RECYCLing WEEK: 25th september -1st october
By Alex D’Arcy
WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND Recycling Week takes place across the nation this September; aiming to revitalise and inspire our ways of thinking when it comes to what we waste and how we waste it. In this age of over consumption and the oversized cardboard box the size of the house used to home your single USB stick delivery, it’s as important as ever to take the time to think about what we’re throwing away and if that item could actually be used to produce or be used for something else more effective… Is that an old sock you have in your possession or is that in-fact an old sock that you can turn into a hanging planter? Recycle, upcycle, re-use… let’s just do it and stop wasting the world away. No one wants to be a waste-man, do they fam?
Here’s how, as a county, and as responsible human beings, we can help!
IN THE HOME This should be the place where you recycle from the most. Make it easier to recycle by having a small waste bin in each room. Idea? Why not collect empty water bottles and make a plastic bottle greenhouse in the garden? Then use your food waste as compost to help grow your own food? A simple cycle that makes so much sense - what goes around comes around, so they say.
IN THE KITCHEN Food waste has been hot on the lips for some time now. Food has never seemed so expensive, yet as a county we are throwing it away by the tonne – 80,000 tonnes more specifically in Surrey alone! So not only are we wasting money on food we don’t eat, we’re not even disposing of it in a responsible way. Food waste that is sent to landfill doesn’t harmlessly breakdown. It has a big impact on the environment as it rots and releases methane – a harmful greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Food waste bins are provided throughout Surrey via local councils and to recycle your food waste is now easier, cheaper and cleaner because you can line your caddy with plastic bags. You can use anything from pedal bin liners and old shopping bags, to bread and salad bags. If everyone in Surrey put all their food waste in their caddy for collection it would save taxpayers more than £3 million a year. For more information about using your food waste caddy, and how to reduce the amount of food you throw away visit recycleforsurrey.org.uk
GIVE IT AWAY Charity shops are possibly our favourite way to ‘recycle’ unwanted threads, books, games, CD’s and DVD’s. Let someone else enjoy what you don’t anymore whilst donating much needed
funds to the charity in question. Charity shops are always on the look-out for new stock and some need more than others. Share the love by dropping off at different charity shops whilst knowing that you’ve contributed to a worthy cause.
THE UPCYCLE Upcycling refers to the re-purposing and re-using of items that are destined for the bin. Whether it’s a table that you picked up from a charity shop that needs a new lease of life or whether it’s that over-worn leather jacket that could be made into a bag – have a go at creating and see what you can come up with.
SUPPORT THE SURREY RE-USE NETWORK! The Surrey Reuse Network is a charity and social enterprise that represents and supports community based furniture and appliance reuse & recycling organisations in Surrey. They provide collection and delivery services to householders for bulky pre-used furniture and other household goods, as well as providing affordable quality furniture and other goods to local communities through a network of showrooms and stores.
To find out more and to find your local store visit surreyreusenetwork.org.uk For more information about recycling in Surrey visit recycleforsurrey.org.uk

A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE STORE FOR THE ECO CONSCIOUS SHOPPER London Fashion Week, takes place this month with aficionados of fashion taking note of what’s on trend for the coming season. As models strut their stuff on the runaway, creators and consumers alike are readying themselves for their next foray into fashion buying. It’s never been easier to consume trends. Whilst visual platforms like Instagram and Facebook fast become the norm; forever updating and inspiring us with that ‘next look’, there seems an apparent ease for fashion brands and houses to affordably appease the growing want of their customer base via fast fashion. It comes as no surprise to learn that the fashion industry is now the second most polluting industry in the world after oil. The cost passed on from the consumer being able to get cheap, often poorly made clothes, is in fact being passed over to beloved mother earth. Not cool. One Surrey based company striving to save the name of fashion from the brink of ecological collapse are the sustainably
inspired ED London. Providing an online oasis of eco-conscious goodness for the eco-conscious minded shopper, co-founders of ED London, Erin Donohoe and Heather Cobbing, are on a mission to change the way we think and shop for our goods. Lifelong friends, Erin and Heather had worked in the fashion industry for 14 years before deciding to turn their passion for ethically produced products into a reality with the inception of ED London. Erin herself, designs and produces the most beautiful boho chic scarves that are then put together by local makers here in Surrey. Additionally, whether it be fashion, homeware, skin care, jewellery or accessories, ED London stock an array of products sourced from like-minded companies and individuals from around the globe. From excellent re-usable coffee cups to beard grooming oils, from soothing face cleansing balms to hand made and embroidered clutch bags; discover a treasure trove of truly awesome, sustainably sourced, fairly made products packed with heart and soul.

