CHARITY SPOT: CHANGING PERCEPTIONS

By Rich Lee Part coffee shop, part upcycling workshop and emporium, we visit a remarkable community enterprise in Godalming that gives old furniture new life and provides a creative hub for people affected by disabilities… Long-time readers will know that we’ve been unapologetic about our love for the grassroots craft movement known as ‘Upcycling’. In essence, upcycling means taking worn out and unloved old furniture, ornaments and other household or garden objects and restoring them to new life and utility. But in the hands of many ‘upcyclers’, the process also instills those items with an expression of their own unique personality. A humble chest of drawers, for example, could be remade all kinds of elegant, charmingly quirky, radiantly colourful, or simply have its timeworn shabbiness brought to the fore as a quality to celebrate rather than reject. Upcycling saves on waste and provides a wonderful outlet for creativity. And while there are many purveyors of upcycling around Surrey, it would be hard to imagine one so uniquely special, nor as prodigiously talented, as the motley crew found on Godalming High Street at Changing Perceptions.

Born three years ago as an offshoot of the celebrated Godalming epilepsy charity, The Meath, Changing Perceptions is the brainchild of Fiona Collier. Fiona has worked with furniture for most of her career in addition to volunteering her time to help people with disabilities. After working with the charity, she became inspired to merge her two passions into a project that enabled the Meath’s clients to get together and learn new skills that directly benefit themselves and the community they live in. And if it could help change perceptions of complex epilepsy and associated physical and learning disabilities along the way, then that could only be a very good thing too. To visit Changing Perceptions, you first enter into a delightful coffee shop that also serves as a salesroom for some of the remarkable objects and furniture that emerge from the shop’s hub and heart: the workshop. Tucked further down the back of the shop, it’s here that I met Fiona and her team to experience Changing Perceptions for myself. “We prepare and paint old furniture provided by the general public to look more desirable,” explains Fiona as we walk around a central worktop surrounded by volunteers beavering away on a variety of projects. “Once the items are finished we sell them in the café. This project is multi-purpose

really: It’s connecting the Meath with the immediate community with an interesting, vibrant, different kind of activity. The pieces we produce are for anyone interested in their domestic environment, into upcycling and just like things that are a bit different, a bit quirky.” On one worktop, a volunteer is cleaning up an ornate metal outdoor chair, then coating it in chalk paint, turning it a lustrous powder blue. In another corner, a client was in the process of upholstering a full suite of chairs. He makes it look easy. He even makes it look sort of fun, and this is coming from someone who finds something as inane as hanging a picture frame a colossal ‘mare. Dotted around the shop are various items of furniture, some finished, some on their way, but all revealing the creativity and passion the volunteers bring to their work, from the tiniest pencil pot to an antique sofa. A merry cacophony of sanding, hammering, sawing and above all, laughter, permeates the whole place, making Changing Perceptions as infectious as it is fascinating. Fiona’s warm presence, and that of her team of experienced helpers, ensure that everyone feels like colleagues and never simply clients, all engaged in the same creative enterprise. “It all helps to make it a really inclusive project and help dispel the stigma

around people with disabilities - we prefer to say that we celebrate people’s abilities” she says. “It’s about making new friendships and learning new skills outside of a care environment.” Amy, 27, has been honing her upcycling talents here for the last two years. She has been living with complex epilepsy since the age of ten. She manages her condition with medication and is assisted by charities like the Meath to live a full and productive life. “The Meath and Changing Perceptions have helped to give me independence and enabled me to learn new things. They help me to look at the positive things I can do. Anything that involves arts and crafts, I love. I’ve got lots of friends here, too. It’s a really wonderful place.” The work Amy and the rest of the team produce has even begun to reach beyond their customer’s homes and out into the public in the form of handmade wildlife habitats to be strewn along Godalming’s ‘Willow Walk, from the Phillips Memorial to the Library, providing RSPB-approved homes for birds, and no doubt a source of pride for the local volunteers that built them. Before I left them to their work, Fiona couldn’t help but show off their latest acquisition, a laser cutter. It’s some serious kit and will enable them to produce more bespoke pieces for customers and even their own product line of decorations. With its keen eye

In fact, anyone with a hankering for some upcycling and painting of their own are very welcome here as Changing Perceptions run fun and friendly paint workshops that cover furniture preparation, ageing and distressing, the two-colour technique and waxing and finishing; all the techniques you’d need to put the chic into shabby. You can donate nearly any kind of furniture to be upcycled, although ideally solid wood and nothing too big. Or you can simply pop in to Changing Perceptions and relax with a superb coffee, a slice of cake and simply admire the works produced by an inspiring team of people and a truly remarkable community enterprise.

