A
legendary course and picturesque location, Ptarmigan has come a long way since its slow beginning in 1986. The Source sat down with Dave Muth, Group Realtor and son of one of Ptarmigan’s developers, to get a sense of how Ptarmigan became what it is today and what makes the neighborhood special. A bumpy road pays off for Ptarmigan Ptarmigan’s founders set out in the 1980’s to create a community in the center of northern Colorado’s “golden triangle” – Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley. They recognized the beauty of the landscape, the appeal of mountain views and the prime location. Work began on the front 9 of the course in 1986, but the development soon ran out of money. It turned out, the founders were a little ahead of their time as the economy and Ptarmigan’s location weren’t yet all that they envisioned. They completed the back 9 in 1989, but things still weren’t looking great. Fast forward to a few years later and Southeast Fort Collins picked up momentum. Their investment started to pay off as the housing market picked up and Ptarmigan’s appeal as a community and a course lived up to expectations. Today, Ptarmigan is a well-established and energetic place for everyone from young families to out-of-state retirees. Jack Nicklaus signature course Although there is more to Ptarmigan than golf, we have to talk about how special the course is. Investors knew that they wanted a course that would be something new to the northern Colorado area so they enlisted the services of the legendary Jack Nicklaus.
