MONTHLY PHOTO CONTEST: For future issues, the Go Guide is holding a local photo contest. This is your chance for fame and fortune (as long as your idea of fortune doesn’t include $$). Photos should showcase an RGV location, activity, etc. If your photo is selected, you will be contacted via email for follow-up information to be published in the next issue. All entries should be emailed to thegoguide@ gmail.com and should be cropped to fit in a 4.25” x 11” space.

Hungry? GO EAT at some of our favorite restaurants for a delicious meal. Choose your food genre and explore new flavors. You won’t find these restaurants anywhere but here. It’s beer o’clock every hour listed in our GO DRINK section. Go ahead, get yourself out of the house and meet up with friends at any of our bars listed here. Tap your feet, move those hips, we won’t judge your moves. Go out and enjoy the shows listed in our GO LIVE section. From flamenco to indie, there’s something here to please your ears.
No matter what your preference, there’s a place for you in our GO LGBT section. Whether your looking for a community event or for a night out on the town, you’ll find it here. Get involved in your cities. Farmers markets, fundraisers, city and non-profit events can be found here. Take the family or meet new people when you get there. GO COMMUNITY.
THE DIRECTORY: use in concurrence with our GO MAP found in the middle of the guide to locate all your favorite Valley spots.
dear READERS: Welcome to the October issue of the Rio Grande Valley’s freshest take on publication! If this is your first time reading, allow us to introduce ourselves. We are The Go Guide, and we are dedicated to bringing you monthly, up to date information on what is happening in our cities. In this magazine you will find listings of the Valley’s best locally owned restaurants, bars, live music venues and community events with dates and times for you to check them out. What’s better is this magazine is free to you! We advise keeping it in arm’s reach at all times, just in case you need to check a location, time of a show, or simply have a midafternoon craving for a cocktail. We won’t judge how you put it to use, but we do predict that without it you might feel lost. In fact, the inspiration for this magazine came from this feeling of a missing piece of the RGV puzzle. So much happens in our area that many of us aren’t aware of. Instead of staying in the dark, our goal is to bring to light these things that make our cities worth living in. The Go Guide reflects the same values of the Rio Grande Valley in terms of family, togetherness, and giving back to the area from which we came. In this issue’s editorials, you will find these themes throughout. We strongly value the integrity of a business, the ability to trust in the quality and consistency of the products you receive, and the reassurance that the money you spend finds its way back into the community. The businesses that we’ve listed for you are, in our opinion, among those that reflect these qualities. We as well, strive to be this type of business for you. Don’t worry, Valley; we will bring you the best version of our magazine that we can, every month. Get excited: another issue is already in the works. Cheers, Pattie Parker Publisher

If you’ve lived in McAllen long, and you enjoy good food, you have hopefully been to Mama’s Pizzeria and experienced Madeline Scalese’s family run business. Since 2007, Mama’s has been serving up daily its favorite recipes for pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and more. Whether you eat outside on their newly remodeled patio, inside to watch the game, or take a pizza to go, what you eat will be delicious and made in house by someone in the family.
WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, YOU CAN GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL BE SERVED WITH A SMILE, IT IS MADE WITH LOVE, AND IT WILL SATISFY YOUR TASTE BUDS. If you haven’t been, make sure and look for it as you drive down 10th street between Business 83 and Hackberry Ave. With the patio lit up at night and the billboard broadcasting catchy messages like “Save a taco, eat a pizza,” it’s hard to miss. The inside of the restaurant reflects the feeling of a homestyle kitchen restaurant both in appearance and in staff. Most likely your waitress will be Jackie, Heather, Shauna, or Jessica, each a part of the family
4
and willing to suggest to you their favorite dish. You’ll also probably meet Madeline herself ringing you up at the register and thanking you for your business. It’s these personal touches that make Mama’s food taste even better, and Steve Marino, head chef, enjoys customers and much as cooking. When he can’t be found in the kitchen, it’s probably because he’s out in the restaurant talking to patrons, making sure everything came out

Geatguide just right. Ready to visit? Here’s the dish on the menu. Mama’s best seller is (surprise, surprise) their homemade Lasagna. Oven baked and served with delicious toasted bread, it’s hard to beat. Our favorites? The Chipotle Chicken Pasta, Stromboli, and the Margherita Pizza. Not overdone on the garlic or on the price, each of these dishes
satisfies your deepest carb cravings. Speaking of indulgence, desserts are homemade too, like the Banana Caramel Pie made by Madeline’s daughter, Heather. Whatever you choose, you can guarantee that it will be served with a smile, it is made with love, and it will satisfy your taste buds. Moral of the story is? We love Mama’s Pizzeria, and you should too.

