c CHRISTMAS WITH WWF ADOPT AN ELEPHANT WITH WWF THIS CHRISTMAS There has been a staggering decline in the number of African and Asian elephants left in the wild. Iconic animals like African elephants are significantly threatened by poaching due to the unprecedented growth in Illegal Wildlife Trade. The trade in ivory alone is responsible for overturning decades of conservation successes, with 1 African elephant killed every 26 minutes. Asian elephants are critically endangered with only 2,800 left in the wild. Their main threat to existence is human elephant conflict and habitat loss, with Asia’s human population growing; more and more wildlife habitat is lost or fragmented. WWF is working closely with TRAFFIC on anti-poaching initiatives as well as CITES and the United Nations to achieve new legislations. They help fund our work to protect elephant habitat, reduce poaching and address human-elephant conflict. They also help fund other vital work around the world. The trading of ivory has meant that 55 African elephants are senselessly killed each day. Just for tusks. This Christmas, WWF would like you to remember our friendly giants and adopt an elephant. Adoptions help fund work to protect elephant habitat, reduce poaching and address human-elephant conflict. You’ll also receive a cute, cuddly toy which makes a perfect gift for Christmas.

SHOP FOR CHRISTMAS ONLINE AT WWF
Buying Christmas presents is always a challenge, especially if you consider the impact of the things we buy on the natural world. Inspired by this, WWF have created a new online range of planet friendly products inspired by the natural world, and their iconic panda logo. What’s even better is the story behind some of these fantastic planet-friendly products. Take their snare wire bracelets made by women whose workshop is located on a well-trodden elephant path in Mfuwe, in the remote Zambian bush. The wire is collected by the anti-poaching patrols, and made into beautiful jewellery, thereby protecting the wildlife and providing an income. Or how about a fabulous colouring book featuring some of the world’s iconic species. The book was designed by Emma Walling, an art student passionate about the charity’s work. Each item available is sourced and manufactured to the most exacting sustainability standards. This includes the fabulous Christmas cards and panda wrapping paper which are 100% FSC, and will make sure your gifts look really stylish under the tree this year. Items can be bought at the online shop – shop.wwf.org.uk, from t-shirts to phone cases and make up bags - there is something for everyone!

HELPING HANDS: THE DIFFERENCE VOLUNTEERS MAKE For many of us the term ‘service’ might mean a trip to church or other place of worship. And for some it used to mean that; a distant childhood memory of heading to the village church on Sunday mornings. But this month we wanted to talk about a different type of service, one that spans all beliefs, from Atheist to Zoroastrianism. That’s service in the sense of volunteering. More and more people are volunteering, with an awful lot of us in Surrey and across the UK getting involved in some form of charity work. So why do they volunteer and why should you? First of all, by volunteering you can give something of yourself and make a huge difference towards your local community. Secondly, while you’re doing this there is no
doubt that you will be learning new skills. Oh and thirdly you’re going to be improving your health and well-being. So there are great benefits to yourself as well as for the charities and causes you choose to support. You may have some key skill that you’ve hitherto thought benign or run-of-the-mill but actually could be a missing cog in their machine. One can understand what a doctor, nurse or chef could bring to the party skill-wise but actually, the fact that you’re, say, an accomplished accountant, or an ace at DIY, or a keen gardener, might be something that a charity desperately needs. Charities can significantly reduce the daily costs of what they do by channelling the kindness and dedication of their volunteers and supporters, and yet the value of what they can barely be measured financially. This is why volunteering is so important, not only for ourselves or the charities but to society too. We all totally recognise that volunteers give something amazing back to the community and we all are so thankful for their on-going hard work. So why not jump on board and come on in for the big win?

