Get your lawn ready for spring

PRING may be just around the corner and with gardens just about the start bursting into life now is the optimum time for preparing your turf for the season ahead. Experts in the landscaping industry from Hayter have some tips on how to ensure your garden is looking in top condition by the time spring rolls around. Get your mow on – while many may be tempted to leave their lawns alone for the colder months, neglecting it now could actually leave you with more problems later on such as thinner, diseased or less dense grass. If the weather and ground conditions seem reasonable, then there’s no harm in mowing over grass that is long enough, using a high cut setting. However, do be careful not to walk on the grass if there is a frost. Inject some colour – winter flowering plants will give a new lease of life to your garden this month. A popular choice is Cyclamen, which vary in colour from red pink and white can be brought to flower between autumn and spring. Winter Jasmine is perfect for archways or climbing over low walls. With its yellow star shaped leaves, this is definitely an eye-catcher. Let it snow – even though it’s March, we could still see some snow and this can sometimes can act as an insulator, protecting plants from the cold. However, if we see a heavy bout of it, this can cause leaves and branches to break. Avoid walking over snow on your lawn as this can encourage the growth of fungal diseases in the grass. Keep it clean – keeping your garden equipment clean is important all year round, as the engine surface needs to be clear of debris, chaff or grass. The Harrier 41 series mowers include an Easy Wash port, helping to remove cuttings from under the deck in seconds. The easy to use grass bag on the mowers can also be lifted through the handle bars for easy emptying. Clear it up – make sure that you keep your lawn clear of debris over the winter months. Leaves, branches and other bits of rubbish must not be left on the lawn for long periods of time as they can cause the growth of moss on the lawn. If this does happen be ready to use your Scarifier in the spring months ahead. Christopher Cooper, Product Marketing Manager at Hayter, commented, “Looking after your garden in winter can be tough, but our winter tips along with the use of our quality and reliable mowers, will ensure your lawn is thriving come spring time. Selected models in our Harrier range also come with a five-year warranty.”

Meghan’s choice - how to grow your own peonies

spring, keeping the rootball as intact as possible. How long will the flowers last? That largely depends on the weather. Vast bowls of petals emerge from thick stalks above the pretty foliage in late spring and early summer, which will need supporting with a stake or frame to

stop them falling over in the wind. The flowers of herbaceous peonies are shortlived, lasting little more than a week or two, and if it rains they won't last that long, as wet weather tends to make them flop, particularly the heavy, double flowered forms. Any recommended varieties? If you want huge pink fragrant double flowers, try Paeonia lactiflora 'Sarah Bernhardt', which is favoured by commercial cut flower producers. Familiar favourites include P. officinalis 'Rubra Plena', a deep red, frilly double cottage variety, or if you want a larger tree peony, growing up to 2.5m, consider P. ludlowii, which bears zingy yellow saucer-shaped flowers. For a longer flowering period go for 'Bowl Of Beauty', a Japanese type which flowers for almost twice as long as the others and has a fantastic fragrance, growing to around 90cm, so it will need staking. Any rules for cutting? Don't cut stems in their first year of planting. Leave the plant to strengthen a bit and you'll have more blooms to cut the following year. Always leave at least a third of the stems on each plant, which will help it gather strength and feed the root through summer and early autumn. Indoor tips Acclaimed floral designer Judith Blacklock, founder of The Judith Blacklock Flower School (judithblacklock.com) in London, explains: "You must cut peonies in bud but there must be some colour showing in the bud or it won't open."

She recommends pairing peonies in arrangements with astrantia and Alchemilla mollis. Peonies are thirsty cut flowers, so fill up your vase every day with fresh water and they should last about a week. Snip off the base of the stems every couple of days to help them last a little longer. "Remove the lower foliage but don't discard it as you can mass the leaves together and they will look gorgeous," Blacklock adds. "The cooler the atmosphere inside, the longer the flowers will last."

huge flowers (but less of them), debud the sideshoots in April or May with a sharp knife. Will they flower the first year? You might be lucky, but peonies don't like being moved or replanted, so it may take a year or two for them to settle in before flowering. If you are transplanting existing plants, do it in early autumn or

UNDITS have been predicting that peonies may feature in Meghan Markle's wedding bouquet, so enamoured is she with these saucer-sized romantic blooms. In the early days of dating Prince Harry, she posted a picture of a beautiful pink and white spray of peonies on Instagram, with the caption: 'Swooning Over These. #London #peonies #spoiledrotten. You too could have peonies flowering in your garden come early summer, and some will be at their best around the time of the royal wedding in May. Their blousy blooms, in shades from deep red to white and everything in-between, add a touch of glamour to borders and, if you can bear it, you can cut them and bring them indoors. How easy are they to grow? Pretty easy, in the right conditions. The pot-grown peonies you find in garden centres can be planted at any time of year, while bare-rooted types are ideally planted in October. They prefer heavier soil in a sunny or slightly shaded spot, and add plenty of organic matter to the planting hole before you start. Don't let them get waterlogged, though. Add horticultural grit if the soil is extremely heavy. Don't plant them too deeply - the soil should just cover the topmost tuberous roots. Mulch them lightly in February or March with potash-rich wood ash to increase flower production. If you want

