A week in Las Vegas is possibly the perfect five words you could ask for. You can explore Paris, Italy, New York, and Egypt all in a week and all in just several miles, by limo, sports car, taxi - or motorbike! Forget New York, Las Vegas is truly the city that never sleeps. I along with my partner Daniel and good friends Victoria and Shaun decided to spend our annual holiday in Sin City. It was my third time in the playground for adults and I was still as excited as a child on Christmas Eve. I was even more excited knowing it was Daniel's first time. There's so much to do in Vegas,

A week in Vegas By Hannah Mlatem

I thought writing a review would be an impossible task - but a trip to Vegas soon makes you realise nothing is impossible! We started the week of with a bang, and a scream, and a very fast lift ride to the top of the Stratosphere. It's a hotel and casino - oh and in true Vegas style has the highest roller coaster in the world - just perched on top. Being a thrill seeker I couldn't wait to ride the tallest roller coaster and the tallest observation tower in America. The rides are amazing, there's the Big Shot, that catapults you straight up, experiencing zero gravity, the x scream - which is completely terrifying and the Insanity Ride a must for the best views of the strip - while hanging face down to the ground from the top of the tower! From pumping adrenaline to Paris - that's Vegas for you. For those who don't mind heights - but prefer them a zero miles an hour there's the Eiffel Tower ride. You're taken right to the top where you will experience amazing views of not only the strip, but the Nevada desert. We had tickets to watch Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera so in preparation we spent a day at the spa in Caesar's Palace QUA Baths and Spa. A day wasn't enough - I could have spent most of my week there. It's a little bit of calming heaven in the middle of chaotic Vegas. We wandered around, women and men in separate areas, in gorgeous dressing gowns. There is a choice of spa treatments or the option to rest and relax. I was very impressed with the little details, such as little stations with ice cold hand towels, fruit, water, teas and coffees dotted around. The pool was sumptuous and the Arctic Room, the only place in Vegas where it snows 24/7 was a pleasant surprise. I topped the relaxing day off with a Champagne Pedicure - all in readiness for the theatre. Having watched Phantom several times in London's West End I did have reservations over how this one could match it - or even top it. In true Vegas style it blew my mind. Without giving too much away, I was amazed at the special effects while the story remains classic and moving. More Vegas musts that I recommend, and haven't stopped talking about since I came back, was the Bodies Exhibition at Luxor and O cirque de solei at the Bellagio. Unfortunately, but understandably photography isn't permitted at the Bodies exhibition. Although controversial, I would advise everyone to see this informative and thought provoking collection of donated human bodies. You get to find out what really is under your skin and how we work. The perfect end to the perfect week in Sin City was a sensational visit to the Bellagio's fine dining restaurant Sensi. The restaurant's atmosphere was so relaxing,

and the staff were warm and welcoming. As diners we were made to feel very comfortable and exclusive. As you make your way through the excellently put together menu, you can watch the chefs work their magic through the glass panelled kitchens. The wine choice was immense and there was soemthing for every palette. My fellow diners, Victoria, Shaun and Daniel were immediately impressed with the culinary skills of chef Martin Heierling. We were offered an array of starters and aperitifs. For mains we opted for steak and fish. I can honestly say it was the best steak I'd every tasted, juicy, succulent and perfectly cooked to my medium liking. We were completely full and tried to politely refuse dessert but our enthusiastic and passionate chef was adamant we try everything! To our surprise, and slight relief, out came a beautiful platter which can only be described as a dessert tower full of bite sized samples of everything off the menu! It's the first time I can say I truly tried everything on the dessert menu - all delicious and mouthwatering - I and my guests enjoyed every bite! In a nut shell - Vegas is a must - there's so much more the city offers that you can return to it again and again - I can't wait for my next visit.

The Three Salmons It’s a case of ‘back to the future’ at The Three Salmons in Usk, with the owners intent on recapturing its past reputation through a 21st century approach to quality and service.

Three Salmons Hotel www.threesalmons.co.uk

In the past three years the hotel’s public rooms, function facilities and bedrooms have undergone extensive refurbishment. There has also been a ’revolution’ in the kitchen. Head chef James Bumpass - who has 20 years’ experience in four and five star hotels and two rosette kitchens (including The Vineyard at Stockcross in Berkshire) - has created a menu centred on high quality, locally-sourced produce. James, who is also one of the hotel’s directors, specialises in ‘traditional, flavoursome, bistrostyle, home cooking’. His main courses include ‘pies with a difference’ like rabbit and leek suet pudding; his desserts range from salted caramel cheesecake to sticky toffee pudding with Malteser ice cream and frozen popcorn parfait with mini doughnuts. “Everything is home-made - from the bread for lunch and dinner service and the burger buns to the pasta for our smoked eel ravioli. We’ve even

