THE ACADEMY OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC STUDIOS, SCHOLARSHIPS, AND SUSTAINABLE CAREERS THE ACADEMY OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC ANNOUNCE FURTHER GROWTH FOR 2018 The Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) has been building sustainable careers in the music industry at their Guildford campus since 1995. Offering degree and diploma qualifications, alongside Saturday School courses in Guildford, students can learn how to develop their skills as producers, musicians, songwriters, technicians and entrepreneurs in the music industry at any ACM campus. With the successful launch of ACM London last year, 2017 has seen a lot of exciting developments for the Academy - with plenty planned for 2018 too. This summer ACM announced that it would be bringing its unique brand of music industry education to Birmingham’s thriving Jewellery Quarter. ACM Birmingham is launching this September and looks forward to welcoming even more new students in 2018. After successfully signing the lease to Guildford’s iconic arts venue, the Electric Theatre, ACM has revealed even more facilities upgrades for its talented student body. With a flagship studio under construction in the Grade II listed Rodboro Building, students at ACM Guildford will have more access than ever before to state-of-the-art recording facilities. Designed in collaboration with Metropolis Studios, Europe’s largest recording facility, the new studio will house a large live room suitable for orchestral set ups and bands, a stone-room offering an alternative resonance and sound, alongside a control room complete with an SSL Duality console. Built with communication in mind, a direct line-of-sight has been incorporated into the build, making collaboration between the producer and artist seamless. To accompany this brand new space, ACM will be installing outboard gear from Universal Audio, JDK and Lexicon alongside Dynaudio speakers for monitoring. The same industry-standard software used in all ACM studios will be available in the new space, which includes the latest versions of Pro Tools, Logic and Ableton alongside plugins from Native Instruments, Melodyne, Fab Filter and many
others. The new studio is set to be used by ACM’s tutors for lectures, workshops and masterclasses, such as their annual Audio Production Event, and for student bookings. Known for their world-class tutors and stateof-the-art facilities, learning-by-doing is at the heart of the Academy’s ethos. Studios like this new flagship facility, coupled with the real-world experience offered by their exclusive Industry Link department, mean that ACM students receive an unparalleled learning experience, making ACM graduates highly regarded by music industry professionals. With ACM’s Industry Link department, students can expect opportunities for internships, work experience and gigs. Alongside this experience (on offer at all campuses), students can benefit from one-to-one tutorials and artist development sessions with both Ace, Head of Creative Industry Development (and the guitarist in Skunk Anansie) and Kieron Pepper, Head of Creative Output (former live drummer for the Prodigy). Constantly evolving and striving to deliver the best in music industry education, ACM is committed to making its education more accessible than ever before. So far in 2017 two new Scholarships have been made available to the most dedicated and passionate of students, the Skunk Anansie Scholarship and the Music Gateway Production Scholarship. These new Scholarships are offered on an annual basis alongside the Academy’s BASCA, Freddie Mercury and Keith Lowde Scholarships meaning that five students will graduate from ACM every year free from tuition-fee debt. Collectively worth up to £130,000, ACM looks for hard work, drive and potential when awarding these prestigious scholarships. With so many successes in 2017 so far, ACM is looking forward to building on this in 2018, with even more exciting developments in the pipeline.
If you think you’ve got what it takes to join ACM as part of the next generation of the music industry, sign up for an Open Day now www.acm.ac.uk/open-days or call their Admissions team to find out more on 01483 500 841

MERRIST WOOD COLLEGE OUTSTANDING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS AT MERRIST WOOD COLLEGE It’s been another exciting year at Merrist Wood College, with a number of high profile student successes and more medals and trophies to add to the College’s growing collection. Floristry students worked tirelessly to create their vibrant floral exhibit for this year’s ‘Future Florists’ category at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2017. They were tasked with decorating a motorised tuk tuk to recreate a ‘vibrant city street scheme’ which ‘reflects a bustling street full of flowers’. The design process allowed the students to explore and experiment with a range of different techniques, plants and flowers, culminating in a spectacular final piece which incorporated lively colours, cascading flowers and vibrant garlands. Their exhibit, on show from 23-27 May, received a bronze medal which is a fantastic achievement for all involved. Floristry Lecturer, Lesley Prendergast, said: “Our students have worked extremely hard over the last two months and it has paid off. Their final piece is superb and they should be very proud of themselves.” Previous Merrist Wood College student, Charlotte Harris, also won a gold award at the show with her debut Show Garden design, sponsored by the Royal Bank of Canada to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and the 10th anniversary of the Bank’s Blue Water Project. Charlotte spent two weeks in Canada to research the Bank’s North American homeland, with its spectacular forests and freshwater lakes, to get inspiration for her final design which incorporated delicate woodland plant life, with angular granite paving and impressive copper structures. Working with Charlotte to create the garden was local landscaping firm, Landscape Associates, who took along two Merrist Wood College apprentices to help them complete the task. Jake Foulger and Callum Gilfillan are both completing their Intermediate Apprenticeship in Horticulture (Landscape Construction) with Merrist Wood College. In May, Arboriculture students hosted and won the Arboricultural Association Arborist Tree Challenge (3ATC) Southern College Climbing Competition, sponsored by arborist suppliers, Gustharts. The event welcomed first and second year students

