A £36 million regeneration plan for the coast at Whitley Bay is well underway

Lo c at i o n & To u r i s m Over 2000 years ago, settlers crossed the sea and named their new settlement Whitley, meaning ‘white lea’ or ‘pasture land’. The name however caused endless confusion with nearby town Whitby, so since 1890, the town was re-christened Whitley Bay. Since then, Whitley Bay has grown in size to 36,000 and has become increasingly popular with generations of visitors. Popular as a party town, Whitley Bay comes alive at weekends and bank holidays when the young and old enjoy the nightlife. Even if nightclubs aren’t your thing, Whitley Bay has a wide range of intimate restaurants offering good food and good value. Complementing this vibrant seaside town, Whitley Bay offers an award winning beach that stretches from St Mary’s Lighthouse all the way towards Cullercoats Bay. It is a popular place for recreation and is regularly used by walkers. The promenade and The Links have wonderful walks with the beach as a magnificent backdrop. Local amenities include a skatepark, a children’s playground, a new swimming pool and the newly refurbished Whitley Bay Playhouse, making it a good all-round family destination. The ice rink is home to the Whitley Warriors Ice Hockey team and the town also has a rugby team and a football club.

D i s ta n c e • Hotel 52 is only 25 minutes from Newcastle City Centre by Metro, with Newcastle Airport only 30 minutes’ drive by car. • The International Cruise Terminal at Royal Quays is just 10 minutes’ drive away. • Durham is only 40 minutes away from Hotel 52 with stunning places in Northumberland such as Alnwick being only 50 minutes away.

The seafront masterplan covers a stretch from St Mary’s Lighthouse to Cullercoats Bay

REGENERATION A multi-million pound regeneration is under way in Whitley Bay to help revitalise the coast. The council of North Tyneside has developed a £36m seafront masterplan, which covers a stretch from St Mary’s Lighthouse to Cullercoats Bay and includes a string of projects. One particular project is the Spanish City Dome. Once a permanent fun fair, it is known for its 180 ft-long renaissance-style dome and is a Grade II listed building. There are also towers on either side of the entrance, each of which carries a half-life-size female bacchanalian figure in lead, one holding cymbals, the other a tambourine. Renovation of the Spanish City Dome started in September 2016 which will allows visitors to be able to look up and see the magnificent rotunda in all of its glory. The project will also involve recreating many of the original features that have been lost over time. The dome is expected to reopen spring 2018. It will also be offered as a wedding and conference venue featuring places to eat and drink. On the Central Lower Promenade work has started to reconstruct the sea defences to give the area a much needed revamp. On the Northern Promenade, the council have plans to revitalise the area from Watts Slope to Brierdene. Under these plans, a newlook ‘Northern Promenade Walk’ will be created. For St Mary’s Lighthouse, the plans are to repair and repaint the walls and roof of the lighthouse tower. This will mean replacement of damaged glazing, better toilets and a new internal lift to the first floor. In addition, the original lighthouse optic (light) is to be rebuilt, and extensions are to be developed to provide classrooms, exhibition space and a revamped shop.
