CATCH The BFG (PG) arriving in cinemas this week, the story of precocious orphan Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), who is snatched from her bed at the witching hour by a hooded 24-feet tall figure. He spirits the girl over verdant valleys and crashing seas to the rolling landscapes of Giant Country. "No such place!" Sophie defiantly informs her host, who introduces himself as the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance). In order to rid Giant Country of man-gobblers, Sophie hatches a hare-brained scheme to visit The Queen (Penelope Wilton) at Buckingham Palace and the BFG joins her on this madcap quest. Directed with verve by Steven Spielberg, The BFG is a visually arresting ride that gently tugs heartstrings in between rollicking set pieces.
Quentin Blake: Inside Stories
A
s the BFG opens in cinemas this week, the National Museum of Cardiff has launched an exhibition of Quentin Blake’s magical illustrations. As part of the Roald Dahl 100 celebrations, this free exhibition brings together more than 120 of Blake’s illustrations, including many of his finest and most iconic works. Blake and Dahl’s collaboration began with The Enormous Crocodile in 1978 and continued to The Vicar of Nibbleswicke, published shortly after Dahl’s death in 1990. The exhibition gives a unique insight into the origins of some of Blake’s most popular creations, ranging from his illustrations in Roald Dahl's The Twits and Danny the Champion of the World, to his
own Clown, The Boy in The Dress by David Walliams and illustrations in books by John Yeoman, Russell Hoban and Michael Rosen. It includes first roughs and storyboards, many never shown before, with finished artwork to demonstrate how ideas evolved, often in close collaboration with the authors. It shows how Blake brings to bear a wide range of different techniques and media including inks, watercolours and pastels applied with a variety of touch, in response to the particular mood of a book and the nature of its characters, to create his distinctive and unforgettable illustrations. The exhibition is free to enter and will run until November 20.

A right royal bake-off at Talgarth Mill T
THE Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall get to grips with kneading bread at Talgarth Mill
ALGARTH Mill is a thriving community enterprise run by a group of dedicated and passionate volunteers. The once derelict Mill’s restoration story began in 2011 as part of the BBC's Village SOS TV programme. Five years on and expectations have been exceeded and the quality of the flour – and the baked goods made in the Mill’s café – has resulted in a number of awards for the enterprise. In 2015 the Mill received Silver in The World Responsible Tourism Awards and the Café at the Mill, The Bakers’ Table, won Gold in the National Tourism Awards for the best café in Wales. Since August 2011 when the Mill opened to the public it has welcomed more than 35,000 visitors and milled over 20 tonnes of flour. The original goal of “putting Talgarth back on the map” has been achieved, with 17 different nationalities being shown around the Mill in the last year.

A good choice of food is served either in the bar or the restaurant The Usk offers good food throughout, you can choose to eat al-fresco (honestly it does happen sometimes), in the bar or the air conditioned bistro-styled restaurant. There are now 10 bedrooms. Each bedroom carries the name of a bird often found along the banks of the River Usk - Kingfisher, Dipper, Heron etc.
The Mill’s most notable guests so far have been The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall who visited in July. After meeting various dignitaries at the gates they toured the Mill, Gardens and Cafe with Mill Manager Liz Rose and Café Manager Nicola Willis who introduced them to volunteers, suppliers, customers and children from the local primary school. When they were shown the Bakery the royal couple tried their hand at kneading and shaping bread. Prince Charles declared it “The Welsh Bake Off” and Camilla jokingly awarded herself ten out of ten! Liz Rose, Mill Manager, said: “It’s a happy coincidence that the Royal Visit has taken place during the summer of our fifth anniversary. Prince Charles and Camilla really seemed to enjoy their time with us and to recognise the hard work and commitment shown by our volunteers”.