Wood treatment is a hot topic, and one local, family run company is telling you about their procedures of effectively treating and selling timber for fencing. Woodland Services, based on Hereford Road, Abergavenny, has been trading for over 50 years with the current owners entering their fourth year in the business and are ensuring the quality continues. They specialise in providing quality, locally sourced and appropriately treated wood for both agricultural and domestic use, and pride themselves on their endeavour to bring their treatment process as up to date as possible with a lot of money invested into their programme for machinery and tools. Tracey O’Leary from Woodland Services said, “Before we treat our timber in house in our fully upgraded, computerised treatment plant we ensure that the wood is dried to 28% or less moisture content. It is then pressure treated to Class 4 specification – Direct soil or fresh water contact using Koppers Celcure AC500 – giving

THE ever popular Swansea City Opera returns to the Borough Theatre this month with a revival of its hugely successful 2011 production of the Barber of Seville, Rossini’s most famous opera - razor-sharp and full of twists and turns. A young Spanish nobleman, Count Almaviva, is in love with the beautiful and rich Rosina, ward of the lecherous Doctor Bartolo, who plans his own marriage to her. Along comes the meddling Figaro, the town barber, and suddenly we have all the ingredients for confusion and mayhem. From Figaro’s famous entrance aria ‘Largo al factotum’ to the frenzy of the Act One finale, The Barber of Seville makes for a rollicking evening’s entertainment. Don’t miss this ultimate feel-good opera that is always cheerful and fun. Picture by Guy Harrop Swansea City opera is known across the UK for its high, quality and engaging performances of comic opera and this sparkling performance will be no exception. Sung in English the production is set in period Seville, with outrageous 18th Century costumes that complement the fizz and flare of Rossini’s musical genius, it is perfect both for the established operagoer, and those seeking to engage with opera for the first time. The production is designed by Gary McCann with costumes by Gabriella Ingram, directed by Brendan Wheatley and accompanied by the Swansea City Opera orchestra. There will be a pre-performance talk about the opera and production at 6.15pm given by the Artistic Director of Swansea City Opera, Brendan Wheatley The performance takes place on Saturday, March 17 and tickets are available from the theatre box office on 01873 850805

A Mother’s Day cinema treat Ed's place of origin," Wilson, who is Texasborn, adds enthusiastically. With careers spanning over two decades, both Hollywood funnymen have huge blockbuster comedies under their belts. For Wilson, the list of hits includes Zoolander, Wedding Crashers and Meet The Parents. Meanwhile, one look at Helms and you're instantly reminded of his brilliant turn as Stuart Price in The Hangover Trilogy. But Father Figures is the first time these two stars have teamed up as leads for a two-hander. With Helms playing highly-strung doctor Peter (also a down-beat divorcee struggling to get on with his teenage son) and Wilson portraying Kyle, a beach bum who's been living a charmed life in Hawaii with his young wife, their characters couldn't be more different. Add in Glenn Close as their eccentric mum Helen, and you've got some stellar casting. "She is a wonderful actress," notes Wilson of the Fatal Attraction star. "And even more than that, just hanging around on set, and laughing, and going to dinner was fun." Together, the three play out the crazy revelation that sets up the story: not only have they been misled by Helen for their entire lives, she admits she has no idea who actually fathered them. And Helms says he loves the message of the movie, as he reckons it's something people can empathise with. "There is this big lie at the centre of this family, that gets exposed and then it gets

kind of reconciled," he elaborates. "It's something that every family can relate to in one form or another. You just have to step back from conflict and get a little higher altitude and be like, 'Everybody's intentions are good and there is a foundation of love here, so can't we just get along?'" Meanwhile, much of the film's comedy arises from the pair meeting a multitude of potential fathers. You've got Oscar winner JK Simmons as a tattooed, reclusive con artist, Christopher Walken as a quirky veterinarian and former American footballer Terry Bradshaw as, well, himself. As well as the laughs and the bickering, we also see how the quest leads to the brothers, who had grown distant over the years, having some nice bonding moments as they re-connect. In terms of what the future holds for the actors, Helms has a show on Comedy Central called the Fake News with Ted Nelms. "Ted Nelms being my news anchor alter ego", he explains, before a supportive Wilson quips, "A lot of people talk about fake news ... Ted Nelms delivers it." And while Wilson consistently nabs a variety of impressive film roles - from romcoms to animated children's movies to more serious thrillers - one thing he would like to return to is screenplays. His last writing credit was for 2001 comedy drama, The Royal Tenenbaums, and he jokes probably "acting has got in the way". "I think sometimes it's fun just to act and writing can be a bit more like having a term

