ail season is fast approaching and it’s out to get those old and tired roofs. Roofs are a piece of our homes that we don’t think about much – until it all goes wrong! Material
When choosing the material for your roof, there are several important considerations. Of course, cost is one of the main deciding factors in what kind of roof to install. Also think about the wind, fire risk and amount of precipitation in your area. Basic asphalt shingles – Cost effective asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material. The life expectancy of these shingles depends on many factors like wind, hail and other weather factors, but these shingles are definitely worth the reasonable price point. Wood shingles – Shingles also come in many other varieties. There are wood shingles in many types that can last 30-50 years. And shake shingles give a rougher look. Wooden roofs are not recommended for areas that are prone to wildfire. Slate shingles – Slate is durable and lasts as long as 50 years. It’s also stylish and fits with the look of historical homes. It costs a bit more than some other types of roofs, but you can also buy synthetic slate roofing materials to save a little.

Companies are getting really creative with color so just by browsing through some of their choices, you may discover a perfect color you hadn’t even thought of •• Both design features and color palettes are moving toward clean, sleek looks. Try starting with a neutral color on the walls (especially if you’re looking to sell) and then experiment with the colors of accessories like rugs, throw pillows and furniture. •• When you pick out your furniture, stick to solid colors for the larger pieces. Prints tend to go in and out of style, whereas a solid-colored sofa can be changed with just a new set of throw pillows or a smaller chair in a fun print.

Kate’s favorite websites for color inspiration: •• BenjaminMoore.com has a lovely website that explains color trends and has lots of fun pictures and ideas. •• Sherwin-Williams.com is the runner up for paint. As an added bonus, they are doing the entire color palette for Pottery Barn so you can coordinate your style. Jamie Koenig, of Get It Together Decorating, has been in business since 1998 so she has watched the colors change quite a bit over the years! She’s got great pointers for anyone who wants to make a statement with color: •• I rarely use color for an accent wall anymore as it makes the space feel smaller. •• I love the look of adding drapery panels to give that extra pop of color and another layer of texture to the room. •• I also do not like to ‘match’ all of the furniture in one space. If you have a brown leather sofa and love seat, add a patterned, fabric chair to change the feel. Throw pillows with different textures and fringes will enhance the space too. I love an area rug to add softness especially on all hardwood floors as it helps to bring the space together. •• Pastels seem to be the hardest for people to pick for their kids’ rooms. Keep in mind when selecting pastels they intensify greatly when put on an entire wall. Choosing a shade or two lighter than you think is always a better bet. •• The open concept floor plan should also flow in regards to color. I keep the same color throughout on all walls and change the look of each room with furniture pieces, art, and accessories. You can have great curb appeal, but don’t stop there. •• Choose furniture that is both comfortable and stylish with clean lines. Open loft ceilings are airy and make a room feel more open. Exposed beams are also popular and can either add a formal touch or rustic appeal. Koenig gave us a little insight into flooring trends as well, “Hardwood floors are replacing carpet on much of first levels. It gives that Great Room concept a better flow than chopping up flooring and is easier for cleaning up spills than carpet.” It’s all in the details – The little things are the most fun when designing any room. Mix and match color, texture and materials for the perfect combination. Koenig outlines some of her ideas for these small but significant items, “I love adding texture to every room as well. Plants, florals, and rugs are standard design items but by adding other elements such as metals, woods and stone it allows the room to balance out the simplicity of the neutrals.” The key to designing a perfect Great Room is to keep an open mind and get creative. Start small with a fresh coat of paint or a lovely area rug. Then draw inspiration from friends and family, photos, websites and magazines. Or consult an expert to help you put your ideas into action. And the final step is to sit back and enjoy your space with the people you care about!
