WOKING’S PHOENIX CULTURAL CENTRE FINDS A NEW HOME The Phoenix Cultural Centre have announced their intention to take over and rename Quake, a 1,000-capacity nightclub in central Woking, to run as a live music venue and cultural centre. Working in partnership with promoters, agents and national networks, the project aims to bring bands and musicians to Woking from around the country, as well continuing their long record of encouraging and promoting emerging local talent. In addition to live music, the centre will offer a wide range of cultural and literary events, DJ nights and space for community hire. Renamed The Fiery Bird, the building will initially be leased for three years, with the intention that the project becomes part of the new Town Centre development. Elaine McGinty, Director of the Phoenix Cultural Centre CIC said: “The space needs work done on it and we are looking forward to getting in there and making it work. It’ll be an exciting new space for Woking that directly benefits the community and visitors. The transport links here are so good it will bring a real benefit to the town to bring touring bands in and invest in our own live music scene. We’re going to make this work so Woking has a live music venue again and a future for original live music that it can be proud of, as well as its heritage.”
The project is entirely community led and will reinvest any profits back to benefit Woking’s residents. It has the support of Woking Borough Council, and is applying for grants towards the extensive refurbishment required to turn the building into a welcoming community space where new training and employment opportunities for technical trades in creative industry can be offered, as well as artistic support and mentoring to emerging artists and access for disabled performers and visitors. The two monthly events currently held at Quake, Schism Rock Club and Mayhem Club Night, will continue. “We plan to have larger music nights, emerging bands and local bands, as well as a vibrant vintage market and different workshops, but it’s up to the community to decide,” Elaine continued. “We want it to cover everything and every age group, every background, but to make it work we need everyone to get behind it, we need people to come forward with their ideas, expertise and skills so it really represents the community it serves.” The Phoenix Cultural Centre volunteer team has been running successful live music events in Woking for several years, including using an empty shop in Goldsworth Road for open mic and feature nights, and in 2016 organising the inaugural Phoenix Rising, an open-air festival of original music in Woking Park emerging from the National ‘Our Big Gig’ community live music festivals they have organised since 2012. If you would like to get involved and support the project by volunteering or donating towards the refurbishment and running costs, please get in touch at phoenixculturalcentre@rocketmail.com

GUILDFORD’S ‘POP UP VILLAGE’ TO OPEN THIS MONTH
A bold idea for using the land that has opened up between Commercial Road and Woodbridge Road should see fruition by the end of November. Guildford’s Pop Up Village will be a temporary retail and event village in Guildford town centre, built using thirty 20ft shipping containers which will act as individual, secure spaces. Retailers selected will be chosen to complement the retail offers already in the town and will include five food and beverage outlets. An integral part of the village will be a unique event space that will feature designated busking areas, as well as a container converted into a stage for live arts. The proposed opening date for Guildford Pop Up Village is late November 2016. If you’re a retailer, artist or performer get in touch with Stephanie.Maynard@Guildford.gov.uk to discuss tenancy details and performance opportunities.
PHYLLIS TUCKWELL HOSPICE IN FARNHAM SEEKS VOLUNTEERS Local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell supports many patients and families who are living with a terminal illness, such as cancer. Some are cared for on the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit, while others receive treatment at home, or come to the Hospice or Beacon Centre for appointments, exercise classes, workshops and day sessions. Phyllis Tuckwell provides a service called Hospice Home Support (HHS) to support those living at home, particularly, those living alone. The charity matches up patients with volunteers, who give around three hours of their week to visit patients in their own homes. They offer practical support - taking patients out, walking their dog, or just going out somewhere for a cup of tea. More importantly though,
they also provide emotional support and companionship, listening when patients want to talk and helping where they can. By helping in this way, HHS volunteers assist, support and empower patients, improving their quality of life and enabling them to stay at home for as long as possible. With an increasing number of patients to care for, Phyllis Tuckwell is looking for more volunteers to help with its Hospice Home Support service. Each volunteer is asked to commit around three hours a week, and in return is provided with comprehensive training and ongoing support. The charity’s next training course will commence in January 2017 and will run on Saturdays for five weeks, after which volunteers will be matched up with patients.

