Last month, Patty Weible joined The Group as CFO, bringing decades of experience and a passion for helping Realtors® serve the community to the best of their ability. Patty got into finance in college, hoping it would give her a leg up in the business world. “I decided I should pick something challenging because it would help me when I tried to find a job after school. I’d heard from other people that if you understand the finance side, that’s really important to adding value to a company,” she says. So, she earned her undergraduate degree in business and finance and later went on to get an MBA in International Business. After more than 25 years working in a variety of Colorado industries, including tech, education, and health care, this will be Patty’s first foray into Real Estate. But those previous jobs shaped her perspective on working in finance and she’s embraced a people-oriented approach that makes her a perfect fit for The Group.

During her time at other companies, Patty enjoyed working with her sales teams. “That was always my favorite role,” she says. “I could really relate to them. I enjoyed helping them drive and grow the business, supporting them in a way that makes their job easier and ensures our financial practices are streamlined [At The Group]. I really look forward to supporting the Realtors® at The Group.” The business of helping people buy and sell their dream homes has a lot of moving parts. As contract employees, real estate brokers own their businesses and, for the most part, they can manage them as they see fit. But at The Group, Inc., Realtors® find an unprecedented level of support. The Financial Services department — comprising of Patty, Cheryl Dutro, business manager and Kristin Kendall — plays a key part in that, keeping businesses and transactions running smoothly.

Supporting the Job

Money Management

First and foremost, The Group’s Financial Services department provides a number of services that help Broker Partners do their jobs as efficiently and worry-free as possible. This includes having established relationships and accounts with vendors so that Realtors® aren’t digging into their own pocket for marketing costs such as photography and printing. The Realtors® still cover the expenses out of their business, but it’s taken out of their commission checks on the back end. “They don’t have to worry about that piece of the business by fronting the money, and waiting to get reimbursed. And the vendors know that when they submit their invoices to us, we’ll pay,” says Patty. The Group has affiliated businesses that the Finanical Services department works in conjunction with which includes The Group Guarantee Title, LLP, Group Mortgage, LLC, The Source Property Management and Ninja, LLC training. With mortgage and title services in our family of companies, each critical in the real estate purchase and sales process, we bring unmatched convenience and professionalism to our customers who choose to use our affiliated businesses. We also offer property management services to assist our investor customers. The Financial Services department also oversees programs that directly affect buyers and sellers, thus helping Broker/ Partners provide the best customer service possible. The Group has programs such as Guaranteed Move, which is a fee based program in which The Group guarantees a home sale in order to free a seller up to make a purchase without the stress of an uncertain contingency. They also have a Home Improvement Loan program — in which The Group pays for home improvements and takes it out of the net sale proceeds — helps Realtor® and sellers market homes that need some updates that might otherwise be out of reach.

On top of the direct business support, the department helps Broker/Partners to manage their own financial needs, from disbursing into income & taxes accounts to shares in the company stock, or charitable organizations such as Group Gives, United Way, Realtors® for Kids, etc. We can also put their money into retirement savings or even college savings accounts for their children. This means giving Partners the flexibility to deposit commission checks in variety of ways or to multiple checking or savings accounts. “We handle all of that out of our office,” says Patty. “We talk with individual Partners about how they want their commission checks disbursed and then provide that support. In addition, since every Broker at The Group is also an employee owner, a portion of each commission check can be applied toward purchasing corporate stock. But managing all of that can be complicated. The Financial Services department manages stock purchases and is responsible for issuing dividend checks each year. Once Partners reach the minimum 500 shares and become voting members, Patty and her team provide support when they decide what amount they want to keep purchasing. For Patty, the presence of all of these programs and support systems is just one indicator of The Group’s commitment to its customers and its employee-owners. Since the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery (FCMoD) opened in 2012, more than 550,000 people from all 50 states and 29 countries have visited; a reach that far exceeds expectations. “When we originally had our feasibility study done in 2008, they weren’t predicting six-figure annual visitation,” says Development Director Michael Allison. “The communities’ interest in hands-on, interactive exhibits and experiences, coupled with its growth, has contributed to FCMoD becoming a cornerstone institution for Northern Colorado.” Why is the museum such a hit with the community? Allison finds that families are drawn to the interactive educational exhibits and special programming. But he stresses, this museum isn’t just for kids. “We do a lot of adult programs [too]. We have some fun things in our Otterbox Digital Dome Theater — [for example], acoustic treatments and laser dome,” he says. And the collections, which include archival information as well as historical artifacts, are a great resource for community members of any age.

The Exhibits FCMoD’s exhibits cover just about everything from music to local history to wildlife biology. Year round, visitors will find the world’s only live black footed ferret display, a standing interactive music and sound exhibit, and a gallery full of artifacts and information about the region’s First Peoples as well as its agricultural history. In the OtterBox Digital Dome Theater, you can watch films about space exploration, the earth’s climate system, or the history of flight on a high resolution 360-degree screen. Creative types who want to use the electronic canvas for their own performances can receive training at the museum. A couple of times per year, FCMoD also brings in unique traveling exhibits. In 2017, the museum’s first major traveling exhibit about pterosaurs included skeleton displays, a visually stunning film in the dome theater, and the opportunity to virtually fly and fish as one of the ancient winged dinosaurs.

Coming up, FCMoD will be the first museum in Colorado to host National Geographic’s Photo Ark. Led by National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, the project aims to document every species living in the world’s zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, inspire action through education, and help save wildlife by supporting on-the-ground conservation efforts. The Photo Ark exhibit will be on display at FCMoD from October 20, 2018 to January 6, 2019.

Educational Programs In addition to its array of exhibits, FCMoD holds a range of educational programs throughout the year. Families will find weekend Discover Labs and Challenge Labs designed to encourage them to work together while exploring a monthly theme. Held each month, the Museum Takeover (free with admission) is a themed day with activities all over the museum. And during the summer, kids aged 3 to 15 can attend day camps with learning in science and history.

The Collections Finally, for community members looking to learn even more about the region, all of the collections are available for supervised on-site research. The FCMoD is the primary repository for historical artifacts and archives related to Fort Collins and the Cache la Poudre River Valley. The collection, begun in 1941, includes about 37,000 objects ranging from stone tools carved by the area’s earliest residents to diaries and logbooks from Camp Collins. The archives include photos, books, maps, newspapers, property logs, and oral histories.

Guests get to enjoy food and cocktails while interacting with some of the exhibits, and community sponsors get a high-profile marketing opportunity.
