Future front covers: The Go Guide is holding a local photo contest. This is your chance for fame and fortune (as long as your idea of fortune doesn’t include $$). Photos should showcase an RGV location, activity, etc. If your photo is selected, you will be contacted via email for follow-up information to be published in the next issue. All entries should be cropped to fit in a 4.25” x 11” space. Budding journalistic talent? Want to be published in our publication? Let us know what your idea is for an editorial and we’ll hear you out. We want to give novice writers a voice! Get in touch through the email address above.

dear READERS: This is our 3rd issue of The Go Guide, and we’re glad you have us in your hands. This month we’re bringing you updated information about the local restaurants, shops, bars, live music venues, and community events around the Rio Grande Valley. Why are we focusing on local? Because it makes our cities great. Big business helps our economy and gives us more shopping and restaurant options, but it doesn’t reflect the culture and heritage of the place where many of us grew up. Focusing on the local businesses allows us to zero in on those establishments that are unique to the RGV, adding to the list of reasons why we love the area in which we live. That’s our vision, and we hope you see just how passionate and excited we are to bring you this publication. Different than the rest in size, content, and design, we think it’s worth the read. Pick us up, put us in your purse or truck, and take us wherever you go. Use us to help you find your night out or your Saturday morning. Especially as the holidays roll around, our cities become abuzz with the hustle and bustle of shopping, family gatherings, and Fall sports. Even though McAllen sits at 121 feet above sea level and is usually warm for the winter, we still embrace the changing seasons by putting on our peacoats and letterman jackets when it drops below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It might not feel like winter, but we embrace the winter clothes, coffee trends, and holiday festivities. So what are we bringing you this month? A bit of comfort food, downtown buzz, a peek into the LGBT community and holiday service ideas. In addition to our traditional Go Eat, Drink, Live, LGBT, and Community sections, we’ve added a Go Shop section exclusive to the holidays. Same creed: locally owned and operated. We’ve also provided you with two additional features: The Monthly Dish and Our Brew Guru. In the future, we’ll continue to write on what’s pertinent for the season, so look forward to December, the month of Christmas and the New Year. As long as the Mayan’s are incorrect, be looking for our issues in the first week of every month. Want to get involved? Like us on Facebook and share your events and feedback with us. We’re here for you, so let your voice be heard! www. facebook.com/thegoguide Cheers, Pattie Parker Publisher

comfort cravings We searched the Valley for some satisfaction to your winter induced comfort food needs and this is what we found: Four dishes and two baked delicacies from locally owned businesses, some in The Go Guide, some not, and from a variety of food genres. Either way, we’ve listed all of the restaurants below in the Directory, just in case you want to look them up and try them out. Enjoy, Valley, and eat comfortably.

TTHHEE M MO O NNTT HH LLYY DD II SSHH CHEF JAMES CANTER OWNER OF GUERRILLA GOURMET CATERING AND EVENTS

W

e know they’re good for us, but we don’t always know how to make them taste good (unless it’s under a heaping spoonful of butter): almighty vegetables. Why do we need them? Because they’re packed full of vitamins and minerals improving our digestion, our skin, our immunities to illness, and simply our overall wellness. We met with Chef James this month, former executive chef of Alhambra and current chef owner of Guerrilla Gourmet Catering and Events, and talked to him about different and preferred ways of preparing vegetables. “By far the most value you will receive from vegetables comes from preparing them raw,” he said, explaining “you want to capitalize on the nutritive properties and raw enzymes of the vegetables” which may be lost from over-cooking. As we spoke with James, he began to prepare what he called “Vegetable Ceviche”, “It’s ceviche, but with vegetables!” he jokingly explained as he began to wash and dice beets, radishes, zucchini and tomatoes, pour olive oil, and top with the juice from Valley Lemons. The dish, featured in our picture, can be used as a salad, appetizer, or simply a light lunch. We’ve listed the recipe here for you, but be aware that any vegetables can be combined to create this simple dish. The best veggies for it? What Chef James called the “meaty” veggies: zucchini, squash, peppers, beets, and carrots.