converted a bit of waste ground into a vegetable patch for growing things like runner beans and radishes,” he said. With James at the helm, The Three Salmons gained its first AA rosette in just three months and its second 12 months later. It also has a Strawberry Award for its use of local food and suppliers. “The Three Salmons was once synonymous with the town of Usk, but its reputation had gone down, and negative comments spread like wildfire. We’re trying to get the ‘lively’ feel back. We want people to say it’s THE place to come - a great place to meet and eat.” The restaurant, with its open fire and cosy, welcoming atmosphere, is open from 12noon2.30pm and 6pm-9.30pm seven days a week. With its ‘new look’ function rooms, the hotel is also becoming a popular venue for weddings and other special occasions like quiz nights, music events and fashion shows.

Treat your beloved to an award winning meal for just £35pp in our intimate restaurant which boasts a gorgeous log fire. Price includes canapés, 3 courses and tea/coffee. Please view the menu at - www.threesalmons.co.uk Conclude the evening by retiring to one of our en-suite bedrooms for just £80 for 2 guests including the promise of a hearty Welsh cooked breakfast the next morning. The good life February 14 can be a difficult date when you're on your own. Bess Manson reveals how to embrace Valentine's Day as a singleton. All the barrage of red hearts, stuffed bears, chocolates and red roses bursting from our television screens and high streets - it's like trying to dodge a bullet any time you go out in public as a single, not just on Saint Valentine's Day itself but in the weeks leading up to that in-your-face celebration of romance. Nothing makes a single feel more starkly on their tod than a date like February 14. It's like a giant party with loads of promise of a good time that you're not invited to. It's all right for your average nauseatingly happy couple or those with a penchant for a fluffy heart-shaped cushion. Not so much fun for the unattached. But rather than lament your singledom, singles should embrace it, says dating and singles expert Avril Mulcahy (www.singlelista.ie). "Think of all the good words associated with that status: Freedom, fun, independence, adventure." Mulcahy, who founded Singlelista, a website dedicated to singles, says February 14 is like a bad headache as singles are constantly reminded of their status by the inescapable commercialism of Valentine's Day. "The holiday of love is clearly marketed as a holiday for two and with the constant reminders, it can be tricky for singles to feel in the mood for

love," she says And if that's not bad enough, the single woman in particular also has to endure rather grim labels such as spinster or old maid, which are bandied around so heartlessly. Mulcahy says she is trying to change the label "spinster", which conjures up a lonesome image. "Singlelistas enjoy every single second and celebrate their single status. They never lament about what they don't have in their life; rather they consider the time as an opportunity to do everything they ever wanted to do," she says with the enthusiasm of a Sex And The City script. As if echoing the Carrie Bradshaw (pre Big) mantra, Mulcahy adds: "Just because you don't have a significant other on Valentine's Day doesn't mean you can't celebrate the most significant person in your life you! The fabulous person staring back at you in the mirror." So celebrate that amorous saint's day in your own way. And in style. Here are some suggestions...

On the town Get your best threads on, gather up your single pals and hit the town. Go dancing. Sing karaoke. Flirt outrageously. But remember, this is not a night to look for the man or woman of your dreams. It's a night for you to celebrate the infinite possibilities and advantages of being single and free. Pamper yourself Spend the entire day and as much as you can possibly afford (and then a little bit more) on a day of pampering - hair, nails, massage, facial - until you look so delectable that anyone would be pleased to make you their valentine. Then revert back to the 'On The Town' option and flaunt your shiny new self. Have a party Throw a singles-only party with an anti-Valentine's Day theme. That means no red decorations,

especially of the heart variety. Ban any cupids and their arrows. And absolutely no roses - red or otherwise. While you're being all stoic about how great it is to be out of love, don't be surprised if all those anti-love celebrations brings you into contact with a like-minded soul who just ends up wanting to be your valentine. If that's the case, slope off quietly to a Valentine's Day bash. Tell no one. Take a break Go for a mini-break some place where there is unlikely to be any big emphasis on Valentine's Day - say, the South Pole? Seriously, go hiking or skiing or somewhere where you are absorbed in nature and as far away as possible from a city - Paris is definitely out! Alternatively, book into a spa for a few days where you can treat yourself to indulgent treatments to make yourself feel all gorgeous.

TRIED & TESTED Despite those New Year diet resolutions, willpower can be in short supply when the weather is cold and you're faced with tasty, comfort food and snacks. Laura Wurzal tests a new appetite-suppressing chewing gum which claims to keep slimmers on track.

