5 Tips for adding value to your home

1. If you've outgrown your home and

you can make it bigger by building an extension or converting the loft, cellar or garage, doing the work is often more economical than moving and gives you an opportunity to create space tailored to your needs. However, you need to be careful not to enlarge your home in the wrong way. You'll add most value if everything's in proportion - for example, the right number of bedrooms to bathrooms (aim for at least one bathroom to three bedrooms) and enough living space for the number of bedrooms.

3.

2. Lofts are often straightforward to

These days, smaller, separate rooms are out and larger, open-plan rooms are in - as far as most of us are concerned. However, totally openplan space isn't necessarily the best way to add value, or live day to day, especially if you have children. Openplan kitchen-diners/family rooms are now extremely popular, but also having a separate, more formal sitting room works well for many families. Some families prefer to have a separate playroom or den for the kids, so the mess is self-contained.

convert, especially if the work can be done under your home's permitted development rights, meaning that planning permission isn't required. Loft conversions usually add most value when turned into a suite with a main bedroom, bathroom or shower room and even, if there's enough space, a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room. If planning laws allow, maximising the space by adding a full-width dormer window and altering the side roof so it goes from sloped to 'straight' (when viewed from the front or back) makes for a larger and more valuable loft conversion.

4.

One of the best ways to create an open-plan kitchen-diner/family room is to add a ground-floor extension (which can also often be done under your home's permitted development rights) to enlarge the existing kitchen and any rooms you're combining it with, such as a separate dining room. Add a wall of bi-fold doors leading out to the garden to give a wonderful feeling of inside-outside space and you have a valuable addition to your home.

OU R UT I M AT E

If enlarging the kitchen isn't an option, modernising a dated kitchen is one of the best things you can do. Kitchens and bathrooms are the rooms that most sell homes because replacing them is expensive and disruptive, and while you don't have to spend a fortune to get a good look, any money spent is usually a good investment in these key rooms.

ight up DIY projects in these dark evenings with the AE0183 Rechargeable LED Work Light (£19.99, Screwfix). This sturdy metal light is cordless (with a three-hour battery life), so you can carry it from job to job without having to find somewhere to plug it in. The built-in 10W LED bulb gives off masses of light, but it doesn't make the casing or glass hot - non-LED work lights get extremely hot and so can be dangerous. The AE0183 has a fully adjustable head and a comfy-grip handle, and comes with two chargers - one for a socket and one for a car cigarette lighter - so there's no excuse for not keeping it charged.

How to choose your new hot water cylinder

● Being able to supply multiple outlets (taps, baths, showers, etc) is one of the main benefits of a cylinderbased hot-water system, making cylinders perfectly suited to homes with more than one bathroom. If another member of your household uses a different shower or bath at the same time as you, a cylinder can supply hot water to both without significant loss of pressure or an adverse effect on the temperature. ● Today's cylinders are highly insulated and efficient, and are available in a variety of sizes to suit your household - your installer should be able to advise you on the right size. If you're

replacing an existing cylinder and have added to your household's hotwater needs, perhaps by expanding your family or adding outlets, you may need a cylinder with a larger capacity. The new cylinder will usually be taller than the old one and may have a larger diameter to meet current insulation requirements, but it won't need a separate insulation jacket. There is often no need to replace the boiler at the same time, unless it's old and inefficient. Only system and regular boilers work with cylinders, so if you currently have a combi boiler and want a cylinder, the boiler will have to be changed. Cylinders usually have an immersion heater, which can be used to heat water if the boiler's turned off or out of action. ● Choose from a vented/openvented cylinder (with a regular boiler), where water for the cylinder is drawn from a cold-water tank, or an unvented cylinder (with a system boiler), where the system is sealed and water is drawn at mains pressure. If you have a vented heating system, changing to an unvented system will do away with the need for water tanks and the worry associated with open water storage. It may also increase the water pressure.

● When deciding which cylinder to buy, look at the heat-loss figure (how long the cylinder takes to cool down), the reheat time (how long the cylinder takes to reheat after hot water is drawn off ) and the insulation thickness. These figures should be supplied by the manufacturer and so shouldn't be difficult to find and compare - you may find that spending a bit more on a cylinder will give you greater savings in the longer term. Cylinders are now supplied with an energy-efficiency label that provides a rating for the cylinder, which is similar to the labels you see on fridges, freezers and washing machines, etc. ● If you have solar thermal (waterheating) panels or are thinking of installing them, go for a cylinder with two heat exchanger coilers (twin coil). One coil is connected to a boiler (or heat pump) and the other can be connected to solar thermal panels to store any solar gain collected during the day. If you don't have or want solar thermal panels, a single-coil cylinder is fine - this is designed to be connected to just one heat source, usually a boiler.