TALKING TO: JOLYON THOMAS At only 30 years old, Jolyon Thomas from Farnham has produced, mixed, engineered, co-written and played with such celebrated bands as Slaves, M83, Maps, British Sea Power, Bay Rays, and even Irish titans U2. But it’s the strident, pounding rock duo Royal Blood and their recently released No.1 album ‘How Did We Get So Dark?’ that has placed Thomas firmly at the top of the UK’s most sought-after studio talents… How did you start off in the music industry? I began playing in bands with my mates and writing songs. I am originally a drummer and then progressed to playing most instruments... pretty badly. I guess I started off in the industry when I started recording and producing my own band and my friends’ bands, and labels start approaching me and asking for my input. And suddenly I started getting paid which is amazing. My first proper job was Maps, ‘We Can Create’. I did some beats, programming and some engineering on that record. It was nominated for a Mercury.
You’ve lived in Farnham for most of your life. What are your thoughts on the music and creative scene in that town and Surrey in general? I went to loads of gigs in the area when I was growing up. West End Centre in Aldershot was a big one and a few years later the Boileroom opened in Guildford. Both Barney and Dom have had a huge impact in supporting live music so I guess it’s these sort of venues and people who have really kept the scene alive in Surrey. It seems we need live music more than ever right now.
You’re one third of Farnham creative collective Youth Hymns. Tell us more about them? Jake, Johnny and myself formed Youth Hymns. (I actually met both of them as I recorded their respective bands at the time). Many musicians do lots of creative things beyond making music. For us we always had a visual approach to the music we were making so we’re naturally drawn into video and film. Jake and Johnny are putting a lot of energy into pursuing our vision for Youth Hymns and are making fantastic videos that really do come from a musical perspective.
Producing Royals Blood’s ‘How Did We Get So Dark?’ has to be a high point in a career full of them. What was it about their sound that drew you first, and where did you want to take it on this record? I am very proud of that record of course and I had a great time making it. I was drawn to Royal Blood because of the space. Being a two piece there is very little room for error, and not having too many overdubs is a really great sound if you can nail it. Much of that process was making the arrangements exciting and fun as well as really working on the sonics of the bass and drums to make it a contemporary ‘rock’ record. Mike can do so much with that bass it’s really insane. We tried a lot of effects pedals!
Any artists, established or up and coming, that you’d love to work with?
Check out the new album from Royal Blood produced by Jolyon Thomas on Warner Bros. Records and follow Jolyon at www.jolyonthomas.com
I’m always on the lookout for something new; there are a few projects I’m excited about working on in the coming months. There’s a new artist called Nilufer Yahya who is a super talented guitarist and singer. I’ve done her previous two singles (Small Crimes and The Florist) so I hope to make some more songs with her.

BOOK FESTIVAL 2017
One of the cultural highlights of the year, the Guildford Book Festival is back with another stunning line-up of writers appearing over seven days… Now celebrating its 28th year, the Guildford Book Festival never fails to draw the UK’s best authors, journalists, illustrators, comedians, thinkers and opinion makers and 2017 looks like it might be the best yet. Fiction, non-fiction, sport, history, politics and entertainment; you name the genre and there’ll be a best-selling writer appearing at the festival. Topping the bill are the inimitable food writer and broadcaster Nigella Lawson, Booker prize-winning author Alan Hollinghurst with his long-awaited sixth novel, The Sparsholt Affair; popular presenter Jeremy Vine to share anecdotes from his hilarious memoir; award-winning BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson and legendary mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington. Academy Award-winning Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee, will give a rare insight into his work on The Lord of the Rings books and films, as well as the posthumously published Tolkien novel, Beren and Lúthien.
This year’s Literary Lunch brings together former MEP and father of Boris, Stanley Johnson, with dance critic and author, Judith Mackrell. Johnson’s latest novel, KOMPЯOMAT, follows the fortunes of a plethora of politicians including a British Prime Minister fighting a referendum he thought he couldn’t lose, and a brash showman running for US President. Sound familiar? Judith Mackrell’s book, The Unfinished Palazzo, is full of gossip and scandal from 20th century Venice, as she tells the story of three passionate and wonderfully unconventional women and the palazzo they each, in turn, called home. The festival will once again explore some of the greatest stories from history. Popular historian Dan Jones will speak about the mysterious Knights Templar; BBC broadcaster, Anita Anand will relate the truth behind the Koh-lNoor – the world’s most infamous jewel, Mary Craig reveals the extraordinary life of courtesan-cum-WW1 spy Mata Hari; Catherine Hewitt tells the remarkable tale of Suzanne Valadon, the Impressionists’ most beautiful model, and a talented artist in her own right and journalist Charlie English reveals the extraordinary flight to save ancient manuscripts from al-Qaeda in The Book Smugglers of Timbuktu. Crime writing is always hugely popular at Guildford Book Festival and this year the Festival welcomes the return of
international bestselling crime writer, Peter James, as well as Silent Witness writer M J Arlidge, rising star Tim Weaver, and BBC journalist-turned-crime writer, Terry Stiastny. Lovers of sport won’t want to miss Judy Murray, mother to tennis champions Andy and Jamie, who will reflect upon her family’s journey from the soggy courts of Dunblane to Centre Court at Wimbledon and football fans will enjoy acclaimed sports writers Patrick Barclay and Ian Herbert in conversation to discuss what makes a good football manager. For aspiring and developing writers, author and leading writing instructor Rachel Marsh will run creative writing workshops throughout the week and younger readers will have the chance to meet Rowan Oakwing creator E J Clarke, illustrator Alison Jay and Mango and Bambang author and illustrator Polly Faber and Clara Vullumy. New for 2017 is an event for secondary schools at the University of Surrey featuring Irena Brignull, Melinda Salisbury, Frances Hardinge and hosted by author and publisher Rachel Hickman. Funds raised through ticket sales and sponsorship enable the Festival to take authors into the Borough’s schools. This year students will be entertained by award-winning illustrator and author Emma Dodd, M G Leonard, Katherine Webber and Rob Lloyd-Jones.

