Montreal’s burgeoning ’70’s scene included a ‘no holds barred’ approach to glam, punk, blues, prog, metal, country, jazz and folk. There was no better musical place to be in the ’70’s- and this was the backdrop that nurtured one of the pioneers of female fronted rock - Sass Jordan, the Queen of Canadian Rock. The Juno award winner has sold over a million records world wide and continues to entertain audiences around the world with her earthy vocals and powerful lyrics. We sat down with Sass to discuss her storied career, her time as a Canadian Idol judge and her wine - Kick Ass Sass. 10

a: I had many, but I’d have to say Bowie, The Stones and Jethro Tull. I would say that I was highly impressed by anyone who could affect me on an emotional level.

What was that ti m e li ke fo r yo u an d h ow d i d it h e lp yo u g r ow as an arti st? a: That time was defined by a laser like focus on my part, I knew what I wanted to do, (write, perform, and record music) and I pretty much focused on that to the exclusion of most other things. Growth as an artist (or anything, for that matter) is produced by gaining the skills needed to be able to express through art form with ease and a certain level of finesse.
q : What was yo u r fi r st b i g b r e ak that h e lpe d yo u l an d a r eco r d d e al? a: My first big break came through the Universe, when it downloaded into my awareness what I wanted to do. From that moment on, because I focused on nothing else, situations, people, circumstances and events transpired to support my goal!

I was becoming less and less enamoured of the demands on me physically, mentally and emotionally and I was questioning whether or not I wanted to continue. q : Te ll u s ab o ut yo u r ti m e as a Canad ian I d o l j u d g e? What was that e xpe r i e n ce li ke? a: It was an enormous amount of fun and hard work. The cast and crew were a team, and we traveled all over the country, meeting a vast array of characters and some very talented people. It was interesting because you realize that being a public performer who is successful enough to make a living at it is not as straightforward as just having ‘talent’. It requires a great deal more such as stamina, desire, focus, self-confidence, and the urge to serve as a facilitator for other people’s upliftment and enjoyment.
q : Yo u ’ ve b e e n calle d th e q u e e n o f Canad ian R o ck? What d o e s that m e an to yo u? a: It means that something I said as a joke got taken seriously enough that now I get called that quite often, I think it’s hilarious! I think I’m going to switch it up to ‘Empress of Rock’.

I learned that Janis and myself had almost nothing in common, other than an astrological sign and vocational choice.

I love wine, and I just thought it would be amazing to have a wine that I could share with family, friends and fans, something else we could all celebrate with together. Music is a celebration of life to me, and wine goes along with that philosophy perfectly. It’s going fantastically well, and I will continue doing it as long as I can.
q : Yo u co nti n u e to pe r fo r m ar o u n d th e wo r ld. Wh e r e ar e yo u r favo u r ite s p ots to p e r fo r m an d why a: My favourite spots to perform are anywhere that people really get into
the show and the music. When you are touring, you don’t really get to enjoy the culture that much, as you are too busy traveling from one show to the next and taking care of your physical self. It’s a very demanding job, but I chose it, and I like it.

I n what ways d o e s that h e lp an d/o r h u rt th e arti st? a: They can, but the challenge nowadays is getting anyone to care enough to pay attention. I think that dingy bars and clubs were a great way to learn performance skills that you cannot learn any other way. To be honest, both formats, the old and the new, had their pros and cons. RED
July 1st marked the 16th anniversary of Paint The Town Red and what a day for a parade, with beautiful blue skies being the perfect backdrop for the sea of red and white that lined the street. The Hazel McCallion Canada Day Parade featured more than 70 participants; colourful floats, community groups, corporations, bands, and a few celebrity personnel that were enjoyed by tens of thousands of spectators.

The Port Credit Legion hosted a Family BBQ, where there were stages set up with live music featuring amazing local talent. In Memorial Park, there was a Vendor Village to do a little shopping and a KidsZone with many activities, shows, inflatables, face painting and crafts as well as the incredible Aerial Dance Cirque show. The Main Stage featured local musicians, Canadian artists and tribute bands all day and evening that ended with a phenomenal 25 minute fireworks display, lighting up the Port Credit skies.