Girls' night in Invite your gal pals to a sleepover. Think dodgy pyjamas, silly games, naughty cocktails and bad 1980s videos to dance and sing along to. Who needs a valentine when you have your best girlfriends to hang out with? Get a date If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Go online and join a dating agency. Get chatting with some potential valentines ahead of the big day and make a date with your favourite for February 14. Or, if you're feeling brave, send an early anonymous Valentine's Day card to someone you fancy, asking them to meet you at a certain time and place on February 14. Good story to tell your kids, right? Wallow in it If you're feeling sad that no one's heart is beating for you, then take a night to wallow in your Valentine's Day blues. Rent Bridget Jones's Diary, indulge in your favourite tipple, stock up on chocolate, batten down the hatches and have a good old feel-sorry-for-yourself evening. To make it a little less pitiful, get another single mate in on the act.

What is it? SlimGum claims to help both reduce appetite and increase weight loss. Each piece of SlimGum contains: Green coffee bean extract; chromium, which has been shown in tests to help reduce appetite and cravings for fatty foods; thiamin and biotin, which have a role in aiding the metabolism, particularly in processing carbohydrates; L-carnitine, which is renowned as a fat burner; and green tea extract. The maker claims that chewing up to four pieces of gum a day before a meal or snack can help with weight management.

Avoid the ex It's tempting to relive and embellish the good points of a past relationship but avoid the ex at all costs. This is not a time to move backwards. There's a reason that person is your ex. Stay strong. Send yourself a bunch of flowers if you have to but back away from that phone.

What's it like? Whenever I'm on a diet, I'm always tempted to snack and in the past I've tried to avoid temptation by sucking sugar-free mints or chewing gum. Unfortunately, I've found ordinary gum can make me feel more hungry rather than less. SlimGum looks fresh and appealing, and it tastes good too - the minty flavour is strong but not unpleasant. Also, unlike some normal gums, you can chew for ages and it still keeps its flavour. The claim to curb the appetite does seem to be true. I found I wasn't hungry at all between meals and I do seem to have shed a few pounds slightly faster than I anticipated. I will definitely stick to this gum as part of my weight-loss programme.

Read it and weep Get a copy of a jolly good love story, arm yourself with your favourite chocolate treat and immerse yourself in the fantasy of someone else's world. The Bridges Of Madison County, One Day, The Notebook, any of these should do the trick. Oh, and you might want to stock up on a few tissues. Embrace singledom There are couples everywhere who are longing to be single right now, so as mean spirited as it sounds, be thankful you're not entrenched in a miserable relationship on a day like February 14. Remember, you're a heck of a lot better off on your own than tied to someone who is only going to give you a silly teddy bear and a broken chocolate heart.

■ Information: SlimGum, £2.99 a packet. Each pack has 10 pieces, which is around two-and-ahalf days supply, and is available from Superdrug (www.superdrug.com) and SlimGum (www.slimgum.co.uk)

Don't cook up a storm on Valentine’s Day By Sarah O'Meara

Still not sure whether to make an effort, or avoid it altogether? Olive magazine's food editor explains how to add heat to your evening, without burning down the kitchen. Romantically-themed restaurant menus, over-priced red roses and a room filled with cooing couples can drain the romance out of any Valentine's Day dinner. Indeed Janine Ratcliffe, food editor of olive magazine, admits that she's more likely to be found hiding in her kitchen than in a fancy restaurant on the big day. "I won't be going out, I'll be cooking and sharing a bottle," says the writer. But for those who also fancy a romantic evening in, having to actually cook the food can get in the way of that perfect night. "Know your limits," suggests Janine. "Don't get all Gordon Ramsay and decide you're going to cook a three Michelin-star dinner for your loved one, if you've never cooked before. When it fails the evening will be a disaster." And even if you have wonderful culinary skills, spending the whole night in the kitchen is not ideal on a romantic evening, she adds with a smile. Make things easy on yourself by doing some preparation in advance, she suggests. "If you want to serve three courses, that's great. But why not make two of them ahead of time. Then you've got the security of knowing how you're going to start and end the meal - even if you have a disaster in the middle. It will also give you a bit of cooking confidence." To create a really special Valentines meal, Janine suggests focussing on the atmosphere. "It's not about spending a fortune or spending all day in the kitchen, but about presenting really lovely simple things in a beautiful style.

"Think about the extras: The wine, table decorations, lighting and the things you want to have ready when the person gets there." It's also important to analyse the practical side of things. "You don't want stuff that's hard to eat," says Janine. "If you don't know your guest that well, you don't want to embarrass yourself with prawn shells flying across the room."