What you need to know about electric underfloor heating

A

N electric underfloor heating system (also known as a dry system) radiates heat through a series of wires in the floor. It's either a mat, which is best for large spaces because it can be rolled out to cover an entire floor, or a cable/loose-fit system (individual wires). This is a flexible solution for smaller and awkwardly shaped rooms, such as bathrooms, where there's no need to heat the floor under the basin and bath. Heating mats should be laid on a finished subfloor, such as plywood, and encased in a flexible levelling compound or flexible tile adhesive, while cable/loose-fit systems should be encased in the finishing screed of a concrete floor. One of the benefits of underfloor heating is that there's more free wall space than with radiators. Another benefit is that the room is heated more evenly - with radiators, you get cold spots. Radiant heat (produced by underfloor heating) is the most efficient form of heat distribution, and airborne dust is greatly reduced, which is good for allergy sufferers. Underfloor heating works at a lower temperature to radiators, so a well-insulated home is vital to prevent heat loss (see below). Electric underfloor systems can work with most types of floor covering (check when you buy if in doubt), from carpet, vinyl and wood, to ceramic tiles and natural stone, but it's important to get the right wattage. A 100W mat can be used to take the chill off cold floor tiles, while a 150W mat can be used as a primary heating

source, providing adequate insulation is in place. For areas of high heat loss, such as conservatories, a 200W mat is needed. You can adjust the temperature easily from a thermostat (a smart thermostat can be controlled by an app) and independently of your home's central heating system - electric

underfloor heating is ideal for warming a cold bathroom floor when the central heating's off. A poorly insulated home loses lots of heat, reducing the effectiveness of any underfloor heating system. If the floor isn't insulated sufficiently, for example, the underfloor heating will heat the earth below, as well as the room above, which no one wants. Whether you're fitting an electric or wet underfloor system, ensure you insulate under the heating elements sufficiently, and insulate elsewhere in the home as much as possible to get maximum benefit.

Santa’s On His Way!

C

ROWNED ‘Best Garden Centre in Wales and West’ for the past five consecutive years, this combined Garden Centre, Farm Shop and Restaurant certainly put on an impressive show at Christmas time. Incorporating a ‘Christmas Carol’ theme this year the experience offered to children and adults alike is fantastic. A wide range of Christmas gifts, decorations, lighting, artificial and freshly cut trees are displayed beautifully within a journey through scenes from the famous Charles Dickens novel, Christmas Carol. The displays are inspiring and offer an abundance of ideas of how to display your Christmas decorations at home this year. Manager, Katie Eckley said “This year we have put lots of time and effort into making our grotto experience extra special! Our grotto is open to children of all ages and is packed with excitement including Santa’s reindeer and a short winter walk before meeting Santa, having a chat and receiving a suitable toy and delicious sweets! “Santa’s first visit to the garden centre this year is during our Santa’s Grand Arrival event on Friday 25th November. The event was a great success the past two years and is the perfect way to start the festive sea-

son when Santa arrives on his sleigh at 6.30pm. We also have a disco and bouncy castle arranged and our Railway Restaurant will be serving a festive menu until 7.30pm. “Of course adults have not been forgotten and we have some great events planned for them too. Our popular ‘Festive Ladies Night’ is on Thursday 1st December, including bubbly, live music, two course meal and 20% off all Christmas items, gifts, homeware and clothing for one night only!