Remember the Somme
November 18th marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Somme. Will Knowlton remembers the darkest conflict of World War I… July 1st this year saw the 100th anniversary of one of the gravest days in British history. This day, one that lives in infamy, was the start of the Battle of the Somme. A part of a combined offensive against the Central Powers by the British, French, Italian and Russian forces, the casualties were catastrophic, with British casualties on the first day alone numbering 57,470. This was the first ma jor engagement utilising Lord Kitchener’s volunteer army, whose casualties were made up of men who up until a short while before were simple farmers, fishermen, tradesman, cobblers, postman and publicans. Normal men who had little training but a steadfast belief to stand by the men to his left and right. This was the first use of tanks on the battlefields and warplanes in the skies. It’s easy to look at the battle now objectively, to remember facts and figures, anecdotes that make the numbers and the human cost more palatable. But the ferocity, carnage and devastation that happened during the offensive is so ingrained into the psyche of our tiny island, so strong, that the subsequent years have left it undiminished. One thinks of battles as short affairs, a day, perhaps two, but the nightmare of the Somme lasted 141 days, until its suspension on November the 18th. The British advanced just seven miles and failed to break the German defence. This, the largest offensive of WWI, saw over a million dead and wounded, and established its place in as one of the bloodiest in human history. This month sees the anniversary of the end of the battle and all over the country, we, the descendants of that great generation, will pause to remember those souls lost to the war. Surrey, like all of Great Britain, gave her men and women, willingly, for a noble and vital cause.
We will remember.

Talking To
Rebecca Ferguson
By Chloe Kearns
Back from France and feeling empowered, Rebecca Ferguson will be taking her fans on a musical journey through heartache and out the other side at G Live on the 14th November. Bonjour, Rebecca! You must be excited to be back in the UK to embark on your Superwoman tour. What can your UK fans expect from your return? It’s going to be a really fun, positive tour, I’m really excited. I just want people to come down and forget their troubles for a day, have a laugh and get up dancing, it’s that kind of vibe.
How would you describe your latest musical offering? It’s very upbeat, positive but at the same time, it’s about a break up. So it’s a break up album, but it’s an album that I want people to be able to play and feel better. I want to be able to help people get through whatever they’re going through and give them a bit of strength. In the end, you have to be able to forgive and in life, accept that things don’t work out.
You’ve said you’ve called the new album Superwoman because you’ve learnt to embrace your vulnerability and see it as a strength; how would you encourage others to do the same? I’ve learnt that most people are struggling with self-love. I’ve got a song on the album called Superwoman that’s all about, actually I am imperfect, but I never said that I was superwoman, I’m just a normal woman, getting through life, but I’m doing superwoman things, as in, I’m getting through it, but I’m not superwoman.
You’ve said that you make a conscious effort to keep ‘Rebecca Ferguson’ and ‘Becky’ separate, how do they combine on stage to be a superwoman? I mean, when I’m on stage, I’m still myself, but I suppose it’s more how I am in business, like this morning I had to send quite a strong, business-like email but other times, I’ll just be Becky with my mates having a sausage roll on the couch with a glass of wine! There’s a time when I’m quite a tough person, a time when obviously I’m quite soft, I’ve got children, and then there’s a time when I’m vulnerable and it all makes me. It all comes together in the end.
What do you have your sights set on next? After the tour, the album, I’d like to go international and then at some point, I would like to focus on some charity work for pregnant women who carry children alone. But I’m also aware that again, I’m not super woman and if you’re going to do something, you’ve got to dedicate yourself properly to it so I’ve just got to get this album out the way first.
In addition to being a distinctive singing sensation, you’re a qualified legal secretary, you own Beauty Boudoir in Liverpool and you are a mum, so you probably have all the super powers you need. But if you could add one more to the list, what would it be? I’d like go back and study human rights law, eventually, I don’t know when but there will be a time; you do yourself a disservice if you’re not fully focussed so you do your best knowing when the right time is, setting your goals properly so that you can put all your time and energy into them.
Rebecca will be putting all her energy into launching her fourth album, which comes out on 14th November. The tour will see her at G Live on 13th November. Visit www.glive.co.uk for more information

Langhe Nebbiolo Giovanni Rosso, Piedmont 2013 / £20.00 “Giovanni Rosso is an acclaimed Barolo producer and this wine is made very close to Barolo using the same grape Nebbiolo, It is a wine that suits the season well as it pairs nicely with the foods in season such as rabbit, game and lamb. It is not as intense as a Barolo but has a certain amount of subtlety and elegance. It is unmistakeably Nebbiolo but in its purest form. “The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 6 months and is bottled without filtration. It is a wine that shows a lot of complexity with a beautiful aftertaste which just leaves you reaching for a second glass!” Available from Cellar Wines, The Old Cellar, High Street, Ripley, Woking GU23 6BB | Tel: 01483 610610