paper," he says. "But when you get on a roll, it's great." His writing skills have come in handy over the years. "I didn't study acting and so one of the things that has always helped me is an ability to come up with stuff for something that I'm acting in - a way to maybe make a scene better," he says. "And so you probably exercise that muscle a little bit even when you're acting, just going over the script and trying to come up with ideas." He adds passionately of his writing: "It is always one of those things that I think I'm going to get back to - and I imagine I will." Father Figures is out in cinemas now.

EW comedy Father Figures sees Owen Wilson and Ed Helms play fraternal twins who discover their mother has lied to them about their allegedly deceased father. The duo talk to Georgia Humphreys about the film's message, their own relatives and working with superstar Glenn Close. Filming Father Figures became quite the family affair for Owen Wilson. The comedy sees the actor starring alongside Ed Helms as fraternal twins who find out that their mum has been lying to them about their father's death. After discovering he did not, in fact, die of colon cancer before they were born, the brothers hit the road to find their biological dad - and a stop along the way sees Wilson's real-life brother, Andrew, do a funny scene in the movie. "He's the quiet talker when we're checking into the motel," reveals 49-year-old Wilson, who also has another actor brother, Luke. He adds: "It was good to discuss scenes with Andrew and get his perspective on stuff. "He loved it as much as I did and so it was just fun for us to think of stuff that might be good for the movie." Helms, 44, agrees working with Andrew was fun: "It gave us a real bearing on brotherhood." "And it was fun having your mom on set!" says Wilson with a grin as he turns to Helms. "My kids came and we were in Atlanta that feels like home to me because I've been there so many times, and it's actually

Let’s hear it for the mums! M OTHERS! Where would the world be without them? It wouldn’t be so populated, that’s for sure. Yet on a serious note, as Pam Brown once said, “You never realize how much your mother loves you till you explore the attic - and find every letter you ever sent her, every finger painting, clay pot, bead necklace, Easter chicken, cardboard Santa Claus, paper lace Mother’s Day card and school report since day one.” So if you do nothing else this March make sure you show your mum how much you love her, because at the end of the day you’ve only got one mum and like the

old Jewish proverb goes, “God could not be everywhere and therefore he made Mothers.”

“The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.”

Here’s a few more quotes to liven up that dull old Mother’s Day card this year.

- Honore de Balzac “Perhaps it takes courage to

raise children.”

― John Steinbeck

“If you can’t go back to your mother’s womb, you’d better learn to be a good fighter.” ― Anchee Min

“Mothers and their children are in a category all their own. There’s no bond so strong in the entire world. No love so instantaneous and forgiving.” ―Gail Tsukiyama “My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.” - Mark Twain

ONCEPT Players, one of South Wales’ most exciting theatre companies, return after the success of The Importance Of Being Earnest and Shout! with a ship load of dodgy pirates and a bevy of beauties as they bring a classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta to theatres this March. Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera is packed with sentimental pirates, blundering policemen, absurd adventures and improbable paradoxes. Frederic, a pirate’s apprentice, falls head-overheels in love with Mabel, the daughter of MajorGeneral Stanley. Frederic is due to be released from his apprenticeship on his 21st birthday, but there’s a snag. Born on 29 February, Frederic discovers that he is technically still a youngster. Although very much in love, his dedication to duty is unshakeable. Can he find a way to live happily-everafter with Mabel? One thing is sure, with Gilbert and Sullivan, the path to true love is never straightforward. Concept Players have just been nominated for 7 awards for their 2017 productions of Evita, The Importance of Being Earnest and Shout! by the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) who said of their last performance "This company is professional to its finger tips no wonder they have this following in South Wales" So perhaps it’s worth a night out to see this talented bunch. The Director of the show, Paul Buckle said, “It is over 20 years since we last put on this show and we think the music and humour is accessible as it ever was. Everyone knows the songs “I Am A Modern Major General” and “Poor Wandering One” – add in the fantastic humour and you are guaranteed of a great night so come and along and see for yourself! The Pirates Of Penzance opens at the Borough Theatre, Abergavenny on Thursday, March 10 until Saturday, March