OFF THE
CLOCK LOOKING TO GET YOUR MIND OFF WORK? MAYBE YOU WANT A PLACE TO HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS AND HAVE A FEW DRINKS ONCE FIVE O’CLOCK ROLLS AROUND? WHY NOT TRY THE OFFICE? (WE’RE NOT CRAZY, WE PROMISE.)
It’s football weather and if you love to root for your favorite team, we suggest you do so at The Office Bar & Grill. McAllen’s own pub style bar and restaurant has the games, the food, and the drinks to satisfy the sports fan in you. Most importantly, The Office is one of the most welcoming businesses we’ve ever visited. Owners Yvette and Hector Ramos have been in business for over two years and have focused on providing their customers with great food, service, and a friendly atmosphere. With the phrase, “The food is great, but the spirits are better,” the Ramos’ made clear that their time and efforts are invested to make the Office a place for the customer (‘spirits’) to truly feel at home. We’re not suggesting you move in, but we won’t blame you
8
if you feel like it’s always the easiest place to pick for drinks on any given day. On tap, they’re serving both domestic and craft beers such as Leffe Brown and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and in the kitchen it’s only homemade and fresh. Chef Bobby Vasquez boasts a never frozen, always fresh mantra for his kitchen, serving up burgers made of all in-house ground brisket and daily specials that match country club style at a pauper’s price. Sounds like a great way to spend your Saturday rooting for or against the Cowboys. If you haven’t been, it’s worth the stop. Order a bacon avocado burger, an ice cold beer and a shot of your favorite tequila, take a deep breath and relax: you’re living the good life.

BEG FOR THE NIGHT Tiger’s Blood might be one of your favorite raspa flavors, but it’s also one of our favorite facilitators of great music coming to the Rio Grande Valley. Patrick Garcia, music promoter and owner of Tigersblood. org, has been bringing big, not so big to you, and should be big name bands to our area for the past 3 years. Recently partnering with the Historic Cine El Rey Theatre and owners Isaac and Bert Guerra, Tigersblood.org has had several successful shows. The most recent success was the popular Twin Shadow show on September 17th, bringing a crowd of 400 plus to the downtown theatre. If you haven’t heard of Twin Shadow it might be because they’re not your typical mainstream act. While other promoters may look for towards FM radio play to gage their next wager, Tigersblood. org caters to a different community. Included, but not limited to his scope are independent, hipster, new age, and blogosphere
renowned bands. Patrick, Isaac and Bert share a similar vision when it comes to music and events in our area: promote music they enjoy. Whether it’s Twin Shadow, Of Montreal, or Cine’s own Brotherhood Revival, you’re sure to get a show that is honestly supported by its venue and promoter. Tigersblood. org’s next big show? The Lower Dens at Fallback Records in McAllen. More out of town talent to diversify our RGV music scene. See you there.

SEXY & CHIC
If you’re Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transexual, open-minded, or love beautiful people and you haven’t visited Jackie O’s in McAllen on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, then you’ve been missing out. A landmark in the LGBT community, Jackie O’s has been serving up hot drink specials, video DJ’s, gogo dancers and more for 3 years running. The atmosphere is welcoming, chic, and hip, and is among the best bars in McAllen for music, drink specials, and entertainment. With an outdoor patio, indoor
dance floor, and sexy clientele, what more could you ask for on a night out? We dare you to try it out and not enjoy yourself. Straight, LGBT, or resisting a label, you might be surprised that you find you fit in just fine. Specific to October, it’s not a surprise that with Splash at South Padre the weekend of the 19th, Jackie O’s will be hosting an official Pre-Splash Party the Thursday before it all kicks off. With special guests, give aways, and as always, a great crowd the 19th is sure to get you ready for your weekend.

O FALL r g a n i c , local, and grown with love, the produce at Yahweh farms is something to rave about, but it’s not the whole picture that is painted by owners Diana and Saul Padilla, who opened the farm in 2005 with a vision of making a difference in the RGV. Recently the farm has been reaching out to the community in many ways.
Their Community Supported Agriculture program, or CSA, offers memberships to have vegetables delivered weekly to the farmers market of your choice. Monthly Community Garden Meetings are also under way with the help of UTPA and the HOPE organization, giving families the opportunity to learn how to farm together on their own plot within Yahweh’s land. To take advantage of their produce, look for their stand at the McAllen, Weslaco, and Brownsville markets. What’s even better? Soon you can find their vegetables at their
HARVEST
very own Farmer’s Market at the farm. Utopia just might exist on Morris Road in Harlingen: seedlings of broccoli and cauliflower are sprouting, tomatoes and peppers are ripening, and chickens are laying their eggs. Check out the proof for yourself at a local farmers market this week where you’ll still find bananas and butternut squash from last harvest and smiling faces bringing promises of the November varieties to come. Mmm, Fall here we come. Thank you, Yahweh Farms, for making it sound delicious.