WHERE TO EAT: THE INN AT WEST END
By Rich Lee An unsung temple to superb modern British food, a visit to the Inn at West End was well overdue… It would be a stretch to describe the Inn at West End as an ‘undiscovered gem’, as much as I’d like to. I mean, it’s already earnt its fair share of kudos from the likes of the Good Hotel Guide, Fine Wine Magazine and the Good Pub Guide who named the Inn ‘Surrey Dining Pub of the Year 2016-2017’. Then there’s the loyal, local following they have made up of nearby residents, golf club patrons and business types that breeze through for coffee and brunch. But the Inn at West End has to be one of the least visible restaurants around, situated as it is in the blink-and-you’llmiss-it little ‘burb of West End outside
Woking, which may partially explain why not enough folk are talking about it. Regardless, the Inn’s owners, Gerry and Ann Price, have been doggedly evolving this small plot from its original pub, the Wheatsheaf, and over seventeen years have turned their modest inn into something really rather special. Bright, fresh and modern inside, the Inn is an inviting blue oasis dressed with minimal fuss, a space that’s immediately welcoming thanks to cheerful staff and the friendly owners. Last year they built a suite of luxurious boutique hotel rooms around a central courtyard bursting with herbs, vegetables and wildflowers. Throw in a wine shop that’s as much an extension of Gerry’s fierce passion for good plonk as it is a handy extra service for customers, and it should be clear just how much of a unique establishment the Inn at West End really is.
The menus make for the kind of bedtime reading that hopeless food wonks like myself conceal between the pages of a paperback late at night (something you now can’t unknow.) Flavours and ingredients float off the page with a gently enticing, haiku simplicity: ‘gentleman’s’ relish; smoked plum, sorrel oil and dashi crumb; charcoal and yuzu and mayonnaise, and… well. These and every other combination of layers within each dish read like a promise of something wonderful to be discovered. Okay, maybe you could argue I was reading too much into it. But I can happily say that every plate more than rewarded the intrigue. From the off, the sheer technique on display in the kitchen was genuinely astonishing, demonstrating a light touch, a keen eye and a fantastic feel for flavours.
FOOD & DRINK
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
If I’d been eager to finally cast off the slim shackles of summer and fall into the hearty embrace of autumn, then a dish of pork belly proved the perfect invitation. The pork itself was every kind of perfect, with a wafer-thin crispy skin crowning rippling layers of unctuous smoky meat. The whole plate offered a pebbled ‘garden’ of artfully arranged charred corn and pickled baby onions amid dabs of apple puree and streaks of coriander salsa verde for a fresh lift. And all this was merely a starter. A main course brought thick fingers of sweet and tender duck breast, lightly infused with lavender but offset with a round of salt baked celeriac for a big savoury hit. Perked up further with golden, pickled raisins, a tangy celeriac remoulade, apple puree and a deep, rich jus, it was everything autumn should taste of. Then there was the ‘open’ lasagne of wild mushrooms which was a contender for the finest marriage of God’s edible gifts – namely fungi, garlic, cream and great fragrant, fluffy clouds of
parmesan cheese – ever assembled on a plate. Touched with a little spinach and truffle oil and a sprinkle of walnuts, this was pasta at its indulgent best. A dedicated pastry chef – a lamentably rare thing for many pub-restaurants – meant that a forest fruit millefeuille was perfectly brittle and sweet, collapsing in layers of luscious cream, pastry and berries. A parfait, a dessert that’s been coming up on the heels of the chocolate brownie as Surrey’s most ubiquitous pud, still exuded the Inn’s exceptional creativity. Think cool and creamy camomile and white chocolate parfait, soft grilled peaches and swirled with honey and chewy granola – you could almost get away with eating this for breakfast (just don’t tell your dentist.) The fact that the Inn has been quietly doing this kind of thing for years makes me love the place even more. So for fine dining without the fuss, the Inn at West End deserves to be a vital destination for food lovers everywhere.

