Future front covers: The Go Guide is holding a local photo contest. This is your chance for fame and fortune (as long as your idea of fortune doesn’t include $$). Photos should showcase an RGV location, activity, etc. If your photo is selected, you will be contacted via email for follow-up information to be published in the next issue. All entries should be cropped to fit in a 4.25” x 11” space. Budding journalistic talent? Want to be published in our publication? Let us know what your idea is for an editorial and we’ll hear you out. We want to give novice writers a voice! Get in touch through the email address above.
dear READERS: As the new year approaches, I reflect on what the past year has brought. Amongst other accomplishments, I am proud to say that 2012 brought to The Go Guide to the Rio Grande Valley. Inciting a cultural shift was our goal, filling a void that existed in our current local literature and media. This space for information on how to enjoy our cities more, about how to embrace our locally owned businesses and our locally grown food, now has a voice. The Go Guide recognizes that our cities are growing. We see this as new businesses arrive and flourish, new subdivisions break ground, and as enrollment continually increases at our schools. With growth comes more challenges: How do we ensure that we grow up and not only out, with quality not only quantity? Information is key and the path to education, and we do this through the accessibility of information at the hands of the people. Give the people information on what is out there, and more informed decisions will be made. Allow people to become aware of what our cities have to offer, and they will flourish. Information, not overwhelmed by ads and bought ‘articles’. Information that is pertinent about where your nights are spent and where your money is going. Looking for the next famous person on the cover of a magazine? Neither are we. Fame and fortune are exciting, but they’re not the cover stories of our issues. Things happening in our area are our focus, and our commitment to locally owned businesses sets us apart from the rest. This year saw this publication launch and flourish with the help of its readers and the businesses that align their mindsets to ours. We hope that you see our commitment to you, the reader, and bringing you the best version of this publication that we can every month. We bring you your weekend, Rio Grande Valley and every other day too. Be looking for us monthly to keep you up to date on new businesses, events, and exciting news. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you again in 2013! Cheers, Pattie Parker Publisher

SOCIAL WHEN YOU WALK INTO A STARBUCKS COFFEE SHOP IN THE WINTER, IT’S PRETTY DIFFICULT TO IGNORE OR DENY THE CHARM OF THE COFFEE SCENT WAFTING THROUGH THE AIR, THE NOISES OF THE BUSY BARISTAS MAKING THE NEXT DELICIOUS FLAVORED COFFEE, OR THE TRENDY RAY LA MONTAGNE TUNES PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND.

Geatguide Customers are attracted by the high levels of sugars in the Frappuccinos, the beautiful logos and branded paraphernalia, and the ease of the drive through for a morning pick-me-up; but we have to think to ourselves, why Starbucks? Why not another coffee shop? Reporting $11.7 billion in net revenues last year, Starbucks’ profits are proof of the nation’s support of their business. With many small businesses struggling to survive, the question arises: where should we spend our money and why should we continue to invest in big business? If you look around McAllen, you will find several local businesses offering coffee at the same or even lower cost to you, and with more personal customer service and care. Upon a recent visit to Cordoba Café on 10th street, I was presented with more than 6 varieties of coffee to smell before placing my order. In addition to the personalized service, I also learned about the types of coffees that were presented to me: organic and grown in Mexico or South America, with special locations that contributed to the flavors and scents that each coffee provided, the altitude at which the coffees are grown, the surrounding trees and plants that contribute to the flavors, the roasting process and temperatures, as well
as the physical effects of different blends for your body. As I selected a medium roast coffee from Oaxaca with hints of cinnamon and settled to my table, I took in the atmosphere and briefly compared it to that of the conglomerate coffee empire. What is the big deal about Starbucks? It’s just as convenient as Moonbeans, Cordoba Café, or Dali, just to name a few of McAllen’s selections, however it lacks the individuality and charm that these possess. The paintings on the walls at Starbucks are not for sale as they are at your local shops, the music is not live and local like you will find at Jitterz in Mission, and the products displayed are branded rather than truly geared towards customer needs. It is apparent that Starbucks mimics the charm and unique qualities that our local shops provide, but is flattened by the commercial production that the company must keep up with. The quality of your cup of coffee, your experience with the business you spend money with, and the effect of your dollar is much more at a local shop. I can’t tell you that I’ve never had or never will again have a Starbucks Grande Soy Latte, but I can tell you that I think twice before driving towards that direction when a local business is just as close. Every dollar we spend is a small vote. Let our voices be heard.