He has reported from 140 countries and interviewed around 200 world leaders, including Mikhail Gorbachev and Vladimir Putin; Margaret Thatcher and every other British Prime Minister since Harold Wilson. He has covered 46 wars on four continents.
Broadcaster Jeremy Vine reveals the lessons he has learnt from life, his Radio 2 listeners, hosting Eggheads and his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. In a hilarious memoir punctuated by vivid anecdotes and laugh-out-loud moments, Vine explains what it’s like to hit a button and hear - totally unvarnished and unspun - the voices of so-called ordinary people. And, why they are not so ordinary after all. Britain’s premier mountaineer has undertaken 19 Himalayan expeditions including four to Everest, and has made many first ascents. In his insightful autobiography he looks back at his many triumphs in the climbing world and discusses what it takes to conquer fear and survive in some of the most inhospitable places in the world.

Will Knowlton and son channel their inner Karate Kids and discover the fun and learning that can be found at Mavericks Martial Arts Academy…
MINI MAVERICKS It’s an all too familiar dilemma for us parents: We live in a weird and wonderful digital world where information and fun are just a single click away. With a wave of a hand we can let our kids have “quiet time” with their iPads, PCs or whatever. It’s beneficial, we tell ourselves, they’re learning, safe inside and we can get on with whatever it is we need to be doing. However, childhood obesity is on the rise while children’s physical abilities and confidence is on a downturn. So what if there was something that could give our kids those developments that are so important but aren’t gained from algebra, geography and the endless analysis of a Jane Austin novel? Martial Arts have been popular in the West for years. I too took to karate chopping inanimate pieces of my mother’s furniture once I’d seen Karate Kid in the 80s. But what I missed, and I hazard to guess what a lot of parents miss, is that Martial Arts isn’t about knocking seven bells out of each other. It’s actually about discipline, confidence (not arrogance, that’s important) and strength of character. Mini Mavericks champions this ideal. The classes look to teach kids the basics in martial arts, focusing on good form and fun as well as discipline. The trouble is, I’m 36. There’s no way I can pass for a young kid so I needed to find a stooge to head
in for me, scope it out, and see what the classes were like. So I grabbed an 8-yearold off the street… no, no, of course I didn’t: I asked my son if he’d liked to try it out. After all, he’d completed Zelda and needed a new challenge. He was keen so we headed out to Mavericks on Ward Street, Guildford for him to find out more. Mavericks Martial Arts Academy was founded by Alex Kennedy. Alex is the Chief Instructor and has over 15 years’ experience and training under his thirddegree black belt. But the man who has represented England but Great Britain and won many titles is not some goliath but a gentle, nice guy who sits chatting to me amiably as my son removes his shoes and heads out onto the mat with his instructor Daniel. “I started out doing weights to keep fit, but you know…after a while… it just wasn’t doing it for me. There were some guys doing kickboxing at the gym I went to so I thought I’d try it out.” He smirks, looking lost in a pleasant memory “I was absolutely hooked, straight away” I can tell he loves what he does and his enthusiasm is clearly infectious. Everyone at the gym is smiling, happy and welcoming. It puts me at ease because I know it puts my son at ease. “Yes it has to be fun,” says Alex as we watch Daniel take the kids through a warm up, “but discipline, or self-discipline, is really key. We say to the kids that tidying your room when your mum or dad ask is discipline. After a few weeks we ask what self-discipline is. They all say, ‘tidying
before we’re asked.’ it’s a great feeling to get a reaction like that” Well, he’s getting a great reaction out of my bundle of trouble. He’s even got my son doing burpees. Jeez, I can’t do burpees and I’m a fairly fit, outdoorsy type guy (wind swept and interesting too, I like to think.) The walls of the gym speak volumes to Alex and his teams influence on kids. There are loads of trophies and pictures of smiling children staring out of them. Every 3 months the children are given the opportunity to grade to a higher belt. The higher belts are given extra responsibilities in the classes like assisting with the warm up and stretch which gives them a sense of achievement for their hard work. We look on as Daniel takes them through kicks and strikes. My boy is all smiles as the lesson starts to wrap up and the kids sit on the floor and chat to Daniel. I discover that the end of the class involves a chance for the kids to chat about topics like fitness, good nutrition, and even road safety. It’s nice to see that it is indeed a discussion, ideas are being bounced around and there is the familiar hum of discussion and laughter drifting over from the mat. Finally, the class bows and my boy bounces over. “Dad, can I come back and do his again? Please, it was really cool!” And as a parent I’m sure you’ll agree, an approval like that from your offspring seals the deal.