TALKING TO… THE DARKNESS Following the release of their acclaimed fifth album, Pinewood Smile, bombastic rockers The Darkness are bringing their juggernaut of face-melting riffs, swaggering showmanship and biting humour to G Live, Guildford on 5th December. We spoke to bassist and owner of the best rock-fro in the business, Frankie Poullaine…
ENTERTAINMENT
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment
Hey Frankie. It’s been a crazy journey for the band since you burst on the scene with Permission to Land in 2003. With all the ensuing rock ‘n’ roll ups and downs, and subsequent Darkness reunions and comebacks behind you, how is the chemistry within the band nowadays? We’ve worked through the problems we’d had before, corrected everything and I think we’ve got control and feel empowered now. We’ve got a great label behind us, Cooking Vinyl, and everything’s feeling harmonious. Our drummer Rufus Taylor [son of Queen’s Roger Taylor] has brought a lot of great new energy… ‘blonde energy’ for the most part (laughs.)
Last of Our Kind in 2015 was a rallying cry for rock n roll and a pithy protest against bland EDM and auto-tuned plonk. It was also infested with crazy Nordic imagery, because Vikings. Is there any kind of concept that runs through Pinewood Smile? Is there a concept? Probably not, but I guess it was always going to be anarchic, taking on things that people think are in bad taste and making it fun and enjoyable. So there’s a punk protest song [Southern Trains] that people wouldn’t normally associate with us and a country duet with Justin taking the female lead and Rufus taking the male lead on Stampede of Love, about two overweight people falling in love. It’s not making fun of their weight but it’s actually quite heartwarming and nice. Justin’s lyrics are very clever but Rufus also contributed some lyrics to it and it really works well.
Rock bands have always hit out at institutions, but it’s surprisingly specific to have taken a shiv to Southern Rail, although us Surrey folk would certainly support you. Which of you had that particular axe to grind?
It’s like social realism. It shows what’s going on in the background and what we’re like as people, and the relationships we have with each other and our fans. It’s also about a band struggling away playing a form of music that not many people care about anymore. So there’s definitely struggle and passion involved. And against all the odds we’re still doing it. With talking heads like Jack Black and Nick Cage, and a director who happens to be one of the top fashion photographers in the world, I think it’s going to be quite surreal.
What was it like supporting Guns ‘n’ Roses earlier this year? We played to 130,000 people in Italy, on a racetrack, in 35-degree heat; the Italians are amazing people, to wait in that heat. There’s an innocence to Italian people as well, and that’s maybe why they’re so easily corrupted? We’ve met Slash and Duffy before, and they’d pop up and say hi from time to time. We’ve never met Axl, but then not a lot of people have. He’s got the top job, a lot of pressure on him, so he tends to keep to himself.
With five albums in the bank and such a rich catalogue now, how on earth do you choose your set lists? We’re quite ruthless in the way that we select songs. There’s no sentiment, we just go for the ones that have the most excitement, relevance and freshness. Basically, the ones that are the most rock and roll, that’s what it boils down to: we’re a rock and roll band. Mostly, we choose the sexiest songs, because what is rock and roll if not about sex?
All of us but especially Dan and Justin. They would travel to our rehearsals in Putney from Horsham, and they’d always arrive late and in a bad mood. Then one day Dan was in such a bad mood that he started playing the riff on Southern Trains, and then we all thought let’s be real, be direct and tell it like it is. The problem with people in the south of England is they don’t protest, they just whinge a bit and don’t do anything. I know there’s bigger problems in the world than just a train company, but we did it and it’s made the papers and really got people talking about it.
You’re soon to release a documentary. Should we expect a circus of substancefuelled mayhem and hard rock lunacy, or have the Darkness truly seen the light?
By Rich Lee
Well it’s going be more like a psychological study of us and our fans. It’s not glamourous – some of it is even uncomfortable to watch.
The Darkness perform at G Live, Guildford on Tuesday 5th December. Head to glive. co.uk for tickets and follow the band at thedarknesslive.com

TALKING TO… JUDY CORNWELL Having started her career in Pantomime at the age of 15, much loved star of the stage and screen, not to mention accomplished novelist, Judy Cornwell comes to Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford to play Fairy Bowbells in the theatre’s seasonal showstopper Dick Whittington. We caught up with Judy to talk about her remarkable career.