VEGETABLE CEVICHE Ingredients: 2 cups Vegetables – diced ½ Valley Lemon 1 Key Lime ½ tbsp Sherry Vinegar 1-2 tbsp Olive Oil 3 finger pinch of Salt and Pepper – each

Instructions: Buy vegetables at a local Farmers’ Market. Wash and dice vegetables. Add to small bowl. Add olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Squeeze the lemon and lime. Mix and let marinade and cool in refrigerator before serving. Serves 2. Why are we doing this article? Simple. Locally sourced vegetables are coming into season in full variety this month. The 3rd of November will bring us the first CSA deliveries from Yahweh, a relocated Saturday farmers’ market to the McAllen Public Library, and (with your help) a quickly growing customer base for locally sourced food. Contact James Canter for booking for your next special event: Guerrilla Gourmet Catering and Events (813) 504-2344

let’s shop! Eating, drinking, and going to local live music shows is great, but for those of us who like to dress up our look, we need to have something special in our closets for our night on the town. Whether it’s formal wear, jewelry, casual clothing, or footwear, our locally owned shops can help us dress up for our nights out. What a local specialty boutique can do for you versus a brand name department store is provide you with personal service, unique brands, and carefully selected items. As we spoke with local shop owner Erica Elizondo of Maripoza Boutique in McAllen, we learned a little more about what shops like hers have to offer. Tucked away off 10th street, in the shopping center just south of Dove, Maripoza sits alongside Shop 112, Sweet Temptations, Fiorella, and MoonBeans Coffee. Each business here has its own niche in the market, and Maripoza is no different. Offering exclusive items from around the world, the shop displays clothing, jewelry and gifts. Seen someone recently wearing a necklace with a sideways cross? Erica explained to us that her business, Maripoza Boutique, brought this trend (made famous by Kelly Rippa and Taylor Jacobson) to the Rio Grande Valley. In addition to jewelry, clothing lines like VaVa Voom, James & Joy and many more can be found here. Ever walk into a room and find that someone else is wearing your top? Well shopping at your local boutiques can help minimize your chances of this happening. Try it out this holiday season as your dressing up for a special occasion, or you’re just feeling like a new look. Go ahead, you deserve it.

83 SOUTH OF BUS.

17

TH

street has become a hot spot in McAllen for people to flock on the weekends looking to drink, dance, eat or simply socialize. South of Business 83, however, there is much more than 17th street to draw your nighttime attraction. Move over several blocks to the corner of 12th and Business 83 and you’ll find what we call the “Off 17th” district.

“WHETHER YOU STAY AT ONE PLACE, OR TRY OUT THE OTHERS, THIS “OFF 17TH” DISTRICT OFFERS A LESS BUSTLED FEEL THAN THE POPULAR STRIP.” House Wine, Red, Barcelona, Ice House and Empire all sit on the same block, making it an attractive area for your night. Wanting to go out, but hate driving from place to place? This block has it all: the delicious food and wine at Larry and Jessica Delgado’s establishment, the vaulted ceilings and high class persona of Empire, or the attractive patio of Red might already be some of your favorite places to frequent when you’re all dressed up. Whether you stay at one place, or try out the others, this “Off 17th” district offers a less bustled feel than the popular strip. Not looking for a fancy night out? Just want to relax and try something off the beaten path? Than Sofie’s SS Saloon might be up your alley. Tucked away off of South 10th street, past Highway 83 but prior to reaching Military Highway, you will find

24

one of the oldest bars in McAllen serving up a large outside patio, shuffleboard, and beer and wine behind the bar. Some say it’s a dive bar, while others may call it ‘just their style’; we say that you should see for yourself. So whether it’s a date night, friends wanting to compete at shuffleboard, or a night on the prowl, South of Old 83 has something for everyone. Always, we will suggest that you have a designated driver to get you to and from these locations; but especially during the upcoming holidays, we urge you even more to plan out your nights. Drinking becomes less fun when you get handcuffed, and we want you to be able to use the Go Guide daily, not gaze at it with longing. So stay safe McAllen, and check out our listings to see what the Southern part of our city has to offer. Enjoy.

THE BREW GURU BY JULIAN YBARRA, ‘BREWONION’

P

umpkin Pie anybody? Ok, well what about a well crafted beer with all your favorite qualities of your Thanksgiving treat? We’re talking roasted pumpkin notes, daring spice additions and all the nostalgia that comes along with this seasonal ale. I’ve got three different offerings to bring to your table, all different in their own way, whether in beer style or in selection of ingredients used and quantity. This is a review, not a competition. So there is no winner, just a certain beer for a certain mood (although, you can pick your favorite if you like). 1. BROOKLYN POST ROAD Pumpkin-** (out of five) Spice Presence- *** (out of five) Drinkability-***** (out of five) Pouring bright, this beer has a well rounded malt and spice balance with aromas more on the nutmeg cinnamon and ginger side. The modest hop addition, light body and level of carbonation lends a dry finish that makes this beer very sessionable.