WHEN the Trunki launched, it was hailed as a clever means to make kids take care of their own luggage. Ten years on, the brand is offering its "grown-up" customers a similar, but much cooler, product - the Jurni. Featuring a pop-up lid and top compartment for essentials, the carry-on hard case also has a seat to perch on. Made of sturdy material (supporting up to 100kg), it can even take the weight of much bigger kids. Jurni carry on case, £79.99, www.myjurni.co.uk
VERY holidaymaker fantasizes about clean seas and pristine sands. Now's the time to make that dream a reality as part of Make Holidays Greener month. Building sandcastles has always been a favourite fixture of family holidays, and more than ever, consumers are placing emphasis on the importance of clean beaches. Sadly, though, stretches of sand are still littered with debris - including plastic bottles, cigarette ends, food packaging, tins cans and even (disgustingly) dirty nappies and condoms. ABTA, Travelife and The Travel Foundation are urging travellers to take an eco-friendly approach to holidays as part of Make Holidays Greener month. People can sign up to take part in a Big Beach Clean Up, or help organise an event of their own. (Details can be found at www.makeholidaysgreener.org.uk). ABTA has also pulled together a list of tips for holidaymakers. They encourage tourists to carry as little plastic packaging as possible, and to carry a reusable water bottle. Plastics - which never degrade - are one of the biggest threats to marine wildlife, with 6.4

HE Old Railway Line Garden Centre, located in Three Cocks between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, hosted the annual Garden Centre Association’s (GCA) Wales & West regional awards last Tuesday evening. The family-run, independent garden centre was awarded the top prize of ‘Best Garden Centre in Wales and the West’ for the fifth consecutive year alongside ‘Best Customer Service’ and ‘Best Garden Products Retailer’. Garden Centre manager, Huw Lewis said: “We are delighted to have been awarded with such a prestigious award for the fifth year in a row. To be able to call ourselves ‘The Best’ in the whole of Wales and the West of England for another 12 months is a great achievement and is a result of the hard work and commitment of our amazing staff. A ‘landmark’ weekend in London by Nigel Heath
Marriott County Hall Hotel in the shadow of the London Eye
T
HERE is an amazing Edwardian building in a prime south bank position beside the River Thames right in the heart of London that was once a source of irritation to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Imagine yourself standing in one of the magnificent oak panelled reception rooms on the that day back in 1922 when King George V opened this fine baroque style building designed by Ralph Knott and built in Portland stone. Now imagine yourself gazing down on this mighty six-storey edifice, almost opposite the Houses of Parliament, with the a bird's eye view and 21st century perspective. You are, of course, in a pod on the famous London Eye and the building below you is the London County Hall, formerly seat of the powerful Labour controlled Greater London Council led by Ken Livingstone until 'Maggie' dissolved it back in 1986. Today part of this fabulous building is home to the five-star London Marriott County Hall which my wife Jenny and I have just visited as part of celebrations to mark a multi-million pound upgrade to further enhance its facilities. The hotel is an easy ride from Paddington