You come to Yvonne Arnaud in Guildford this December to play Fairy Bowbells in the classic fairy tale Dick Whittington… Well I was there playing Miss Marple in 2015 and that’s when I met Jamie Barber (Director), who’s just lovely. He said to me, ‘do you want to come and be a fairy?’ I said, ‘oh, do you know that would be lovely actually, I just fancy being a fairy’. So I talked to the producer, who had nearly got the script ready and I suggested a few things in it. It’s a lovely cast – we all met each other for a photo opportunity and of course Jamie provided lovely sandwiches – he always does, he’s just brilliant like that. I just love working there. Having gone all over the country in 2015/16 playing Miss Marple, the theatres where the councils have taken over are not the same, whereas Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud is a proper theatre, the dressing rooms are lovely and they look after you. I’m looking forward to it. And I’m switching the Christmas lights on for Guildford High Street, which I’m really looking forward to, I’ve always wanted to do that.
ENTERTAINMENT
all; you’ve got your dancers, singers and comics and really it is for children and for parents bringing their children and it’s got to be simple and fun hasn’t it? Although there are some different types of pantomimes that go out now, a lot of people spend ages looking for the old style pantomime and that is what we will be giving them and I prefer that rather than a trendy thing. All the children love it, because you ask them things and they have to join in and all that sort of thing. What is lovely is that they do one show in Guildford for children who have difficulties, which I think is wonderful and also terribly important for those parents too.
You played Mrs Claus in the hit Santa Claus The Movie, a film that has created much joy for many viewers. What are your memories of making that movie? Well it’s a proper, proper Christmas story isn’t it? We had such fun doing that actually. In fact, it’s funny, because Roger Moore was filming 007 on one stage and we were over on another stage so we all used to hear the gossip from each other’s films. I can tell you, anybody who says, ‘oh those poor reindeer in that snow storm’ – rubbish. Those animals were totally looked after and nothing to do with the snow storm. It was the poor puppeteers who were inside the reindeer costumes and the poor actors, David Huddleston (Santa Claus) and myself, who were blasted with those fans and plastic snow. It was terrifying because we had to do that for a couple of days. It was very difficult to speak because you didn’t want to swallow the plastic or breathe it in. By the end, the producers were so thrilled with us we were given hampers from Fortnum & Mason, which was so exciting because I had never had one. It was a friendly, lovely thing and I kept in touch with David Huddleston and I loved Dudley Moore, he was so lovely and naughty and he always played tricks on David Huddleston.
By Alex D’Arcy
Pantomimes are notoriously labour intensive, with some days seeing no less than 3 performances – how do you cope? They’re hard going! The rest of the cast are much younger than me, I’ll be 78 in February so I shall sleep between shows as I have a little bed in my dressing room which is what I usually do anyway. But I live on sausage rolls, I just love sausage rolls and they’re a wonderful pick me up between shows. On a matinee day I have a good breakfast and then have something like a sausage roll between my shows. If it’s just one show a day then I can have a proper lunch, but I have to watch my diet when I’m working.
You are of course no stranger to Pantomime and indeed started your career amongst the festive furore as a dancer and singer in pantos – has much changed in the pantomime game since you first entered the fray? Oh I started in pantomime 63 years ago. I was a dancer and I watched the Cinderella part from the wings. She went ill and I took over at the age of 15 and that was 63 years ago and I’ve worked ever since. Pantomime hasn’t changed at

While there is no charge to see the reindeer, visitors are encouraged to give their spare change in collection buckets at the enclosure. Donations in 2016 totalled nearly £3,000 and went to help Carer Support Elmbridge continue their vital work with unpaid carers in the borough. ON THE GO: HUMMINGBIRD BAKERY, GUILDFORD
Since launching in Guildford in the summer, the town’s newest American style bakery and cafe hasn’t stopped drawing dessert lovers to its cheery space and irresistible baked goods… Could there be a more glorious delivery system for sugar, fat and carbs than the cupcake? If the past few years of cupcake fever have proved anything, it’s that a humble round of sponge cake and icing can be infused with so many looks and flavours that the possibilities are seemingly endless. It’s no wonder that a dessert once relegated to children’s cookery lessons has gone on to take over the hungry imaginations of grownups around the UK. One of the prime movers behind the cupcakes’s renaissance was a bold little start-up called the Hummingbird Bakery, which launched in London in 2004 with the simple aim of bringing the wholesome indulgence inherent in American baking to the British high street. 13 years and seven stores later, as well as a run of bestselling recipe books that helped inspire the cupcake craze in the first place, Hummingbird Bakery have grown nicely into their role as a genuinely unique addition to every town they pop up in. Indeed, when the Guildford branch
opened in August, North Street saw 100s-long queues of sweet-toothed fans eagerly line-up to fall on their famous confections (a 1000 free cupcake giveaway might have helped.) Even after the opening buzz has settled, customers still regularly clog the doors of a weekend morning. And after one bite into a ridiculously rich and moist cupcake, brownie or layer cake, it’s blissfully obvious what all the fuss is about.