The Mini Mavericks program runs 4 times a week: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday 4.15-5pm, Saturdays 10.15-11am. Children aged 4-7 years. £40 a month after an initial joining fee of £50 (which covers their license, insurance and uniform.) 1 Ward Street, Guildford, Surrey, GU1 4LH | 01483 568455 | mavericksacademies@outlook.com | www.mavericksacademies.com

THE GUIDE 2 GLEANING
By Alex D’Arcy The Guide to Gleaning? What’s that all about then? No, it’s not just some new dance move, latest internet craze or an early buzzword for 2018, gleaning is in fact the ancient practice of collecting surplus stock from farmers’ fields and distributing it to those most in need. Gleaning is even mentioned in the bible, found within the book of Leviticus where it suggests that farmers leave loose crops for the poor and widowed to eat. Decent. Sounds pretty humane right? Pretty logical. So why are we talking about it? We’ve all been there; a perfectly good meal that you were looking forward to, tainted by the fact that you bought it two weeks previously and it was sat at the back of the fridge out of view and now out of date. In addition to our guilt laden personal culpability on the issue of food waste, we are of course not alone. The considerable amount of food that is laid to waste by our supermarkets and food outlets due to the variety of health and safety regulations imposed by our regulatory boards and bodies is a story well documented throughout the media. A funny shaped carrot or a discoloured squash will be deemed unacceptable for sale by leading supermarkets and essentially wasted. When there is a surplus of food stuffs quite clearly being over-produced due to supermarkets’ requirements for aesthetically pleasing fruit and veg, coupled together with the quite clear necessity around the world to feed those in need, we wonder why this
illogical madness to prioritise the safety of global conglomerates before the nourishment and survival of human beings is simply deemed the norm? There are of course individuals and organisations looking to change the status quo of unsellable produce through campaigning and awareness. Feedback Global are an environmental organisation who campaign to end food waste at every level of our food system. Since 2009 they have engaged governments, international institutions, businesses, NGO’s, grassroots organisations and the public to eliminate food waste and to make a change for the future. Feedback is built on over a decade of food waste campaigning by Tristram Stuart and the Feedback team. Feedback run a variety of campaigns that focus on the different aspects of the food system and the reduction of food waste that are essentially inspired by Gleaning.
FEEDING THE 5000 The flagship campaign from the folks over at Feedback Global is Feeding the 5000. At each event Feedback serve up a delicious communal feast for 5000 people made entirely out of food that would otherwise have been wasted. In addition to the larger events, the community are invited to curate their own feeding events with feedback’s Disco Chop campaign. The premise remains; make tasty food from food stuffs otherwise wasted, play some tunes (because food and music is fun) and spread the message on food waste and what we can do to reduce it locally and globally. Simply download the disco chop tool kit online and start planning your own events today.
FOOD & DRINK
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
KNOW YOUR FACTS • An estimated 20 to 40% of UK fruit and veg is rejected even before they reach the shops – mostly because they do not match the supermarkets’ excessively strict cosmetic standards. • A third of the world’s entire food supply could be saved by reducing waste…enough to feed 3 billion people. • 10% of rich countries’ greenhouse gas emissions come from growing food that is never eaten.