Booking is required so be sure to visit our website or call us if you would like a table as soon as possible. For more information about The Old Railway Line Garden Centre and upcoming events call 01497 847055 or visit www.oldrailwaylinegc.co.uk

Time to get cosy with soft furnishings D ROPPING temperatures and dark nights mean summer days are gone, but rather than lamenting their passing, focus instead on creating wicked winter rooms. This year, the two 'hot' trends for the season are seductive sanctuary or rustic retreat. You can be purist and opt for one or the other, or simply reflect elements of each in a room - both will conjure instant warmth, comfort and luxury. Those are, of course, the vital ingredients of Hygge (pronounced 'hu-gah'), the Danish word for cosy, peaceful wellbeing which is having a bit of a moment right now. "Hygge can be described as a state of being and of finding joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life," says Johnny Jackson, co-author of The Art Of Hygge: How To Bring Danish Cosiness Into Your Life (Summersdale, £9.99). "Help yourself enjoy it by making your home a sanctuary and a delight to the senses, with soft furnishings made of luxurious fabrics, and it will be a place where you can unwind and feel completely rested. "When it's cold outside, there's nothing lovelier than curling up on a sofa, sitting in front of a flickering fire, or snuggling under a cosy blanket or quilt."

A pared-back setting allows elegant pieces to star and conjures a sophisticated tranquil space, where distracting clutter's banished. "As the temperature drops, we spend more time indoors and hanker after intimate spaces for snuggling," says Jenny Gibbs, founder and principal of KLC School of Design (www.klc.co.uk). "Neutral schemes are the perfect backdrop for this look and can be layered up with subtle pattern and texture, such as wool, velvet, mohair, tweed or herringbone. Cushions and throws on chairs and

Step into Christmas

T

HIS years festivities will soon be upon us, and that means selecting the right beverages to see you through the celebrations. Planning what to drink on Christmas Day can be quite daunting, especially if one of you loves an ice cold beer, and the other red wine. But when you're piling up the plate with so many sweet and savoury flavours, the great news is there's no wrong or right with accompanying drinks. At the end of the day, it's simply a matter of taste and a great excuse to treat yourself to some old

favourites, and try some new styles. "The festive season is a great time to experiment with new flavours and truly experience the versatility of beer," says Steve Livens, beer sommelier (www.beerforthat.com/explorer). "With such a variety of styles available, from a light and refreshing ale, to a dark creamy stout, there is a beer perfectly suited to every dish served up this Christmas period." Indeed, whether you're fond of a malty beer with your turkey or a vintage ale with the cheeseboard, There's A Beer For That's website has some interesting matches. A feast of ideas can also be found in Lidl, with the chance to drink well-made wines from famous regions at reasonable prices. "Christmas is the perfect time of year to try new wines and deviate from the old favourites," says Ben Hulme, head of beers and wines, Lidl. "Although not traditional for every course, you can find reds to suit every plate and every palate." To help you pick the best, follow our experts' guide to what to drink with traditional Christmas fare...

PARTY NIBBLES AND CHEESES

● Fuller's Vintage Ale (£4.99, 8.5% abv, www.waitrose.com) The malt in the ale combined with the cinnamon, pineapple and marmalade notes rests easily against a fuller-flavoured mature cheddar, making it a delicious combination.

Get the drinks in ● Amarone della Valpolicella, 2012 (£12.49, Lidl) One of Italy's most popular wines, this delicious red is warming and well-balanced, with hints of cherry and chocolate.

TURKEY AND ALL THE TRIMMINGS

● Sharp's Doom Bar (£1.79, 4.3% abv, www.tesco.com) Amber in colour, this British-born beer infuses the flavours of orange and caramel to create a lasting taste sensation. The malts used offer a subtle sweetness and the roasted notes make the flavours a perfect balance to enjoy with turkey. ● Luigi Bosca Single Vineyard Malbec, 2013 (£17.99, Waitrose) Splash out this Christmas and treat your tastebuds to a subtle explosion of ripe plums and juicy cherries, with a slight spicy bite.

GREAT GOOSE

● Grimbergen Double Belgian Beer (£2.39, 6.5% abv, www.beersofeurope.co.uk) The rich, earthy flavours of the bird require a beer with some heft. The bold, roasted flavours complement those of the meat. With sweetness balanced by pepper, it will lift any seasoning, and cleanse the palate. ● Cimarosa Malbec Reserva Privada, 2013 (£4.99, Lidl) Malbec's

success in Argentina means it's now planted in Chile too. Deep and youthful, with rich toasty oak, this is a pleasing, flavoursome style that will benefit if served from a carafe. ● Villa Blanche Pinot Noir, 2014 (£8.99, www.waitrose.com) An elegant drop that's bursting with blackcurrants and cherries, with a floral minty finish.