What does it take to be a champion? For 15-yearold men’s artistic gymnast, Jayson Rampersad, it starts at home. “My family has been very supportive throughout my career. Without them I wouldn’t be able to get to practice. They’re my personal chauffeurs. I feel very confident knowing that I have their support to back me on my journey.” Born and raised in Oakville, Jayson found his love for gymnastics at the young age of 4. His coach at the time saw potential and soon encouraged his parents to have him train in the competitive program. Jayson fell in love with gymnastics because of the opportunity to always learn new skills and combinations, which he still enjoys to this day. Over the years, Jayson has had the privilege to train with great athletes and coaches, including coach Greg Jackson, to whom Jayson credits much of his success for providing the guidance and foundation it takes to become an elite gymnast. His current coach, Frank Szabo Jr. has been instrumental in his push to being named to
the Canadian National Team. Reminding Jayson to stay focused on his own career and goals, Coach Frank often tells him, “Only focus on you because you can only control yourself and not what others do.” Jayson explains, “I find that mentality helps keep me motivated because I’m not comparing myself to people that have had more years of experience then me. It helps to keep me centered on my goal of improving myself.” Since he began competing, Jayson has chalked up several awards including winning gold on the pommel horse at the 2019 Canadian National Championships. This July, Jayson will be competing in the 2019 Elite Canada Men’s Artistic Gymnastics competition looking to win yet another gold and continue to represent Canada. On May 11th, Peel Regional Police raised $14,000 for Peel Children’s Centre at their 6th Annual Mother’s Day Brunch. Since its inception in 2014, this event has raised more than $59,000 for Peel Children’s Center's free and confidential mental health services for children, youth and families. Highlights from the event included a delicious buffet brunch, silent auction, and musical entertainment. Guests shopped with several local vendors and took home keepsake photos from the complimentary photo booth. A mother who recently completed the Circle of Security® program with her three-year-old son shared her story with guests to illustrate the positive impact PCC’s high quality services have had on her family.

Waterdown's 10th Oh Canada Ribfest, held in Memorial Park on Canada Day weekend, was another huge success! Apart from days of continuous sunshine, there was something for everyone; tons of award-winning ribs and other great food, live music and dancers, Disney princess meet-and-greets, and a vendors' marketplace. Many people wandered over to the Magical Midway after their ribs, to enjoy the Scrambler and other rides and games. The weekend ended in a big bang with an impressive fireworks display. 1. Toronto Craft Beer Festival, the city’s largest celebration of independent craft brewers returned to Ontario Place June 21st-23rd. With over 28 craft brewers and an additional 5,000 sqft of space, the festival was bigger and better than ever before. Featuring a wide variety of finely made craft beers and ciders, as well as delicious food, fun activities, and live music, the event had something to keep everyone entertained.

Garden Soirée It was a warm and beautiful evening at The Riverwood Conservancy, MacEwan Terrace Garden on June 7th. The enchanted evening under the stars saw guests enjoy amazing gourmet foods from some of Mississauga's top restaurants, sip signature cocktails and bid on incredible items at the live and silent auctions. Singer Michael Ciufo serenaded the crowd with his beautiful voice, then Tatervox took to the stage and had everyone up dancing the night away. Proceeds went to support The Riverwood Conservancy’s Essential Environmental programs, which serve students, adults, and individuals with special needs throughout our community.

Just after the release of his Countrywide Soul album, Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo fame, teamed up with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in RBG's Hendrie Park for an unforgettable performance. It was a stupendous kickoff show for RBG's Garden Music series. Opening the show, Kevin Fox, a revered recording artist was comically endearing when he admitted to a mistake during his performance nobody had even noticed. There was plenty of free family fun at the Party on Plains, evening of June 27th. Visitors grooved to music, lawn games, magic tricks, fun-foam covered sidewalks, and free mini sandwiches, courtesy of Mr Sub. Daffy Dilly the clown made balloon animals and Pluckers, offering lots of specials, filled their outdoor patio. There were three main party locations from the Stillwater Float plaza down to Pluckers plaza and continuing to the new Home Hardware, where vintage cars gathered in the parking lot and Luke and Kurt strummed their guitars. 1. Northern Night, the fashion show held by Maya Charbin at the Harding Waterfront Estate to showcase the Spring/Summer 2019 collection under her namesake brand was a huge success. Brimming with positive energy, the show, which was a celebration of the powerful and confident woman, was almost like a gala, with guests getting a chance to mingle with each other over drinks and snacks. Being sponsored by the likes of AUDI Mississauga, the runway show was attended by the mayor of Mississauga, Bonnie Crombie and Miss Universe Canada 2018, Marta Magdalena Stepien started and closed out the show. The collection, which started with shows of delicate silhouettes in happy summer colours like pastel peaches and greens with a pop of hot pink and beautiful rainbow coloured fabrics, was followed by a sneak peek of the Fall Winter pieces in black and electric blue. What you can expect to see in her designs is Maya’s love for asymmetric hemlines that flow so seamlessly with classic styles, adding just enough drama to the look. You will also see reversible tops and jackets, made in luxe fabrics that will revamp your look instantly, or full length skirts with peplums that can be removed there and then to reveal shorts or a mini skirt. The show goers were also able to shop Maya’s bestselling pieces and order the new collection at the pop up shop at the venue. If this isn’t the definition of the perfect way to celebrate a lovely new collection, we don’t know what is.

