GroupGives, a charitable fund, emerged over two years ago from this philosophy of generosity. Broker Associate and Partner Becky Vasos explains, “At The Group, we’re very community-committed and everyone gives, but there’s a lot of things to give to. . . . And to kind of hone that mission down is pretty good.” In identifying a central mission for the fund, The Group wanted something that resonated with their work as well as their community investment. ...the GroupGives mission states that “We believe every person deserves a place to call home.” Rotary; Neighbor to Neighbor; Larimer County Long Term Recovery Group; Alternatives to Violence; Matthews House; Respite Care; Pathways Hospice; Project Self-Sufficiency; Mountain States Children’s Home; Disabled Resources; and Red Cross - Greeley Family Home Fire. McBartlett, Chair of the GroupGives Grant Committee, extols his colleagues’ commitment. “I’m so inspired by our Partners’ and staff members’ generosity in the community,” he says. “They’ve contributed, since GroupGives’ inception in summer 2013, over $200,000 toward the cause, with a 43% contribution adoption rate so far. We’re quickly climbing toward our goal of 100% of our partners and staff contributing. In addition, Group Mortgage is also a generous supporter.” During that time, GroupGives has supported community organizations through several channels. Twenty percent of contributions support emergency quarterly funding, 20% go to endowments and the final 60% are earmarked for annual strategic partnerships. Any organization meeting the GroupGives mission may apply for an emergency quarterly award, typically ranging from $2,000 to $5,000. This open, but formal, grant process provides dollars to organizations in need of immediate financial assistance. McBartlett is especially excited about the creation of a GroupGives endowment, which will ensure continued giving into the future. “We’re working toward an endowed GroupGives fund at the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado,” he explains. “We can endow the fund when we reach $100,000, and by setting 20% of all contributions aside, our current $41,750 is quickly approaching that goal of a forever fund.”

The third arm of GroupGives support provides large grants to carefully selected groups. In an effort to maximize their impact on the community, GroupGives began “reaching out to organizations we think are compatible,” McBartlett says. “We ask what they would do with a larger grant.” Once these specially selected organizations successfully complete the thorough application and vetting process — carried out in partnership with the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado — they receive awards of $30,000 to $50,000. But The Group’s generosity doesn’t stop with money. The company also sponsors an annual GroupGives Back day, during which individuals volunteer their time to a shared cause. “This year, we also, in partnership with the Larimer County Long Term Recovery Group, volunteered 180 man-hours in one day,” says McBartlett. Together with Larimer County, the City of Fort Collins, the City of Loveland, United Way of Larimer County and FEMA, 60 Partners and staff members served. The volunteers worked in Drake and Estes Park, helping repair homes and property damaged in the September 2013 floods. Vasos especially appreciates the satisfaction of giving back in a way that feels truly impactful. “There’s just been so many good things,” she says. “I volunteer for quite a few agencies and to be part of this is pretty special.” And that feeling of benevolence is extended to The Group’s clients. “Another thing I do is at closings,” Vasos explains. “I present a certificate to my customer that shows I donated a portion of the commission in my buyer’s or seller’s name. So everybody feels like they’re giving.”

New Years Eve countdown. Sure, it’s a bit early, but it’ll be the New Year somewhere, right? At the performance’s climax, the renovated square will be lit all around. Acts will be scattered throughout Downtown, so keep your eyes peeled for entertainers wandering about the Plaza or stationed at specific venues. From comedians to puppet choirs, you’ll find something for the whole family. There will even be a dedicated “Kids World” inside the Northside Aztlan Community Center. This special spot will feature face painters, balloon artists, magicians, balloon pop-drops and gyms filled with an inflatable bounce-land. The night will showcase artists from local troupes and organizations. Can’t imagine a New Year celebration without the bright lights festivities? Have no fear. Revelers can ring in the New Year at 10:00 pm with a special fireworks display in Old Town Square. This year, for the first time, Old Town Square’s historic buildings will be illuminated alongside the pyrotechnics. A Little Bit of History

The concept of the family-friendly First Night didn’t originate with Fort Collins. Rather, Wilkinson explains, “First Night New Year’s Eve was started in Boston as an alternative to the traditional “booze-fueled” NYE celebrations.” Since the idea’s inception forty years ago, it has taken off in dozens of cities throughout the country.

Why Fort Collins You might be wondering, why would the “Napa Valley of Beers,” home to dozens of breweries, cideries and distilleries, adopt a New Year festival that forgoes alcoholic beverages? It’s all about highlighting a different vein of creativity. “Our region is lucky to have such a vast bank of artists, creatives and performers,” says Wilkinson. “This is directly reflected in the fact that all New Years Eve performers are homespun! We’re happy to support the performers and they are happy to come back year after year or to send their professional cohorts.” This year will feature over 50 performances scattered throughout more than 10 venues in Downtown Fort Collins.