Recipes:
Autumn Delights By Helen Askew
APPLE AND BLACKBERRY CAKE Making the most of autumnal fruit, this cake is super pretty, whilst being fantastically simple to prepare. Serve warm with cream for an easy dessert or cool with a pot of tea for a daytime treat.
METHOD This cake is made to an all in one recipe, making it quick and simple to prepare. •
Firstly, combine the sifted plain flour, baking powder and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl.
•
Next, add the melted and cooled butter, sugar, milk and eggs to the bowl and, using either a free standing or hand held mixer, whisk the ingredients together. Do not over whisk – the mixture should come together easily and will resemble a thick batter.
•
Transfer the batter to your pre prepared cake tin, before adding the fruit topping. Each apple should be peeled and cored and (dependent on size) sliced into 8-12 pieces. You can then place the sliced apple in rings around the cake top, before adding the blackberries, which should be carefully pushed into the cake mix. Dot the butter over the fruit, before dusting with the light brown sugar.
•
Finally, bake the cake for 40/45 minutes, until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool in the tin, before transferring to a wire rack.
INGREDIENTS For • • • • • • • • •
the cake 250g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp cinnamon 85g butter, melted 100g light brown sugar 150 mls milk 2 large eggs 4 eating apples 250g blackberries
For • • • •

CANDY COATED TOFFEE APPLES Not for the faint hearted, toffee apples are a serious sugar overload! However, dipped first in caramel and then smothered in popping candy, these apples are great fun to make and gorgeous to look at. Serve on bonfire night for a seasonal treat. INGREDIENTS • • • •
8 un-waxed red apples 8 oz caster sugar 2 tbsp golden syrup Popping candy
METHOD •
Firstly, line a baking tray or large plate with non-stick baking paper.
•
Remove any apple stems and place the fruit upside down on your plate or tray, pushing a wooden skewer or lollypop stick through each one.
•
To make the caramel, place the sugar, syrup and two tablespoons of water into a heavy bottomed pan and place on a medium heat. Be aware that hot or boiling caramel can be dangerous, so keep young children and pets at a safe distance.
•
•
Once you have reached either this consistency or the required temperature, remove the pan from the stove and place the base of the pan into cold water for a few seconds. This will stop the caramel changing colour, but be careful not to splash any water into the pan.
•
Now for the fun part. Carefully dip each apple into the caramel, leaving an area of exposed apple skin at the top of the fruit. Next, dip the caramel coated apple into the popping candy.
•
Finally, place the decorated apples onto the non-stick paper and allow to harden before serving.
If you have a sugar thermometer, heat the caramel to 140 degrees. If you are preparing the caramel without a thermometer, heat your sugar, syrup and water until it transforms into a glossy medium brown caramel.
And voila – super cool and colourful toffee apples!
PISTACHIO AND CRANBERRY CHOCOLATE COATED FLAPJACKS Perfect to pack if you are heading out on bonfire night, flapjacks really are the ultimate comfort snack. INGREDIENTS • • • • •
85g dried cranberries 85g pistachio nuts 85g butter 100g golden caster sugar 3tbsp golden syrup
• • • •
100g porridge oats 100g rolled oats 100g dark chocolate Extras: One 24cm square non-stick baking tin
METHOD •
Set the oven to 160 degrees.
•
In a heavy bottomed saucepan melt the butter, sugar and syrup, stirring until combined.
•
Stir in the oats, pistachio nuts and dried cranberries, making sure that everything is coated in the melted sugar, butter and syrup.
•
Transfer the mix to the non-stick tin and bake for 20 – 25 minutes.
•
As the flapjacks cool cut them into 12 small pieces.
•
Finally, melt the chocolate over simmering water. Dip the bars into the chocolate – leaving half uncovered – or use a spoon to drizzle the melted chocolate across the flapjacks.

RHYMETIME AND STORYTIME AT SURREY’S LIBRARIES Rhyme time events are a great way to introduce your little ones to your local library. Sessions are aimed at babies and toddlers aged under five, along with their parents and carers. During sessions, everyone will have a chance to have interactive fun while sharing nursery rhymes. Action songs and percussion instruments make these sessions truly engaging and the repetitive rhythms have the benefit of supporting language development. Rhyme Times are free and generally last 30 minutes. Library storytimes are generally aimed at two to five year-olds and provide a fun and enjoyable introduction to books and libraries for young children. Sharing books and stories with young children can help to build good language and listening skills and give them a head start when they begin school. Library storytimes can foster a life long love of reading and show children that it is a fun place to be. Sessions are free and generally last 30 minutes.