ANNUAL Fishing Derby The Port Credit Salmon and Trout Association held their annual Fishing Derby on June 22nd with all boats meeting at the Lakefront Promenade Park Ramp at 6:00 a.m. for a shotgun start. This friendly competition drew many local fishermen as well as a group that came from as far away as Thunder Bay to compete for the coveted title of catching the biggest fish that comes with bragging rights. PANCAKE BREAKFAST MP Pam Damoff and Oakville Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll hosted a free Pancake Breakfast and Citizenship Reaffirmation Ceremony on Canada Day at Oak Park Neighbourhood Centre. The morning featured a delicious pancake breakfast, Canadathemed crafts and face painting for kids. Everyone was excited to reaffirm their citizenship on a picture perfect Canada Day. The 16th Annual Mississauga Dragon Boat Festival was held on June 9th at the mouth of the Credit River in Port Credit. It was arranged by Mississauga Canoe Club, a non-for-profit organization that has served the city of Mississauga for 61 years. The club has provided a wide range of year-round programs for the Mississauga community and has produced many world class and Olympic athletes. The Festival was an awesome way to kick off summer festivities and was hugely attended by different teams of colleges, universities and organizations. This year, 46 teams participated , which included a mixed crew race division (men & women) as well as only women divisions.

Each month since March, the Aldershot Lions Club has held a giant garage sale indoors at 484 Plains East, next to the Bingo Connection. The sale is held in 2 units, one for furniture and large items and the other sells miscellaneous dishes and knickknacks. Proceeds are put right back into the community by helping organizations such as Girl Guides or the Compassion Society. The Lions Club welcomes donations of household items. Blueheel’s Showcase There is magic in Disney. That feeling of happy excitement, imagination and incredible possibilities that appeals to all kids and even bigger kids. On June 22nd at The Westway Club, Blueheel presented Disney: The Showcase. It was a wonderful evening of performances by students and their hardworking instructors followed by dinner and dance. It was a magical evening as the dancers let the music and magic of Disney inspire their imagination and dance.

Interim Place's third annual Purple Tie Luncheon was held on June 9th at the Credit Valley Gold and Country Club. Attendees of the Purple Tie Luncheon enjoyed delectable cuisine, networking, entertainment, and an inspiring keynote presentation by acclaimed speaker Jeff Perera. The luncheon helped raise awareness about the important role men play in ending violence against women and girls. Attendees also explored some of the ways male allies can support the work to end violence against women and help raise funds that enable Interim Place to continue leading the change in region-wide responses to the crisis of gender-based violence.

Modern digital photography makes it easy to take multiple shots of the same subject without added cost. There are several reasons to always take several photos if possible. First, one of the photos may be out of focus or you may have cut off an important element. Second, especially with more than one person in the photo, someone may have closed eyes, be looking elsewhere or be unflattering in some other way. For example, in p h oto 1 one brother has closed eyes and in ph oto 2 the other has downcast eyes. In p h oto 3 , both have their eyes open and engaged with the camera. That one was selected for the cover! Third, you may wish to take multiple shots to include more or less background, with a view to editing later. Fourth, especially with action photography, you will have an opportunity to select the best image. ph oto s 4 and 5 were taken exactly 1 second apart. Finally, once you have selected the best image to work with, DELETE the rest. It will make it easier to find your best photo in your collection and will not waste the storage memory of your smartphone or computer.