eye-wateringly attractive, it’s enough to make a home baker weep. A wiser course of action, of course, would be to simply order up your favourite slice and a cup of Illy’s coffee – made to barista standards by the shop’s warm and friendly team, grab a table in the bright and colourful lounge area and treat yourself in one of the best ways devised by humankind: with something sweet, rich and crumbly and a jolt of superb coffee to wash it down with.
Flavours both familiar and fanciful abound, from boldly salted caramel to luscious red velvet, from Nutella to crushed biscuits and a decadently dark and dense concoction with a cheesecake centre. And that’s just the cupcakes. Each is baked to perfection, with a light and airy sponge and silky-rich cream cheese or (real) butter frosting, though none taste as cloyingly sweet as some other brands do. Special seasonal inventions spring up regularly – we visited in October just in time for a variety of delicious pumpkinspiked cakes, pies and brownies, laced with cinnamon and chai.
Or, if you’re on the go or just far away, the final feather in the Hummingbird Bakery’s winning cap has to be their delivery service for customers within five miles, or ability to order ahead and pick up at a time that suits you. And take it from our own experience: come to your workplace brandishing a selection box of Hummingbird goodies and let the kudos hit you like a happy tidal wave. (Just remember to stash one for yourself!)
Elsewhere at the counter, you’ll find all kinds of irresistible cakes, pies and tray bakes from rainbow cakes to Kentucky bourbon bundts, dense and creamy American-style cheesecakes, a chocolate mayonnaise cake, lemon raspberry ripple, chocolate salted caramel, carrot cakes and ginger layer cakes, as well as equally enticing gluten free options. And it’s all so

By Rich Lee
THE STEPHAN LANGTON INN, FRIDAY STREET Surrey’s most tuckedaway pub might also be one of its best when it comes to no-nonsense, hearty British food… If you live in a place for long enough, you might eventually get the feeling that surprises begin to get thinner on the ground. Though hardly short on buzzing towns, serene villages and gorgeous countryside, having lived in Surrey for over 30 years, I find myself questioning whether I’ve exhausted all the bucolic boltholes and hidden secrets the county has to offer. Maybe, I wonder foolishly, it’s time I cut back on my food miles in my constant search for the new. But then I hear, for the first time, of a hidden hamlet called Friday Street ensconced in the darkest heart of the Surrey Hills and adventure beckons anew. And if that adventure happens to have a meal at the beginning, middle or end, then so much the better, especially when that meal can be found
at an award-winning pub restaurant with a fierce devotion to local produce and honest British dishes. Such is the Stephan Langton inn’s reputation; a pub given a bold new lease of life in 2015 thanks to two locals, Anneliese Cameron and fiancé Lee Nicholls, founder of the celebrated Tillingbourne Brewery nearby, who saw the pub’s potential and set about bringing it back to relevance once again. To find the Stephan Langton, though, you must first find Friday Street, which means taking a right past Abinger and into deep Wotton country and the knotted, coiling tree tunnels that make up the backroads and bowels of the Surrey Hills. A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it left turn sends you rattling along a wooded track that appears to be leading you into Narnia or Middle Earth, until you finally emerge in Friday Street and the tranquil vista of a glassy lake fringed by forest ablaze with autumnal colours. With only a tiny cluster of homesteads amid all this seclusion, it’s remarkable that an inn even exists here at all. The Stephan Langton Inn, named after an Archbishop of Canterbury (1207 –