Janine's top Valentine tips ❤ Don't serve noodles or spaghetti because the strands will end up hanging out of your mouth. ❤ Avoid serving corn-on-the-cob because they're impossible to eat seductively. ❤ Don't serve up slow-cooked casserole, as bits can get stuck in your teeth. ❤ Be careful not to drink too much before your date arrives. And remember that it's about sipping the wine, not necking half the bottle! ❤ Don't do anything that relies on a lastminute dash to the oven, like a souffle or deep frying. ❤ If you really want to impress someone then have a practise run, or make something you've made before.

Talking scents By Lisa Haynes

Embrace spring with an uplifting perfume If you've become disillusioned with your scent, it may be because, 'It's just so last season, dahling'.

fashion game, but if seasonal change appeals give your fragrance collection a spring clean instead.

The perfume industry is beginning to imitate the fashion world and the latest fragrances from Pucci, Balmain and Balenciaga have descriptions which read like a Fashion Week catwalk schedule. That heady winter fragrance you were spritzing during the party season will soon feel about as redundant as your sparkly party dress, when spring has sprung.

"Different perfumes can now be worn for day and night but also seasonally," McCormack says. "Just as musky, spicy notes work well to warm you up on cold winter nights, fresher, lighter notes can refresh and cool as we approach hot summer days.

"Over the last twenty years we have witnessed a move towards people having a 'fragrance wardrobe' rather than just one signature scent," explains Mark McCormack, owner of Rich Perfumerie (www.richperfumerie.co.uk). It seems your wardrobe isn't the only thing needing a revamp as the season changes. Closet perfumer Changing your style every six months to stay on trend is an expensive

"Spring can still be a touch on the chilly side, so you will still need a fragrance that has more depth and warmth to it than a summer fragrance which is usually a light cologne or a variation of your usual scent."

fragrance houses also echo the style vibe of the season. "I have seen two main trends emerging so far for spring/summer 11: floral blooms and the Seventies," McCormack reveals.

If you can't bear to say goodbye to your signature scent, many fragrance houses are tapping into the market of fresher, summer versions of their best selling classics, such as Daisy Marc Jacobs Eau So Fresh or Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Summer.

"Very Irresistible Givenchy L'Intense, Chloe Rose Edition and L'Eau d'Issey Florale all have roses at the heart of their floral explosions, with Clinique Happy In Bloom summing up the trend with an amazing floral bottle."

Fragrance fauna Just as catwalk trends dictate fashion,

Post-Valentines Day, Selfridges saw a 25% increase in rose fragrance sales last month. Seventies fever has also come up smelling of roses; back in fashion and in fragrance - if recent ad campaigns for Gucci and Chloe are anything to go by.

"There are plenty of scents that give a nod to the Seventies without being quite so strong smelling," McCormack says. "The decade is back in fragrance vogue with Flora by Gucci Eau Fraiche giving a nod to Seventies glam with its white capped bottle and

Seventies favourite patchouli aplenty in Guerlain's Idylle Duet." It's designer, dahling! When that It bag is just beyond your reach and those Louboutin heels are likely to send you bankrupt, you can still do the haute couture of fragrance with a designer scent. Forget the trend for celebrity fragrances, the past year has seen an influx of signature smells hit the luxury shelves - with a surprisingly affordable price tag. "The most recent designer scent to cause a stir in the fragrance world is Jimmy Choo, who launched his eponymous scent this year to much praise," McCormack says. "It's likely such fragrances will be the epitome of a brand distilled into a bottle of beautiful smelling juice, rather than having a new one every season like a catwalk show. "It would be very rare for designers to launch a scent to go with each of their new season's collections - this is because perfumes take many years to create from initial idea to launch."

:: Your spring fragrance should be light and airy with a touch of 'summer garden' about it. A good general rule of thumb is to avoid overpowering scents - it's important people see you before they smell you! :: Apply a fragrance you haven't worn before on the back of the wrist then leave for a few minutes for the scent to settle, enabling the different levels of the notes to absorb into your skin and

mix with your body chemistry. :: Don't test more than three fragrances at one time as your nose will become desensitised and you won't be able to detect the complexities of each fragrance. :: Use scent strips to try before you buy and take away the scent to smell. Spray the fragrance on the tip, bring the strip towards the nose then gently tap the strip, this helps release the fragrance. :: For the summer season, try an EDT (eau de toilette) or EDC (eau de cologne) as you don't want your fragrance to be too strong in the hotter months.

This Works' Perfect Legs was the shimmering final touch leaving my legs ready to party. But blissed out from the massage it was refreshing to wave off my therapist and relax on the couch instead of traipsing home.