NOVEMBER 2016
“Help, My Child is a Cyborg!” By Will Knowlton
How to ween them off the screen in three easy steps Those of us guilty of procreation know the pain. You attempt a conversation with your offspring and in return you get grunts. You turn, frowning in frustration only to realise your little darling is completely distracted by something emanating from a flatscreen that cost more than your entire childhood’s cache of pocket money. You sigh and turn back to the Nespresso machine wondering what happened to the ‘big plan’? Where’s my condo? Where’s my Bentley? Why does this creature no longer communicate in English and what, for the love of God, is Pokémon? Start with the three basic steps...
Step 1 :
Step 2:
Establish Goals •
So before you start, work out what your targets are. You do this at work, use the same framework on your kids. Ask yourself these questions:
•
What types of technology do you want to allow into your home? Just TV or is iPad ok. Is iPad just for restaurants (when you have to sit for 2 hours with Aunt Maud and you’re as bored as your kids are but hey, at least you can drink through her stories about how Bob next door swears the NHS is on its last legs because he couldn’t get an appointment for his ingrowing toenail.)
•
How much time do you (NOT your kid) think is reasonable for your kid(s) to use technology each day?
•
Where will your child be allowed to use these devices? Hiding up in their room? How do you know what their actually doing/watching?
•
Are certain times of day off limits for technology use? TV in the morning before school? No wonder it takes an aeon to get them out the door.
•
What types of content you will allow your child to view or interact with? You might be fine with your 12 year old watching Nickelodeon but how to you explain smooching teens to your 5 year old who’s sat with them watching.
Screen Time You’ve probably asked yourself, “How much screen time is too much?” There really is no formula to determine this. Think of it this way; the next time your child is sat in front of, say, the telly, go in quietly, stand behind them and switch it off with no warning. Now observe their behaviour. They’re screaming, shouting right? If that’s not a sign of addiction then what is? So, you might consider (and this is going to sound crazy) NO TV during the week. Remember when you were a kid, what was TV like during the week? Awful. You went without because it wasn’t there. Are you mentally scarred because of a lack of Paw Patrol? How cool were Saturday morning cartoons? That’s because they were a well-earned treat.
Decide What Comes Before Screen Time
Step 3:
You go to work. Do you get paid to do nothing? Nope: Life is what it is; you want a holiday, you work for it. You want to go to the pub but your in-tray’s full? You work through it. You want a new car? You and your partner sit down and work out what you need to do to get it, then, guess what? You work for it. Why be miserable on your own? Put that ethos on your kids. They want some iPad? Fine, but you need the bins out. You want to watch Henry Danger? That’s cool, but I need your uniform in the laundry basket and the laundry basket downstairs. Kids generally mutiny for as long as they think it’s working. When they realise it isn’t, they get on board bless their wholesome hearts.

sports news Surrey Half Marathon offers Personal Pacing service Each year, the Surrey Half Marathon offers all entrants a free pacing team to help them achieve their dream finish times. Should runners wish to use the service, they are able to meet these pacer before the start of the race, and then run alongside them for the continuation of the 13.1 miles. Sticking with a pacer can ensure that runners stay motivated and do not slip ‘off pace’ for their desired finish time. Xempo’s pacing team are easily spotted at any point along the run too, as they wear large coloured flags on their backs indicating specific finish times, which generally include: Sub 1:30, Sub 1:45, Sub 1:50, Sub 2hrs, and Sub 2:30. Being offered alongside this traditional pacing service for 2017 is a brand-new concept to the world of running. The Surrey Half will be the first UK running event to offer a bespoke personal pacing package for runners. Those who opt into this personal service will receive 1-to-1 support and motivation from a highly experienced Xempo team runner to help guarantee their personal best finish times.

TEST DUMMY: Godalming Wing Chun Chinese Boxing Remember that guy you once saw outside Wetherspoons that twisted another bloke’s arm, clocked him and pinned him to the floor until he saw tears? That’s Wing Chun. It’s one of the cool martial arts. One of the ones they use in films and stuff. It’s Chinese (isn’t everything nowadays?) and it’s self-defence. It practises grappling and striking in close-range combat. Kind of like Bruce Lee without the mad kicks. Here’s a bit of history about Wing Chun: the earliest known mentions of Wing Chun date to the period of the Red Boat Opera, a kind of big opera Chinese Blazin’ Squad that toured China about 200 years ago and used Wing Chun to defeat government troops. The common legend, as told by Yip Man (the fella that actually had Bruce Lee as a student,) involves a young woman called Yim Wing-Chun, who apparently rejected a local warlord’s marriage offer but said she’d reconsider
if he could beat her up. To cut a long story short, she then met a crazy Buddhist nun who taught her how to fight and she beat the warlord up leaving the rest as history. But now, 200-odd years on, I’m sat on a bench, in Godalming, bleeding from the nose because a 15-year-old boy punched me when I wasn’t looking. Thanks a lot, Yim. For the evening, Joe Segar was my Yip Man, and I was his Bruce Lee. Joe is the club’s head guy. The master. The main man. He warned me pre-session that this was an egofree zone. He also warned me that I needed to be pretty open-minded about what I was going to try. I nodded in agreement, our photographer and I positioned ourselves and we warmed up. After breaking a sweat and shocking my core by using it for the first time in the best part of ten years, we moved onto the harder stuff: the contact, the pain. Joe would show us a move, a combination, we’d then pair off and try it out. I was partnered with a lad who, despite being eight years younger than me, possessed a real adult beard and was about a foot taller than me. I wasn’t going to let this affect me. We sparred, practising moves Joe had shown us. I