TALKING TO… SIMON AMSTELL

Following a series of acclaimed international tours, and the critical success of his film Carnage which screened earlier this year, comedian Simon Amstell’s fifth UK stand up tour, What is This?, rolls into G Live, Guildford on Saturday 4th November… Hi Simon. So since we last spoke two years ago, the world’s seen Brexit, the US election and all sorts of other craziness. How have you weathered it all? Well, while all that was happening, I was making a film called Carnage set in 2067. So I was spending all my time in a future where, for example, Trump was dead. So I was having a delightful time sitting in the future looking back at a time when things were more ridiculous (laughs.)

to put them in rehabilitation centres where they’re given the love they required when they were children, which may have stopped the crime being committed in the first place. But making Carnage was such hard work, trying to think about the future and how everything would work out, I was quite keen to start writing some standup comedy about Me again (laughs.) And then I get sick of me and want to talk about something else, so at some point I’ll feel the urge to say something about something that isn’t me.

Carnage takes an unsparingly funny look at society’s consumption of animals from the point of view of a future generation that’s entirely vegan. Is there no diet or lifestyle immune from your satire?

If you look at the trajectory of your career, we’ve seen you travel through Popworld, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Grandma’s House and now films like Carnage. Where’s it all heading?

I don’t think anyone can sit outside of satire. In the film, even the vegans were ridiculed lightly. But there is a diet where you can be outside of a ‘slave trade’. A safe space; one where you could feel good, your health would be improved as would climate change, and the animals will suffer less. That’s what you’d want, right?

Well, eventually I’ll die (laughs.) That’s definitely where it’s going. But yeah, I really like writing and directing. So I think if I could write and perform stand-up every few years, and write and direct a film every few years, I’ll be happy… before death takes me.

Has the success of Carnage emboldened you to examine more issues in film? There were moments where I thought, oh, why not take a look at the prison system? Why are there prisons? Surely if people need to be put somewhere we should be compassionate enough

So behind all of that, there’s been your stand-up comedy. What does it mean for you to have stand-up to return to? It means everything to me. It’s the thing that makes me independent. It’s the thing that makes me funny. And it’s where I go to find out who I am, which then bleeds into everything else I sign up to. If I can do stand-up comedy I

feel like I’m of use to the world. What I get from stand-up is that I can say something deeply personal and the audience responds to it positively; it makes me feel like I’m not alone. I think I’d feel really lost if I didn’t do stand-up comedy.

What’s your relationship with the celebrity that comes with what you do? In terms of fame, what I really want to be able to do is go to a restaurant and sit with the person and have a lovely time. But I also quite like it when someone else in the restaurant comes up to me and tells me something I’ve done is brilliant (laughs.) I quite like both those things.

And finally, your new tour What is This?... what is it? It’s a show that’s mainly about me (laughs.) I’ve been in a relationship for the last five years so there’s a bit about navigating what it means to be in a relationship rather than being single and lonely. There’s a lot about letting go of inhibitions and how one rather… illegal drug and being reborn in a sweat lodge helped. I talk about what it means to feel like an ordinary person – I don’t feel broken anymore, so what if I become some normal guy, which is very upsetting. And then, of course, there’s a bit about a sex party (laughs.)