I admit it, I'm a spa junkie. So when I stumbled across the at-home Return to Glory Rejuvenating Leg Treatment, I was sceptical it would match up to an all-singing, all-dancing spa. Less than five minutes after walking through my front door, my friendly therapist had set up a luxury treatment table complete with fluffy towels and relaxing music twinkling in the background. With the addition of a cooling eye mask, I'd soon forgotten I was in my lounge - and my to-do list of chores.

This leg treatment certainly gives spas a run for their money.

The treatment begins with a thorough exfoliation using Daily Boost Body Scrub to banish dead skin cells and boost skin tone. Once this was gently removed with a wet towel my feet were treated to Perfect Heels Rescue Balm, which was soothed onto my dry feet so the thick cream could absorb into my soles during the third step, massage. Apple Store Gallery - ‘Third Servings’ Our third annual group exhibition introducing artists new to Apple Store Gallery is now showing until 23rd February. We are delighted to welcome Juli-Anne Coward, Celia Johnson, Sophie Wagstaff and Maz Winstanley, local artists who have exhibited widely but not previously with us. They present a wide range of figurative and abstract drawing and painting. Allen Fisher, Barry Herniman, Valerie McLean return to the Gallery with some new work which includes large abstract canvases, watercolour landscapes and small mixed media paintings reflecting on memory. Some of the work is being shown as part of an ongoing programme of complementary exhibitions at Castle House Hotel, Castle Street, Hereford which visitors are welcome to go along and see. This exhibition will be followed from 26th February by Fine Art: Made in Herefordshire which is being co-curated with second year students from Hereford College of Arts as part of their Degree preparation and will show some of the innovative work being produced by them in a range of media. The Third Servings artists write of their work as follows: JULI-ANNE COWARD - “As a child I chose to paint the rooftops visible from my parents window. I have always loved painting all kinds of buildings from ancient to the most contemporary. I believe that all buildings have a certain energy of their own which is independent of the way they are used by the people who inhabit them. I do not have a preconceived idea of how a particular image will evolve, but I prefer to work instinctively and let the buildings divide the painting into different blocks of colour. I will experiment with surfaces and techniques and I will work with all sorts of media such as collage, gesso, plaster, oils, acrylics and inks. My dramatic use of colour permeates many of the pictures I paint. Colour and lines attract me and as I work I let the colours bleed into one another.” ALLEN FISHER - Engaged Embrace, a show of paintings across a range of media. “Engaged Embrace brings together a new series of paintings, derived from the themes of rural traps and carpenters’ tools. Research into these objects, underway now for more than twenty years, provides the origination for many of the shapes in these paintings, but these shapes overlap with Fisher’s earlier studies from moving human figures and landscapes with

contemporary urban streets. There is a vibrant use of colour in the show, which on the surface displaces the origination of the shapes into a new experience, defamiliarising the sense of recognition, giving the rigour of the work a fragility and freshness. The show includes oil paintings on canvas and board, alongside large watercolour and mixed media paintings on paper, offered in a range of sizes, both modest and ambitious.” BARRY HERNIMAN - “I have painted in many mediums over the years, oils, acrylics, gouache and pastel but always come back to watercolours... which were my first love! Nothing can quite match the excitement and wonder of wet and vibrant watercolours mixing and mingling on the paper. My colours have 'evolved' over the years and now my palette consists almost exclusively of transparent or semi transparent pigments. This allows me to get that lovely luminous 'glow' which to me is so much a part of the whole spirit of watercolour. The white of the paper is the light that shines through a succession of washes giving the painting depth. I travel quite extensively both home and abroad and use a variety of Hardbound sketchbooks for my paintings. These books come in A4 and A3 sizes and contain 140 lb Rough Saunders Waterford watercolour paper. I could now do full watercolour sketches without my paper buckling and my paints going flat and rather lifeless as they do on cartridge paper (which is what most hardbound sketchbooks contain). Then I came across another sketchbook in an almost square format which contained 140lb Hot Pressed watercolour paper. Because I now had this beautifully smooth paper to work with I started to use a Line and Wash technique to produce my sketches. I had not used this technique for years as I disliked doing pen work on rough paper but with the advent of these new books I was hooked! Line and wash is a great sketching medium as I can capture the scene quickly and concisely than before. My more detailed drawing work is offset by my looser,