landed a few and so did he. We were fighting fair before I was planted a good one around the nose as soon as I showed the slightest lapse in concentration. For the final half-hour of the session we were to spar for two minutes, before moving on to the next person. This would give me a chance to spar with both the experienced and less experienced of the class. Come the end of the class, I was spent. I had bled, winced and at one point, almost peed. But for all the pain and hard work, I liked it, I liked that I had to think rather than do. Wing Chun was more in-depth than many martial arts. It was as much about mind games as it was about the moves themselves. I thanked Joe, my Yip Man, bowed, like you do, and apologised that I couldn’t quite be his Bruce Lee. For all my hard work and sheer determination – and outright competitiveness – I’m not one for martial arts, no matter how hard I try. But for someone looking for an alternative, a new aspect of martial arts or to really try something new, who knows it could be what you need. Wing Chun is certainly worth looking into and you won’t be disappointed.

Smashers Add More New Faces to 2016/17 Roster Surrey Smashers added two badminton veterans to their squad ahead of the 2016/17 AJ Bell National Badminton League season. British number three Sam Parsons has featured in the NBL since it started in 2014, playing for former outfit MK Badminton for two seasons and featuring in a total of seven match-nights. Sam’s career highlights include winning the Senior English National Championships and Israeli International in 2015, as well as twice holding the U19 Men’s Singles National Championship title. He also reached the semifinals of the Belgian International earlier this year. Danish international Marie Ropke, who also signs from Milton Keynes, took three doubles wins in five appearances last season including a thriller against Smashers’ Robert Blair and Emily Westwood on match-night one. The 29 year old’s top career achievement came in 2011, when she reached the semi final of the All England Championships alongside fellow Dane Line Damkjaer Kruse. Her other successes
come in the form of European medals and a silver with her country at the Sudirman Cup. Following her signing Marie said: “I am really looking forward to playing in the NBL again, as the atmosphere, the match play and scoring system are all really fun. “I hope I can bring some experience to the team, and of course my ambition is to win games.” Prior to Smashers’ first game of the season, Parsons said: “My experiences of the NBL so far are good as I have enjoyed playing for a team and enjoyed the new challenges of the quirky scoring system. “I have been doing a lot of work on how I start matches, keeping in mind how the scoring system works, so hopefully this can show this season. “I am very much looking forward to playing for Surrey Smashers as our team is very strong and they share a great relationship with each other so I think this could help everyone to perform to the best of their abilities.”
Storm Make First Signing of the autumn Mid-courter Mikki Austin is the first player to re-sign for Surrey Storm ahead of the 2017 Vitality Netball Superleague season. The 23-year-old signed from Hertfordshire Mavericks two seasons ago, making her debut on the opening night of the 2015 campaign against Manchester Thunder, and instantly became a fans’ favourite for her passion on and off court. A harsh injury sustained midway into the season saw Austin sit out for just under half of the campaign, but she was ever-present on the sidelines lending her valuable experience to the rest of the team. Mikki returned to competitive action at the start of the 2016 season, playing her part in Storm’s back-to-back title success and being vital in the club’s community coaching programme across London and the South East.
Following her re-signing, Austin said: “I am hugely excited to be back on board with Surrey Storm for another season, with a new generation of netball, new players and new coaching staff. I am keen to get started and build towards achieving a hat-trick of championship wins for Surrey! “Thank you so much to the fans who continue to back Storm every step of the way. I cannot wait to see you all at our home games and Netball London Live. This season is sure to be a cracker!” Mikki is the first player to commit her immediate future to Storm, with more expected in the coming weeks as trials and pre-season training gets underway. News of tickets and fixtures are expected to be released soon - be sure to keep an eye on www.surreystormnetball. co.uk for all of the latest news first!