to The Westminster tube station, close to the Westminster Pier passenger terminal, awash with Thames pleasure cruisers and step-on-step off ferries. Gazing over the embankment wall, one cannot help but be impressed by the sheer length and scale of the former landmark County Hall building. A commanding arched entrance way and a spacious inner courtyard lead to the hotel entrance where a uniformed porter came forward to take our luggage. We checked in and went straight back out onto the embankment to join the moving tide of tourists and holidaymakers of all ages and nationalities enjoying the early Saturday afternoon sunshine. Just past the queues waiting patiently for the London Eye we came across the first of the free shows one can stop and watch all along this popular section of the path. There were jugglers, escape artists, singers and many more plus crowded open air restaurants and bars all the way between The Eye and the famous Globe Theatre. By 1.30pm we were getting hungry after our early morning train journey from Newport and escaped to the roof garden restaurant and bar on top of the National Theatre which is just a little out of the main stream and quiet at this time. We returned to the hotel around 4pm, having been treated to a totally unexpected fly past by the Red Arrows to mark the end of London's Gay Pride Week, and chilled out until the start of the media show and dinner. The Marriott team have done their best to incorporate the yesteryear fabric of the building into the hotel by exposing all the lovely parquet flooring, hidden for years under miles of carpeting, and restoring many of the magnificent oak panelled rooms and library for use as public and dining areas or as conference venues. They have also cleverly linked the building historically to its immediate surroundings with the use of feature wallpaper made up of Penguin book covers because the publishers Random House are based in The City of Westminster. They have also named the steakhouse and bar, pictured below, after James Gillray, the famous 18th and early 19th century political and social satirist because, of course, the building was for 64 years the headquarters of local government in London. I found this particularly amusing as I wondered just what Gillray might have made of the relationship between the strongly Labour controlled LCC and Mrs Thatcher's reforming Tory government. Before leaving The London Marriott County Hall we made the most of the following day with a Thames River trip and morning Sunday Service in St Paul's Cathedral. Well, other enticements might include a den, tucked away from the adults, preferably in a shady part of the garden that will not suffer from high use with little ones coming in and out all the time. To do it quickly, establish some shelter and fast-growing cover using plants such as willows. as clematis to climb up the canes in spring to provide flower cover. A treehouse may be the ultimate den, but it can be costly and complicated to erect if you're not a natural DIY-er, some even need planning permission so you may be better off letting kids make their own den. Leave a wild area for them to roam around in, preferably towards the back of the garden, but where you can keep an eye on them, providing a variety of twiggy sticks, plants and wood and let their imagination run wild. They can make their own camps using old curtains, old sheets, blankets and pegs. Sandpits provide young children with hours of fun, whether you buy a plastic one with a lid on it or a more permanent fixture made from a circle of logs set vertically into the ground or from a cleanedup tractor or lorry tyre. Use sand that is sold specifically for playpits, as it is non-toxic and won't harm children, animals, lawns or borders if accidentally spilt. Public play areas and sandpits with high use tend to replace the sand annually, but it is not always necessary to do this if you keep the pit covered when not in use. It's worth drying it out regularly, though, as bacteria and other bugs can breed in sand that is continually wet.
Help the kids make an insect house using old pieces of bamboo cane inserted into a small wooden frame or terracotta pot, and put out bird feeders and baths, nesting boxes and hedgehog and insect houses in this new wildlife space while the kids make a log pile in which insects and mammals can shelter. Treat them to a wildlife identification guide, so they can tell you what they've seen and a pair of binoculars for a better view. If you are creating an area for the children, there are many plants to avoid because they are either poisonous or irritate the skin including monkshood (aconitum), euphorbia, laburnum, daphne, digitalis, colchicum and taxus, although the list is pretty long, so it's probably wiser to teach children about the dangers of plants. HE second Saturday in September is Usk Show Day. This year it falls on 10th September. Held at The Usk Showground (NP15 1DD), the Show maintains its reputation as a traditional agricultural show by only accepting agricultural exhibits from Usk Farmers’ Club members farming within the old County of Gwent. However, there is so much more to this Show Day than just livestock. There are vintage tractors, a Steam Corner, plus a fun Companion Dog Show that is open to all. Children can join in the free make-and-take crafts and circus activities at the Junkfish tent. We also have inflatables, fair rides and side shows, plus 300 traders outside and under canvas, selling everything from agricultural supplies to fashion. New for this year in the Main Ring we are welcoming the Kangaroo Kids, Matt Coulter and Paul Hannam from the Australian Gold Coast, with their quad bike stunt show. The traditional Parade of Hounds will be made by the Curre and Llangibby Hunt once again and the Grand Parade of Livestock and Horses gives visitors the chance to celebrate our local farmers. Happy campers! Taking the car camping can be made easy, thanks to a few simple additions
M
ORE than 1.5 million people said the recent Brexit decision had caused them to rethink their holiday plans, choosing to go away in the UK instead. With the cost of foreign holidays at an all-time high, camping is fast becoming cool again. Gone are the days of heavy cotton flysheets and unwieldy tent poles - now camping is lighter, easier and faster. Not only that, but there's all manner of accessories to fit to your car to make the experience even easier. As anyone who's ever been camping will tell you, it usually brings with it a lot of kit. Clothes, cooking equipment, towels - it's easy to quickly fill up a car. That's why a roof box is the best place to start. You'll be able to get one from as little as ÂŁ99 - and you'll find it a whole lot easier to travel in comfort after getting all of your larger items stowed safely away on the roof. Next up, you're going to need power. Roll back 30 years, and the need to charge a phone or camera wasn't there. Now, however, keeping a mobile charged is at the heart of most people's daily routine. A power converter is the ideal solution to this, as it allows you to put a three-pin plug into the cigarette lighter slot. Just remember to regularly start the car, otherwise you may find its battery flat when you go to leave. Not only is it important to keep things charged, but it's good to keep things cool, too. An in-car fridge is the best idea for
keeping drinks and food chilled and ready to go. There are various fridges on the market designed to run off a car's power supply, which makes connecting them easy and hassle-free. Of course, with all this energy going out, your car's battery is going to take a beating. How to solve this? A solar charger. We know that the UK isn't the first word in sunny holidaying, but the majority of chargers work just as well in cloudy conditions - ideal for a camping holiday. Hook one up to the car and you'll keep it topped up with electricity. Ideal then, for avoiding the dreaded flat battery when you come to drive away. If you're planning a camping weekend, then cycling has to be high up the list. A bike rack is a must. One of the easiest to fit is a rear-mounted version. As the name suggests, this sits at the back of the car, and doesn't require any additional mounting. Of course, there are roof-mounted units, but these need bars to mount to and this adds an extra cost to the process. You don't need a big car to go camping. But with a few small additions, you can make the entire trip more relaxing and less of a struggle. The products that we've mentioned don't have to cost the earth either, but can add a huge difference to a camping trip away. Keeping stress levels down is all-important, and a few of these extras can help do just that.