broader washes as the lines now hold the edges even when colour 'strays' over them.” CELIA JOHNSON - “Celia graduated from Central St. Martins in 2000 with a degree in Fine Art. Her work is a response to a particular landscape/place; she makes drawings and paintings to describe and explore the experience of being in the landscape and which articulate her connection with a specific environment. Drawings made in the landscape are translated in the studio into oil paintings, large drawings and mixed media work. She is concerned with the formal qualities of drawing and painting, and with the process of creating a two-dimensional drawn and/or painted reality, true to itself, into which the experience of a particular place is distilled. Much of her new work has developed from a residency at Downstairs Gallery in Madley, Herefordshire, where she became increasingly interested in notions of the wild and wilderness. Recent drawings explore the relationship between imagined landscapes - for instance those based on myth and legend - and objectively experienced landscapes, and investigate the differences and similarities between drawings made in the landscape and those developed in the studio. She is currently making work in response to walking in the Black Mountains, specifically Twmpa (Lord Hereford’s Knob). Celia is a lecturer on the BA Fine Art degree course at Hereford College of Arts and is a Masters student at Cardiff School of Art and Design.” VALERIE McLEAN - “My paintings express my ideas about memory – how memories fragment, resurface and sometimes reform, during our waking and sleeping life. I strive to build up layers of images, working from the subconscious. I am interested in the need that most people have for reminiscence and sometimes, I allow one coating of paint to act as a veil, through which fragments of the previous image can be seen. “ SOPHIE WAGSTAFF - I studied at Goldsmiths College, University of London completing a BA hons degree in Visual Arts. Most of my work is based on capturing

moods and atmosphere whether I am using a camera or a pencil, my two great loves! The nude and the human form has become a very important subject for me. It conjures up so many feelings of the human vulnerability and sensuality, that I think has an appeal for every 'body.' Some of my drawings are self-portraits, a kind of self-discovery quite literally! However, when I sit and draw others, I feel a great intermit yet powerful opportunity to draw from life, there is something different to see every time. I love the fact that whoever I am drawing is portraying something of who they are just in a gesture. My most recent work has been in photography, a journey which has held just as much inspiration for me. I find that I 'draw' upon both these mediums, and that they pose important contrasts as my interests lie in gestures and capturing a moment.. Particularly with people. MAZ WINSTANLEY - Maz Winstanley was born in Brighton in 1947 and has lived in South Wales since 1982. During her time in Wales she completed a BA Hons. Degree in Humanities and in 1999-2001 attended Hereford College of Art and Design, taking an Advanced BTEC Diploma in Fine Art. Since that time, she has been working in various media producing large charcoal drawings and pastel work, together with some lino-cut printing. Recently, she has been working in oil but continues with the charcoal work. Whatever the medium, her work is figurative and largely narrative, being particularly interested in animated interactions between people. The print work has ranged from a series relating to the Ebbw Vale steel works, to a series based on William Blake's poems and aphorisms. She has previously shown work in Hereford, Abergaveny, Penarth, Cardiff and Abertillery. Five minutes with... Ronald Pickup Ronald Pickup stars in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Here, he discusses the film, working with its all-star cast, his love of India, and a role he'd still love to play.

Very! All the time! I'm one of those people who's been fortunate to always work with a terrific cast, whether it'' been a quickish television piece, or something longer.

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING IN THE PIPELINE?

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL?

IS THERE A ROLE YOU STILL HAVE AN AMBITION TO PLAY?

A theatre engagement, Heartbreak House, which we're doing at the Chichester Festival. It's on through July and August and may tour. It's with Derek Jacobi, who again is an old friend.

I got a call from my agent who said that John Madden, who I've worked with in the theatre, had said he'd got a part for me and he wanted to record me doing a reading on film. So we did that, and then he went in to bat for me with the production company. So it's all thanks to John. He sold me to them, and since then they've been wonderfully supportive.

I'd love to play somebody really unpleasant. But who has an aspect of him that makes you understand him. I'd love to do a big part like that on film.

Wye Valley Reclamation

WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT? It's a feel-good film without being sentimental, but watching it does leave you with a pleasant feeling. It's about seven or eight people thrown together quite accidentally, who end up in the same place on an adventure. It's about taking the plunge at a time of life when most people don't do that kind of thing.

Yes! What's lovely about him is that he is definitely a wannabe, because he's not actually any good at it. I think if I'd have been expected to play a successful lounge lizard, I'd have said no, because I'm not good at that. But what is good is when you're playing somebody who has all of those inclinations, but knows he doesn't cut the mustard, it gives him a vulnerability that is nice to play. IT MUST HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE THAT BALANCE - TO BE CHARMING RATHER THAN CREEPY Yes, absolutely. It's very good you've asked that, because all the time during filming I kept saying to John, 'Are you sure that wasn't too creepy?' But he always assured me it wasn't. But when it did slip into something we didn't want, he was always so wonderfully aware of it. YOU'D WORKED WITH MANY OF THE CAST BEFORE - DID THAT MAKE FILMING EASIER? It did. There's no question of it. There's a kind of code between you, so you don't have to go through certain things with each other because you already know how you're going to react. When I was very young and first at the National Theatre, Maggie Smith was there. Subsequently, I've worked with Judi Dench in many things. I hadn't worked with Diana Hardcastle, Tom Wilkinson's wife, but I already knew her because I'd worked with Tom before. The only one I didn't know was Dev Patel, who was a joy to meet. WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEAVE YOUR OWN LIFE AND TRY SOMETHING NEW, AS THE CHARACTERS IN THE FILM DO? Being able to break out into fresh territory is one of the great things about being an actor. That sounds a