ooooo How to make the W B elcome the advent season and all those who enter your door by foraging for foliage and fashioning yourself a really wild Christmas wreath.
1. Cover the wire frame evenly with damp moss (it feeds your foliage with the good stuff which makes it last longer), wrapping the wire firmly around the moss and frame to secure. 2. When the frame is completely covered, cut the wire and secure by wrapping around the outer wire circle several times. Cut off any excess. 3. Select the foliage you wish to choose. Choose three different types of foliage to provide a variety of shapes, textures and colours for your wreaths. The Piece of foliage needs to be approximately three inches long. Three pieces of foliage to a bunch, laying three bunches of each type of foliage at a time.
5. Take the second bunch of foliage and place it on the frame, slightly overlapping the first bunch to conceal the stems. Secure with wire a couple of times wrapping it around the frame. 6. Once you have placed the third bunch on the frame and secured it, change to a different foliage and repeat process again. Move the frame around as you work, so that you are applying foliage at an approximate one o’clock position.
TIPS FOR YOUR WREATH!
PPPP
4. Secure the wire on to the outer edge of the wire frame, at a one o’clock position. Lay a bunch of foliage at a slight angle, with stems laying on the body of the mossed frame. Wrap the wire around the frame a couple of times to secure foliage.
7. Once you have placed the third bunch of your third type of foliage, repeat the whole process again. Three bunches of the first foliage, three bunches of the second foliage, and three bunches of the third foliage and continue until you have completely covered the frame.
8. Secure the wire on the outer frame edge – cut the wire and wrap the end around the frame edge pulling firmly.
• Create a wild look by choosing longer stems –
remember it needs to fit on your front door - a 12 inch frame will give you an approximately 14 inch wreath!
• Use native foliage to make your wreath last longer. • Lasting foliage includes the evergreen family, holly,
pine, bay, ivy, juniper, eucalyptus and rosemary – go out this weekend and forage your foliage!
• Pine, Rosemary and eucalyptus will give off a
fragrant scent, which one can only associate with Christmas.
• If you notice that your wreath is starting to dry out, spray with water to moisten.
• Pheasant feather, pine cones and rose hip make the perfect accessories for your wreath.
• When adding extras use a stub wire - great for keeping your cones in place.

Our House
ith the winter fast approaching, our primal love of a real fire means that more and more of us are looking to wood burning stoves to transform our tired fireplaces. Not only do real stoves and fireplaces envelop us in comfort and warmth, they are increasingly becoming stylish features in their own right.
Our House
And some of the most beautiful and efficient fireplaces are created by MORSØ, the oldest stove manufacturer in the world with 162 years’ experience. There are many great features of MORSØ stoves worth considering: Stoves vs Open Fires
How Green Are Wood Burners? Compared to fossil fuels, burning wood is sustainable and a better alternative for our environment. Many stove owners can turn off most of their radiators and rely solely on their stove. You can even boil a kettle or warm your soup on top of a wood burner.
Our House
• 1 Kilogram of fuel will produce at least three times more heat when burned in a stove compared to an open fire. This is because unlike with an open fire, the oxygen feed is controlled as the stove is a closed fire box and has controls for oxygen inlet
54
Morso stoves are around 80% efficient compared to around 15% for an open fire
Why Choose MORSØ?
• MORSØ is the oldest stove manufacturer in the world: 163 years and counting. This is why the Fire Gallery is happy to give you a 10-year extended warranty on your new addition to your home. • 98% of the material used in MORSØ’s cast iron stoves comes from recycled scrap. Imagine this: your lovely new stove could have been a bicycle in another life!
• The register plate which is installed above the flue and stove will stop any warm air generated escaping out the chimney
• 80% of energy needed for the manufacturing of their stoves comes from sustainable energy source, mainly wind.
• With a stove, it is not the fire which warms the room as such, it is the cast iron / steel which absorbs the heat and radiates the heat into the room
So be warm, be stylish, and be happy, this winter and beyond!

ervice. Real, quality, nothing is too much trouble service. It’s a rare commodity in today’s busy world. That’s why, when you find it, you want to sing it from the rooftops. So let’s start right now – by singing the praises of a family bathroom company that epitomizes the saying ‘going the extra mile’. Surrey Bathroom Studio.
Our House
So what makes Surrey Bathrooms so different? Well, it all starts with the people behind the business - Martin and Arran. Both have huge amounts of experience to share. Martin has lived and breathed bathrooms for as long as he can remember, working in showrooms and product manufacturing for over 20 years. Arran started with selling bathrooms online and also has a reassuring level of knowledge and expertise. It was when working online that he realized that he could offer so much more of his expertise by opening a showroom. He joined up with Martin and Surrey Bathrooms was born. “We are an old fashioned service business”, Arran tells us. “You talk to me, or anyone of the team, and you get factual, sensible bathroom advice. That’s something built on our collective years of knowledge. We guide our customers through the whole process - we couldn’t get this across online.” The knowledge and experience of the team is evident from the moment that you enter the showroom. The displays are designed to inspire and educate. Constantly evolving as the team discover new and updated bathrooms, it’s a treasure trove for anyone wanting ideas. With the emphasis on real life scenarios, there are working bays built to illustrate

