WHERE TO SPLURGE I always advise clients to splurge on high quality area rugs. If you invest in the right rug you will have it for decades. The better quality rugs will not shed their fibers and will be durable against wear and tear.

Afterall, these are meant to be walked on!

Upholstery is another area I always encourage my clients to splurge on. The quality really makes a difference in your level of overall comfort. If you get a solidly built sofa you can also recover it several times over.

Toss cushions is the other final area worth splurging on. Clients often faint at the price of custom designer pillows. But in my mind these are the unique items that only you have. They add both personality and

visual interest. I always have my pillows made with a feather/ down fill insert for added softness with a zipper. Always look to buying a pillow that you can remove the cover to wash and change out seasonally!

Most important and often overlooked is lighting. There are so many wonderful lighting options now these days that don’t have to break the bank. Fun wall sconces can add boat loads of designer chic at a non-designer price point.

WHERE TO SAVE

Ultimately, you can mix your decor up and still have it look expensive. Whatever combination you choose to go with to create your high-low design, just remember that it’s ultimately your home. Make sure that whatever you select reflect your personal taste and you’ll never go wrong. CREATING THE PERFECT OUTDOOR

Kitchen

The kitchen continues to be one of the best ways to increase a home’s value, but I don’t mean kitchens in their traditional form. A real estate analysis revealed that homes with outdoor kitchens sold for 25% more than expected (source: Zillow, 2017). As modern homes get smaller in square footage, homeowners are increasingly focusing their

attentions on the outdoors to make the most of every inch of their living space - inside and out. Recently, the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) uncovered what’s trending in outdoor kitchen design. Here are some top trends, and how to achieve them.

GET BACK TO NATURE

The NKBA report reveals that the vast majority of homeowners (84%) use professional installers for at least part of their outdoor kitchen installation. 64% of homeowners used a designer, 41% used a landscape or garden architect/specialist, while 10% used an architect. Take a cue, and consider working with an expert from the get-go. A kitchen addition involves many moving parts. Add the outdoor element to an already complicated renovation and you can be sure that there will be lots to think about, from functionality and durability to style.

Organic materials are great for outdoor applications, blurring the line between man and nature. But does stone weigh heavily on your mind and budget? Stone veneer is a more economical solution with the same earthy edge; a great finishing option for feature walls, fireplaces and water features. TO KEEP YOUR STONE PAVERS WEED FREE, HERE ARE SOME EASY AND EFFECTIVE ORGANIC TECHNIQUES. 1 / CLOVE OIL MIXTURE A mixture of vinegar and clove oil is very effective in removing weeds. To prepare, take a container of 5 litre capacity, and mix 600 ml clove oil with 2.5 litre of 20% strong vinegar. Fill the rest of the container with clean water. Mix the solution so that it becomes homogenous. To use, take around 1 litre of solution in a garden sprayer and spray at the roots of the weeds. The strong active elements in the solution burn and kill the weeds. This will ensure that your stone driveway is free of weeds for several months.

Before you use the organic solution, conduct a spot test to ensure that the vinegar does not bleach the stone paver. Spray diluted vinegar on an inconspicuous 2’ x 2’ patch on your stone paver. Wait for a few hours and check for any discolouration. If you don’t see any difference on the paver, you can do ahead with the treatment.

Sprinkle the salt of calcium chloride granules on the soil where weeds grow. Once done, spray water on the pellets using a garden sprayer and avoid flooding the area. You need to repeat spraying water on three consecutive days if the weather is very dry and on three alternate days if the humidity is high.

imple MARINADED SCUCUMBER SALAD Cucumber salad gets better as it sits. Make this several hours ahead of time and leave it at room temperature. It will last several days in the fridge. I love serving this with grilled meat, chicken, fish or burgers. The flavours are super simple and go with just about everything!

• 1 English cucumber

STEP ONE: Using a knife, slicer on a food processor or mandolin, slice the cucumber into 3mm slices. Place slices in a medium-size mixing bowl.

• 1/4 cup rice vinegar • 1 tsp sesame oil • 1 tsp honey or sugar • 1/2 tsp kosher salt • 1 tbsp toasted black and white sesame seeds

STEP T WO: Drizzle the vinegar and oil over the cucumbers, sprinkle with the honey and salt, mix and toss together very well. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, toss.

STEP THREE: Let marinate at room temp for about 30 minutes or longer before serving.

Toss again before serving. ◆