1228), perches over the lane, beckoning travellers inside as it has for generations. Simple, unaffected décor throughout, warm greys trimmed with timber, and a preponderance of happy dogs lounging by the bar makes it feel like the homely, rustic escape it truly is. Although there’s hardly a gastropub around that doesn’t bark its fondness for local produce, it’s evident that the Stephan Langton’s owners and Head Chef Gerry Dee recognise their unique position in the bosom of the Surrey Hills and absolutely pack their menus with the best producers around: Bread from Chalk Hills Bakery in Reigate, meat from Rawlings of Cranleigh, game from Wotton Estate, smoked fish from Tillingbourne Trout Farm and preserves from Pond Cottage just a few yards away being just a few. Being the hopeless gluttons that we are, we padded our starters with a little something from the bar menu: namely, three rusty-red scotched quail eggs, wrapped in chorizo, black pudding and ‘Hog Troll’ beer-infused sausage – each was irresistible, especially when swiped through a pot of mustard mayo. There

followed salmon given some delicate smoke from Tillingbourne Farm atop a blini kissed gold from the pan and perfumed with dill, topped with avruga caviar; an extra touch of class for an already classy little dish. For myself, a pot of chicken liver pate was silkysmooth and super-rich and all kinds of moreish, especially when paired with a little apricot preserve to cut through it and a generous pile of crisp and golden sourdough slices to spread it all over (take note all you pates and terrines served elsewhere, and your miserly shards of gone-too-fast toast!). A special of venison stew and winter veg felt mandatory given the season and surroundings. It also proved utterly delicious, with tender pieces of sweet game bathed in a delicately spiced, gravy and blistered boulders of roast new potatoes, carrots and squash soaking up all that earthy flavour. I couldn’t resist the Stephan Langton’s famous namesake Archbishop’s Pie, which brought rude chunks of juicy steak, flavoursome pheasant and inky mushrooms spilling from the kind of robust shortcrust that many restaurants don’t seem to have the minerals to make
anymore; biscuit-thick and a delightful reminder of when pies were pies and not just limp parcels of meat and sauce. I’ll admit that I’m guilty to the point of tedium of bemoaning the lack of imagination that forces many English pubs to push such tired, lazy puds like chocolate brownies and sticky toffee puddings on their menus. Thing is, from a pub so committed to the hearty, humble – even traditional- British fare as the Stephan Langton is, some sticky toffee stodge is precisely what I want at this time of year. And theirs didn’t let me down at all; just a rich, warming slab of nutty-sweet sponge doused in oozing caramel and some ice cream to cut through the treacle. Hardly a closely-kept secret, the out-of-the-way Stephan Langton Inn is nevertheless one of the most satisfying discoveries Surrey still has to offer for the adventurous foodie. Going far beyond mere lip-service to local produce, the pub’s unpretentious yet exquisite cooking captures the flavours of the Surrey Hills perhaps better than just about anyone.

Recipe: CHRISTMAS STOLLEN BY BAKE WITH JACK Jack Sturgess is the award-winning chef behind Bake with Jack, Surrey’s own foodie phenomenon that has got loaf lovers baking amazing artisanal bread in their own homes. For the perfect slice of Christmas, Jack shares his recipe for a seasonal classic: the glorious German fruit loaf, Stollen. “This recipe makes two stollen which is awesome because it means you can give one to a friend or pop it round to a neighbour. Learn to make this with me in my Christmas Bread Demonstration on November 16th, 7pm – 9pm. Tickets are £39, including tastings and mulled wine. Or make this and many more Christmas treats at home with my hands-on Christmas Bread Making Course!”
Difficulty: Medium This recipe makes 2 loaves or 9-12 Buns in around 4 hours Method 1.
First, soak your raisins, sultanas and cranberries in boiling water from the kettle for 10 minutes. Then drain and set aside to cool
2.
Measure your flour, sugar, salt, and spice into a large bowl. Mix it all together then add the butter broken up into pieces.
3.
Weigh the milk into a jug, and pop in the microwave for 30 seconds or so to take the chill off. Whether you are using fresh or dry yeast, pop it into the milk and let it dissolve.
4.