This fun and unique Outdoor Ball Hockey Tournament was held on the weekend of June 22nd and 23rd in the middle of the retail plaza in support of ROCK, which is the largest accredited children’s mental health centre in the Region of Halton. There were many kid’s teams as well as adults competing for the coveted Stanley Cup. Everyone received a t-shirt as well as a delicious BBQ lunch. Walter Gretzky was signing autographs and posing for photos. It was a perfect sunny weekend to have fun and support a great cause. ROCK’s mission statement is “Working together to promote and achieve optimal health in kids and families.”

On June 15th, CARSTAR Mississauga hosted the Soaps It Up car wash to raise awareness and donations for the fight against cystic fibrosis. Residents who stopped by could make an optional donation to the cause while also getting their car washed and enjoying a delicious BBQ. The Soaps It Up event is part of CARSTAR’s annual Shine Month, which consists of cystic fibrosis fundraising events across North America throughout the month of June. To date, CARSTAR has raised over $3.7 million for cystic fibrosis-related charities and initiatives.

Killarney’s observatory Did you know Killarney is one of only two provincial parks with an observatory? The park observatory, which hosts a variety of astronomy programs throughout the summer, recently got an upgrade! by o n ta r i o Pa r ks / o n ta r i o pa r ks .co m

In spring of 2018, the observatory in Killarney Provincial Park was upgraded to feature a new research-grade 16” telescope capable of full computer and smartphone control, an attached 5” refractor for outstanding astro-photography. The original telescope is a Mease Cassegrain design with a manual mount. This makes it easy for beginners to get the hang of moving the telescope toward objects without worrying about confusing electronics. In a park not too far away… Killarney’s summer astronomy programs include drop-in nights with guest astronomers, as well as formal presentations and planet walks. Join an astronomer-in-residence every Tuesday night at the park observatory for a chance to get a close-up view of Jupiter, Saturn, and some of the most obscure celestial bodies in the night sky! Self-use program (summer only) As of 2017, Killarney has offered a selfuse program for the observatory. This was created to allow anyone with an interest in astronomy to explore the night sky using a telescope. Never touched a telescope before? No problem. The program was designed with all experience levels in mind. Families or individuals can sign out the observatory for themselves, and spend an evening exploring the night sky.
How it works Guests are asked to come to the gate house between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm to sign out the observatory for the evening. Sign-out is on a first come-first serve basis. Observatory use requires a deposit of $500. The gate house will have a schedule for when staff are available to do observatory orientations. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll head to the site with a staff member (who will provide instruction on how to use the observatory, including the dome and the telescope). Once it’s dark, gather at the observatory, and spend the night looking at planets, the moon, double stars, galaxies and more! We ask stargazers to: • Fill out the log book with your observations • Return the key by 10:00 am the next day (and retrieve your deposit) • Complete a questionnaire letting us know how your night went This is an amazing opportunity for everyone to learn about what is in our night sky, and spend a great evening stargazing in Killarney Provincial Park. •

The annual Mandarin MS Walk took place on May 26th at Mississauga Valley Park. My husband, Michael Marianetti was diagnosed with secondary progressive Multiple Sclerosis just after we got engaged in 1998. He was 24 years old. We have 3 beautiful children, Mikeila, Noah and Tatiana. Our oldest daughter Mikeila first introduced us to the MS walk about 4 years ago. The tradition continued thanks to our cousin and team leader, Jazmine Sangalang who has since helped organize Michael's Mission team to join the walk every year. Michael's team, along with thousands of other participants from around the country who do the walk annually are on a mission to finding a cure. According to the MS society of Canada, our country has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, with an estimated 77,000 Canadians living with the disease. While it is most often diagnosed in young adults aged 20 to 49, younger children and older adults are also diagnosed with the disease. Craft Sale Roncesvalles United Church was abuzz with activity as the spring weather was finally upon us on May 11th. The Horticultural Societies of Parkdale & Toronto held their annual Plant Fair just in time for Mother’s Day. There were many plants to choose from including pollinators, natives, perennials and annuals, houseplants, herbs and vegetables and some hard to get plants all at the best prices in town. Shoppers could also purchase arts and crafts from local artisans, praying mantis eggs for you to hatch at home and bee nests for solitary gentle, pollinator bees. Best of all there was free advice on plants, soil, eco-friendly gardening and tree care. All proceeds went back into the community to nurture all sorts of greening initiatives, community garden projects and horticultural education outreach.

