LAUNDRY ROOM A GREAT LAUNDRY ROOM SHOULD BE A SMARTLY DESIGNED SPACE THAT LETS YOU GET LAUNDRY DONE HASSLE-FREE. While it would be ideal to have unlimited square footage to work with, sometimes you just have to get creative with your current space. By following a few easy and clever tips, you can make your laundry room both an aesthetically pleasing and functional space. Keep reading to find out how to make your laundry room work for you. MAKE USE OF VERTICAL SPACE WITH A STACK ABLE L AUNDRY SET-UP Is your laundry room smaller? You can still get a lot done in it with a stacked laundry set-up. Not only do they save plenty of space, they’re also more energy efficient. When installing, keep in mind to alway stack your dryer on top as they’re lighter. Washing machines are heavy, and when they’re filled with water, they tend to vibrate more and could create a hazard. If searching for a larger design, the LG wash tower has innovation that allows you to reach the console without using a step stool. You can also look for 24” luxury washer and dryer models to accommodate smaller spaces. INSTALL A HANGING ROD TO DRY YOUR CLOTHES Drying racks are practical, but they can get in the way and take up floor space. To maximize the space in your

6

laundry room, consider installing a rod to hang and dry clothes. The rod can be suspended from your ceiling or installed between two cabinets. This practical addition makes use of unused space without being obstructive. While consumers could go with drying racks or rods, it’s worthwhile to note that many newer appliances have settings that accommodate delicate materials. KEEP EVERY THING IN ONE PL ACE WITH A STOR AGE PEG WALL Even when you try to be as organized as possible, sometimes items still get shuffled around in your laundry room. A storage peg wall solves that problem – you can keep appliances and essentials neatly organized on a peg wall. By placing storage baskets on the peg wall, commonly used items like clothes pins and wool dryer balls are always easily accessible.

MA XIMIZE THE SPACE BET WEEN YOUR LUXURY WASHER AND DRYER A slim pull-out storage cart that fits in between your luxury washer and dryer can store more than you might think. These types of carts usually have at least three tiers of shelves so you can store frequently used items like detergent, soap and cleaning supplies no problem. Look for a cart that has wheels so that you can pull it out easily and push it back in place when it’s not in use. Since they’re slim and portable, these carts can also be placed elsewhere in your laundry room if you ever decide to change the layout. ELIMINATE VISUAL CLUT TER If you’re not a fan of having plastic jugs of laundry detergent scattered about, then using glass dispensers could be a great option. With glass dispensers, you can label them and immediately see when you need to refill them. They also look more polished and can fit into just about any laundry room design. If you’re using liquid detergent, be sure to dilute it a little bit so that it flows properly through the spigot. There are also laundry appliances that have soap dispensers built in internally, so this would help avoid messy bottles. KEEP YOUR ESSENTIALS WITHIN ARM’S REACH With an over-the-door storage organizer, everything you need is always within reach. This tip is especially useful for smaller laundry rooms. These organizers may have several individual pockets or a few large pockets. There’s no need to worry about hardware or installation – all you have to do is hang it over your door.

A thoughtfully designed laundry room lets you get chores done comfortably and efficiently. Adding the right elements– like extra storage or organization options – keep this space tidy and easy to navigate at all times. Take a look at our selection of washers and dryers at appliancecanada.com to get started on designing your ideal laundry room. ◆ appliancecanada.com

FINANCIAL

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN MONEY & LIFE Article by Domenic Amodeo | Insurance Broker

THERE IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION THAT LIFE AND MONEY ARE TWO SEPARATE THINGS: THAT WE HAVE A LIFE ON ONE HAND, AND WE HAVE OUR FINANCES ON THE OTHER. THE REALITY IS THAT WE ONLY HAVE LIFE, AND THAT WE USE MONEY TO HELP SUPPORT IT. IT SEEMS LIKE A SMALL DISTINCTION, BUT IT IS A VERY IMPORTANT ONE TO UNDERSTAND WHEN CREATING A FINANCIAL PLAN.

WHY FINANCIAL PLANNING MATTERS Many people look at financial planning as the mature and responsible thing to do. Generally, everyone agrees that they should have things such as life insurance, retirement accounts and a budget. However, we often forget why these things are important and figuring it out starts with asking yourself why they matter to you. As you read this article looking to understand the basics of financial literacy, ask yourself, why is financial planning important to you? It isn’t a trick question and there is no right answer. The reason financial planning may be important to you could be different than why it is important to someone else. Perhaps you are looking to start a business? Is it to travel often? Maybe you want to spend more quality time with your family? Is it to retire early?