MINCE PIES AND PUD

● St Peter's Brewery Cream Stout (£3.32, 6% abv, www.uvinum.co.uk, or a box of eight for £17, www.stpetersbrewery.co.uk) This beer boasts a bittersweet taste created by the dried fruit and chocolate notes, while the creaminess brings all the flavours together. ● Royal Tokaji 5 Puttonyos, 2013 (£18.99, Lidl) A young Tokaji, but with scents of tangy marmalade and even a hint of creme brulee, this sweet drop is perfectly paired with a mince pie.

to the great outdoors!

Ingredients

2½ cups all purpose flour ¾ cups sugar, divided 1 cup butter, cubed (and cold) 1 tsp almond extract zest of 1 orange ½ cup dried cranberries (Craisins) additional sugar to coat cookies before baking if desired

Instructions

1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. 2. Combine cranberries and ¼ cup of sugar in a food processor and process just until the cranberries are broken down into smaller pieces. Set aside. 3. Combine flour and remaining sugar in a large bowl. 4. Use a pastry blender to cut in butter. You want very fine crumbs.

7. Shape dough into a log about two inches in a diameter and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for two hours or up to 72 hours. 8. Preheat oven to 325F. 9. Cut slices of cookie dough about ¼ inch thick. 10. Place about a half a cup of sugar in a bowl and coat the cookie slices with sugar.

5. Stir in extract, cranberries and sugar mixture, and orange zest.

11. Place cookies on baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or just until cookies are set. Do not over bake. I pull mine at 10 minutes.

6. Use your hands to knead the dough until it comes together and forms a ball. Work the dough JUST until it comes together - you don't want to over-work it.

12. Let cookies cool for several minutes on baking sheet before removing to cooling rack. Let cool completely. Store in airtight container for 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

HOCOLATE Turtle Apple Slices are thick slices of apples covered in melted chocolate, drizzled with caramel and topped with nuts.

Instructions 1. Slice apples into 1/2" pieces. With a knife make a little slit in the bottom of each apple slice to make it easier to insert a popsicle stick. 2. Melt chips in the microwave on high for about 2 minutes.* Stir in coconut oil until smooth. Dip apple slices in chocolate and place on parchment lined cookie sheet. 3. Place caramels in microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for 4560 seconds.* Do NOT overheat. Stir until smooth. Drizzle melted caramel over chocolate and sprinkle with nuts. 4. Refrigerate for about 1 hour. Serve and enjoy immediately. Apples are best the first day. Store in refrigerator.

Step into Christmas

'T

IS the season to be merry, but make sure your celebrations go without a hitch or a trip to A&E, with Ella Walker's guide to staying safe this Christmas As you unbox your baubles in December and untangle your fairy lights for the umpteenth time, bear in mind that many of us will have an accident while hanging decorations this year. A sobering thought given that Christmas is the season to be merry and have a drink or two (or three). But, warns the NHS, it's also a time fraught with stress and worry, which can spill over and cause accidents. Here are some top festive accidents you should be aware of - and avoid...

CUT IT OUT

Ah scissors, that old menace. They're sharp, remember?! Kennedy adds: "When wrapping presents, sit at the table with your paper, tape and scissors close by, to prevent twisting the spine."

BOOZE CRUISE

Yep, Buck's Fizz in the morning, wine all day, Bailey's in the evening - it all adds up, leaving you less aware of your surroundings and more prone to trips, slips and uncomfortable outbursts. Moderation should be your keyword for the big day.

HEELY BAD LUCK

Paul Kennedy, senior physiotherapist at Nuffield Health, says "If you're not used to them, try to spend as little time in high heels as possible, as this causes your pelvis to tilt and places unnecessary strain on the lower back. Limit wearing them to a couple of hours at a time and always wear flats to and from a party or event."

DECKED OUT

According to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), 1,000 of us a year hurt ourselves while hanging decorations. Beware the baubles!

ICE AND EASY

TOTALLY SHOCKING

Kennedy says: "Make sure you take extra care and wear sensible shoes if you're rushing about, especially during icy and snowy conditions or after you've had a mulled wine and are more likely to slip or injure yourself."

If you manage to successfully hang your fairy lights without coming a cropper on a ladder, don't go getting electrocuted. Test your lights for faults before hanging them, just to be on the safe side.

STAIRFALL

In a hurry to open your presents? Don't go head over heels in your mad dash to unwrap them, and then don't pile them up on the stairs after you've found out. They'll just trip someone else up, and a broken neck is not a great present, ever.