Ray Mears, returns to Guildford’s G Live this autumn with his brand new tour, ‘Born to Go Wild’. We caught up with the boss of Bushcraft himself ahead of the tour to talk about what the wonders of our world can do for ourselves and for our spirit. You come to Guildford’s G Live almost exactly in the middle of your new tour, Born to Go Wild which takes in 31 dates this autumn. Naturally this kind of adventure differs enormously from your usual excursions – do you ever try to find similarities between the ‘tour life’ and that of your global adventures? No they’re completely different. I do keep a stove with me in the car - rather than necessarily going to a service station, I might find somewhere nice in the countryside to pull over and put on a brew. I like to keep an eye on what wildlife I’m passing when I’m travelling between places but it does become a bit of a blur after a while.

Your show will touch on themes of the wild and what it can do for the human spirit and creativity. What do you think the effect of not being amongst the wild ultimately has on the human spirit? I think that not having access to wild places diminishes the human spirit. There will be people that argue against that but I certainly believe that I think it’s good for our soul to be in wild places and particularly to look at a dark sky where we see lots of stars. It’s no wonder I think, that the world’s great civilisations and science was born in the desert where the stars are above us. To lie on your back and gaze up at the stars and to count the shooting stars and to wonder on the vastness of the universe reminds us how small and insignificant we are and what an incredible place we inhabit. I think it makes you think more deeply and when you think more deeply you feel more things more keenly within.

Do you think there will continue to be wild areas of the world that are completely untouched by human activity? I really hope so but that’s something that we have to work to preserve. The

biggest danger that is posed to us in terms of the preservation of wild places is our own apathy. If there’s someone reading what you’ve written who’s been to a wild place and been touched by it, it’s incumbent upon them to share that experience with people and make others know that there are places that can touch you profoundly in a spiritual way; and to argue for their restoration, their preservation and their maintenance. That been said, I don’t believe that these places should be pickled in aspic - we need to have access to them. There are some places in the world that are so special that we should only go and gaze and wonder, but there are other places where we should be able to access them and utilise natural resources and allow the dirt and the damp of the countryside to permeate our being.

You grew up in Surrey and live in Sussex – have you got a favourite area of wilderness in the south east? I’ve got several areas. I live in the High Weald which I think is remarkably special, but if you were say to me which is the place that touches me the most, it’s the North Downs, because I feel that that’s my tribal home. It’s interesting that I talk to you today because yesterday I went for a walk on the North Downs and I’m seeing plants I don’t normally see where I live now; Canterbury Barrels, things like that - it made me feel good inside to touch base with the species’ and habitat that I grew up in.

Practicing Bush craft can fill an individual with an enormous sense of pride and confidence in one’s ability. Can you think of a particular element of bush craft that still fills you with that sense of accomplishment? None of it. None of it does. It makes me feel humble. I think constantly of our ancestors who went before us and made these discoveries. Every time I discover something new, and I’m still discovering things new about our

countryside, I am sure our ancestors would have known those things. I think pride is something you experience early on in your education in Bushcraft, but the more deeply you go into it the more humble you feel. I was reading on a website recently, somebody claiming to be an expert in the subject, describes his knowledge as immense. I’m thinking ‘crikey’, I’ve been doing this almost 35 years and the only thing I can say is immense is the questions I’ve still got to answer. It’s not false modesty. It’s true. The more you learn, the more you realise you don’t know.

Are you able to tell us anything about your new series that is due to be aired this autumn? I’ve just made seven films for ITV over in Australia, looking at wild places in Australia and the wildlife you find there – it’s been great fun.

What can audiences look forward to on your new tour? You should know that we’re going to try, if we can, if we’re allowed to, to make fire on stage. I’ve been teaching Bushcraft for 35 years and the two things that I think are really important are skill, and fire is what I want to concentrate on and what it means. And the other is about a detailed knowledge of nature which I will utilise films from Australia to help illustrate my point. It will be a joy.

WHERE TO EAT: THE DYSART, PETERSHAM A fiercely talented kitchen and an unpretentious yet utterly inviting dining room at the Dysart in Petersham proved an experience we couldn’t resist… When the heat of summer subsides, and the gentle cool of autumn settles over the land, most people take the change of seasons in their stride. Alas, not me. By the middle of September, I’m so weary of lightweight lunches, svelte salads and prissy puddings, that I’m about ready to swan dive into a bog of sticky toffee goop and be done with it all. You might say I’m in a Fall mood. So when October rolls around, and menus change their colours like the leaves on the trees, heralding the earthy, hearty joys of autumnal cooking, it feels like the happiest of homecomings. Spring and summer dishes can make us soar, but only autumn and winter truly satisfy.

