n the dry climate of Colorado, lawn and garden irrigation keeps everything lush and green. When setting up irrigation, it’s important to consider water conservation and available options into your design. Let’s review some basic guidelines to ensure a greener summer.
Conservation Water conservation is sometimes overlooked, but is important to the sustainability of our state. Here are a few simple steps you can take to use water responsibly and still enjoy your garden and yard. Consider xeriscaping some areas of your lawn to eliminate some of the water needs. Use greywater: •• Laundry-to-landscape systems require just a few hose and valve installations and make using grey water pretty easy. •• There are also gravity systems that allow water to flow from the shower or sink in your home. •• Regulations state that you cannot use grey water in a sprinkler system, but in-ground irrigation is more efficient anyway. •• When using grey water on your plants, you may want to consider using more natural, biodegradable cleaning products. Drip irrigation allows you to deliver water directly to vegetables, flowers and beds for more efficient water use.

Irrigation technology has come a long way toward helping us conserve water. There are climate sensors that account for rain, wind and temperature. There are also ET controllers that collect current weather information from data centers and control your irrigation system based on this information. Timing is everything when it comes to watering your plants and your lawn: •• Rather than setting your sprinklers to automatically water every few days, install a manual option so that you can adjust for the weather conditions – no fancy sensors needed. •• Water at night to avoid evaporation and allow your plants to soak in more of the water. •• Winter water to keep your soil from drying out during the colder months. Once a month during a dry winter will do the trick. Sprinkler systems Traditional timed sprinkler systems have become a must-have for lawn-cultivating folk for years. Systems have improved quite a bit since their inception. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights to incorporate into your landscaping. Zoning – Proper zoning gives you the control over the timing and amount of water being delivered. For example, you don’t want your grass getting the same treatment as your veggies or flowers. And you’ll probably need less water for shaded areas than those exposed to more sun. Again, try out a manual system or install weather sensors for the most efficient usage of water in each zone.

To DIY or not to DIY – Actually, sprinkler systems are not all that complex to install, but can be very labor intensive, especially in rocky soil: •• The advantage to having a professional install your system is that they can help you choose the right features and adjust the system for optimization. •• Most professionals can also install the underground hose without digging, so your lawn will not have any recovery time. •• If you do install your own system, do your homework while planning your zones and be sure to adjust everything when you are done – no dry spots and no watering the sidewalk! Balcony landscaping You love your low maintenance apartment or townhome, but sometimes you really wish you had a yard. Don’t fret – you can make a tiny oasis out of your balcony with just a few green touches. •• Containers are your friend – pots, troughs, hanging baskets, boxes. Get an assortment of shapes, sizes and colors to enrich your space. •• Think vertical. Use balcony railing as a trellis, hang plants from the ceiling to draw the eyes upward. More people are finding ways to enjoy nature in a small space – even trees and small shrubs are fair game for the adventurous apartment dweller. Just getting started When you move to a new home, you may be inheriting mature landscaping and well-planned outdoor space. Or if you move into a brand new build, you could have a blank slate of a yard. And of course there is everything in between. When thinking through a plan for your new space, just take things one step at a time. First, develop a plan for the landscape. Just be sure to choose a durable outdoor tile and avoid a slick glazed tile. •• Concrete – Poured concrete is the most durable choice for a patio. It gives a lot of flexibility to choose a specific shape and it can be stained for a less industrial feel. Fire! Who doesn’t love to sit around a fire – especially on these cool Colorado nights?