26th November -3rd

HELL'S KITCHEN

Online tickets available for this very special 2016 Christmas event through our website:

WATCH YOUR BACK

Kennedy says: "When carrying large bags of shopping or presents, spread the load to prevent injuring your back. Carry bags in each hand, make multiple trips to the car and get your food shop delivered to your door."

Christmas dinner is a big deal, but so is lacerating your fingers when carving the turkey, or burning your forearms when rushing to get the Yorkshire's out of the oven. Take it slow, don't let children in the kitchen and stay alert (i.e. go easy on the chef's obligatory tipple).

January 2017

CANDLE CARE

It's a fact that people are 50% more likely to die in a house fire over Christmas than at any other time of year. Keep candles away from curtains, Christmas trees and decorations, and always make sure you blow them out properly when you've finished using them.

The celebration of this Crickhowell Charity’s tenth anniversary recently raised a contribution of £1,600 for Tenovus Cancer Care during a gala dinner at the Manor Hotel. Being announced a winner in the Charity/Social Enterprise category of the Powys Business Awards, was further cause for celebration. The run up to Christmas is always a popular time to visit the Centre and the oriel CRiC gallery. The staff and volunteers are looking forward to welcoming gallery friends old and new to a mulled drink and mince pies from midday onwards on Saturday 19 November. Suzette Pratten explained, “This is our opportunity not only to extend warm hospitality to new visitors in a festive atmosphere, but to thank our many gallery friends for their support during the past year.”

She added, “’Christmas at CRiC’ just gets better every year! Our new space, the CRiC Studio will be festooned with ‘Gifts Galore’ from 28 November and the retail area downstairs in CRiC will offer a selection of local delicacies and unusual gifts. CRiC’s popular community tree decorating competition in the Centre was so popular last year that it will once again take place on the evening of 1 December when Crickhowell puts its best foot forward with late night opening. Have a crafty christmas this year Tea Light Snowman Ornaments

T

- by Debbie Chapman

HESE tea light snowman ornaments are really easy to make and they look adorable! You can buy most of the materials from the pound store, so it’s a great inexpensive craft project.

Here’s what you’ll need

M onmo uthshire Turkeys Traditionally prepared

Organic Bronze Turkeys to order for Christmas call: 01291 691 988

Battery operated tea lights A Black Sharpie Red Ribbon Red Pipe Cleaners Red Pom Poms Black Felt Orange Sharpie Glue Gun

Instructions

1. Use the black Sharpie to draw a simple face onto the tea light. You can use googly eyes if you want, but I preferred the look of the black dots. 2. Cut a piece of red pipe cleaner to approximately 2.5 long. Curve it around the tea light and then add a small line of hot glue on both ends to hold it in place. Don’t glue it the entire way around because you’ll need to be able to slide the ribbon under the pipe cleaner later.

3. Add a generous dab of hot glue where the ears would be and add the pom poms. Now your snowman has ear muffs! 4. Cut out a piece of ribbon to be approximately 4.5 long. Then cross it over itself and add a small dab of hot glue to hold it together. I found this was the best way to make the ribbon look like a scarf. 5. Add a small line of glue to the back of the “scarf” and then glue it to the back of the tea light 6. Cut a piece of the thinner red ribbon to be approximately 11 long and then slide it under the pipe cleaner. Then tie a tiny knot in the ribbon to keep it together. 7. The tea light flame is white when it’s turned off so you’ll probably want to colour it orange with a marker to make it look like a carrot, even when the tea light is turned off. 8. For the second snowman you need to cut a strip of black felt to be approximately 1-1/4” wide. Then glue the hat together with some hot glue 9. Since there’s no pipe cleaner to hold it in place on this one, you’ll need to glue the ribbon right to the tea light. Add a generous dab of hot glue to the tea light, add the ribbon, and then add another generous dab of hot glue, and it should keep it all in place.