Pour the liquid into the bowl and mix everything together until it comes together into a dough, turn it out onto the table. Knead the dough on a clean table for 8 minutes resisting the urge to dust it with flour. It will be sticky at first but use a dough scraper to have a tidy every now and again, and to loosen the dough from the table.
5.
Next, dust the table lightly, spread out the dough and sprinkle over the soaked fruit and peel. Roll them up inside and continue kneading until they are evenly dispersed. Shape the dough into a ball, using a light dusting of flour, and place it back into the bowl. Dust again, cover with a clean cloth, and leave to rest at room temperature for 90 minutes
6.
When your dough has puffed up nicely, dust the table with a little flour and turn the dough out onto it. Press the dough all over with your fingers and knuckles to de-gas, and then divide it into two pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
7.
Cut your marzipan into two pieces, 120g each. Roll each piece into a sausage roughly 15cm long. Take one of your dough balls and push a rolling pin down horizontally across the centre. Roll up and down slightly creating a flattened area in the middle about 10cm wide, with a bulge of dough at the top and bottom.
8.
Lay your marzipan sausage in that gap, and fold the top part of the dough over the top so the two bulges meet. Press your fingers down between the rolled-up marzipan and the two pieces of dough to seal the gap and transfer to a large parchment lined baking tray. Shape up the second stollen, and place it on the tray next to the first. Give it plenty of room to expand.
9.
Cover again with a clean cloth and allow 60-90 minutes for them to prove up, towards the end of proving preheat the oven to 180°C Fan/Gas Mark 7. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the two stollen from the oven, and carefully transfer them to a wire rack
10. Dip a pastry brush into your soft butter and brush all over while the stollen is still hot. Then dust liberally with icing sugar and leave to cool before slicing.
Ingredients
For the dough 500g Strong white bread flour 8g Salt 80g Sugar 1tbsp Mixed spice 100g Room temperature butter 25g Fresh yeast or 2 x 7g sachets of dry fast action yeast 200g Room temperature milk 1 Medium Egg

QUESTION I can't afford to heat our conservatory in winter, so we don't use it. Can you help?
ANSWER It's all down to the heat loss through your conservatory roof. You can fit blinds but the best solution is to replace the roof with a lightweight, fully insulated Guardian™ roof. It will also help to keep your conservatory comfortable during summer.
Home owners often ask us how they can make the most of their home. Today we look at conservatories and the highly rated Guardian™ roof.
Want the look of a traditional timber window frame with all the advantages of PVCu? The Liniar flush sash window was developed for the more traditional property where the sash needed to be fitted flush into the frame – and which, with foiling, could look just like a timber window.

FARNHAM MALTINGS Bridge Square | 01252 745444
The Maltings is a collection of buildings set in the heart of Farnham. Their aim is to provide a place in which people can enjoy and experience every area of the arts. Where people can imagine, create and discover new talents and interests, or encourage existing passions. The diverse space that makes up this extraordinary venue houses everything you can imagine or want from an arts centre, including - to list a few - cinema, theatre, workshops and exhibitions. The list goes on. Throughout the year there are also a number of festivals that take place, including leading craft festivals thread and unravel, the annual Christmas Fair and the hugely popular Beerex festival in Spring. There are so many activities and events that no matter what your interest or ability you will be able to find something for you.
PLAYTIME GO APE!
Alice Holt, Bucks Horn Oak 0845 0949046 When you visit a venue with the tag line ‘Live Life Adventurously’, it’s fair to say that your day out is unlikely to be a ‘sit-down, chill out’ affair. When said venue is actually called ‘Go Ape’, you know that you are going to be exerting a good deal of energy. And this is very much the case in Alice Holt Forest near Farnham, where a good deal of outdoor fun, laughter and possibly even a bit of family time will be had… So; what to expect? Well, the old adage of ‘something for the family’ applies strongly here, with gorillas (over 18s) and baboons (10 – 17, over 1.4m tall) swinging from tree to tree in perfect harmony. Whether you want to ‘monkey around’ in cool adventure playgrounds, ride through the forest on the great bike trails or enjoy the classic Tree Top Adventure, you’ll have a wonderful day out.
