In April, Colorado State University will mark the 20th anniversary of CSU Athletics’ largest community event: Ram Jam. Each spring, student-athletes share their love of sports with hundreds of Fort Collins children, guiding them through a series of activities in pursuit of fun, prizes… and some life lessons. Group Marketing Director Helen Gray has been involved with the project from day one. “We saw it as an opportunity for kids to come to a free event on campus and hang out with positive role models — the student-athletes. The message from the student-athletes was the importance of staying in school, the benefit of being on a team and of staying away from drugs and alcohol,” she says. The family-friendly festivities have grown considerably in the last two decades, with attendance up from 800 to 1,500–elementary-aged kids.

How does it work?
Who’s it for?
Ram Jam provides a unique chance for CSU’s studentathletes to get involved with the community. The studentathletes and the kids have a chance to connect in a fun VIP experience. Several sports stations are set up throughout CSU’s Moby Arena — including the concourse and court. A station is set up for each sport and the kids play a game within that sport. Kids pick a passport or a map and go to each station and get a stamp, playing about 10 minutes at each station. Parents may escort their children from one activity to the next and kids can choose their favorite sport. However, they’re encouraged to try each activity to make the most of the event. Many of CSU’s 16 NCAA Division I sports are represented at the event, including swimming, diving, football, softball, basketball, and cross-country. Student-athletes man each station, helping the kids along and offering coaching and tips. The incentive is to go to all the stations. Once the child gets all the stamps, he or she can choose a prize at the prize booth. Prizes differ from year to year, but may include tickets to Rams’ games, t-shirts and other similar items. But it’s not just about participating in the sports themselves. It’s about encouraging the youth to interact with studentathletes, including the CSU cheer squads. Participants can get autographs and ask questions in addition to playing games.
All students eighth grade and under in Northern Colorado are eligible and encouraged to join this fun, free event. All of the eligible students are invited to attend with their families or caretakers. There’s no lower age limit to participate, but high school students are precluded because of recruitment conflicts.

In Colorado, small companies employ nearly half of the private workforce. “We get a lot of people with skill-sets and experience and knowledge, but not necessarily business experience. So we try to package what they’re doing so it’s profitable and sustainable,” says Mike O’Connell, Center Director and board member with Larimer County Workforce Development and the Downtown Business Association in Fort Collins. O’Connell ran his own business for 11 years before turning his skills to help others start theirs. And although the specific needs of each new business owner will differ, O’Connell has observed one generalization: the vast majority of clients radically underestimate what it takes to sell a product or service. Thus, he says, “We spend a lot of time teaching what not to do. And asking our clients,‘What makes you and your business stand out?’” While people typically seek out the SBDC looking for assistance with marketing, to get a better handle on accounting, or for help starting a business, they often walk away with much more. In recent years, the SBDC’s reach has grown and its committed staff has gotten better and better at identifying and complementing local niches. Just three years ago, the SBDC helped roughly 300 clients annually. By 2015, this number had doubled, with center consultants providing 2,500 hours of one-on-one services to over 600 individuals. In these personalized sessions, small-business owners — or people considering starting their own company — meet with one of the SBDC’s industry and field experts. Consultation services are free of charge for Center clients. The SBDC also hosts about 80 classes annually. In 2015, 800 individuals attended 75 workshops on topics including “how to start a business,” “creating a business plan,” “accounting

In addition to these direct services, the SBDC links clients to potential human resources who can help transform business dreams into manageable realities. In the Fort Collins office, a table teems with contact cards and fliers for micro-lenders, attorneys, bookkeepers, veterans support systems, and the Larimer County Workforce among others. These professionals are versed in the needs of small businesses and many offer initial consultations on a free or discounted basis. 2015 and 2016 have seen some exciting transitions for the SBDC, with greater attention to requirements of Larimer County entrepreneurs. Most of the SBDC’s clients constitute what O’Connell calls “Main Street businesses” and nonprofits with fewer than 20 to 25 employees. “We work with a lot of husband/wife teams, two-person partnerships, businesses with just four or five or six employees,” he says. But needs tend to differ depending upon industry and a community’s economic make-up. In 2015, it brought on more expertise for clients in the fields of arts/creatives, restaurants/food, retail, and health and wellness. O’Connell envisions some other changes for the SBDC in 2016. “We need to do a better job of being aware how little time business owners have to get further business education,” he says. Where it won’t hurt content or delivery, the Center will be using webcast and podcast technologies to make training more accessible. So be on the lookout for flexible new class formats and options this year.