I could, of course, have stepped inside the magnificent timbered shell of the Dysart in Petersham at any time of the year, but the interior’s creamy mushroom tones felt predestined to match my seasonal disposition. The ghost of the pub that used to be the Dysart Arms still lingers in its central bar and columned cubbies, but the restaurant the Taylor family transformed it into back in 2004 is light years away from the local boozer it used to be. Natural stone, stripped back woods and soft pools of amber light bathing dove-grey walls and a grand piano envelop you in the Dysart’s languid, understated elegance. Perhaps the most profound effect on the Dysart’s evolution from gastropub to gastronomic destination had to be the arrival of Head Chef Kenneth Culhane in 2011. The roux scholarship winner’s travels through the kitchens of New York, Sydney, Dublin and the Loire Valley forged a unique appreciation for ingredients both exotic and local, and as a champion of the slow food movement, we were intrigued to experience what the chef’s progressive, international approach to classical cooking could offer.

A selection of pretty, perky canapes woke an ugly hunger, particularly a cube of polenta dabbed with something sharply citrus, an astringent finger snap to get our attention. But any complacency vanished when the charred mullet arrived next, its skin blistered to a lovely rustly crackling perched above kombu braised daikon and a brothy ginger and champagne sauce that was less sauce and more like the best conversationkiller I’ve ever tasted. We just stopped mid-flow, staring dumbly at each other, forks quivering in the air as we tried to comprehend the kaleidoscope of flavours that wheels around your palate at first taste. There is mineral and spice and acid in perfect balance and a soft, fresh heat, with deep notes of kaffir and fruits and a talented young chef’s adventures in far off lands beneath it all. Senses firmly awakened and autumn made a glorious appearance: a colourful garden of seasonal veg and foraged herbs, with local Petersham tomatoes, compressed beetroot, baby artichoke, roasted girolle mushroom; all perfectly nice by itself but the aha! moment arrived with the addition of a warming

brown butter broth for a great whack of umami. There followed nishiki rice risotto swimming in a pool of roast tomato jus, nutty and rich and laced with delicate chicken-of-the-woods mushrooms and basil pesto. On the strength of what we’d had so far, vegetarians would be well advised to hightail it here on the quick for Culhane’s dedicated vegetarian a la carte and tasting menus. What the man does with vegetables borders on magic. Stone bass sat in a glossy, verdant sauce that, we were told by the Dysart’s confident and convivial servers, contained over thirty ingredients. Not one of them would have been superfluous judging by the mellow sweetness that bloomed out in soft Asian tones, building in depth and presence and prompting surreptitious finger swipes at the end until the bowl shone empty. Most cooks have made their point with beef hung for 28 days, but not here. A dish featuring a plinth of exquisitely sweet shoulder and fillet aged 70 days for insane flavour and the most buttery texture threatened to overwhelm me

entirely, especially given the shoulder’s mirror-sheen sticky glaze and the most remarkable mustard miso sauce pooled over the fillet. Punchy and bold and layered with lemon and a butterscotch background, it was astonishing and yet, amazingly, never overpowered the beef. With silky confit heritage and butterengorged mash potato, my dreams of the season had come true. No less deft were desserts, with burnt apple granita, blackberry sorbet and sesame tuile followed by a Black forest financier, kirsch crème diplomat and cherry sorbet. That this tasting menu was threaded through with some outstanding wines to complement each dish to a tee is standard for the Dysart, a place brimming with quiet confidence and well-oiled expertise and a chef working at the height of his powers. We could argue about Petersham sitting in either London or Surrey (depends, informally, which side of the river you hail from, so we’re calling it for our county), but there can be no doubt that the Dysart should be an essential destination for diners, wherever they live.

