“Recycling is really very much part of the culture of Fort Collins,” says Susie Gordon, Waste Reduction and Recycling Program Manager at The City’s Environmental Services Department. With ninety to ninety-five percent of single family residents using curbside recycling, just fifteen years after its original foray into recycling, the town has a handle on what Gordon refers to as “the curbside generation.” And now, the city is working to expand beyond single family homes to facilitate recycling for all its residents, regardless of where they live or work. “People are always saying ‘we want more opportunities to recycle more,’” Gordon says. When the City of Fort Collins opened the original recycling center nearly fifteen years ago, nobody anticipated its popularity or client loyalty. But over the

years, self-recycling has become a way of life for many. “[And] people continue to have aspirations for other types of materials to be recycled,” says Gordon. So the City began looking to other communities for models that could work in Fort Collins, and eventually built a program of its own. Gordon and the City of Fort Collins have envisioned the new recycling center as a “one-stop-shop for somebody cleaning out the garage or the basement,” says Gordon. “If you can load this all into the trailer or the trunk of the car, you can offload it into the appropriate bins or barrels… Over the next couple of months or year or two, it’ll become apparent whether this was the right match for what people were asking for. [This is a] good staging area for other types of recycling.”

Recycling at the New Center The center sits away from the road on a five-plus acre property at the Southwest corner of Timberline and Prospect. To access the site, head south on Timberline from Prospect, past the aluminum silos. The entrance is about halfway up the hill. The site holds two yards: one for conventional recyclables, the other for hard to recycle materials. Be sure to follow the specific guidelines posted at each section and do not bring trash! Conventional recyclables drop-off is free to the public and available seven days per week during daylight hours. Place curbside materials in the clearly marked green bins. Acceptable recyclables include: corrugated cardboard, brown paper bags, paperboard, phone books, low-grade paper, office paper, magazines, junk mail, bottles, cans, jars, newspapers, glass and newspapers. The Hard to Recycle Materials Yard is further west on the property, past the conventional yard. Head to the rear side of the site and pay the $5 drop-off fee at the gatehouse. Certain materials have an extra cost. Follow the signs to the appropriate area and an attendant will be on hand to help you through the process. What Happens Then? Though it’s easy to stop thinking about recycling the minute your soda can or cardboard box hits the bin, it’s a globally connected industry. This means that everything, from which items are accepted to the cost of recycling, is shaped by market trends. For example, says Gordon, “A lot of our pop bottles are made into polar fleece.” Right now, the City of Fort Collins sends recyclable materials to a variety of national and international mills, so the addition of new materials will depend on what there’s a long-term market for. “It’s cyclical. Linked to what’s going on with the global economy,” Gordon says. “So, we’ll be watching to see what’s the next big thing to recycle that’s sustainable.” But they’ve also got a goal for a different type of sustainability. “What we’d really love to be able to do is keep things in our region and community to be used again, [given] second lives… [The Timberline Recycling Center] sort of gives us a bit of a staging area to figure that out,” Gordon says.

Community gardens first sprang up in the US in 1890s in Detroit as part of social reform and city beautification efforts. In the subsequent years, these shared agricultural spaces grew in popularity. Spanning both World Wars and the Great Depression, the government promoted community gardens as a way to grow the domestic food supply, boost families’ self-sufficiency, and bring people together. Though their popularity faltered after World War II, community gardens have burst back on the scene as people prioritize access to fresh, local, and affordable food. “The benefit of the community garden is that it really reaches into diverse and multiple benefits for the gardeners and their families and their friends,” explained Mary Miller, Community Garden & Outreach Coordinator at The Gardens on Spring Creek. “It gets people outside and active. It improves their nutrition. It helps people move toward selfsufficiency. It builds community, putting people in contact

when it comes to supporting publicly accessible community gardens. “It’s resident-driven,” said Miller. “That’s the way it has always been and that’s the way we want it. It builds success...” The City of Fort Collins supported its first parkbased community garden several years ago at The Gardens on Spring Creek. But the thirty-five plots quickly filled up. “Spring Creek was overwhelmed and had long waitlists — as many as 90 people waiting for 35 plots,” Miller said. “So [we] did a proposal to the City to pilot community gardens throughout the city… We piloted the Community Gardens in the Parks in 2012 and 2013, trying to hit the four quadrants of the city and where there was a concentration of mixed housing.” Today, the program hosts over one-hundredtwenty gardening plots in seven parks: The Gardens on Spring Creek, Buckingham Park, Edora Park, English Ranch, Rogers Park, the Senior Center, and Rolland Moore Community Park. Starting next summer, a garden at the under-construction Southeast Community Park (also known as Two Silos Park) will add roughly twenty more spaces. Even with all these new options, aspiring community gardeners in Fort Collins still have to get in line. Current waitlists for 2017 run between forty and fifty people and some go into 2018. And while the desire is largely resident-driven, Miller notes, extra staff and materials mean each new garden still needs to fit in the city budget.

Paying it Forward Community gardens in Fort Collins go beyond the multifold benefits to participants thanks to programs that share the food and knowledge with the general populace and those in need. At Spring Creek, the threequarter acre Garden of Eatin’ grows all edible crops for use in educational and events programing such as Garden to Fork classes. The balance — seven thousand pounds in 2015 — is donated to the Food Bank of Larimer County. In addition, the Plant it Forward campaign urges growers throughout the city’s community gardens to donate excess produce to the food bank. “Gardeners are proud of their donations,” Miller said.

In addition to gardening their own plot, participants must contribute four hours to helping maintain shared spaces such as the shed, perimeter or compost bin.