LEXI CHALEFF - PURPLE GECKO, RED SNAPPER @ DELOREANS
There’s a reason a Peacock’s on 17th street and the hit LMFAO song are both focused on shots. These small concoctions, ranging from different flavors, methods of ‘shooting’ and branded stardom, can be just the right addition of fun and flavor to any night out. We warn however, that the titles and shooting methods could just make or break your night. Now we’re not talking about the hangover the next day, or slurred speech, we’re referring to the reputation you hold at stake when you yell across the bar “Give me two Gorilla Farts”. Shot names themselves can be fun, sexual, or just clever, so how do they reflect on the person ordering them? The spin to a positive or negative effect lies in the balance between the crowd you’re with, the message you’re trying to send, and the confidence you have. If you’re having a guys’ night out, bomb shots might suit your bill just fine. Vegas Bomb, Irish Car Bomb, Jager Bomb and the like provide the two part creation: the shot and the dunking beverage. These shots can give either the ‘serious about our night’ or ‘sloppy’ impression depending on how many in your group manage to keep from spilling the concoction during the shooting process. A safer bet perhaps, and more specific to our area, is tequila. Probably the most reliable and popular shot ordered at the bars in the Rio Grande Valley are the straight shooters: Santo Azul, Patron, Don Julio. In mixed form, for men and women alike, the popular Purple Gecko is hard to beat. With nice color, a salted rim, and a sweeter finish than the straight shot, this concoction is not too feminine, not too strong, and not embarrassing to shout over the bar buzz. Others can pose more tricky situations like the Buttery Nipple or Mind Eraser. What will your date think when this is your selection? Is a Lemon Drop or a Scooby Snack a sweet treat or a let-down for not being racy enough to keep the night alive? Here’s the moment when you might be thinking, “Who cares what other people think?” Now there’s the spirit. No matter what bar you go to this holiday season, as you step up to order your smaller cocktails, feel confident, say the names loud and proud. People might laugh and giggle, people might judge you for your decision, but in reality, it’s all about having fun. We say cheers to that.

THE BREW GURU BY JULIAN YBARRA, ‘BREWONION’ Three a day is what seems to be the national average in the U.S. In Belgium, some researchers have noted that up to nine glasses a day is suitable for the average drinker before negative effects begin to out-weigh the benefits. Though there are many factors that come into play, we will cover the basics on these standards.

Filtration and Pasteurization
Not all beers are created equal…most commercial beer is filtered to strip away any yeast in suspension, this tends to make a somewhat hazy beer appear brighter or much clearer. Pasteurization heats your beer up above 250* to kill off any bacteria and yeast particles primarily to extend the shelf life of a product, much like a can of food on a grocer shelf. Although these beers might be stable on the shelf of your mega-mart, all the health benefits have been scrubbed out. A beer that is “alive” will retain its nutrients and mature in time not only in flavor but also in complexity.

Styles to Look Out For…
Brewing yeast is rich in complex B vitamins, proteins and other beneficial minerals. Brewers yeast is a probiotic organism that aids your body in breaking down nutrients, regulating your digestive system , maintaining your nervous system and helps modulate blood sugar levels. Fresh beer can help to increase the level of HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease the chances of blood clots. Alongside that, they promote the levels of anti-oxidants in the blood stream allowing the cells to carry more oxygen throughout the body, increasing overall muscle activity. Beer is also proven to be a rich source of silicone which builds bone density and relieves symptoms of osteoporosis. Most popular imports tend to be “bottle conditioned”. Also look out for Belgian beers, Trappist beers, German Hefe’s and almost all bottled homebrew offerings. So Cheers to the year of fresh beer!