Our House
everything from the full range of showering experiences to working wet-room displays and bathroom lighting. Talk to anyone in the know and they will tell you, the trick of a good bathroom is the planning. Yet it’s amazing how many bathroom projects fail at this stage. A good bathroom designer will provide the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality. With his market experience, Martin is aware that many of the well-known bathroom brands and designers have lost their way. “Many brands put design over functionality”, he tells us. “They often flatter designers egos, without considering affordability and functionality. Our bathroom experience means that we know a good (or bad) product when we see one. We steer away from these suppliers and specialize in a select number of UK supplied brands.”
Our House
So, the design is done. The product ordered. But there is still the question of finding the right person to fit it. Fortunately, Surrey Bathrooms are still there to support you. They can use their local knowledge to select from a handful of quality fitting teams locally. These teams work closely with Martin and Arran to ensure that every stage, from the planning right through to the finished project, lives up to your expectations. As you can probably tell, we are bowled over by this ‘old fashioned’ approach to bathrooms. In fact we are pretty sure that, once you discover Surrey Bathrooms, you won’t use another bathroom supplier again. If you want to find out more (and pick their brains) they are open 7 days a week and located just off the A3 Southbound, next to American Golf – set your satnav to GU2 7RZ or call them on 01483 536168 today.

Declutter Your Home & Get Organised for Christmas
uuuuu 1. The Lounge:
Most families spend a lot of time in the lounge and so clutter tends to build up here. Try the laundry basket approach…grab your laundry basket and gather up everything in the lounge that shouldn’t be there. Now take the laundry basket to the kitchen table and sort out which room each item needs to be returned to, create a pile for each room and then return each pile one by one to their rightful place. Next declutter any shelves, cupboards and drawers, donate old books and toys and make space for the new ones that will be coming in over the Christmas period. It is a fantastic feeling, having a fresh, clutter free room as a blank canvas when it comes to putting up the Christmas decorations and you will find it all the more enjoyable.
wwwwwwwwwwwww 2. The Kitchen
Tackle each cupboard one by one as your work your way around the kitchen. Throw out any food that is past its sell-by date and be ruthless with this. You’ll be surprised at how much extra space you can create to be filled with Christmas goodies. Clear the worktops of any clutter by putting things where they belong and store away any appliances that won’t be used over Christmas. This will give you more space for prepping and make cooking Christmas dinner so much less stressful. Sort out the pots and pans cupboard, again, be ruthless and donate anything that you don’t need or use on a regular basis. Organise the remaining pots and pans and store those that you do use regularly at the front of the cupboard for ease of access. Plate racks are great for storing pan lids which often take up a lot of space in your cupboard.
T
he run up to Christmas can often feel like one huge to-do list and leave you feeling exhausted! Charlotte Jones, Professional Organiser and Founder of Everything in its Place based in Woking talks us through how to declutter your home and get organised for Christmas 2016. Take the stress out of Christmas this year, get on top of your to do list and spend more time enjoying yourself with loved ones. After all, isn’t that really what Christmas is all about?
3. The Dining Room
Get the dining room clear and clutter free in plenty of time for Christmas. If you use a special table cloth, place mats and dinner service for Christmas then get these out and take sure that they are clean and ready to use. You could even lay the table a couple of days before Christmas to save yourself a job on the day.
wwwwwwwwwwwww 4. The Kids Rooms
The kids are likely to receive a lot of new toys, books and games for Christmas and these will all need to be stored somewhere in the new year. Get the kids to help with this one, perhaps encourage them to throw out one or two toys per week that they don’t play with anymore and donate these to charity. Kids generally love the idea that their old toys can go on to have a new home and make another child happy and this is a particularly nice idea around Christmas time.
wwwwwwwwwwwww 5. Try the One in Two Out Approach
For each Christmas gift that you receive, try to throw out or donate two of its counterparts. For example, if the kids receive new pyjamas, can you throw out two pairs that they have outgrown? If you receive a new DVD for Christmas, can two old ones be donated to charity? This is a great way to prevent clutter building up and you can use this method throughout the year whenever anything new comes into the house. and the groceries will also stay nice and fresh.