HE wedding dress always has been and always will be one of the most important areas of the bride’s big day! Bridal designers Madison James (www.madison-james.com) foresee brides in 2017 sticking to the classics, while adding a unique touch of their own - perhaps a ballgown with delicate, eye-catching embroidery or a strapless mermaid silhouette featuring unusual textures. Open, dramatic and embellished backs aren’t going away anytime soon. Brides want to make an impact on both sides of the aisle, and as cathedral-length trains have dwindled, the dramatic back has taken its place as the showstopping detail for many wedding dresses. Another popular trend for 2017 is the prevailing mermaid silhouette. It hugs your curves and gives every bride the sophisticated glamour they want for their wedding day. This silhouette is perfectly at home as a simple, unadorned gown or can be covered in crystals to create all the drama your heart desires. Many brides love the form-fitting wedding dress- for sculpted satin to highlight their curves. But we’re also seeing a rapid increase in softer silhouettes, not only in The National shape but in texture. Fabulous florals I
T’S not just the bouquet that features flowers in the current on trend wedding. Floral motifs are everywhere, in cakes, hair, gowns and stationery.
Many couples are opting to do away with the royal icing and choosing instead a more simple, but no less delicious naked wedding cakes decorated with flowers and or fruit, such as this chocolate and vanilla bean cake decorated with cabbage roses. Why not experiment with florals in your stationery and place decorations. This card is from the Romance Garden Wedding Suite, which includes invitations, save the date cards, reply cards, seating plans, labels and banners, which can be customised to suit at zazzle.co.uk For an update on a bit of 1960s boho chic why not ask your florist to create a matching bouquet and floral crown. Go for big and bold like the photo, left, or something a little more delicate. If fresh flowers aren’t for you there are many varieties available in silk flowers, with or without gems, try www.libertyinlove.co.uk

Drinks on the terrace at Gliffaes Hotel
Wedding planning made simple
W
HY should planning your wedding be quite so fraught with stress? It does not need to be and at Gliffaes Hotel in Crickhowell, we can usually have the plan for a wedding day arranged in one meeting. This might be because we are a small hotel and so we cater for small weddings, from a party of four up to around 60. Gliffaes is not a hotel that is just dedicated to weddings and where you will have to spend your wedding day in an airless function suite with another wedding going on in the room next door. This is family run hotel with a real atmosphere, charm and character. You can have your civil ceremony in the period drawing room, move out to the glorious terrace overlooking the River Usk for your reception drinks and then
into the dining room for the wedding breakfast. If it is not going to be fine enough to have your reception outside then the sitting room around the open log fire makes a lovely alternative. Many people don’t want a complicated wedding and large party in the evening, especially those getting married for the second time. This suits us fine as we cannot cater for weddings past about 5.30pm unless the bride and groom wish to book the hotel for exclusive use, then pretty much anything is possible. We have hosted some very memorable parties here over the years! So, if you are looking for somewhere that feels like ‘getting married in a rich friend’s house’ (an actual quote from a bride) then get in touch with James Suter at Gliffaes. 01874 730371. james@gliffaes.com. Feel free to just come to the hotel and have a look around.