Once again, this year Access 2 Accessibility partnered with Microsoft Store Square One to present VIP GAAD Breakfast Event, the only GAAD event held in Mississauga. GAAD is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a day to raise awareness of accessibility in technology. This was the 8th year for GAAD with events happening all over the world and more countries are added every year. Access 2 Accessibility (A2A) Founder, Carol-Ann Chafe, discussed programs they are bringing to the community as resources for people with disabilities. Members from A2A's first program, Entrepreneurs & Professionals, with Disabilities; inspired attendees as they spoke about their successes and how they focus on their Abilities not (dis)abilities in their career endeavours. 50

Burlington's downtown came alive with the 40th Sound of Music festival from June 8th-16th. The annual Streetfest, carnival rides, vendors, Grand Festival parade and free concerts drew crowds from far and wide. The Brant Street restaurants built little patio areas so patrons could dine al fresco and not miss any action. There was continuous music from multiple bands, like the Matthew Good Band and there was dancing in the streets. Oakville’s Belly Up featured belly dancing demos on Brant Street. Artists painted, youngsters hoola hooped, and car buffs viewed a display of vintage vehicles. Multiple activities kept everyone well entertained. This waterfront festival continues to grow year after year, bringing people together and creating lasting memories. 1. What an amazing evening as over 350 guests enjoyed a picture perfect evening in the backyard of Councillor Ron Starr’s amazing family home. The theme for the 15th Annual Starr’s on the Credit was ‘50’s Glamping with the Starr’s. The perimeter was lined with some of Mississauga’s finest restaurants who served some of their amazing signature dishes as well as an incredible silent auction. The Music was provided by Mississauga's own “The Dreamboats,” 2019 winner of the Best Group Marty Award who had everyone up on the dance floor. This fundraising event raised over $200,000, which was dedicated to educating and inspiring industry leading professionals and key influencers in Peel Region to stand tall and be bold for vulnerable children and youth involved with Peel Children’s Aid Foundation.

Lakeshore Corridor
COMMUNITY TEAM By L a k e s h o r e Co r r i d o r Co m m u n i t y T e a m
Lakeshore Corridor Community Team (LCCT) was established in 1999 to provide acts of kindness in the community south of the QEW, between Clarkson and Lakeview. LCCT has evolved but maintains the original objective of building community by connecting people who have with those in need. LCCT is a registered charity and is overseen by a volunteer board of eight directors. In addition To Random Acts of Kindness, LCCT has in recent years established a strong collaboration with The Compass Food Bank and Outreach Centre. We strive to augment the Compass core activities with unique and standalone initiatives. In 2018 LCCT established the “Jim Tovey Kids to Camp” program funding 80 “kids weeks” of summer camp for children in the Compass community. We also collaborated with the compass for our 6th annual “Gift of Christmas “ party hosting 80 children and their families for an afternoon of fun with Santa and his elves. Everyone shared
a great meal, had photos taken with Santa, received awesome gifts, played games, sang, made crafts and generally had fun time. We supported various initiatives like “The Shoebox Project’, the diaper drive, the BITE4Christmas and individual request. All of our activities are 100% volunteer run, thereby meeting one of LCCT’S objectives of fostering connections between those who have with those in need to make Lakeshore Corridor a better place for all. LCCT is thankful to the growing legion of volunteers who appreciate the opportunity to pay-itforward and the camaraderie enjoyed at our events. It is a great way to meet likeminded people and contribute to the wonderful community that is the Lakeshore Corridor. LCCT’s fundraising initiatives includes our popular fun “Paddle for the People “ sponsored by Waterside Inn and hosted by the Port Credit Royal Canadian Legion 82., and usually held on the 4th Saturday in August. This year’s event will be held on August 24th. Entry fee is
$299 a team, which includes lunch and a steak dinner, as well as tax receipt. It’s a fun family day on the banks of the Credit River with over 30 teams from local businesses. The always generous and big supporter of LCCT, Paul Hainer of Insuranceland surprised LCCT with $1000. These funds will be going to Jim Tovey Kids to Camp for 2019! Boaters at Lasalle Park Marina were excited to launch a new boating season in May with sailboats and yachts tied to their slips. Perfect weather brought owners out to do some lastminute maintenance and preparations on their vessels before summer’s aquatic activity began on Lake Ontario. Anglers also took advantage of the sunshine and the tranquil, beautiful spot to try their fishing luck. Somewhere hoping to lure in bass, like John who has been fishing in this same spot for 61 years. Celebrating its 23rd year, The Mississauga Waterfront Festival took place over the course of a 3-day weekend from June 15th-17th at Port Credit Memorial Park. A little rain did not stop people from attending and enjoying the live outdoor concerts, family activities, food and entertainment. The festival is recognized as Mississauga’s Signature Family and Friends event and has achieved a ranking as one of the Top 100 Festivals in Ontario for the past 13 years. The MWF partners with local charitable and not-for-profit organizations and provides donations that help these organizations with their outreach programs. These organizations include: Lions Club, Scouts, Civitans, St. John Ambulance, Chinese Arts Organization, Community Living, Peel Family Services, Mississauga Heritage, and Mississauga Canoe Club. Through the Sponsor a Child Program, the MWF also invites some 6,000 less fortunate families to attend the Festival as guests. These special guests are provided with a free meal, carnival rides, as well as enjoying the array of performers and have a weekend of fun. For some this experience is the highlight of their summer.