SWEET TREATS PRETTY PATISSERIE
3 Waverley Lane | 01252 265268 For sweet treats in Farnham look no further than the newly opened Pretty Patisserie, found at Squire Kitchen Shop on Waverley Lane (near the train station). Having provided discerning bakers with their sugar craft accessories and expertise over the years, Squires Kitchen now provide shoppers with somewhere to take the strain away. Enjoy a piece of cake and a cuppa whist you watch cake making workshops in action, whilst finding inspiration for your very own bakes back home.
SOMETHING TO SUP ON? THE FOX INN
Frensham Road | 01252 716395 Should you be looking for a little relief and respite from the hysteria of moving home, then let us recommend The Fox Inn found in Lower Bourne on the outskirts of Farnham. This newly refurbished 15th century pub has all the hallmarks of a traditional pub, with a family friendly atmosphere that lends itself to long afternoons indulging in food and drink. Whether it’s dinner with friend’s midweek or a sumptuous Sunday roast with the family, visit The Fox Inn for good times in Farnham.
The ancient ruins of Waverley Abbey lie just a mile away from Farnham town centre and was the very first monastery founded in Britain by the reforming Cistercian religious order. A small group of monks from France settled in this quiet spot by the River Wey in 1128, and Waverley soon became the springboard for Cistercian settlement in southern England.

What to choose firsttTHE HOUSE OR THE SCHOOL? When moving to the countryside there are normally two driving factors – wanting your children to grow up out of a city with more space, and schooling. Surrey ticks many boxes for families, as the commute isn’t too arduous, the countryside is beautiful and the county is peppered with pleasant market towns and idyllic villages. The cherry on the top is that the schools are also fantastic. So, which takes priority – your child’s school or your family home? We’ve helped so many families with this quandary. In our experience, the age of your child and the time of year are the two most important factors in this decision. If your child is nursery and pre-school age (0-5). If you have pre-school aged children you may not have their education on your radar. Knowing the catchment areas for schools is a wise decision, as you don’t want to move only to find that you haven’t a hope of getting into the ‘outstanding’ primary school in the area. If your child is Junior/ Prep School age (5-11/13). State Schools: For 4+ and 7+ (i.e. starting in Reception and Year 3) applications need to be submitted to the local Council Office from November 2017 to January 2018 for entry in September 2018. You need to have exchanged contracts on your new home/ committed to your rental property in order to use it as your application address. If you were moving outside these dates, you would also have to apply through the council
approximately 4 weeks before you need the place. Your exchange document would need to state the completion date before the application is processed. A key consideration at this stage is feeder schools. Most secondary schools’ key criteria are distance from home and sibling policy. However, if you are on the ‘edge’ of the catchment, whether your child is attending a feeder junior school is a determining factor. Independent Schools. As schools are not linked to your address, you could argue that the house could be chosen before the school. However, years of long school runs can be miserable. We would decide on the school first. Most parents are happy to drive up to 20 minutes to and from school, so that can give you a sizeable search area to concentrate the house hunt in. Senior school (11+). State Schools: If your house move is tied to getting your child into a particular school, then focus your search area on the catchment for that particular school. If you are lucky enough to have a few good options, you’ll have the flexibility to focus on the house hunt first. As with primary schools, moving at a time that isn’t a normal entry point doesn’t mean that they won’t get in. Pupils change schools for a variety of reasons, so places may well come up. Independent Schools. With approximately five to seven years of senior school to take into consideration and the option to weekly board at some schools, the decision of whether to go for house or school first depends very much on whether this is a ‘forever’ home or ‘stepping stone house’. If a forever home, why limit yourself to proximity to a school your child will
attend for a while, particularly if your child can weekly board? If it’s a ‘stepping stone house’ you may choose the school first, knowing that for the next couple of years most of your life will be based in easy reach and you can get more involved. What to do next? A lot of schools, both state and independent, are having their open days in the next three months. Get online, find out when they are and start looking. If you miss the open days, all schools will be happy to offer individual tours. Schools are as personal as houses – only you will know where is right for your child. Once a decision is made on schools it can make the house hunt easier as it is one less factor to try and accommodate, and choosing the wrong school for your child can have a far greater impact than choosing the wrong house.