GLEANING NETWORK The Gleaning Network coordinates volunteers, farmers and food re-distribution charities to salvage the thousands of tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables that are wasted on farms every year across the UK and Europe, and direct this fresh, nutritious food to people in need. If you want to help you can! All you need to do is sign up online to volunteer and to find out about gleaning days taking place near you. Aged 18 – 24? In January 2016 the gleaning network partnered with Food Cycle for the From Farm to Fork scheme, which aims to train and empower young people to tackle food waste. Get involved and become an ambassador at feedbackglobal.org
FARMER? HOW TO GET INVOLVED? If you are an individual or group looking to become gleaners, then register your interest online and you’ll be made aware of gleaning days as and when they crop up. Even though one of the first Feedback Global Gleaning Day’s was actually held in Surrey, at this present moment the county of Surrey does not have its own Gleaning Network and therefore we would ask you to lend a hand and volunteer for the London and Sussex groups, who will show you the ropes and get you gleaning. Sign up at feedbackglobal.org
For more information visit feedbackglobal.org
The folks behind The Gleaning Network, Feed Back Global, are always looking to reduce food waste from farms. If you are a farmer and have surplus stock this harvest then why don’t you get in touch with the team? Perhaps you’re part of an allotment scheme and you would like your surplus stock to go to those less fortunate than yourself? If this sounds like you and you would like to get involved, please get in touch with Martin at martin@feedbackglobal.org

WHERE TO EAT: THE HORSE GUARDS INN, PETWORTH Despite the unapologetic bias in our name, we at The Guide 2 Surrey recognise that our beloved county is hardly an island. So when rumours reached us of a country inn a stone’s throw from our border doing all sorts of wonderful things with food and drink in a building loaded with character, run by a tight family unit with a fiercely independent vision, we knew we had to scout the barbarian wastes of West Sussex to discover it for ourselves. We certainly wouldn’t be the first, of course. In the ten years since Sam Beard and partner Mischa took over the 300-year-old Horse Guards Inn in the tiny hamlet of Tillington outside Petworth, word of mouth has sent customers streaming here in an unceasing tide, be they locals, day trippers from the city and neighbouring counties like ours and even tourists from Belgium and Germany, all drawn by Head Chef Mark Robinson’s honest yet inventive food and the building’s heartfelt love letter to a bygone rural England. Sam Beard’s evident pride in their establishment is well-earned. A “lifelong
slave to hospitality,” Sam left London pubs behind to find one of his own in the Sussex countryside. “We came to see this place on a sunny September day ten years ago and immediately fell in love with it. It’s not the most inspirational pub from the outside, but as you come in it’s very different. We saw loads of potential. It’s been an organic process; it took about five years to get it to where we wanted it to be, but now it’s our baby. We love what we do, and I think we do what we do very well.” There is a ridiculously lovely cottage garden hidden out the back whose halfwild, half-manicured spirit manifests even more acutely inside the pub itself. There isn’t a corner of this inn that doesn’t offer something curious and charming to gaze upon, be it antique prints of rural life; someone’s fastidious collection of glass carafes, urns and soda spritzers; twin facing upright pianos; doily bunting; antlers; random stirrups; copper lanterns and dried flowers – if there’s rhyme or reason to the Horse Guard’s décor it’s hard to follow, but it all lends the place a vintage tea-room nostalgia that should be irresistible to anyone with a beating heart.
In many ways, the Horse Guards Inn goes further than mere nostalgia, and recaptures the traditional role of the village pub by offering food supplies and provisions, much of it homemade. There’s also a fervent commitment to provenance on behalf of the kitchen who source almost all their ingredients from Sussex’s rich larder, whether from local suppliers, dug out of their own vegetable patch or foraged from the wild hedgerows nearby. This makes them one of the most agile kitchens we’ve yet come across, changing up their menus as often as twice in the same day depending on what lush produce lands in front of the chef. Pork from nearby Calcot Farm landed in front of us first, teased into a luscious, creamy rillette, accompanied by colourful pickled veg and some robust grilled rye sourdough for a dark, earthy crunch. Now, I like tomatoes as much as the next person, especially midsummer, but when you promise new season garlic, confited until its allium bite becomes soft and mellow, and the cloves burst, buttery and unctuous from the half-bulb to spread over fat, juicy hunks of bright orange
FOOD & DRINK
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
Brandywine tomato, flecks of basil and sourdough, well; I was instantly sold. That little plate of sunshine was gone within a minute. Then came an achingly attractive plate of pigeon breasts next; flawlessly cooked little sheaves of tender rosy meat draped over a tumble of sweet golden raisins and plump haricot beans given some dusky Moroccan spice from cumin and paprika. Subtle splashes of jus pooled around dabs of cool yoghurt, but a genius stroke came from the addition of preserved lemon; tiny candy crumbs and a lick of fragrant oil cutting through game, vegetables and beans with a perfectly judged citrus sharpness. No less deft was a dish that paired flavours of the forest and the ocean thanks to sea trout, it’s crisp skin barely clinging on to meltingly tender, flaky fillet, and locally picked mushrooms. Perched over nuggets of ratte potato, and dripping in parsley and garlic butter, it showed just what this kitchen can do with a few simple, quality ingredients and faultless execution.
