of the southern coast, including Cape Donnington, and there are more statues of him 'down under' than any other historic figure, with the exception of Queen Victoria. The heavens were about to open so we took refuge in the Black Bull where we were welcomed by a roaring log fire and a friendly crowd of locals. This was just perfect because our B&B was close by and the pub served evening meals. Early the next morning we were back on the trail and again surrounded by vast arrays of crops as we followed a small lane which our Cross Britain Way guide book told us would eventually end at the South Forty Foot Drain But because we were chatting and I was not paying attention to the map, we went straight ahead on a sharp bend and ended up in a deserted farmyard with no sign of the drain which was a substantial waterway helping to drain the fens. It took a few minutes to figure out where we'd gone wrong and to return to the lane which infact continued for another two miles. It was a sharp reminder that paying attention was preferable to many a wasted step. The way now led across more vast tracks of open land, through the picturesque villages of Horbling and Billingborough but the ground was rising as we trudged up the long hill to journey's end in Folkingham The spreading rays of sunset turned the church clock face to gold as we found our way to our B&B in a magnificently converted barn and as luck would have it, there was a village pub serving supper. The following day with the fens now far behind us, we found our way along quiet lanes and country paths, through Sapperton, where we sat for coffee in the churchyard, and Ropsley and finally on to Old Somerby where we left the trail to walk into busy Grantham for the night. By a stroke of luck our hotel was opposite the Grantham Canal along which we walked for five miles the following morning to rejoin the trail at Woolsthorpe Wharf Here we met Grantham Canal Society members George Gee, 82, Alan Brown, 68, and supermarket employee Gemma Batalla 34 from Barcelona about to spend the day clearing weed. Journeys end was now in sight and after passing through Woolsthorpe by Belvoir and close by magnificent Belvoir Castle, now a conference and weddings venue, we left the trail to walk into nearby Redmile where we'd arranged for a taxi to take us the 60 miles back to Boston. Hopefully we'd be back in January for more small adventures on this wonderful new Cross Britain Walk. NIGEL’S FACTFILE The Cross Britain Way guide book, published by the Macmillan Ways Association, plus the relevant ordnance survey maps are essential for this walk. All our accommodation was of an excellent standard so necessary after hard days on the trail We stayed at The White Hart Hotel, Boston, Lincs, PE21 8SH; 01205-311900; Browntoft House, Donington, Spalding PE11 4TQ. 01775-822091 The Barn, Spring Lane, Folkingham, NG34 0SJ. 01529-497199. Pupils performed Christmas carol roadshow through Brecon as ‘Dementia Friends’

PUPILS from Christ College’s junior school, St Nicholas House, helped bring festive spirit to elderly people in the town of Breconjust before Christmas as part of a community initiative to support people with dementia. Thirty-eight pupils, aged seven to eleven, from St Nicholas House, have sung at local residential homes and hospices since the junior section opened in 2014. And this year, the young singers performed at six venues in just one day, as part of their annual Christmas carol roadshow. Julie Lewis, Head of Juniors at Christ College, said: “We are always keen to visit the elderly and sing carols in their residential homes at Christmas time. It has become a tradition, just like eagerly discovering and learning the new John Lewis Christmas ad song. “Visiting all six venues this year was a real challenge, but after learning how to help to create dementia friendly communities, we were more motivated than ever.” In September, St Nicholas House organised for pupils, parents and members of staff to support the Alzheimer’s Society

by becoming Dementia Friends. A one-hour information session was delivered by trained volunteer and local Dementia Friends Champion Joan Brown. Julie explained: “We have always had a great affinity with the elderly, and the work we did with Dementia Friends this year has been a fantastic driving force in the preparation of our carol roadshow. “Following the session with Joan, we set up an inter-generational project for our Year-6 pupils which consisted of visiting a local elderly residential home on a weekly basis, to undertake craft activities with several of the residents, many of whom live with dementia. “We have loved these sessions and the children really enjoy going. The benefits to both resident and pupil is huge.”

The very best start for girls and boys

R

EFINED over 400 years in the heart of the naturally inspirational Wye Valley, the Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools educate girls and boys aged three to 18 through a unique combination of single-sex and co-educational environments at the optimum stages of their academic and personal development. Parents seek the best allround education for their children; they want to feel confident that their sons and daughters are developing to the full their academic talent, self-confidence and social awareness. In the Monmouth Model, pupils embark on an educational journey within a distinctive community, starting at Monmouth Schools Pre-Prep and Nursery for 3-7 year olds. Based at Agincourt, a delightful old rectory set in picturesque grounds, the school offers a creative curriculum, providing a strong foundation in the core skills of literacy and numeracy, to-

gether with research and problem-solving skills. The magic of inspiring young minds is at the heart of all that is done at the school which has recently seen five-year-olds launch a campaign to save a mythical oak tree under threat, complete with media coverage, placards and banners. Whether it be a huge nest or a giant egg appearing on the roof overnight, an enchanted forest suddenly springing into growth or a huge purple submarine coming into dock, the ability to suspend belief adds an extra dimension to life at Agincourt. Enrichment activities using the extensive grounds and all the facilities of the Monmouth family of schools give each child the chance to flourish and shine. The playground, field, outdoor classroom and Forest School areas allow the children to work together on a larger scale, explore the world at first hand and experience changing natural phenomena. This co-educational foundation is the positive bedrock for future learning and children can move confidently on to Monmouth School Girls’ Prep and Boys’ Prep. Welsh accent sends hearts flying for airline passengers