Nobody does it better than Bublé ALBUM OF THE WEEK MICHAEL BUBLÉ NOBODY BUT ME

M

ICHAEL Bublé has been a busy man. In between performing at this year's Apple Music Festival and filming a one-off TV special for the BBC, the Canadian crooner - whose Christmas album is a festive tradition as much as mulled wine and mince pies - returns with his seventh LP, Nobody But Me, which sees him taking on production duties for the first time. While it may have meant months of sleepless nights for the 41year-old father-of-two, the result, which comes three years after 2013's To Be Loved, is a very slick album consisting of three new tracks and nine jazz covers. Bublé's smooth vocals seduce listeners with his rendition of Nina Simone's My Baby Just Cares For Me and My Kind Of Girl, made famous by

TAURUS

Frank Sinatra and Count Basie, as well as Matt Monro, but the original songs, such as the title track featuring The Roots rapper Tariq 'Black Thought' Trotter and Someday with Meghan Trainor (co-written by her and One Direction's Harry Styles), are also toe-tapping highlights. 8/10 (Review by Shereen Low)

Time to back up on back pain?

I

T can be natural for people with persistent back pain to avoid being active, for fear of making things worse, but often, this can be counter-productive. As Dr Grahame Brown, a consultant in persistent musculoskeletal pain, and David Rogers, a physiotherapist who specialises in spinal pain, explain, tissue and muscle injuries heal within weeks, and even fractures usually get better within a few months - and so injuries alone don't give us the full picture, when it comes to chronic back pain. While it may feel hopeless when pain won't let up, as the authors stress: "Persistent pain is not necessarily permanent and previous function can be restored."

Keen to 'unlock' your troublesome back pain? Here are some of David Rogers and Dr Grahame Brown's top tips...

● When back pain persists for more than a few months and various treatments have had limited benefits, research suggests that focusing less on getting rid of the pain and more on getting back to meaningful activities leads to better functioning and quality of life, and less pain. ● Do activity gradually and expect to feel worse initially - this is normal. Don't overdo it, and review your plan weekly. ● Start simple, low-level cardiovascular, strengthening and stretching exercises, building up gradually.

● Family conflict and stress can affect recovery and should be resolved if possible. ● Staying in work is likely to help your back, not only because of potentially moving more, but also because research shows having a purposeful role leads to people having fewer problems with daily activities.

RELAX IN COMFORT THIS AUTUMN

● While medication can be beneficial, as it can help people with persistent back pain get moving, Rogers and Brown say it can sometimes prove counter-productive and make recovery more difficult, so being aware of the potential pitfalls of medication is important. Always discuss changing medication with your doctor. ● Prioritise sleep, take regular breaks from what you do during the day, and relax through breathing exercises, mindfulness or hobbies. Relaxing can stimulate natural analgesics. ● Be aware that painful flare-ups are very unlikely to be caused by damage to the spine. Don't let a flare-up make you much more cautious, thus slowing overall recovery. ● Identify flare-up triggers, which aren't necessarily physical movement but can be linked to stress, feelings or even the environment.

Our NEW Christmas Menu

Healthy snacking needn't be a hard nut to crack

I

T can be hard to get through the day without a snack or two, and all too often those snacks come in the unhealthy form of biscuits, cakes or crisps. A handful of nuts, however, could curb those snack-cravings - and boost your health at the same time. Not only will their concentrated protein content help you feel fuller for longer, but they could protect you from a whole host of illnesses. A new study has found that patients with prostate cancer who consumed nuts five or more times a week after diagnosis, had a 34% lower rate of mortality than those who ate nuts less than once a month. And last year, a Dutch study found a link between daily nut consumption and a reduced chance of dying from several chronic diseases, including cancer and heart disease. SUPER NUTS? Nuts are packed with protein, fibre and important vitamins and minerals, including - in differing proportions depending on the type of nut - calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, vitamin E and B vitamins and selenium, the powerful antioxidant thought to help fight cancer, and which may also play a role in combating infertility, dementia and low thyroid function. Nuts have a high fat content, but it's the 'healthy' type - unsaturated - which is thought to help lower 'bad' LDL cholesterol levels. Of course, not all nuts are created equal - a packet of roasted, salted nuts is not the