UMMER... The word alone evokes images of long, lazy days and sunshine holidays - but the signature scents of the season bring it to life even more powerfully. Perfumiers have skilfully captured evocative aromas - from the salty tang of the sea to the heady perfume of a cottage garden, and earthy incense of morning dew - into a host of home fragrances which sum up summer. Fragrance around the home gives a sense of character and individuality, and is now regarded as essential for creating atmosphere and setting a mood. Let the fun and games begin! Four years on from London's glittering event, the eyes of the world will focus on Rio when the Summer Olympics begin on Friday, August 5. Here are some pointers to warm up with...
T
here are 37 venues playing host to the sporting action - 32 in Rio de Janeiro, plus five football co-host cities: Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Manaus, Salvador and Sao Paulo - while 206 National Olympic Committees (countries) will be represented in 42 sport disciplines with 2,102 medals awarded. LIGHTING THE WAY The Olympic flame was lit at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece, on April 21 this year, and six days later was handed over to the Brazilian organisers at a ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. Its journey across Brazil has taken in more than 300 cities and all 27 states. The flame's final stop will be the opening ceremony at the Maracana Stadium, where it will light the Olympic cauldron to start the Games on August 5. THE OPENING PARTY The Maracana Stadium was renovated for the 2014 World Cup and now seats 78,838 spectators. Around 6,000 volunteers will be taking part in the opening ceremony, which has been created by a group of Brazilian film-makers, including Fernando Meirelles who directed 2002's City Of God. "I would be ashamed to waste what London spent in a country where we need sanitation; where education needs money," he's said of the budget being 10 per cent of what was spent for London 2012. BRITISH HOPEFULS Britain won 65 medals in 2012, so the pressure's on Team GB's 366 Olympic athletes to better the haul in Rio. Lookout for track and field athletes Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford, boxer Nicola Adams, swimmers Adam Peaty and James Guy, cyclist Laura Trott, rowers Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, and gymnast Max Whitlock.
RULING ON RUSSIA It's been a controversial time for Russia's athletes, and uncertain whether they'd be allowed to take part in the Games, after a state-sponsored doping programme was uncovered. Though the International Olympic Committee has announced it won't be imposing a blanket ban, individual athletes may still be forbidden to take part. PHELP'S HAUL American swimmer Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time, having won 22 Olympic medals, 18 of them gold. After reversing his decision to retire after London, the 31-year-old will be swimming in three individual events the 100m and 200m butterfly and the 200m individual medley - as well as relays.
GOLFING CONTROVERSY After more than a century off the bill, golf's being included in the 2016 Games - but there's been controversy, not least since many of the sport's famous faces (Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Adam Scott and Graeme McDowell) have withdrawn, reportedly in light of the Zika virus. BOLT'S SWANSONG All eyes will be on Usain Bolt, with rumours that this will be the 29-year-old's
Olympic swansong. Having won three gold medals in Beijing in 2008 (though he could yet lose one after relay team-mate Nesta Carter's failed drugs test) and more in London 2012, Bolt is bidding for a golden hat-trick.
TOKYO'S TURN The closing ceremony will take place on August 21 in the Maracana Stadium, where organisers will officially hand the Olympic baton over to Tokyo. It'll be 56 years since the Japanese city last hosted the Olympics. According to organisers, the 2020 Games will be "the most innovative ever organised, and will rest on three fundamental principles to transform the world: striving for your personal best; accepting one another; and passing on a legacy for the future". PARALYMPICS ARE GO The Paralympics will begin in Rio on September 7 and run until the 18th. The British team won 120 medals, including 34 Golds, in London four years ago, and was placed third behind China and Russia. Lookout for swimmer Ellie Simmonds, road and track cyclist Dame Sarah Storey, wheelchair athlete David Weir and sprinter Jonnie Peacock. ● Olympics 2016: Countdown To Rio and the Olympics Opening Ceremony will air on BBC One on Friday, August 5
● ADELE will go head-to-head with Beyonce at the MTV Video Music Awards, as the singers battle it out for the top prizes. The British star's up for Video of the Year for her smash-hit single Hello, while Beyonce was nominated for her Black Lives M a t t e r themed video Formation. Drake's Hotline Bling, Justin Bieber's Sorry and Kanye West's controversial video Famous - which features nude waxworks of himself and wife Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift - are also up for the gong. Adele and Beyonce received the most nominations over all, with Adele picking up eight and Beyonce 11. Both will also compete for Best Female Video, with Adele nominated for Hello and Beyonce nominated for Hold Up. The MTV VMAs will take place on August 28 at Madison Square Garden in New York. ● Former Blue singer DUNCAN JAMES has made his Hollyoaks debut in an explosive new trailer. A clip advertising the Channel 4 soap's action-packed 'Six Weeks of Summer' sees James in his first scenes as handsome policeman Ryan Knight. The 38-year-old's set to make his first appearance on the show alongside girlfriend Amy Barnes (Ashley Slanina-Davies) and her father Mike Barnes (Tony Hirst), who are returning to the soap. The trailer reveals a stormy summer, where old secrets will cause chaos. Nico (Persephone Swales-Dawson) is shown confessing to friend Peri that she's a murderer. ● Two former Britain's Got Talent contestants have been picked to become professional dancers on Strictly Come Dancing. AJ Pritchard and CHLOE HEWITT were called "absolutely brilliant" by judge Simon Cowell when they appeared on the ITV show in 2013. They were just teenagers at the time and now 20-year-old British Champion Hewitt has become the BBC One dance series' youngest ever professional dancer. She and Pritchard, 21, are among three new dancers revealed to be joining the show. The other is four-time British National Champion Neil Jones.

