What do you wish to be awaited in a place you are going to explore? If the landscape lying in front you are the one place you go to, how do you discover its hidden characters, objects and stories? Exploring through the eye of a voyager, you may find new and bizarre things. Or, perhaps, by projecting our imagination to the space before us, we change our preconception towards this space. And, maybe, with texts, photography and paintings to represent the landscape, It might allow us to enter the scenery and interact with the people and events in the streets.

Doodle-ramblings in Shek Mun Lau On In, Crystal (11A) Size Variable, Photograph and Illustrations From my art work, I used an interesting way to let others be more familiar with Shek Mun. As Shek Mun is an industrial area, many people always defined industrial area as a heavy place. To change people’s definition of Shek Mun, I had chosen some places in Shek Mun that people are familiar with and some new explore places, and I hand drew some illustrations on the plastic cards that were suitable to those places I had chosen, by using marker pen and white out. Then I held the plastic cards with drawing at the front, with a suitable point of view, to make interaction between illustrations on my plastic cards and the places. Then I captured it by photograph. I hope that it could change people’s heavy definition to become interesting definition for Shek Mun.

My photographs are using long exposure to capture night activities in Shek Mun. As I know, Shek Mun is an industrial place, it is very busy in office hour, after that, it will become quite and silent. Therefore, I use this kind of method to represent that Shek Mun is not only for people to work or study.

There’s a mountain in Shek Mun, people notice its existence but they might think that either there’s no way to go there or there’s no time to discover it. So I pick up stuff there and also blow up the stuff that I picked. I want people to know that it isn’t just an ordinary, borin’ mountain.

Exploring a place is all about imagination from what the environment has irritated and inspired you. Shek Mun has always given people the impression of being an urban area or, even having no impression. However, with a more detailed and crazy mind we can actually see the different sides of Shek Mun. In the project, I am going to make a real door and put it in different areas in Shek Mun. When you think of door you think that you have a way to enter that place. The places would be some areas that we couldn’t enter but with the door. We can have more imagination or even the illusion of being able to get in that restricted area.

Free Hug Lau Ka Wing, Celine (11C) 140 cm, Installation Regarding Shek Mun and Shatin area, the first impression for me is very grey and soulless. I want Shatin to become a warm society, and everyone deserves a warm hug and care. So I want to creat a huggable bear for everyone to have a warm hug everyday.

Shek Mun is an industrial area, people will feel noisy and tired here. However, On Hing Lane, the tunnel, is a place which I could find peace and quietness as the inner side of it is in green color. In my imagination, after passing this green tunnel, we could get into another place, which is related to here. So I chose Xing An Li natural reserve in Da Xing An Ling, which has the reflected name with Hing On Lane, to relate to the tunnel.

Artist’s Comments

Unearthed Tjota, Johnson (11C) 100cm×100cm, Mixed Media This work is inspired by a street singer who would appear in the Shek Mun’s pathway to industrial area in late evening. Her apperance makes me ask myself why a person would choose this boring, crowdless community to perform. Is it that the purpose of her doing this is not mainly for the audience? She may value something little, yet meaningful. There are little objects that I collected from Shek Mun representing that people have to feel those little things or try to value them in order to have that spiritual return. I put these under the Shek Mun map pieces according to their places located on the map. The map is printed on transparent plastic sheets and sealed with resin. The live performer is like the bright part of Shek Mun, so that the light from the light box will shine from the bottom, through the little objects, out to the audience. The whole process is controlled by the audiences as they speak on the microphone. After that the audiences are allowed to get a piece of Shek Mun away, so that they can see the little objects hidden under it.

Differences in a Street Shek Mun Rainbow Warm Quote Law Pui Yuen, Panny (11D) 50cm×50cm, Acrylic Shek Mun is an industrial area which alway make people feel bored and deserted. After exploring this place, I found that people who appear in Shek Mun are only passing visitors, they work here and we study here with no feeling. Therefore I decided to create an artwork to make people feel warm. I will create a girl who is holding a board with a warm quote. I hope that the quote can amke people feel warm and know that there is someone who cares about them.

Ng Lok Hang, Celia (11D) Size Variable, Ribbon Shek Mun’s industrial area is not rich in colour, always giving people a bored and deserted impression. I think it is challenging to find some bright colours there, so I decided to create an artwork base on colour. I am going to seek some colourful objects and link them together with ribbon to form a Shek Mun. I hope that people who work in Shek Mun, or even passengers, would be suprised and feel warm when they see the my Shek Mun rainbow.

Chan Long Hin, Ivan (11E) 55cm×16cm×16cm, Mixed Media Nowadays the land shortage problem growing in Hong Kong seriously. To bring out the problem, this truck model is base on the ping street in Shek Mun and I paint the view that what the driver can see when crossing the ping road. On the left is Marriot hotel, on right haand side is Li Fung centre. For the material i used the cardboard which pick up from Shek Mun, clay and plastic box.

Shek Mun’s map Lau Jade (11E) Size Variable, Painting Lots of people describe Shek Mun as an industrial or deserted place. In my artwork, I want to show that Shek Mun is the place which is a beautiful town. Many people just haven’t discovered yet. After participating in the artist in residence I have learnt that if we try to be more creative, we will find that there are many possibilities that can be made in Shek Mun. That’s the reason I painted a Shek Mun map to show that there are also lots of interesting places to visit. Let’s try to know more about this place and you will find it great.

*Students put their ideas into their selected frame of landscape and eventually discussed their work with Mr. Tang and I. I am grateful for this invitation from school and am delighted to work with Vangi and Mr. Tang because they are such passionate and energetic people. I’d like to also thank the students. It is a true feeling to spend time with them, and, honestly, seeing everyone sang and had breakfast together in the morning class on the grass, it made me content. Perhaps what we need is not a chance for creating but to be able to stand within the scenery in a frame, a chance to be seen and understood.

Course Outline and Ideas:

L2/Understand the differences between texts, images and paintings as documentation and the need of them.

L3/Students have to design methods to instruct viewers to observe and also use someone else’s method to enter Shek Mun. Observe documentations according to its instructions. For examples: Ask a stranger in the street for an adjective to describe Shek Mun; Give hugs to 3 strangers and kisses to 4 people and take a photo; Write down interesting conversations you overhear in the street

L5/Find the farthest place from school building in the drawing. How do you define the furthest place if the school is the starting point? What is there in the furthest place? Walk to the furthest place and take a photo of the school from there before the end of the class.

L6/Bring students to a factory that produce handmade skin care products in Shek Mun, without the students knowing it, and make lip balms mixing with tiny plants we find in Shek Mun. I suppose this may help them to become closer with the area they study in.

L8/Students print their landscape photos via light on white paper by cyanotype printing. To let students experience matters in reality, they have to stand before the landscape frame, holding photosensitive paper, which has a film that has captured scenery selected by them on it. From developing images and witnessing time gradually forming people and landscapes in a paper – a creation was born.

L1/Introduction: On journeys and time. We draw a map of Shek Mun on the ground. For all that vague impressions of Shek Mun, students only manage to jot down little information. Thus, this Lesson’s goal is to transform places we see daily into imaginable sceneries.

L7/Secondary school has such early morning classes. It would be nice to have a relaxing breakfast so the students could forget about schoolwork for a while! So we go for a breakfast in the little mountain that can be spotted from school. Looking from the campus, it is a scenery of a bunch of students having breakfast and chilling beside a highway.