same 'healthy snack' as some plain, raw almonds, for example, and d ieticians advise avoiding nuts that are packaged, salted or roasted in oil or honey; instead, eat them raw or dry-roasted. HEARTY STUFF Many studies have identified a link between eating nuts and reduced risk of cardiovascular problems. Harvard research found men who ate nuts at least twice a week over a year had a 47% lower risk of sudden cardiac death and a 30% lower risk of dying from all types of coronary artery disease. Plus, previous Harvard research involving more than 86,000 women found that over a 14-year period, those who ate at least 5oz of nuts per week were 35% less likely to suffer heart attacks than women who ate less than 1oz a month. An analysis of other risk factors, such as diet, lifestyle and existing health conditions, including blood pressure, cholesterol and family history, showed the protective power of nuts couldn't be explained away. One theory is that the beneficial effect on cardiovascular health may be linked to the effect nuts have on cholesterol - researchers in Canada compared three lowfat vegetarian diets and found that while they all produced lower cholesterol levels, the diet that contained 2.2oz of nuts a day reduced 'bad' LDL cholesterol by 30%. It's also thought that nuts lower insulin resistance, so they help reduce the incidence of diabetes and inflammation.

Flu season is here again

T

HEY may share some similar symptoms like a sore throat, runny or congested nose and headache - but the flu and colds are two different things, and neither is flu just a really 'bad cold'. Far more than just a 'bad cold', the flu can leave you feeling pretty wretched. While a cold can bring on aching limbs, headaches, general exhaustion and make you feel pretty run down, flu is generally much more severe; you'll probably struggle to get out of bed and there's often a fever as well. For some people, flu can be quite debilitating and possibly lead to serious complications (the World Health Organisation estimates that, globally, flu causes up to half a million deaths each year), which is why it's a good idea to be clued up about the vaccines available. The NHS offers flu jabs for free to certain groups, while others not eligible can opt to pay for a vaccine. Unsure whether you need one? Read on...

IS FLU SERIOUS?

If you're generally in good health, you'll usually recover naturally from flu after a week or so, and some sensible rest, painkillers, plenty of fluids and keeping warm all help. However, flu can be very serious for those less able to fight off or cope with the virus, particularly the vulnerable, elderly and those with pre-existing health problems. Complications can arise, including a worsening of any ongoing health conditions, such as asthma and diabetes.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A FREE FLU JAB?

The NHS provides free flu jabs for people deemed more at-risk from flu. As well as the over-65s, and those with long-term health conditions (particularly long-term heart or respiratory diseases), those recommended to receive a jab also include people who've had a stroke, people on medication that may affect their immune system, and also people who are a main carer for an older or disabled person. Pregnant women are also eligible for a free jab, in order to protect their own health and that of their baby. If you're unsure or concerned about your own flu risk, speak to your GP or pop into a Boots Pharmacy or LloydsPharmacy to ask for advice (pharmacists can also advise whether you are eligible for the free NHS jab, and Boots Pharmacies and LloydsPharmacy are both among the pharmacies that can deliver the NHS vaccines). Nasal spray flu vaccines are also available for young children.

I HAD A JAB LAST YEAR - DO I NEED ANOTHER?

Yes - because flu viruses are constantly mutating, so new vaccines are developed each season. "With many illnesses, one jab will keep you immunised for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, the flu virus is very clever and constantly changes to build up a resistance to the vaccines we produce," explains Dr Simon. "That's why you need to have a new flu jab every year to stay one step ahead.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

T is a sad fact of life that many elderly and disabled people in our community are having to find their own domestic support due to local authority budget cuts. It is though, sometimes difficult to know where to turn to for this support and help. Look no further! Diamond Home Support has brought back the Home Help. Whether it be domestic support, meal preparation, shopping or simply someone to chat to and brighten up your day we can help. Our Home Assist Service aims to provide vital support for the elderly and less able in a friendly, caring and professional manner. All of our workers are thoroughly vetted and are chosen specifically for their personality, ethos and attitude. They are all paid well and are encouraged to be proactive and to “go the extra mile”. Loss of independence can be humiliating and frustrating, and that first vital step of admitting that you can no longer cope alone is sometimes very difficult.

We therefore try to make the experience as friendly and personal as possible. All potential clients are visited in their own homes so that we can talk them through the service, explain how things work and answer any questions which they may have. Relatives need not be concerned that their family members will be pushed into signing up for our services if they are unsure as to whether or not it is right for them. We respect the fact that each individual, however old, frail or disabled, has the right to consider the pros and cons of our services before signing on the dotted line and, to this end, we are happy to visit more than once should that be necessary. We are also happy for family members to be present at this initial meeting; in fact, we positively encourage it. We guarantee ongoing support; are always available to discuss any problems, issues or concerns and will do our utmost to resolve these in the best way possible.