Herefordshire’s largest reclamation yard bit glib, but it's true. By and large we've never had lives that have been completely settled or had a routine we've wanted to break out from. So if you meant, do I ever feel like that, I don't really. HAD YOU BEEN TO INDIA BEFORE? No, I hadn't. It was an experience I'd never expected to have. That's why, always as actors, we wonder if there's going to be something round the corner that is going to unseat you from anything like a routine, because I know that at my age - not that I'm that old, but I'm in my seventies - I didn't think I'd have India on my list of places to see. Then wallop! Out of nowhere came this film, and you're into another adventure. It was incredible!

and much more! Monday–Friday 8-5 Saturday–Sunday 8-4 Lloyd George House, Fordshill Road, Rotherwas, Hereford HR2 6NS sales@wye-valley-reclamation.co.uk

01432 353 606

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO BACK AND EXPLORE IT MORE? Yes I would. I think I'd want to spend more time in different places. I'd have to think about it, which sounds as if I'm cautious and not loving it, but I think it's the most wonderful, life-enhancing place, despite many of the downsides of that kind of poverty. It's a place that leaves a very big stamp on you. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PART YOU'VE PLAYED? I do, it's a part I played back in 1983 - George Orwell in a little film about him writing 1984. It was a script by Alan Plater. And also Fortunes of War. That was Plater too, and was wonderful. Then certain things I've done at the National Theatre, such as Long Day's Journey Into Night with Olivier, and more recently Waiting For Godot with Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Simon Callow.

Five minutes with... Len Goodman Yes, that's right. We booked a holiday before we'd even decided to get married, so it all tied in lovely. My wife's brother lives in Japan, he'd come over for Christmas, so it seemed a perfect time to do it. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THIS YEAR'S STRICTLY? I probably say it every year, 'Oh, it was the best ever', because you're expected to say that sort of thing, but without doubt it was the best one. When you saw the viewing figures, it was the biggest ever too. It was such a great cast.

Len Goodman, who was happy to back EDF Energy's Safe, Warm and Well campaign this winter, was a professional dancer with his own dance school before finding fame as head judge on Strictly Come Dancing. He discusses his recent wedding and why Strictly's judges will always fall out from time to time. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RECENT WEDDING. IT WAS A WHILE COMING It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. We've known each other for 20 years and been together for 10 of them, so I guess it was about time we got married. Then we went away for a week and got a bit of sun. But I did make sure my mum was looked after back home during that time too. DID YOU HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL STRICTLY COME DANCING HAD FINISHED BEFORE YOU COULD ARRANGE THE WEDDING?

I thought the final was amazing, it was a really spectacular series. Going to Wembley was great, a highlight. And, of course, we're now on the Strictly tour. We've got many of the cast on it; Louis Smith, Denise Van Outen and Lisa Riley... they're all with us. We'll be here, there and everywhere in Britain, continuing the Strictly show. IT MUST FEEL AS IF IT NEVER GOES AWAY Well, it doesn't really. Because once that's over, there's only a few weeks before Dancing With The Stars starts (on March 18), so I'll be in Los Angeles doing that. It's a wonder my paddles haven't worn out! It's such a lovely show to be a part of, there's nothing horrible about it. It's a real pleasure - but don't tell the BBC I said that because they might want to drop my wages!

You look at dance through the eyes of your experiences, so I might be having a go because the footwork is all wrong, but somebody else might be praising musicality. But our little spats don't carry on after the show. And if there is a flare up, it all adds to the fun of the programme. WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM CONTESTANT? Alan Sugar, I'd love him to do it. Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross would be good. Wouldn't it be lovely if Simon Cowell invited me to be a contestant, singing away, on his show, and he could come on and trip the light fantastic on Strictly? That'd be a bit of fun. But I must say the BBC do a great job of getting a lovely mix of people on from all different walks of life. YOU'VE BRANCHED OUT INTO PRESENTING DOCUMENTARIES RECENTLY. WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO MORE?

We differ sometimes because although we're all involved in dance, we're all from different forms of dance, like ballet, choreography, and I'm an old ballroom fella.