INGREDIENTS •

750g minced venison

•

4 tsp Reuben’s Winter Rub

•

1/2 red cabbage, finely sliced

1/4 tsp mixed spice 1/2 tsp brown sugar Squeeze of orange 4 Tbsp red wine vinegar

•

75g blue cheese

•

100ml sour cream

•

Small handful fresh chives, finely sliced

•

4 burger buns

(we love Norbury Blue, Surrey’s only cheesemaker!)

METHOD For the red cabbage slaw: • Mix the mixed spice, brown sugar, orange and red wine vinegar in a small bowl • Toss with the finely sliced red cabbage. For the blue cheese sauce: • Crumble the blue cheese with your hands, then mix in the sour cream and chives. For the burger patties: •

Mix the venison and Reuben’s Winter Rub in a bowl and divide the mixture into 4 burgers, shaping them with your hands.

Fry the patties in a hot pan for 4-5 minutes on each side (so that they’re still a little pink inside). Cook for longer if desired.

•

Pop the venison burger in a burger bun, top with the red cabbage slaw and the blue cheese, and enjoy!

With its dashing blend of design, comfort and performance, the new Peugeot 308 GT sits at the pinnacle of Peugeot’s 308 line, making it true a contender in its class…

of the vehicle and further inside whilst remaining uniquely sleek and modern throughout.

When it comes to modern family hatchbacks, the Peugeot 308 and previous iterations have long been nipping at the heels of rivals like the VW Golf or Ford focus. But with the arrival this year of the new look 308 family, and particularly the GT model I took out for a spin from Robins and Day Peugeot in Hurtmore, it looks like the French car maker finally have a best in class on their hands.

That function can be found, naturally, baked into the Peugeot’s new interactive dashboard, or I-cockpit, an expansive digital suite that puts all the car’s non-driving controls at your fingertips. Connecting devices is easy, as is operating the digital radio - there’s an additional column stalk for the most commonly used audio controls - adjusting air conditioning, SOS assistance and many other features. In fact, in an effort to clean up the cabin as far as possible, manual buttons and dials have been reduced to virtually zero. Even the steering wheel has been compacted significantly, which results in a very lean and tactile responsiveness, although it took a little getting used to. Hey, that’s progress.

On first impressions, though, the 308 feels as familiar as an old friend, but look closer and you see that the new 308 has received lavish attention to every detail, no matter how miniscule. Having been developed along the same aesthetic theme as its 3008 and similar cousins, the 308 has seen its front bumper and radiator grille take on an angular brutishness that exudes attitude and performance, with the LED headlights given a pleasingly feral aspect. Those hard lines soften along the silhouette

The materials used inside feel suitably deluxe, even the plastics, with liberal use of metallic highlights. The 308 has never been more comfortable either. The large panoramic fixed cielo glass roof can make every road trip more of a spectacle, while the 3D Connected Navigation – that’s satnav to you and us – makes navigating your journey a breeze.

Out on the road however, the Peugeot 308 GT flows down highways with liquid smoothness, the super-efficient new 1.6L THP 205hp petrol engine matched to a 6-speed manual (2.0L BlueHDI 180

I took it up and down and around nearly every road I knew of in the Surrey hills, and found the car’s squat agility very impressive thanks to the absorbent suspension, making navigating the twistiest turns and tightest corners a joy. All this makes the Peugeot 308 a car that should appeal to all drivers, regardless which product in the line they choose. It makes for an efficient runner for the school or shopping run, or a voracious tourer on long haul road trips owing to the improved fuel consumption. The GT model I tried provided all the grunt and fun you could ask from a hatchback, and with its deft blend of design and performance, surely sits at the pinnacle of Peugeot’s 308 line and the worth of any other car in its class.

Dig out your stripes and stand out from the herd in animal inspired fancy dress – and help WWF raise money to protect endangered and iconic wildlife and their habitats around the world. Loads of adults will be getting involved at work up and down the country and WWF wants you to get involved at school. All you need to do is wear an animal inspired fancy dress outfit to school in exchange for a small donation and ask your teacher to register online for Wear it Wild. If your school is not yet planning to hold a Wear it Wild day, why not tear this page out and take it to your teacher? Make sure you ask your teachers to register for Wear it Wild at wwfwearitwild. education.co.uk to receive free classroom activities so you can have fun exploring environmental issues and learning about wildlife whilst you raise money to for WWF’s vital work around the world. A Wear it Wild day is very easy to organise and even if your school can’t do it on Friday 20 October, you can fundraise at any time.

