HOW DO YOU #LIVELOVELAND? Hashtag effort propels Lovelanders to display their community pride

Since last fall, people have been uploading photos to a gallery on the newly launched LiveLoveland.org website and Instagram images have been popping up with the hashtag #LiveLoveland. A perusal of the image galleries reveals shots of food, art, festivals, the great outdoors, and a range of other activities and amenities people appreciate about their town. Earlier this year, the Loveland Strategic Partnership — a group of about 30 local business owners — officially launched a new campaign that’s been months, maybe even years, in the making. The Loveland Strategic Partnership is primarily focused on economic development, but #LiveLoveland is more than that. It aims to engage Sweetheart City residents to share their favorite things about living in the Northern Colorado community. “We call it a quality of life and community branding campaign,” says Doug Rutledge, a Loveland native and key voice behind #LiveLoveland. “We take the message to Lovelanders of what a great place we have, and how lucky we are to have it, and what does that mean to people.”

Rutledge and his #LiveLoveland collaborator, Jay Dokter, put in a lot of face time to get the word out. They’ve visited City Council, the Rotary Club, and other local civic groups, leading slide show presentations that are met with resounding enthusiasm. “I have a series of ten slides at the beginning of my presentation, and each slide features an aspect of Loveland that I personally love. All of our community activities — Fire & Ice, Bands & Brews, barbecues, fireworks — our committed volunteer community, the natural setting with mountains. We start our presentations reminding people of all the great stuff we have here that we may overlook from time to time, but which constitute a great environment in which to live,” says Rutledge.

Beyond the Partnership’s own efforts, Rutledge and Dokter stress the importance of locals getting behind the drive to share the #LiveLoveland love. That’s where the Facebook page, Instagram hashtag, and online photo gallery come in. To get a broad swath of the community involved, including youth, the multifaceted campaign uses social media, newspaper advertising, billboards, and, a favorite, Community Connectors. #LiveLoveland’s Community Connectors are passionate locals who commit to taking the campaign’s message to the community at large via their own social networks. To become a Connector, just visit the website and sign up or attend a meeting. The #LiveLoveland campaign has easy appeal, but if it’s not as focused on economic development as the Loveland Strategic Partnership’s other projects, what is it trying to achieve? “The goal is for people all across different sectors of the community — from businesses to non-profits to government — all areas to collaborate together for the betterment of the community. It’s not top down, it’s not a government initiative, it’s the people coming together, wanting to make a significant positive impact on our community,” says Dokter. That community impact is already growing organically in the campaign’s early months. Having a grassroots movement like #LiveLoveland makes it the kind of place that people want to visit, the kind of place they want to live, and that ends up being good for the community.

The Partnership is focusing on working in parts of the community where it can make a difference: students, artists, the workforce, Loveland schools alumni, and the faith and non-profit organizations. Together, the Partnership hopes people from a wide range of sectors will be able to build the best possible Loveland. “Will #LiveLoveland go on forever? I don’t know,” says Rutledge. “I think we are going to find our way along and see where this leads us. In the process we are going to listen to the community and find out what the community’s needs and desires are.”