Peace Garden Celebration

On May 17th, Roncesvalles Village BIA and the Friends of Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden accepted an Award of Excellence for Public Space Improvements from the International Downtown Association (IDA) for the Dundas Roncesvalles Peace Garden (DRPG). This was the only project given an Award of Excellence for improvements to public space, from the IDA in Canada for 2018. Part of the event involved a representative from the Mississauga’s on the Credit, where they exchanged sacred tobacco seeds, and planted this year's featured indigenous plant, which was sage. A class of grade 7 students who participated in the annual Tulips for Peace program attend to see the beauty of the tulips they planted last fall.

You may recognize this man. He’s from Toronto and has been active since he was a child. He eats pasta before a run but doesn’t listen to music because it throws him off his workout. He likes to go to bed early before a race and go for a walk to keep his mind in shape. Oh. He also runs with a golf bag slung over his back. Meet Robert Winckler! Robert will be running in his 5th Nutrience Oakville Half marathon this year. When asked why he chooses to run with his golf clubs, he’ll tell you it was simply something he wanted to try and see if he could do it. He’s mastered the art. He broke a Guinness World Record last year for the fastest half marathon while carrying golf clubs at a time of 1:57:58. He switches up the clubs from race-to-race and has contingency plans for any golf club-related emergencies that could occur during his run.
His record-breaking run with his golf clubs required lots of preparation.
“Robert ran 585 km to get his mind and body used to carrying the 21lb golf club bag.” He also ran four races with the clubs prior to his record-breaking run to work out any issues he may confront. Running with golf clubs isn’t the only record Robert holds. He’s also earned the record for fastest half marathon dressed as a cowboy and the fastest half marathon dressed as a swimmer (male). This year, he hopes to break the record for the fastest half marathon dressed as a fisherman. “[The Nutrience Oakville Half] is a great race to set new PBs. The spectators and
volunteers along the route are amazing. The post-party entertainment is fantastic every year,” says Winckler. This year Robert is looking forward to the new route and starting area at Shell Park, in addition to running in his fisherman costume. We want to congratulate Robert on completing his 60th marathon at the Mississauga Marathon and for completing his 40th half marathon in May 2019. Councillor Karen Ras hosted Ward 2 Family Fun Day on May 11th at the Clarkson Community Centre. This unique challenge called on participants to raise money in exchange for a once-in-a-lifetime experience to rappel down the edge of Toronto City Hall. Aldershot BIA held their first pop up market of the summer on June 22nd in the former Home Hardware location. Many local vendors gathered under white tents in the sun-drenched parking lot and shoppers browsed their products while listening to background music. A few of the vendors included Basketful Boutique, West Avenue Cider House, Stillwater Float, and many more. A special art exhibit was on display at Pixie Blue Studio on June 22nd. The studio hosts regular art classes with a group from Community Living Mississauga and it certainly was impressive to see a year’s worth of work curated and hanging on the studio walls. The class is guided by Meena Chopra, artist and poet. She believes that “the energy and sensitivity of the special needs student is remarkable; their artwork comes from the heart.” The reward comes when a work of art is finished and we get to see eyes light up, it’s a real boost to their self-esteem. 2

Family Fun Fair
Family Fun Fair was a family friendly fundraiser event that was held in Victoria Park in downtown Milton on June 22nd. The park was filled with things to do and see such as the popular Paddle Boats and bouncy castles. There was a kid's zone with many interactive as well as sensory activities, story time and singing with Belle, food trucks and la marketplace with local vendors and artisans. The 2019 Family Fun Fair was in support of MCRC's Playscape Redesign Project. It was a wonderful day to spend in the park with all the family. A portion of the proceeds generated from this event will support unrestricted funds at Toronto Sick Kids Foundation.