The New Fiesta ST Now available at Raglan Ford Ford has announced prices for a two-series Fiesta ST line-up at £16,995 and £17,995 on the road. These prices, which are up to £2000 less than segment competitors, make the exciting Fiesta ST the most accessible new hot hatch on the UK market. News of hot prices for the next fast Ford comes as UK dealers mark the arrival of the full Fiesta range in their showrooms. Orders for this latest model have already exceeded 15,000.

aluminium, four cylinder petrol engine which combines high pressure direct injection, low inertia turbocharging and twin independent variable cam timing.

Building on this momentum, all of Ford's 530 UK dealers have set aside January 24th as "Fiesta Day" to help manage unprecedented levels of interest in Ford's new baby - the UK's top selling car since 2009.

The new Fiesta ST develops 182PS and peak torque of 290Nm. Sprinting from 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds, the sporty ST remains capable of returning 47.9mpg and CO2 emissions of just 138g/km.

In addition to special showroom features and attractions, Ford has also launched a Facebook app which analyses information on profile pages to match users with their ideal Fiesta specification. The app also encourages the submission of ideas on the perfect 24 hours in a new Fiesta - as already enjoyed by singing star Jessie Ware.

Unique suspension and steering tuning and enhanced Torque Vectoring Control (eTVC) combines with a 15mm lower ride-height to deliver significant dynamic improvements.

Sports Technologies The performance star of the Fiesta range is powered by a 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost, all-

The ST2 trim adds partial leather heated Recaro seats, Sony DAB radio, Ford keyless start, privacy glass and LED daytime running lamps. "The UK's renowned love affair with fast Fords is about to get another boost," said Mark Ovenden, Ford Britain managing director. "We have had fantastic success with the new Focus ST, and the Fiesta ST will deliver similar thrills to a whole new audience and at a uniquely accessible price."

Haggle for the best deal Almost a fifth of us Brits hate to haggle, but admit that when buying a car in this difficult economic climate they are forced into it. New research completed by online car research and buying portal Recombu Cars, has found that a further third (33%) of British car buyers say haggling does not come naturally to them.

Of the 2,000 respondents, 29% said intimidating sales staff influenced them negatively, while 18% were put off by a lack of knowledge about what they were buying. Among the most common symptoms of haggle anguish were racing hearts and blushing at 19% each, stuttering at 13% and then a dry mouth and sweaty palms, both with 12%. However, 21% of the same sample said that information gained online - including prices helped them to haggle in person, with 13% going further and preferring to simply buy online and cut out the haggling process altogether. Rory Reid, editor of Recombu Cars, says: "In the current economic climate everyone is trying to look after the pennies and even though we

might not like doing it, Brits are being forced to haggle for the best deal. "Access to information online has certainly made the buying process easier and it helps shoppers get away from pushy salesmen who will do anything to get their hands on your money."

What your car says about you The colour and type of car you drive can not only affect the way you drive, but can also speak volumes about the kind of person you are.

their test. A deep subtle red rather than flashy letter box red can also reflect passion and commitment,

It is a scientific fact that colour causes chemical reactions in the brain and body which in turn affect our behaviour.

The colour blue, however, can lower your blood pressure level and help to organise your thoughts.

The colour red stimulates the part of the brain associated with strength and also generates a certain amount of aggression, and not just in young male teenagers who have just passed

Novelty colours such as yellow inject a sense of fun into people’s personalities, pink highlights your femine side and silver seems to make most people feel confident.

Black cars are less common these days but still scream power, ambition and high self esteem while white cars generally indicate open-page mentality and an acceptance of new ideas. The type of car you drive also reveals the secrets of your personality.

■ If you drive a car like the Ford Ka or Peugeot

There are four main groups of types of cars – executive cars, such as BMWs, Mercedes and Jaguars; superminis, such as Renaults, Peugeots and Fords; off-road vehicles , such as Land Rovers and Jeeps and sports cars, such as MGs. Lotus and Toyotas.

■ If you have a basic executive car you are

probably an upwardly mobile person who likes to be seen as ambitious. ■ If you drive a more luxury executive car, such as a BMW 7 series, you are selfimportant and someone who never gives way.

206 you float through life but are incisive. You need to be in control and aspire to comfort and image rather than material riches. Renault Clio and Mini drivers in particular are likely to be artistic and an individualist. 4x4s drivers are highly controlling people but protective of others. If you drive an off-roader you portray yourself as being practical and efficient and often fantasise about being abroad. Surprisingly, if you drive a sports car you are probably practical and conservative. You may be slow moving but you are very thoughtful. You are also a romantic at heart but like to keep your private life to yourself.