8

Why is this important to know? Because more often than not, people do not follow through with their financial plan. People delay getting a will, they don’t follow through with their budget, and they don’t save diligently. This isn’t because they lack discipline - it’s because there is a lack of clarity on “why” they’re doing it in the first place! Meanwhile, this clarity can act as the bridge between life and money and a desire to make it happen. Recently, I had a client who had a hard time saving. He wanted to save, but he would always end up splurging on entertainment and shopping. He was frustrated because he felt like he wasn’t getting anywhere financially, even though he was a decade into the workforce. After sitting down with him to get a clearer idea of his “why” when it came to saving, he felt like he was falling behind in his saving as most of his friends were settling down,

getting married and having children. I asked him, “Let’s assume your friends are in the same financial position as you. What do you want to save towards?” From there, we uncovered his desire to take a year off to travel internationally and explore the world. Together, we worked to find a number he wanted to set aside for that trip, set up an emergency fund, protect his income, set up a savings plan, and considered other financial areas. His new financial plan now has him going on the trip of a lifetime in two years. Not to my surprise, he had no problem following through with his savings plan from then on and it wasn’t because he had this newfound discipline and willpower to save. No, what he needed all along was to create a financial plan that genuinely excited him. Life events and transitions extend beyond marriage, home ownership and retirement. However, many people (even financial planners!) can sometimes assume that this is all there is to life. But what about everything else you want to experience? Like it or not, most of those things will cost money, too. Knowing that, wouldn’t it be important to consider those things in your financial plan as well? When we are emotionally connected with our financial plan, we follow through with it. We execute on our plans to make sure we reach our goals. We bridge the gap between money and life and, perhaps most importantly, we find the motivation to get more excited about our lives than ever! ◆ Domenic is Founder/Principal of AMCO Insurance & Financial Services. The last year has put many things into perspective. We have had the time to isolate and spend much more time in our homes causing us to reflect on how we live and use our homes. Indeed, being catapulted into a new lifestyle - particularly when change happens quickly - really makes us question and evaluate the choices we have made.

12

Having a versatile home is more important now than ever. Life has been known to throw us curveballs, and adapting to them is nothing new. Whether it is an adult child who decides to now move back home, or a change in physical abilities as we age, there will always be surprises around every corner. For this reason, our homes need to remain adaptable, flexible and always functional.

BUILDING OR RE-MODELLING A HOME THAT CAN EVOLVE WITH YOU WILL MAXIMIZE YOUR PROPERTY INVESTMENT. AN ADAPTABLE HOME IS NOT ONLY USEFUL FOR THE RESIDENTS WHO CURRENTLY LIVE THERE (YOU!) BUT IT ALSO WORKS WONDERS FOR THE HOME’S RESALE VALUE WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO SELL. START BY THINKING ABOUT HOW YOUR LIFE CAN CHANGE OVER THE NEXT FIVE, 10 OR 15 YEARS, AND HOW YOUR HOME CAN GROW AS YOU DO.

Some of our clients ask us for permanent solutions to very temporary pain points that they experience during relatively short periods of their lives. A great example is young children. We often design spaces for families, and given that we also have families of our own, we understand the evolution of a growing child and the different stages that your home needs to cater to. The key is finding the right balance between what works now for your family and what will also still work for your family down the road.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPARE ROOM Whether you’re living in a condo or a five-bedroom home, maximizing your living area is always a smart move. One example is the guest bedroom. Do you host overnight stays often enough to warrant a dedicated room 365 days a year? Rather than giving up prime real estate for a room that will only be used twice a year, consider giving the space a dual purpose such as a home office and guest room, all in one. Bringing multi-function to the room will accommodate both occasional guests while offering year-round use for additional activities such as work, exercise, relaxation, crafts, sleeping or storage. ▹

FORWARD-THINKING BATHROOM Adaptability means looking ahead to the future and anticipating the household’s needs. For those who are reaching their retirement years and plan to age in place, the bathroom is ground zero for adaptation. Some thoughtful changes can bring peace of mind when elderly guests come to visit. Contrary to popular belief, there are many ways to incorporate safety into a bathroom without making it look like something straight from a retirement home. Grab bars can be disguised as sleek towel bars. Instead of doorknobs, install levers. Flooring material can be selected for its non-slip properties and barrier-free walk-in showers are actually aesthetically more pleasing than those with a sill.

DESIGNERS EUGENIA TRIANDOS and KORINA KHAMIS, are both co-founders for Hibou Design & Co. Collectively with well over a decade of experience this Montreal based multi-disciplinary design firm has become known and focused on creating both stylish and well curated interiors. The firm provides complete bespoke residential design services throughout Canada and North America. hiboudesignco.com

CONSIDER INTEGRATED OPTIONS SUCH AS SAFETY FEATURES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS. FOR EXAMPLE, INSTALLING A GRAB BAR HORIZONTALLY INSTEAD OF ON A DIAGONAL IS ONLY FEASIBLE IF THE WALL IS REINFORCED BEFORE IT’S CLOSED. BECAUSE STUDS ARE PLACED 16 INCHES APART, IN ORDER FOR AN 18” OR 24” GRAB BAR TO BE SECURED TO A STUD, IT USUALLY HAS TO BE INSTALLED ON AN ANGLE.

An evolving home is as much about having forethought as it is about creative flair and technical know-how. Working with a professional designer will ensure your needs are being met, both now and into the future. ◆