2. HARPOON UFO PUMPKIN Pumpkin-**** Spice Presence-*** Drinkability-*** This beer pours cloudy, which is to style for an unfiltered wheat beer. The spices used give a strong “ground/powdery” flavor that stays on the palate a little longer than the rest. The beer finishes slightly sweet and is the most savory of the bunch. 3. BLUE MOON HARVEST PUMPKIN ALE Pumpkin-** Spice Presence-* Drinkability-**** This beer pours a bright copper/burnt amber color and has a very clean aroma of faint spice and pumpkin pulp. Very malty upfront, which leaves the pumpkin and spice flavors well into the background. Very clean with a dry finish and very low hop bitterness. This beer can be found on tap at Roosevelt’s at 7.

WALKING IN WOMEN’S

SHOES

State and national competitions, dance routines, full make-up and hair, handmade costumes, the life of a drag queen. In LGBT bars and clubs, drag queens in full costume are as common as waitresses wearing revealing clothing and passing around shots are in mainstream venues. The common in one lifestyle however, is uncommon in the other; so for a look inside this performance world, we turned to Lady B, a well-known performer in the Rio Grande Valley’s LGBT community. Lady B is the stage name of Benjamin Benavides, who performs drag as his full-time occupation. Benjamin, who lives his daily life as a gay man, enlightened us on some misnomers and misunderstood aspects of this lifestyle of whom few may understand. Booked Wednesday through Sunday nights at PBD’s in McAllen and Studio 69 in Brownsville, Lady B keeps her books full. She is brought to life nightly through make-up, costume, dance, and (of course) high heels, and as Benjamin put it, “It’s more of an art form than anything else.” This artform, he continues, demands passion in order to be successful, “You have to love it.” “When we dance for a crowd, our goal is to make you relax, have fun, and enjoy the show,” he explained as he described the nightly events held throughout the Valley in clubs like Jackie O’s, Broadway Avenue, PBD’s, and Studio 69. In addition to these bookings, you might be surprised to know that Lady B is also frequently booked by private events for heterosexual clients as well as homosexual. This includes quinceaneras and bachelorette parties, surprising? Internationally, Benjamin also spends part of every year in Spain performing his same character and profiting from the trip. All in all, what we see is a niche of the market that goes unseen by the majority of the mainstream. Although minorities in society, drag queens live a life filled with a strong community support base, family-like ties between them, and fame amongst their peers. Throughout the Valley, there are more than 20 well known performers, and many more who simply have an alternative way of expressing their identities. If you’re interested in catching a show, simply go to any of the bars listed below. NOVEMBER_2012

Simply Make A Difference This Holiday That Lasts All Year Long BY LAURA REAGAN-PORRAS What do Casual Fridays and community service have in common? Inspired by their boss, Hidalgo County District Clerk, Laura Hinojosa’s example of volunteerism, community service and philanthropy, the staff at the county district clerk’s office started a tradition of community service. Every Friday, they collect a “fee” in order to wear jeans and t-shirts to work. They collect the money throughout the year and then donate a randomly selected area non-profit. The t-shirts carry the logo of the chosen nonprofit. Last year they donated over $3,000 to Palmer Drug Abuse. This year they will donate the money to the Boys & Girls Club of McAllen. Staff members compete among each other for who can raise the most money and do the most volunteer work. Every month, you will find the staff participating in local fundraisers. They walk for March of Dimes, run in the Relay for Life, conduct food drives at Thanksgiving and collect toys for CASA (Court Appointed

Office manager, Ricardo Contreras says, “By pooling our resources, we can make an even greater contribution to our community.” Since 2008, the Hidalgo County District Clerk Office has collected over $28,638.00 for charitable organizations in Hidalgo County. Laura Hinojosa shares, “What started off as a ‘casual Friday’ has turned into a wonderful way for our staff to give back to our community. We are honored to be able to contribute, in a small way, to different charitable organizations that help improve the lives of people in our community.” Likewise, the Office

of Development and Advancement at the University of Texas – Pan American (UTPA) under the direction of Veronica Gonzales sets an example for students. Staff chose the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley (FBRGV) as their primary community cause this year. They sponsored Empty Bowls, the annual fundraiser for the FBRGV. UTPA’s Alumni Christmas party will hold a food drive for their Christmas party, December 20th. “UTPA strives to inspire in its students a tradition of giving back. Helping one’s neighbor creates a stronger community,” affirms Veronica Gonzalez, Vice President of University Advancement.