from colleges across the south of England, with each team consisting of three climbers and one reserve. Each of the students faced the challenge of a tree with four different stations, beginning at the top of the tree at the sound of the starting horn, working their way down the tree and completing an action at each station. Each student’s climb was timed, then judges issued time penalties and bonuses based on their performance, giving them their final time. The College’s second year students were the first to climb and achieved the fastest collective time of the day, winning first place for the College. Arboriculture Tutor, Tom Peacock, said: “I’m really proud of both teams. Our second year students thoroughly deserved to win and our first year students should feel proud to have completed each task, having never done anything like this before. It is yet another great achievement for the College’s Arboriculture Department.” The ultimate outdoor classroom, Merrist Wood College offers the opportunities to study Apprenticeships, Animal Management, Wildlife and Conservation, Sport, Horticulture, Landscaping, Arboriculture, Equine, Floristry and Public Services. It has a national and international reputation for high quality training amongst employers and industry experts and a long history of providing unrivalled education in land-based subjects.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING: THE VALID ALTERNATIVE TO A LEVELS Young people are facing an increasingly competitive job market, with high volumes of quality jobseekers pursuing each post and recruiters becoming more demanding. Yet Britain is still battling the stigma that university is the best route in to employment and many young people are being pushed to pursue academia. Meanwhile, the British economy is suffering from a skills mismatch, and subsequent skills gaps in important growth industries. Previously seen as the underdog, vocational qualifications are fast becoming essential for today’s jobseeker. In contrast to more traditional academic subjects, which focus on theoretical concepts, vocational courses are designed
to teach practical, real life skills required by employers in the job market. Guildford College is recognising this shift in the type of qualifications sought by employers and is providing high-quality technical and professional education and training for young people, adults and employers. In contrast to more traditional Sixth Forms, Guildford College prepares its students with valuable skills for the workplace, helping to develop their career opportunities and strengthen the local, regional and national economy. Guildford College is an inspirational place to learn because training is delivered by expert teaching staff in industry-standard facilities. The ma jority of its teachers are sourced from their relevant industry, which means they have extensive experience, knowledge and skills in the workplace. Guildford College’s facilities include state-of-theart kitchens, restaurant, TV studio, workshops and salons, many of which are open to the public, allowing students to experience working alongside paying customers.

From over 200 entries, six finalists from colleges all over the country went head to head in a live final where they showcased their artistic creations in front of the judging panel. Anna’s peacockinspired look won her a jane iredale make-up kit worth £1000 as well as £1000 worth of jane iredale mineral cosmetic products for training purposes within the Media Make-Up courses at Guildford. As part of her prize, Anna also received a week’s work placement with a professional make-up artist and one week professional training at the Jane Iredale head office in London.
Finally, a group of very talented student chefs from Guildford College recently came away with an impressive collection of awards from the recent Wessex Salon Culinaire Competition held at Brockenhurst College in the New Forest. FARNBOROUGH COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY STUDENT VOICE! We caught up with three former Farnborough College of Technology students to find out what they’re doing now: George, now a Team Leader at Southco Manufacturing “While at college I improved my technical knowledge which I can now apply to my current role, where I really enjoy managing my team. I’d say that learning about new products and technology, as well as viewing and advising my organisation on potential new opportunities, is the most interesting part of my job.” William, now a Commis Chef at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons “My time at college helped me prepare for my career by giving me the training I needed to get into my chosen profession. For my work placement, I went to The Four Seasons Hotel in Dogmersfield for four weeks, after which I was
offered a part-time position with them. This gave me experience in a top class establishment to enable me to then progress to a Michelin Star restaurant.” “My Executive Head Chef recommended I enter this year’s Craft Guild of Chefs Graduate Awards competition for under 23 year olds, which is a National competition. I am now a Finalist (one of twelve) with the final being held this August in Birmingham.” Aimée, now studying BA (Hons) at the University of Sussex “College definitely helped my independence, allowed me to research, and complete assignments within my own time. Referencing within essays prepared me for the work I had to complete at university for essays and assignments. College is similar to university in that tutors can still guide you but allow you to explore your own potential within your work.”