A Greek filo tart, the crisp cinnamonlaced pastry blooming like a rose with fat strawberries and raspberries in the centre, drizzled with Sussex honey, might have crashed Instagram (if I wasn’t so inept at the platform) and was a beautiful tribute to the waning summer. Despite visiting in August, I was already hungry for autumn and heartier, homey fare. So a banana and pecan sponge proved the perfect tease, and the first of a great many sticky toffee sauces to come, if other years are anything to go by. It might, however, have been the most conventional pub dish on the Horse Guard’s unconventional menu, which matters not a bit when everything they turn out is of such a high standard as this and every other dish we fell on during our meal. The Horse Guards Inn really does tick every box: there’s a timeless slice of country life, a sincere passion for local produce and sustainability, a warm family ambience, visual appeal in spades and simply outstanding food. If ever there was an excuse to venture out of Surrey, this has to be it.

ON THE GO: AMOR AMORA, GUILDFORD
By Rich Lee Opened two years ago by George and Katya Prassinos in the space formerly occupied by Jo Clarks, Amor Amora quickly evolved into a something-foreveryone café bar that bears the unique stamp of its owners. It isn’t the only independent coffee shop and bar in Guildford, but it might be the town’s most distinctive. Styled throughout by Greek designer Marianna Prassinou, it’s minimalist yet quirky too; a tasteful taverna crossed with a whimsical museum for cuddly woodland creatures. There’s nowhere else quite like it in G-town. Perched at the intersection of the High Street and North Street, this self-styled epicurean café makes for an ideal oasis for Guildford’s workers and residents to escape the bustle, enjoy a glass of wine, some truly excellent coffee (their tea list runs to nearly a dozen varieties too), some indulgent, homemade cake and just zone out for a while in the cool calm of Amor Amora’s tranquil interior, or upstairs on their hidden terrace. Their winning breakfasts tilt international, with the dainty ‘Paris’ (two home baked butter croissants, jam or marmalade, fresh butter and seasonal fruits), the lavish ‘New York’ (organic scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and asparagus tips, sprinkled with black caviar) and, um, the ‘Guildford’ (Full English, baby!) In fact, they’ve proven such a hit with locals that
they now serve them all day Sunday, which surely makes them a BFF to the town’s late-night revellers and an enemy to their hangovers. Amor Amora have introduced a luxurious Afternoon Tea which offers a glass of Extra Dry prosecco or a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne, a variety of homemade finger sandwiches on artisan bread, a selection of freshly baked scones, plain and with sultanas, served with strawberry preserve and Devonshire clotted cream, and a variety of delectable continental pastries. But it’s when evening comes around that Amor Amora gets really interesting. This humble café bar happens to serve some of the best cocktails in town, with something to slake any thirst, whether you fancy a classic cosmopolitan, a refreshing Pimm’s or an exotic Caipirinha. Gin connoisseurs are spoiled with over seven varieties and there’s a finely tuned wine list. If you’re not in the mood for something boozy, they serve some excellent juices and soft drinks such as wild elderflower bubbly, Sicilian lemonade, hot ginger beer or Brazilian guarana. Best of all, Amor Amora have recently begun serving amazing Greek meze – or ‘Mezedes’: outrageously moreish pikilia platters spilling with hot and cold, veggie and meat dishes. Displayed on a spinning platter with warm pitta wedges for scooping, these make for some fantastic grazing with traditional Greek
dishes like Taramasalata; ‘Dolmadakia’ vine leaves wrapped into little rolls and stuffed with rice, fresh herbs and lemon; a gorgeous Baba Ganoush style dip called Melitzanosalata and, of course, silky, sumptuous houmous. Hot Mezedes offer up tender fried squid, fat and buttery baked beans in a rich tomato sauce, fragrant meatballs and a traditional Greek Sausage that’s like a lovechild of bratwurst and chorizo and utterly delicious. There’s even a nod to pasta with artfully wrapped parcels stained purple from squid ink and filled with a luscious blend of fresh crab and mascarpone. Everyone’s favourite Cypriot cheese, Halloumi, comes grilled to perfection, with that lovely salty, squeaky bite we’re all so fond of. You could finish all that with ice cream, but you’d be missing a very special treat in the unusual form of a traditional Greek dessert of Carrots; candied strands of gelatinous sweetness with Greek Yoghurt and honey. If it isn’t apparent by now, Amor Amora serves up a wonderfully authentic slice of the Mediterranean in Guildford with great food, a unique décor and easy ambience, so it’s no wonder that local foodies have taken it to heart.

Our small fleet of ‘Old English White’ classic cars provide that added touch to make your day truly memorable. A favourite is the 1951 Bentley MK VI, resplendent with its luxurious cream leather interior, it allows ample room in the back for the largest and longest of dresses! We also have two of the best loved classics, the much admired 1960’s Jaguar MK2 as in the Morse series. Or, of course, nothing quite beats a Rolls Royce, particularly our thirty-year-old Corniche Convertible which - top down - is just ideal for a perfect summer wedding.