MONMOUTHSHIRE & POWYS THE POWER OF TWO
O you have an elderly relative who is struggling with domestic chores and is increasingly relying on you for help? Are you finding it difficult to provide that help and support? Do you feel guilty and overwhelmed? Then let us help. Diamond Home Support have now been in Abergavenny for a year, and our Home Assist Service has already transformed the lives of many of our elderly clients and their relatives. This service provides vital support for the elderly and less able in a friendly, caring and professional manner. We challenge the preconceptions of domestic care by providing a client-led rather than a company-led service. Our workers are thoroughly vetted and are chosen more for their personality, ethos and attitude than anything else. They are given plenty of time between appointments, so there is never the need for visits to be cut short in order for the worker to be on time for their next appointment. The same worker visits each week, month or fortnight, allowing the client and the worker to build trust and develop a relationship.
Loss of independence is humiliating and frustrating, and we therefore aim to make the experience as friendly and personal as possible. All potential clients are visited in their own homes. We talk them through the service, explain exactly how things work and answer any questions which they may have. We encourage relatives to be present at this visit so that they can satisfy themselves that their family members are not pushed into signing up for our services if they are unsure as to whether or not it is right for them. We appreciate that each individual, however old, frail or disabled, has the right to consider the pros and cons of our services before signing on the dotted line so we are happy to visit more than once should that be necessary. We appreciate that people lead busy lives and often find it difficult (if not virtually impossible) to provide the amount of support which their elderly relatives require. This leads to stress and guilt, with relationships becoming fractured and sometimes damaged beyond repair. Don’t suffer in silence; pick up the phone and use the power of two.

For families living with dementia, planning a holiday can seem daunting. But with the right advice and a bit of research, you can all enjoy a welcome break
Enjoying a holiday with someone who has dementia
H
OLIDAYS can revive the body and soul, and even a few days away from the stresses, demands and humdrum of daily life can work wonders. Thousands of UK families are living with dementia - associated with progressive memory loss, difficulty with thinking and language and carrying out everyday tasks and experts predict that by 2025, the number of people diagnosed will reach a million. Although getting away on holiday might be more difficult when a family member or loved one has the condition, the charity Dementia UK (www.dementiauk.org) has outlined some simple steps to make travelling with people with dementia go more smoothly... 1. Make sure you have medical insurance and take all of the documentation with you in case of a medical emergency. If you're holidaying in Europe, have an EHIC card - a free European Health Insurance card (visit www.gov.uk/ european-health-insurance-card) Prior to going on holiday, do some research so you know where the local doctors' surgeries and hospitals are located. 2. Ensure the person with dementia has ID and emergency contact details on them at all times. If they get lost, it will be easier for someone to get in contact with you. Potentially, consider a personal GPS that the person with dementia can wear. 3. Orientation is a challenge for someone living with dementia and being in an unfamiliar location could cause disorientation. Give the person with dementia a plan of the building and also walk them around the building you
are staying in when you first arrive. Print out some signage that you can put up around your accommodation, like toilet/ bathroom, bedroom, kitchen etc. 4. Plan your activities for in the morning as the person with dementia is likely to get tired as the day progresses and tiredness can cause disorientation. Also, don't plan too many activities as this can cause tiredness and exhaustion, leading to disorientation and potentially agitation.
This is Sarah. She’s busy cleaning her oven...
5. Portable low-level lights, that are easy to pack, will help during the night, should the person with dementia wake up and become disorientated by where they are staying. You can also get apps on your phone which provide night light. 6. Keep an eye on the person with dementia for signs of distress and anxiety. They may be feeling it, but not telling you as they don't want to ruin your holiday.