T

HE Welsh accent has been voted the fourth most sexy when it comes to UK pilots (10 per cent), according to a survey by online flight booking site, Kiwi.com. The survey went on to find that the Scottish accent has been voted the sexiest amongst UK pilots, with almost a quarter (23 per cent) of Brits finding pilots more attractive if from the UK's northernmost country. It's take-off turnoff for frequent flyers when pilots with Brummie accents are onboard, so the likes of Ozzy Osborne, Lenny Henry and Richard Hammond might not want to consider a career change. Brits find the West Midlands accent the least sexy of all regional accents survey in the UK and Ireland. The earplugs also go in if the pilot's from the West Country, with the regional accent the second least sexy accent (2 per cent). For nervous flyers, pilots speaking the Queen's English (Received Pronunciation) are most reassuring to them, with just under half (49 per cent) of travellers admitting the tones of Patrick Stewart and Michelle Dockery gives them confidence during the flight. Scouse certainly does not settle the nerves, with the lowest ranking amongst all accents survey. Only one in a hundred (1 per cent) Brits admit that when they hear the accent, they feel reassured. With the voices of Gerard Butler, Sean Connery and Nicola Sturgeon instilling confidence in passengers, the Scottish accent trumped the subtle Northern Irish tones of Liam Neeson (19 per cent) and Irish vocals of Colin Farrell (19per cent ). Airlines need more female pilots to take to the skies according to Brits, with almost nine in ten (85 per cent ) frequent flyers admitting to feeling more confident and reassured when a female pilot is in the cockpit compared to their male counterparts (15 per cent ). Stephen Davis at Kiwi.com said: "Frequent flyers become somewhat lustful when Welsh pilots are on board, but feel safe and reassured when travelling. Forget the Rescue Remedy, all you need is a bit of Queen's English to settle the nerves. Speaking about the call for more female pilots, Davis continued: "female pilots continue to challenge gender stereotypes in such a male dominated industry and suggestion that there should be more women in the cockpit, as they are far more reassuring and instil confidence in passengers, should be taken into account."

HE Office for National Statistics has reported 1,800 winter deaths amongst the over 65s in Wales for 2016/17, which Age Cymru says is far too many given that these deaths are largely preventable. Age Cymru’s deputy chief executive Victoria Lloyd said,“While any excess winter deaths are regrettable, it is hugely frustrating that nearly 2,000 older people in Wales are dying in winter from largely preventable diseases. For example, many of the respiratory diseases can be cured by enabling people to live in warm, insulated homes that are free from damp and drafty conditions. While more effective financial support and advice would help more older people to heat their homes during winter.” The charity says it is scant consolation that Wales is performing better than the English regions in terms of winter death rates. (Wales’ Excess Winter Mortality index rate was calculated as 17.6% whereas the figure for England and Wales was 20.9%)

One third of the deaths were caused by respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, flu, asthma, and chest infections, while other causes are related to circulatory diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. The charity was also concerned by the wide variation in mortality rates within Wales. Conwy recorded the highest EWM index in Wales with 28.3%, while Powys recorded the lowest with 6.5%. Victoria Lloyd added, “Health and social services in Wales need to work together to ensure older people have access to community hubs where they can get the information and support needed to maintain their health and well-being.” “We would also urge older people to do what they can to remain healthy during the winter, particularly in opting to have a flu jab which is free to everyone aged 65 and over. If anyone needs advice and support about staying healthy in winter can call our free advice line on 08000 223 444.”

OAD SAFETY AND breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging motorists to take extra care when driving in winter weather. Road journeys are more difficult and treacherous when there is a fall of snow. GEM is encouraging drivers to make good use of some simple safety tips in order to reduce the chance of risk, delay and difficulty – and to avoid putting additional strain on the emergency services and breakdown providers who are likely to be at full stretch in winter weather.

Don’t drive if you don’t really need to. The easiest way to avoid trouble from winter conditions is not to venture out in the car. If you do have to make a road journey, then please ensure your car is properly equipped for the likely conditions. That’s because if you do experience a breakdown,

you will most likely have to wait longer until help arrives. If bad weather threatens, or has already arrived, then postpone your journey and eliminate the risk of be-

coming stuck somewhere. Listen for weather updates, and plan your travel accordingly. Prepare a set of essential items, in-

cluding shovel, fully charged mobile phone, torch, ice scraper, food, water, jump leads, first aid kit, warm clothes and a supply of sand or gravel to assist with grip if your wheels are spinning. Keep your speeds down, leave plenty of space between yourself and the vehicle in front, give room to snowploughs and gritter trucks, and be ready for sudden, rapid deteriorations in conditions. Remember that driving in winter conditions can be hard work, so ensure you build in breaks on your journeys. Take a look at the GEM e-Book on winter driving. It’s available for download free of charge from http://www.mo-

expecting to make. “Agree to reschedule a meeting or a visit if it’s not vital. In that way, you’re avoiding a lot of potential trouble for yourself, and ensuring you won’t be putting additional strain on emergency and recovery crews, who are sure to be at full stretch in the coming days. “If you’re out and about when snow hits, then the simple preparation measures suggested above really can make a big difference to help keep you safe.”