WHY WEAR IT WILD?

Did you know that since 1970, wildlife populations have fallen by more than half? (58% to be exact!) But with your help, we can make a difference and WWF is working hard to ensure that wild populations of iconic species such as tigers, rhinos and gorillas are protected and can thrive in the future. 95% of wild tigers have disappeared since the start of the 20th century, there are now just 3,900 left and 20,000 African elephants are poached every year for their ivory. If current trends continue wildlife populations could decline by 67% by 2020. Supporting conservation work is more important than ever and we need your help right now.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Loss of habitat: A huge amount of forests have been cut down for timber, farming and to build roads and railways. Conflict with people: As the human population increases, we’re moving into closer contact with wild animals. This can lead to animals being killed by people protecting their homes and livelihoods. Poaching: Some wildlife is poached (illegally killed) for their skins, horns, tusks and other body parts. They are seen as status symbols or used in traditional Asian medicine. Climate change: Our planet is warming faster than at any time in the past 10,000 years meaning that weather patterns and ecosystems are changing more quickly than animals can adapt.

• £5 could pay for a first aid kit for an anti-poaching patrol member in the Western Ghats in India, home to a large population of wild tigers. • £10 could pay for one day’s training for a sniffer dog in Nepal’s Chitwan National Park, trained to sniff out smuggled wildlife parts. • £20 could pay for one windproof jacket for a ranger patrolling and monitoring a protected area in the Terai Arc, Nepal, home to wild tigers, elephants and rhinos. • £250 could pay for a pair of binoculars for rhino monitoring.

BIG Draw

The world’s biggest drawing festival returns to Surrey this October, with a bumper programme of free workshops for all the family. Part of The Campaign for Drawing’s hugely successful initiative Guildford’s Big Draw is run by Guildford Borough Council in partnership with local artists and venues. Taking this year’s national Big Draw theme ‘Living lines’ as a starting point, artists will be providing free, accessible, high quality and creative activities across the borough throughout October.

These workshops are designed to let participants explore new and creative ideas and cater for those who love arts and crafts and for those who don’t but are willing to give it a go! Anyone can join in whatever their age and participants can work individually or collectively as a group. There is no limit to how many free Big Draw activities people can take part in so why not try them all!

RECIPE: BY THE NATURAL COOK COMPANY HEALTHY HALLOWEEN BLISS BALLS Halloween is typically swimming with sweets and treats that are high in processed sugar. Here at The Natural Cook Company we have come up with a fun but healthy recipe for children to make that contains no processed sugar at all, but is sweet, delicious and great fun to make! Who wouldn’t want to eat a cute Halloween cat or a scary pumpkin?

INGREDIENTS •

65g dates, pitted, pre-soaked and strained

•

4 tbsp hot water

•

4 tbsp maple syrup

•

1 tsp pure vanilla extract (or ½ tsp raw ground vanilla bean)

•

130g instant oats

•

65g desiccated coconut

•

Additional 130g instant oats

FOR THE COATING: •

Desiccated coconut

•

Orange & black food colouring

TO DECORATE •

Sprinkles, black icing, and black and green card cut into shapes (not edible)

METHOD 1. Place all ingredients in a food processor, except the additional cup of oats, and process the mixture to combine. 2. Add the remaining oats in two batches and process again. The mixture should be sticky but not too wet, if too wet add more oats 3. Make the coating by putting the desiccated coconut and a couple of drops of food colouring into a plastic food bag, then scrunching until the coconut is evenly coloured 4. Take out 1 tablespoon of the oat mixture and roll into a ball with your hands. Roll each ball in the coloured coconut to lightly coat and place on a plate, then decorate with ears, whiskers or pumpkin tops with shapes cut out of the card (make sure you remove the card before consuming!)