Put safety first on motorway journeys greatest on motorways,“A serious danger is when there is insufficient time and space between vehicles travelling at high speed. As well as this, distracted drivers – using a mobile phone or device, re-setting the satnav or attempting to eat and drink at the wheel – pose a risk to themselves and those around them. “Poor lane discipline brings risks – for example, driving in the middle lane when the left hand lane is empty, or changing lanes without proper observations or signalling. This also applies around junctions when drivers are leaving or joining the motorway. Too often drivers make last-minute decisions, either deliberately or unintentionally, and end up cutting across lanes of traffic to get off the motorway or into the correct lane if the carriageway is about to split. “Busy urban stretches of motorway are particularly risky, as there are often several junctions and intersections across short distances. “It’s also important to remember that there are risks when traffic is light. In these situations there is little or nothing to engage the attention of a driver on a long journey. As a result, alertness can drop and concentration can dip, making it easy to miss a developing hazard. Neil Worth added: “By acknowledging these risks, you are taking a big step toward making a motorway journey safer.” Ten tips for safer motorway driving: • Plan your journey so you know when to join and leave the motorway. You’re

far less likely to be taken by surprise when it comes to choosing the correct lane at junctions and intersections. • Choose a safe speed and use the left hand lane of the motorway unless you are overtaking. • Check your following distance by the ‘two second rule’. Watch the vehicle in front go past a signpost, under a bridge or past some other reference point. Then speak out: “Only a fool breaks the two second rule.” If you pass the same point before you have finished the sentence, then you are too close. • Double your following distance in wet weather. • Scan the road a long way ahead so that you have early sight of developing hazards. • Make regular mirror checks. If you observe a fast-approaching vehicle, then take steps to move out of its way. Before changing lanes, check your mirrors and blind spots, and indicate your intention to move either left or right. Only commence the manoeuvre when you know you can complete it safely. • Avoid any sort of distraction. No mobile device, no interfering with stereo or satnav, no eating or drinking. Give 100% of your attention to driving. • If you are about to miss your motorway exit, don’t make last-minute risky manoeuvres to leave the motorway. Continue to the next junction and turn around, or follow the revised satnav instructions. • Familiarise yourself with the rules and signs that apply to smart motorways, so that you stay safe and avoid a

ticket for speeding or using a closed lane. • Knowing what to do if you break down in a stretch of smart motorway is a big help for road safety. Then you will know what to do if you experience a breakdown yourself, and will also understand what’s happening if another vehicle breaks down. GEM’s recently revised ‘Motorist’s Breakdown and Emergency Guide’ leaflet now includes details of what to do on a smart motorway in an emergency.

OAD SAFETY and breakdown cover specialist GEM Motoring Assist is encouraging drivers to put safety first on motorway journeys. The news comes as Highways England pledges to install additional emergency refuge areas at smart motorway locations where drivers are most likely to stop in live lanes. GEM road safety officer Neil Worth offered some reassurance for drivers: “Motorways may be the fastest roads we use, but they are statistically also the safest; and there are fewer collisions on motorways than on other roads,” he said. “However, the high speeds used on motorways mean that when there is a crash, it is likely to be more serious. That’s why on average around one in 50 motorway collisions is fatal, compared with one in 70 on all other roads. “We are also advising drivers to ensure they know the rules and signs relating to Smart motorways, which are becoming more commonplace. “It is regrettable that in spite of the spread of smart motorways, there is still no specific advice contained in the Highway Code. We think this is unacceptable, bearing in mind that so many motorists are being penalised every day for being at the wrong speed or in a closed lane.” Understanding how a smart motorway works, and knowing what to do if you are unfortunate enough to experience a breakdown in a stretch of smart motorway, could well prove a lifesaver.” Neil Worth outlines when the risks are

PETS’ CORNER

Sew much drama for Zorro

Z

ORRO is a mischievous young French Bulldog who has developed a fascination for his owners sewing kit. His mum knew he’d eat anything so was being very careful. However, in a fraction of a second Zorro had managed to find a needle and thread and swallowed it just as his mum tried to remove it from his mouth.

Luckily Zorro’s mum knew just what to do and called us. A very rapid trip to the vet and some x-rays followed that showed the needle in Zorro’s stomach. After discussing Zorro with a referral hospital it was decided that the pin should be able to pass through without causing a problem, so Zorro went home for the night with the promise of some food to help this process. ther x-rays were booked to ensure the pin was moving as expected. A worrying few days followed for all concerned and Zorro was monitored carefully. Further x-rays showed the pin was moving through Zorro’s intestines without causing a problem so far. Three days after the incident Zorro happily reunited his mum with her needle and thread after a visit to the garden! Thankfully Zorro is back to his best with his mum on high alert for any needles he might manage to find. It’s important to always remember dogs can swallow the most unusual items

that don’t seem tasty to us at all. If you think your dog has swallowed something they shouldn’t have always give us a call so we can advise you on what needs to be done. Not every dog will be as lucky as Zorro and taking action early is the key.
