Tired of your home interiors? More important than ever, our homes need to provide comfort and function as well as reflect who we are. Accessorizing is a crucial phase of completing a renovation or adding back some life to your home. Rugs, artwork, collectibles and pillows are some of the key elements that will bring your beautifully finished spaces back to life.
HERE ARE SOME OF MY TIPS ON HOW TO SELECT THE BEST ACCESSORIES TO STYLE UP AND REFRESH YOUR INTERIORS THIS WINTER. COLOUR A monochromatic space will lack personality so incorporate muted tones that work together or choose two bolder colours and distribute them across your space with accessories. Place these colours in varying accents like pillows, blankets, vases and artwork. Ideally, draw these colours from a key piece in the space which could be an accent fabric, area rug or artwork.
SCALE When selecting accents, ensure you use varying sizes. Groupings are most successful when combining three different heights, widths of objects together. If you want to make a statement, add one or two large items to your space that will draw attention to them. A large painting on canvas would make an impact on a large wall. Pull out some of the colours in that painting for your accessories to distribute in the room.
TEXTURE Add depth and dimension to your space by combining various textures. Keeping in your colour scheme, combine items that are rough, polished, woven and silky. This adds interest without the need to add a lot of colour.
CONTR AST Create a dynamic space by adding contrast. The key to create contrast is selecting a few key pieces that stand out against the neutral backdrop of the rest of the space. The clients came to Two Birds Design with a disjointed kitchen and oddly placed, over-sized powder room, looking for guidance on enlarging the kitchen and creating better flow from room to room. Like many of their clients, they weren’t sure how long they would be staying in this home so a consideration for resale and appealing to the masses was key. However, they still wanted to have some fun and infuse colour and whimsy into the space.

Two Birds Design opted to keep the flooring, cabinets and counter-tops (all the big ticket items) in classic neutral tones and had fun with items that are easier changed out later like lighting, furniture and accessories. Their assortment of worldly treasures and collections of quirky dishware and tea-pots, paired with the custom-made brass light fixtures and tapestry-like tiled backsplash, gives the kitchen and dining area a sense of playfulness amidst the otherwise conventional white and navy cabinetry. â–š

Two Birds Design continued the fun in the principle bathroom where they stuck with a classic black and white scheme but opted for a bold geometric mirror and brass fixtures. Making use of every inch, they created recessed shelving in the custom shower and vanity area that provides more opportunity to display collectibles as well as storage for everyday bathroom items.
THE END RESULT WAS AN ECLECTIC HOME THAT REFLECTS THE UNIQUE CHARM OF THE CURRENT HOMEOWNERS WHILE MAINTAINING A CLASSIC AESTHETIC THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME.

Chocolate WITH CHOCOLATE CHUNKS AND HAZELNUTS Makes Approx 40 Biscotti.
INGREDIENTS • 6 tbsp unsalted butter (2/3 stick), softened to a little cooler than room temperature • 6 tbsp vegetable oil • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 3 eggs • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 1/2 cups flour • 1/2 cup cocoa (preferably Valrhona or another premium cocoa) • 1 3/4 tsp baking powder • 1/4 tsp salt • 1 cup chocolate chunks, I like milk chocolate, good quality • 3/4 cup nuts, I like pecans or toasted and skinned hazelnuts, pecans are good too!

DIRECTIONS STEP ONE: Preheat oven to 350°F. If you have 2 ovens, use both. If you have one oven you will need to switch the trays halfway through the cooking time. STEP T WO: In a medium size bowl, mix together (I use a whisk), the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt, set aside. STEP THREE: With the whisk attachment of your electric mixer, cream the butter, add oil, and add sugars. Make sure you scrape down the sides so that everything mixes together. STEP FOUR: Add eggs one at a time, add vanilla. STEP FIVE: Switch to the paddle on your electric mixer. Add in 2
or 3 stages the flour mixture to the butter mixture, slowly. Do not over-mix. STEP SIX: Add nuts and chocolate, Do not over-mix. STEP SEVEN: Split the dough in half. Form 2 logs across the length of 2 baking sheets (1 log on each sheet), you can do this on the diagonal also. STEP EIGHT: Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven (leave the oven on). Let cool on the baking sheets for about 15-20 minutes. Transfer the logs carefully to a cutting board. Slice, on a diagonal, 1/2-3/4 slices. Place each piece back on the baking sheet lying on their sides. Dry the biscotti out in the oven for 15 minutes (less time if you like then chewier). ◆