Driving test changes
T
HE UK driving test is set to feature satellite navigation and new manoeuvres from early 2017, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has announced. At present, the 'independent driving' section of the test is just 10 minutes long, but the DVSA wants to extend this to 20 minutes and ask candidates to follow directions from a satellite navigation system, rather than following road signs. A statement from the DVSA said: "These changes are designed to help reduce the number of collisions on higher risk roads - most fatal collisions are on this type of road. "More than half of car drivers are now using satnavs, and the Government wants new drivers to be trained to use these safely." The new test will also see manoeuvres such as reversing around a corner replaced with more real-life scenarios such as driving into and reversing out of a parking bay.
The changes to the test are subject to the outcome of research and feedback from a six-week consultation which closes on August 25, but the proposals seem to have the backing of the driver training industry. Mark Peacock, head of BSM, said: "The proposed changes to the driving test - particularly the extended independent driving and use of a satnav - should help to produce better, safer motorists. We have already had positive feedback from our instructors and their pupils and therefore fully support these proposed changes." Edmund King, president of the AA, also added his support, saying: "We know that new drivers are a higher risk on the roads, therefore we need to better prepare them for realworld driving. These changes will test drivers in a more realistic manner which is essential to improving their safety once their L plates are removed."
EEP has pulled the covers off a new special edition version of its popular Wrangler off-roader to commemorate the company's 75th anniversary. Called the Wrangler 75th Anniversary, the limited-edition 4x4 is based on the standard Wrangler Overland, and features a number of unique styling features both inside and outside the car. The exterior features a bronzefinished front grille, a body-coloured dual top as well as the 75th Anniversary badging. On the inside, buyers will be treated to features such as embossed '1941'
heated leather seats in black or saddle brown and tangerine, as well as bronze accents on the grab handles and air vents. Satellite navigation is also standard, as is an Alpine sound system. A Jeep spokesperson said: "It is a tradition to celebrate key anniversaries, or the conquering of inaccessible places, with special editions." The Wrangler 75th Anniversary edition is on sale now, with 85 examples coming to the UK. Prices start at £34,765 for the two-door 2.8-litre CRD automatic, rising to £36,435 for the four-door 3.6-litre V6 automatic.

Thinking of buying a new car?
T
HE process of buying a new car is often an exciting one, considering you will likely get the opportunity to specify every little detail, down to the floor mats, yourself. That being said, purchasing a new set of wheels is also likely to be one of the most expensive purchases you will make, next to buying a new house. It therefore pays to ask yourself what you want out of your new car, what your options are, and what sort of money you're prepared to spend. What is your budget? This should be the most important question you ask yourself. You don't want to end up in a situation where you can't afford to keep your car on the road, or pay the instalments on the car's finance plan. Before even looking at a new car, sit down and work out what you can realistically spend acquiring one. Remember, you shouldn't only factor in the cost to buy the car itself; things like insurance, petrol and tax all need to be taken into consideration.
Will it suit your needs? Once you're clued up on how much you can actually spend, you will need to decide on a shortlist. Part of this will be identifying a type of car which will be capable of keeping up with your lifestyle needs. What will the car be used for on a daily basis? Will it be a school-run machine packed to the brim with kids, or a Sunday driver that is only taken out for a spin on the weekends? Remember, while a small, sporty convertible may sound like an appealing idea, if you need to ship multiple children to and from school, friends' houses and sports practice, it might not be such a wise decision. How much do cars like the one you want sell for further down the line? No one likes depreciation. It's a thorn in the side of anyone who has forked out large sums of their hard-earned cash to purchase a new motor for themselves, and is therefore a seriously impor tant consideration. Certain cars lose their value more quickly than others, so it pays to do a bit of
research into this. Premium cars may cost more to purchase upfront than their cheaper equivalents, but they tend to hold their value better too. You will also need to think about what options you specify, as these will not only increase the cost of the car, they can also affect resale value. Leather seats might be a nice thing to have, but they aren't really expected on something like a cheap city car - so will only leave you out of pocket in the long run. Where are you buying your car from? Buying from a franchised dealer will often mean you get decent aftersales support, as well as assistance from knowledgeable staff. However, it might also expose you to pushy salespeople vying to meet their targets by offering you extras you may not need. Make sure you know what you want before going down this route. Brokers can help take the stress out of purchasing a new car, especially if you don't care too much about the specification or optional extras that come with a car. Bear in mind, though, that you may not be able to see the car in person, and you won't receive the same advice as you would going through a dealer. Buying online is another option, and it's often a good way of seeing what your options are in terms of price. As with brokers, however, you may not be able to view the car in the metal or give it a test drive before purchase.