BMW has unveiled the limited-run M4 DTM Champion Edition

The Government £35m schemes to encourage the uptake of more environmentally friendly 'ultra-low-emission vehicles'

I

O

NLY 200 examples of the modified M4 will be produced, and will cost buyers 148,500 Euros (£134,136). Compared with the regular M4, the DTM Champion Edition straight-six engine features a power output that has been increased by 68bhp to 492bhp, while torque has been upped to 600Nm, a gain of 50Nm. This jump in power allows the car to sprint from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, before hitting a limited top speed of

190mph. BMW claims it can achieve a fuel consumption figure of 33.2mpg on the combined cycle, while CO2 emissions stand at 199g/km. Similar to the BMW M4 GTS, the DTM Champion Edition calls upon water injection technology, which helps to cool the engine's combustion chambers, raising its thermally related performance limits in the process. The handling dynamics of the car have also been improved in an attempt to make the DTM Champion Edition a properly track-focused car.

NCLUDED in the funding is a £20 million competition designed to help councils introduce charging points for electric taxis and up to £10 million of funding for charging points near workplaces and houses with no off-street parking. Smaller schemes will include £2 million of grants for organisations to use hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and a £3.75 million scheme to encourage the use of zero-emission motorcycles and scooters. The initiatives come as part of the Government's pledge to invest £600 million in ultra-low-emission vehicles by 2020. Transport Minister John Hayes said: "No matter what mode of transport you need - a scooter to get to work, a car or a van to run your business - we are here to help you do it with zero emissions. "The number of ultra-low-emission vehicles on our roads are at record levels and new registrations have risen by 250% in just over two years. We are committing £35 million to help install new charge points and offer new grants as we aim for nearly all cars and vans on our roads to be zero emission by 2050."

From filling your fuel tank, to filling your wallet to go on holiday, here's a look at how changes in the value of the pound could affect you: Will my car be more expensive to run? Motoring organisations have warned drivers to expect to be hit by rising fuel prices. The RAC has said the recent falls in the value of the pound will make the wholesale price of fuel go up. Will it affect the housing market? Some experts have suggested a lower value pound could tempt more overseas investors into the UK property market, as the cost of

The recent "Marmitegate" dispute involving Tesco and Unilever has prompted much speculation about the future direction of prices for shoppers. Tesco momentarily grappled with a shortage of store cupboard staples during the incident, before the situation was successfully resolved.

KING KNOWLEDGE IS

Wood treatment is a hot topic, and one local, family run company is telling you about their procedures of effectively treating and selling timber for fencing. Woodland Services, based on Hereford Road, Abergavenny, has been trading for over 50 years with the current owners entering their fourth year in the business and are ensuring the quality continues. They specialise in providing quality, locally sourced and appropriately treated wood for both agricultural and domestic use, and pride themselves on their endeavour to bring their treatment process as up to date as possible with a lot of money invested into their programme for machinery and tools. Tracey O’Leary from Woodland Services said, “Before we treat our timber in house in our fully upgraded, computerised treatment plant we ensure that the wood is dried to 28% or less moisture content. It is then pressure treated soil or fresh water contact using Koppers Celcure AC500 – giving it a 15

year life. This whole process is computer linked and closely monitored by our treatment suppliers Koppers who support the projected 15 year life of the product. “Even though certain chemicals have been removed from the treatment solution by EU legislation in the past, this means that it is very important that the wood is dried to 28% or less moisture content then the penetration and the treatment will be as effective as it was prior to the change, and here at Woodland Services we ensure this procedure is adhered to.” Tracey has spoken about her experience with peoples concerned about the treatment of wood, and wants to let the people of the local area know that at Woodland Services they can get properly treated wood from them for a great price. A high percentage of our business is repeat business which makes it even more important that we maintain the quality of our treatment process. Tracey said, “I go to market on

Wednesdays and I hear a lot of peoples concerns about timber treatment, so we wanted to show that we have put a lot of time, money and expertise into our treatment programme and assure people that our service is safe and effective.” They also put a lot of emphasis on locally sourcing their timber that they prepare and treat, to go back to the local community. Tracey said, “When dealing with natural resources, it is important to stay as local as you can, and by using local businesses in our supply chain it benefits the whole community.”

So to find out more about their work, contact Woodland Services (Abergavenny) Ltd on 01873 855431 or email Tracey on tracey@woodland-sa.co.uk.