TEST DRIVE:
smart forfour electric drive
Rich Lee tests out the latest evolution in zero-emission driving, in the smartest iteration of a vehicle that helped start the electric revolution… “Um, how do I turn it on?” I asked sheepishly, despite a dashboard that had blinked to awake the moment I’d turned the key in the ignition. “You already have,” came the polite reply from the smart Sales Executive at smart of Guildford. I wasn’t expecting the throaty gargle of petrol, or guttural growl of diesel, but surely even electric cars emanate some life under the bonnet? Apparently not. Thus, I’m ignorant when it comes to electric cars, but I doubt I could have chosen a more apt vehicle for my first zero-emission jaunt. smart cars have been pioneering technologies that have made cars and other vehicles ever more efficient and environmentally friendly for years. They even offered one of the first entirely electric motors in a consumer vehicle as far back as 2007. Now, with governments beginning to cap the production of petrol and diesel cars in a little over ten years, the public has become switched on to electric cars like never before. And it’s smart cars, that came out of leftfield years ago to quietly redefine urban driving, that are once again ahead of the pack. The smart perennially popular range, in flavours of fortwo, forfour and cabrio, have this year introduced their fourth generation of electric versions, and it was in their
chunky little four-seater that I ghosted silently away from smart of Guildford and off into the Surrey Hills.
A dinky boot expands into a very sizeable compartment when you put the rear seats forward.
Your first thoughts, naturally, have to wrap themselves around the experience of pelting smoothly along country roads powered by an engine (82 hp/60 kW) so quiet you have to remind yourself that it’s there at all. Although smart make a lot of noise about their cars being the perfect city vehicles thanks to their low-to-zero emissions, easy parking and all-round drivability the forfour electric drive feels especially liberated when on the open road. Silky-smooth on corners and happy cruising along highways (it can reach an impressive 88mph), there isn’t a mile spent in a smart electric drive that isn’t a relaxing joy.
You’re never far from a power point these days to recharge the lithium-ion battery, which boats up to 96 miles for the forfour, and a home unit can see the battery charge to full in about three hours.
A sign of smart’s latest evolution in efficiency can be found in its regenerative braking system to harness kinetic energy; every time you slow down this is energy that helps charge the battery. A power and charge dial to the right lets you know how the battery is working for you and all the other information you require is displayed on a clean and functional dashboard display with a multifunction steering wheel putting most features within quick reach of a fingertip. From the smart media-system to the aircon to the heated seats, every function has a soft-touch tactility that makes the car as much fun to play with inside than it is on the road. Although the larger of the range, I found the forfour super-easy to park and maneuver through busy town centres. Although still compact inside, the forfour is very comfortable and surprisingly versatile too.
Although electric drive vehicles suit a very specific kind of driver and their circumstances, the forfour and her siblings, the two-seater fortwo and semi-convertible cabrio, would provide any motorist with an effortlessly smooth and satisfying driving experience and a versatile family run-around, to say nothing of a lighter conscience when it comes to their carbon footprint.

TEST DRIVE: ŠKODA Kodiaq
It’s surprising that Skoda has taken until 2017 to introduce their own seven-seater car, not to mention their first large SUV, but it’s clear that it has been worth the wait. The Kodiaq range includes 5-seater versions, and engine options range from a 121bhp 1.4 petrol to a serious 188bhp 2.0-litre diesel, with choices of front and four-wheel drive and manual and automatic (DSG) gearboxes. But with their larger Kodiaq, Skoda have produced an SUV that can easily stand proudly alongside other VW Group SUVS like the Tiguan and Seat Ateca, and it even steels some prestige from the perennially popular Land Rover Discovery. Despite its heftier frame, we found the Kodiaq to be remarkably agile even along the twistiest of Surrey’s roads, with minimum sway and confident control. Quiet whether at a cruise or weaving through town, driving the Kodiaq is buttery smooth while always feeling responsive.
Perched in the drivers’ seat, the Kodiaq offers an ideal height to view the road from most angles and an undeniably superior elevation over smaller cars. The dashboard is simple and refined and the burly steering wheel puts a great deal of features at your fingertips. An 8.0-inch touchscreen is super easy to use with access to radio, satnav and smartphone connectivity options. All very standard in SUVs of this class, but Skoda have really pulled out the stops to create a seamless level of interactivity. And, it must be said, with a premium Canton sound system, with the volume up it feels as if you’re driving around in your very own concert hall. Elsewhere, the interior offers a tangibly deluxe feeling thanks to soft leather and faux black marble panelling. There are more pockets, nooks and cabinets than you’ll ever know what to do with and as a seven-seater, it’s versatility as a family vehicle is impressive. With additional 4-wheel drive begs to be employed for off-road adventures. And even if your travelling buddies aren’t so numerous, the boot space afforded by folding the rear seats down verges on cavernous. The Kodiaq’s bag of tricks is far too long to list here, but they’d make any gadget
lover light up. Some are subtle, like the door edge protection where plastic strips eject upon opening to protect the doors in tight parking spots to remote boot opening, or even umbrella slots in the door. Some are cosmetic such as the interior ambient led lighting offering ten colour choices. And some just offer great protection and peace of mind such as pedestrian monitor, active view parking sensors and multi brakes. (some features listed are optional extras.) With the new Kodiaq range, Skoda have introduced a wonderfully realised vehicle into a pretty crowded market. But perhaps its most killer feature is its affordability over a fleet of other SUVs whose quality the Kodiaq easily matches if not surpasses.