Do dogs and cats get hayfever?
A
T last summer has arrived and we can all bask in the warmth, long walks and wonders of the Welsh countryside. My veterinary year often revolves around dealing with the problems with seasonal associations and at this time of year one example is the so-called itchy season. Itching (we call it pruritus) is probably one of the commonest presenting complaints in my consulting day. One of the commonest causes is atopy - a disorder that causes the body to over react to environmental allergens. Although we
“A caring, friendly, professional vets”
rarely see typical human-like hayfever signs of runny nose and sneezing, our dogs suffer the equivalent as a combination of symptoms that cause dramatic itching specifically tingly feet, irritated armpits and hot itchy ears. Treating these allergic conditions is challenging because there simply is no cure. Control is the goal to therapy and we use a combination of medication, shampoos, spot-ons to provide relief. New modern medications allow us to avoid some of the steroids that had side effects away from the intended target of the skin. However the issue is complex and definitely needs a good understanding between your vet and your pet’s problem. In reality, most animals require a bespoke plan as there is so much variation in response and combination therapy is almost always necessary. Cats get skin problems but often just groom a lot rather than the obvious scratching a dog will perform. By far the
commonest causes of skin problems in cats are fleas and mites. Summer associates parasites are best prevented rather than treated so using the spot-ons and collars that are now so effective can help cats with bald backs and scabby skin. As ever, if you are concerned come see us. Itching is not nice to put up with and early intervention is the key to good control. Abbey Vets

NNIE Plaskett, from specialist insurance broker Towergate, says: "It's vital home owners are aware that homes left empty for an extended period of time can leave them exposed to a number of risks and threats - including burglary, theft, squatting, vandalism and water damage. "If your home is going to be left vacant for a longer period, it's crucial you check your home insurance policy and contact your insurer if you are unsure - often standard policies are only valid for up to a month." Here are some tips from Towergate for

keeping your home safe while you're away: ● Make sure your home is regularly inspected - perhaps ask family, friends or neighbours to check it. ● Make the property look occupied to minimise interest by thieves or vandals. Cancel existing deliveries such as milk or newspapers. Consider having lights on timers so they come on in the evening and perhaps park a car on the drive - maybe a friend's or a neighbour's. ● Protection against forcible entry through external doors and windows is essential. Insurers will often only insure against forcible entry.

fencing services
Wood treatment is a hot topic, and one local, family run company is telling you about their procedures of effectively treating and selling timber for fencing. Woodland Services, based on Hereford Road, Abergavenny, has been trading for over 50 years with the current owners entering their fourth year in the business and are ensuring the quality continues. They specialise in providing quality, locally sourced and appropriately treated wood for both agricultural and domestic use, and pride themselves on their endeavour to bring their treatment process as up to date as possible with a lot of money invested into their programme for machinery and tools. Tracey O’Leary from Woodland Services said, “Before we treat our timber in house in our fully upgraded, computerised treatment plant we ensure that the wood is dried to 28% or less moisture content. It is then pressure treated soil or fresh water contact using Koppers Celcure AC500 – giving it a 15

year life. This whole process is computer linked and closely monitored by our treatment suppliers Koppers who support the projected 15 year life of the product. “Even though certain chemicals have been removed from the treatment solution by EU legislation in the past, this means that it is very important that the wood is dried to 28% or less moisture content then the penetration and the treatment will be as effective as it was prior to the change, and here at Woodland Services we ensure this procedure is adhered to.” Tracey has spoken about her experience with peoples concerned about the treatment of wood, and wants to let the people of the local area know that at Woodland Services they can get properly treated wood from them for a great price. A high percentage of our business is repeat business which makes it even more important that we maintain the quality of our treatment process. Tracey said, “I go to market on
Wednesdays and I hear a lot of peoples concerns about timber treatment, so we wanted to show that we have put a lot of time, money and expertise into our treatment programme and assure people that our service is safe and effective.” They also put a lot of emphasis on locally sourcing their timber that they prepare and treat, to go back to the local community. Tracey said, “When dealing with natural resources, it is important to stay as local as you can, and by using local businesses in our supply chain it benefits the whole community.”
So to find out more about their work, contact Woodland Services (Abergavenny) Ltd on 01873 855431 or email Tracey on tracey@woodland-sa.co.uk.
