he decision to focus on custom homes came naturally to award winning Jay Brannen, who began building in Northern Colorado in the late 1990s. Now 17 years in business, having worked on subdivisions as well as commercial projects, he focuses almost exclusively on helping clients design and build their one-of-a-kind custom homes. Early in his career, Brannen had the opportunity to work on some unique commercial buildings, including the Denver Aquarium and a Harrah’s Casino. Even then, he found himself drawn to projects that were “unique and different,” projects that called for creativity and collaboration. Building custom homes that are truly oneof-a-kind thus came as a logical next step in his career and business focus, and Brannen says that the fun and challenges of this work are what keep the job exciting. n 1877, when Loveland was named for Colorado Central Railroad President, William A. H. Loveland, it is unlikely that people anticipated how the city’s name would come to shape its fate.

As the days slowly begin to lengthen, easing their way from Colorado’s darkest to its coldest times of year, Loveland is gearing up to do what it’s done for nearly 70 years: warm hearts nation- and world-wide. In Loveland, the first two weeks of February are the “Valentine’s Season,” and it is clear how this city - known for its celebration of love and famed as a romantic wedding destination - earned its nickname, “The Sweetheart City.” In 1947, Loveland put itself on the radar of romantics everywhere with its now world-renowned Valentine’s Day Re-mailing Program. In addition, Valentine’s Season now boasts a number of special events and programs, including the display of heart art throughout the city, the offering of specially brewed coffees and beers, and designated spokesperson, Miss Valentine. The Sweetheart City definitely loves celebrating this sweethearts’ time of year.

Colorado residents have the option to drop off their pre-addressed, pre-stamped valentines to local King Soopers or City Market food stores. Feb. 7 is the final day to drop off valentines at these locations.

Valentine’s Day Re-Mailing Program

Loveland’s Hearts Around the City

What is it? Every year, “The Sweetheart City’s” Chamber of Commerce holds a contest for residents to submit a Valentine’s Day poem and design will star throughout the Valentine’s Season. The winning verse and design grace special valentines that are sold throughout Northern Colorado and are used to create a special emblem for the re-mailing program. The Chamber of Commerce, the Loveland Post Office, King Soopers and a team of volunteers then team up to spread the love: those who want their valentines stamped with the year’s cachet send pre-addressed, pre-stamped valentines enclosed in larger 1st class envelopes to the Loveland Postmaster; volunteers will handstamp the valentines with the winning verse and design and mail them on to their intended recipients. The Loveland Valentine’s Day Re-Mailing Program is the largest of its kind in the United States, with over 160,000 cards re-mailed annually. Cards come from all over the US and all over the world, originating in all 50 states and over 100 countries. The 2015 design will be available in January and the re-mailing program kicks off Monday, Feb. 2, 2015. How did it start? The re-mailing program began when several members of the Loveland Stamp Club of the 1940s came up with the idea to offer and showcase unique stamps. The group was initially unsuccessful in promoting the program and eventually turned to Ted Thompson, then president of the Loveland Chamber of Commerce. Recognizing the opportunity to take advantage of Loveland’s special name, Thompson recommended changing the angle, and marketing the program, and the city, around love.

Loveland’s Valentine’s Season celebrations don’t stop in the mailroom. Walk around The Sweetheart City during the first two weeks of February and you’re bound to notice hearts on the lamp posts of the main streets. These red wooden hearts, available annually through the Thompson Valley Rotary, are adorned with personalized sentiments of love and affection. To personalize a heart, community members can contact the Thompson Valley Rotary Club with their message of 25 letters or fewer and local students will stencil them onto the hearts to be displayed. Proceeds of the heart sales help children through the Thompson Valley Rotary Club.