COURTESY OF JAKE CORTEZ
JAKE “Hello everybody, my name is Britney Spears,” he says to a half empty bar before beginning the song Hotel California. The guitar rings flamenco flair paired with the classic rock tune as the focus in the room changes towards the corner where the famed singer sits. Every Monday and Tuesday night at Santa Fe Cantina, you can find Britney, Lady Gaga, and more singing Flamenco, blues, and roots music to a mellow, laid back crowd. Jake Cortez, talented musician, boasts humor on the microphone, but there are no jokes to be made about the quality of his musicianship. Playing since the age of 3, Cortez has honed his skills to become one of the most well known musicians in the Rio Grande Valley. With steady gigs at Santa Fe Cantina as well as El Divino on Fridays, Cortez makes his mark on the McAllen live music scene as an original musician, playing “only the old stuff…only the good stuff” he comments as he laughs and strums his guitar. The playing seems natural to him, although his nails on his right hand are not, self applied acrylics keep his fingers ready for picking the strings. The music falls out of his hands and into the ears of the lucky crowds that gather to hear him play. Although he plays mostly covers and some original music, it’s actually in between songs where Cortez truly shows his colors, creating unique instrumental melodies that make one song blend into the next without stop, pause, or contrast. Whether you enjoy country, rock, blues, jazz, or Spanish guitar, it’s hard to deny that this musician is a gem in the Rio Grande Valley. If you’ve never had the privilege to hear him play, make sure to make it out to one of his shows this holiday season.

ELECTORAL
EQUALITY BY NATHAN GOWER SCHWARZ On November 6th, 2012, from Minnesota to Maryland, from Maine to Washington, a mixed coalition of voters joined forces in a push for historic victories electorally and the other extremely salient issue to LGBT voters, progressives, and their allies -same-sex marriage. Never before has a state rejected a constitutional amendment to prevent gays from marrying. Now Minnesota has made history and changed that. Never before have voters approved laws allowing same-sex marriage. Now Maryland, Maine and Washington have made history and changed that. Seven openly LGBT candidates also made history in state legislative races across the country, winning seats in states where they will be the first or only out lawmakers, including Florida, West Virginia, North Dakota and Pennsylvania. The wins leave just ten states with no out LGBT lawmakers in their legislatures. In New Hampshire, Stacie Laughton became the first openly transgender candidate elected to a state legislature in the U.S., and the most significant electoral victory came from Wisconsin, where voters elected Tammy Baldwin as the first openly gay U.S. Senator. The cause was given momentum last year when President Obama signed the executive order repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The order, issued and implemented during Obama’s first term, allows LGBT U.S. military service members to serve openly for the first time. Before the election, gay marriage had been approved in six states -- Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont -- through the courts or legislatures. Despite the recent victories, 32 states have altered their constitutions to ban same-sex marriage. So now we are left to wait as the Supreme Court holds hearings on same-sex marriage, including reviewing California’s Proposition 8 and challenging the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (a once dreary prospect because of the court’s composition), but now there is hope for the LGBT community. Now the voters have decided -- instead of the courts -- and given the LGBT community a mandate to continue its crusade for equality.

make a difference:
GET HEALTHY BY LAURA REAGAN-PORRAS
Barbara Storz is our Hidalgo County, Texas A& M AgriLife Extension Service in charge of Horticulture. She and Lebby Salinas, head of the Foodeducation Movement have garnered international attention recently. A British television crew came to the Farmers Market on November 10th to interview the pair on how they are making efforts to educate our community about healthy nutrition. They saw Lebby’s food demonstration with favorite cool season vegetables and other farm fresh products. The film crew witnessed the Pesto Girls of the Good
Samaritan promote their basil pesto. Like our community, Britain is dealing with increasing obesity rates and therefore has interest in seeing how our community is working to help residents get healthy and stay healthy. The Grow’n and Grow Farmers Market is a central component of healthy changes in the upper Rio Grande Valley. Begun in 2008, the market provides organic and locally grown fruits and vegetables every Saturday. The market is easily accessible at Fireman’s Park on the Saturdays posted below. Barbara and Lebby reminded me that even small changes like grabbing a piece of fruit or some sliced vegetables instead of the chips bag, can make a big difference in our health and well-being over time. So, come to the Farmers’ Market and get healthy! The Market at Fireman’s Park will be held on December 1st, 8th, and 15th from 8:30a.m. -11:30a.m.
