Colorado is a giving-oriented state, with approximately 85% of residents committed to regular charitable giving. In keeping with its community, The Group, Inc. prides itself on giving back and investing in the future of our state. Fifteen years ago, The Group established its scholarship Program. This merit-based award helps Colorado State University attract the region’s best and brightest and supports students’ quests for an exciting and practical education. Each year since 2000, The Group awards one or more first year full-tuition scholarships to Northern Colorado high school graduates planning to attend CSU’s College of Business. Recipients are chosen based on academic performance, community service, extracurricular activities and clubs, and an interview with the scholarship committee (comprising of Group Partners). Since the scholarship’s inception, this award has started 22 outstanding students on a path toward business success.
After the Award In 2002, Emily Sockler became one of the first recipients of The Group Scholarship. Sockler, a self-proclaimed Fort Collins “nearly native” (she moved from Iowa at age five), graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in 2002. After graduating, Sockler worked briefly in banking before eventually finding her way back to The Group, Inc., where she has worked since 2008. She started on staff as the relocation director for the company’s relocation services department, and two years ago got licensed to sell real estate. Though since 2013 she has been heavily focused on building her business, Sockler volunteers with Service to Mankind and United Way. Like the company where she’s now a partner, she recognizes that “you just have to get out into the community.” The Group Scholarship did more for Group Realtor and Partner Emily Sockler than support her academic achievements. It’s ultimately changed her life. “It’s kind of cool that it’s come full circle,” she explains. “It has kept me in Fort Collins. I probably wouldn’t have attended CSU if I hadn’t gotten this [scholarship], but it made it easy and desirable. Now I have weekly dinners with my family.”

starting his own college tenure. Hazen will begin attending CSU in the fall of 2015, and plans to major in Business Administration. The Loveland High School graduate epitomizes the type of well-rounded students celebrated by the award. Though young, Hazen has had business on his mind for a while. He was very involved in his high school’s marketing programs and spent two summers interning in CSU’s Sports Media Relations Department. He also served as a state officer for Colorado DECA—an international not-for-profit student organization aimed at preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in business—during the 2014-2015 school year. In addition to his regular involvement with business-related extra-curricular activities, Hazen is an athlete who gives back. As a freshman and sophomore, he played basketball for his high school team and has coached 3rd and 4th graders in the sport.