Stonehooker Grand Opening in Port Credit By A da m C h e r ry
Stonehooker Brewing Company has launched and has begun her journey into the exciting and growing craft beer world. June 22nd marked the grand opening and over 500 people turned out to enjoy live music, delicious food, a beer list of 11 unique styles and beautiful weather. The crowd was singing along to the high-energy Celtic sea shanties of Eclectic Revival. These guys know how to get a group going with regular “sociables” and familiar tunes. Local dignitaries were there to wish the Captain of the ship, Ross Noel and his crew well on their new venture. Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko, MPP Rudy Cuzzetto and MP Sven Spengemann were all there to wish them well. Barry Gilbert of the Six Nations performed the Smudging Ceremony as an act of cleansing and purifying the space. The evening was capped off with a performance by Mike and the Hookermen, along with special guests and walk-up performances from some very special people. Stonehooking was a trade unique to the north shore of Lake Ontario and was done from the early 1800’s to the early 1900’s between Burlington and Cobourg. Port Credit was a major hub with as many as 30 schooners docked in the harbour at the peak. The crew of the ship would quarry Dundas shale from the lake, 30 tonnes at a time, and sail it into Toronto where it would be used to build homes, roads and sidewalks. The Enbridge速 Ride to Conquer Cancer速 is a unique, two-day cycling event that took place on June 8th-9th, journeying over 200 kilometres through Ontario. The Ride is a bold endeavour to Conquer Cancer In Our Lifetime. The money raised for The Enbridge速 Ride to Conquer Cancer速 benefits Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. Funds raised supported Personalized Cancer Medicine, including research, treatment advances, education and new standards of care at The Princess Margaret, across Ontario, and around the world. Drawing 4,573 Riders in Ontario, this event has raised $19.2 million.

PICNIC
Mississauga celebrated Pride Month in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots with a Pride Picnic at the Unitarian Congregation, who donated the space to the alliance as a "safe space" for the picnic on June 29th. The event featured lots of activities, speakers and performers as well as many awesome vendors. It was a wonderful day to celebrate, and to be thankful for, but recognizing that work still needs to be done in creating an inclusive society for all LGBTQ2S+ people to be themselves.

Brant street was blocked off on July 6th to host an impressive exhibit of cars. From Classics, exotics, hot rods, to muscle cars, Brant Street merchants saw lots of activity. Some held sidewalk sales, specials and kids’ activities for the large crowd of car enthusiasts in support of the local Lions Club. Small Arms Building Celebrates 75 Years
On May 25th, everyone came together to celebrate the Small Arms Ltd. workers and the local community who supported WWII on the home front. The party’s theme was “back to the 40’s” and attendees got to enjoy a 1940's cafe experience at the Brant Street Café with tea and refreshments. There were re-enactments, big band music, dancing, swing dance lessons, singing and more. The event was a great success.

To Girlie, running is as “commonplace as brushing my teeth.” She has been running marathons for 21 years, completing 56 marathons and 16 ultramarathons, and has amassed souvenirs from every race. Girlie has placed a large emphasis on self-care to accomplish this amazing feat, keeping herself in top shape, both mentally and physically. “I run to how I feel…I run because I truly enjoy it” she says, emphasizing the place running has in her life and everything else in it, making it all “hum”.

Grilled Eggplant Bruschetta This is a perfect pass around summer appetizer. The eggplant rounds are a great replacement for the usual baguette bruschetta. You can grill the eggplant well in advance, they do not need to be served warm. You can make the bruschetta toping several hours ahead, just remember, never refrigerate tomatoes! Put it all together last minute.

• 1 box Cherry Tomatoes, each tomato sliced in 8 tiny pieces, chop 1/4 inch dice • Sea Salt to taste • 1 clove Garlic, chopped finely • 1/2 tsp dried Oregano • 1 Green Onion, white and light green part only, chopped fine • 5-6 Basil Leaves, chopped finely • 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
