Schrader Oil Celebrates 80 Years in Fort Collins As summer (finally) takes hold in Northern Colorado and residents fuel up for road trips and long days in the sunshine, a locally owned chain of gas stations and convenience stores celebrates its 80th birthday. Wayne H. Schrader laid the foundation for Schrader Oil in 1937, when he opened his first Texaco office and distribution warehouse in Fort Collins. He sold a variety of petroleum products — from gasoline to motor oil — to service stations, automobile dealerships, and agricultural contractors in town and the surrounding county. Wayne H. built on his local connections to develop a reputation for integrity and exemplary customer service, and eventually acquired two service stations of his own. 4 ︱ Northern Colorado Real Estate SOURCE

In the decades that followed, the company passed to sons and daughters who diligently kept its customerfirst priorities intact while navigating shifting interests and community needs. It was when the second generation of the business took off that the storefront side of the company that’s so familiar around Fort Collins today began to blossom. “Wayne H.’s son, my grandfather, graduated … from CSU when it was the A & M Aggies, in 1952 and started working as a consignee [for Texaco] in 1954. My great grandfather [Wayne H.] retired from the oil business in 1963,”says Kyle Schrader, Director of Marketing and great grandson of Wayne H. “[When] my grandfather Wayne K., [was] about 34 years old [he] became interested in purchasing land for stores. 1966 was when we first started actually building convenience stores around Northern Colorado. [We] stopped working for Texaco and started with Phillips 66, then around 2010, we finally switched from Phillips 66 and Conoco to Shell. But we’ve still always been Schrader’s Country Stores.” Now in its fourth generation, Schrader Oil Co., which Kyle runs alongside his father Steve and twin brother Eric, has 18 stores from Estes Park to Ted’s Place to the city of Fort Collins. As of 2015, the company became a family enterprise of sorts, with separate propane and real estate development entities run by Wayne K.’s other children — Perry and Jennifer — and grandchildren — Casey and Clayton. Kyle grew up working in the family stores and helping maintain properties before studying design in Oregon and Denver. In 2008 he returned to Fort Collins and Schrader Oil after a yearlong position with a Denver based Marketing and communications company. “We’re on the cutting edge of technology and social media. We have spent the last several years updating our technological infrastructure including digital and social media marketing, a robust new website, in-store scanning and a new loyalty program called Schrader Saver. Our

customers will now be rewarded for purchases both at the pump and in store with points that spend like cash. We’re rocking and rolling, a new store will be opening in July,” Kyle says. This summer, to celebrate their 80th anniversary an annual “summer soda club”will launch. Customers who purchase the company’s specially designed commemorative cup will get free refills all summer. As Northern Colorado booms and more major competitors move into the local market, Kyle and his family are coming up with new strategies to push themselves and the business. The family has big plans for Schrader Oil, hoping to establish stores further east and to launch a re-branding operation in 2018. “We have a lot of huge players moving into this town, but we’re still building stores, and looking to expand,”says Kyle. Though the family is excited about the coming changes, they are still committed to furthering their role and deepening their roots as a community business. “Yes, we’re branded as Shell [and we] sell Shell products, but we’re the local guys.” But for the Schraders, being “the local guys” isn’t just about great service and building a loyal customer base. It’s about giving back to the community that has made them successful. The Schrader Grants Foundation meets quarterly to select local organizations to support, recently focusing on children’s organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Larimer County. Schrader’s philanthropic arm also makes it a priority to consistently contribute to Wayne K.’s Alma Mater, Colorado State University. “ [We] donated to the new alumni center at CSU that’s part of the new stadium. [My] grandfather is one of seven people still alive who has been donating annually to CSU Alumni,” Kyle says. In honor of his grandparents’— Wayne K. and Phyllis — generosity over the years, the center will feature a rare Model-T and a documentary about the couple. “We love this community,” says Kyle. “[That’s] why we have our business here.”