ŠKODA Kodiaq Prices start from £22,190 Engine: 1.4 litre or 2.0 litre CO2 Emissions: g/km+ / From 139 Transmission: DSG manual or Auto 2 Wheel Drive or 4x4

Enjoy your garden all year round with AluK bi-fold and sliding doors. Make the most of your outside space with panoramic views through unencumbered glazing during the winter and wide open expanses, straight out into your garden, in summer and spring.
Well thanks to Atlas, the Skyroom is one of the finest contemporary looking conservatory spaces available on the market, designed to emulate the appearance of a real lantern roof set within a solid roof. This illusion is created using a ‘raised ringbeam’ between the top of the internal pelmet and the roof, helping to create a perfect finish to the room’s décor. The key to the Skyroom’s realistic internal look of an orangery is the solid variable depth pelmet. This custom designed internal pelmet instantly changes the appearance of the room, and with spotlights added you can create the perfect evening lighting. The Skyroom will transform your home like no other. Due to its superior thermal performance, the Skyroom can be comfortably used 24 hours a day, in all seasons.
Manufactured from strong but lightweight aluminium, these sliding and folding doors are available in many configurations to suit your home. Whether your property is large or small, you can still achieve the open plan living you desire without worrying about the weather outside. Designed to the highest standards, these doors are reliable, secure and built with performance in mind, ensuring that you enjoy this relaxing and stylish way of living for many years to come. The AluK range of inline or lift and slide premium aluminium doors offers high performance complemented by stunning design, adding a modern and stylish look to your home, opening your living space to the outside.

Conveyancing What exactly does it involve?
By Meirion Shaw, the Home Mover Specialist
Whether you are a first-time buyer or an established home owner, some of the terminology used during your transactions can be confusing and no one seems to want to explain them to the lay person. Well, not any more. One of the most mystifying terms used is ‘Conveyancing’. This is a ‘catch-all’ phrase that is used to refer to the legal process that goes on from your offer being accepted to you buying the house. Generally, this includes such things as: • • • • • •
Providing legal advice Drawing up and assisting contracts Dealing with Land registry Managing all the searches that need to be done Stamp duty changes and payments Collecting and transferring money during the house sale
Solicitors generally can do the work but often they are not specialist. We’d recommend finding a specialist conveyance Solicitor or a licensed conveyance. They will have the necessary qualifications and experience to make the process as smooth and as painless as possible. Don’t feel like you have to use your estate agents preferred conveyancing firm – there is no real benefit to 78
you as they all do the same job; the estate agent probably collects a referral fee. When instructing your conveyancing professional or firm, make sure that they can meet your target exchange and completion dates. Ask them to explain their time plan to you and don’t be afraid of asking questions. A lot of legal jargon can be intimidating but asking questions will help you be better informed. Questions like – do they conduct the pre-sale questionnaires and get them done before they start the searches etc or will they run them alongside each other. Make sure you ask them to explain how quickly they’ll start the searches, how long it takes to get searches done and which searches they recommend. Also ask them how they interact with your mortgage company and if they are able to act for them as well – this will eradicate a number of other fees. It’s also worth asking if a ‘no sale, no fee’ package is offered or a “fixed fee”. If they want to charge a % of the value of the house, you should try to negotiate – it takes the same amount of time to do the searches and legal contracts for a £400,000 as it does for a £1,000,000 property. Ask them to explain why they charge what they do and hopefully it will sound reasonable (remember they are highly qualified and have spent years in training and gaining experience). Whatever your fee structure is, just make sure that all potential costs are highlighted before you instruct them.
It is advisable to not base your choice purely around price – quite often you get what you pay for so going for the cheapest could prove a costly mistake. Make sure you have a dedicated case handler so you don’t have to keep explaining yourself and ask if they have any holidays booked so you understand their time frames as well as you explaining yours. There’s nothing worse than not being able to exchange because a solicitor is on holiday! Communication is key so set the precedent early in the relationship. Also, do not feel like you must use a local firm (although I prefer to do so) – you need someone efficient who stays in touch keeping all costs transparent from the start. Dealing with solicitors, surveyors, estate agents when you’re selling and buying is a bit of a juggling act. If you’re already busy at work, The Homemover Specialist can work on your behalf to manage the Conveyance process, keeping you up-to-date with developments every step of the way.
