Several years ago, the City of Fort Collins History Museum and the Discovery Science Center embarked on a joint capital campaign that was a bit about timing and necessity and a lot about vision. That campaign led to the collaboratively imagined and developed Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, which opened in 2012. The history museum was “running out of room and their facilities were in need of updating and repair. Fort Collins will be the fourth city to host Pterosaurs and the only one in the region, joining the ranks of New York City, Pittsburg and Los Angeles. The FCMoD has worked hard to carve out a space for itself in Northern Colorado and is currently the only place outside of Denver with the capacity to bring these types of experiences to the community. “This particular exhibit won’t go to Denver,” Allison explains (its exhibition contract has an exclusivity radius of 150 miles). The inclusion of traveling exhibits has been on the FCMoD’s radar since the beginning and is built into the business model. The building has a dedicated five-thousand square-foot space — the Woodward Special Exhibition Gallery — conditioned specifically for such experiences. And it’s made possible thanks to local business sponsors such as Water Pik, Inc. and Woodward, Inc. Hailing from New York’s American Museum of Natural History, Pterosaurs is a great lead-off for the FCMoD’s traveling exhibits. It’s “prestigious and high caliber,” says Allison. But it’s also timely and “accessible, as far as, pterosaurs are an area of study that have had a lot of recent discoveries, so there’s a lot of information to present, a lot of new information for people.” Many of us grew up learning about pterodactyls but that was about it as far as flying dinosaurs went. In recent years, scientists have discovered roughly one-hundred-fifty species of pterosaurs that come in a wide range of colors and sizes. The smallest would have fit in a human palm. The largest are as big as a small aircraft. And excavations that have unearthed their fossils all over the world suggest

they ruled the skies from about two-hundred-twentymillion to sixty-six-million years ago, when they went extinct with the other dinosaurs. The Pterosaurs exhibit features models that highlight the animals’ most fascinating physical attributes, including vibrant crests running from beak to skull. In addition, there will be large replicas of the animals hanging overhead and dioramas depicting them as they might have been in real life. The OtterBox Digital Dome Theater will show National Geographic’s “Flying Monsters,” a film that will complement the displays. But perhaps the most the fitting aspect is the assortment of hands-on exhibits that will be featured. Not only will visitors get to “fly a pterosaur” as it dives into the water or zooms through forests in search of its prey, they’ll also get to interact with hollow bones and use a specially designed app to explore the creatures in greater depth. The Pterosaur launch of FCMoD’s traveling exhibits program is just the tip of the inspired museum’s projects. Since its inception, hundreds of thousands of people — nearly half from outside of Colorado — have visited. In its regular lineup, the museum offers a range of interactive exhibits that educate about everything from nature to music and are designed to appeal to a broad audience. As an added bonus, the OtterBox Digital Dome Theater showcases the cosmos through film. And curious community members are encouraged to visit the Research Room, where a historical archive holds reference books as well as artifacts including maps, photos, transcripts, scrapbooks and newspaper microfilm.

A self-described “wine monger,” he keeps his knowledge up-to-date by meeting with wholesalers, visiting producers, and tasting thousands of wines each year. This expertise lets him not only buy the best selection of wines for the store, but know how to sell it too.
