BURLINGTON & MILTON DOWNTOWN CAR SHOW BY LESLIE STYLES

wo dates – Two Classic Car Shows. On July 7th, Brant Street was blocked off to host the breath-taking Burlington Downtown Car Show. The exhibit had many lovely cars: classics, exotics, rods, muscle cars & euro tuners all showed off their stunning features. The local merchants held sidewalk sales, specials and kid’s activities for the large crowd of car enthusiasts in support of the local Lions Club. On July 20th, downtown Milton took a step back in time with over 150 pre-1979 vehicles displayed on the streets. Donors such as Canadian Tire sponsored winning prizes, while Wallace, Mr. Lube and others sponsored the show itself. This trip to the past was a voyage to remember.

BACKYARD BIRDS

ummer or winter, your backyard can become a studio for bird photography. The key is a feeder near a natural feature, such as a small tree (1). Many birds, including the Baltimore Oriole, will seek a safe perch before flying to the feeder. This is where the most natural-looking photos are possible (2,3). A branch can be attached to the feeder, giving the bird a final perch before the feeder (4). Photos at the feeder are the least appealing (5) but do verify that orioles like grape jelly. The photographer was sitting quietly 10 meters from the feeder. Needless to say, the longer the telephoto lens, the better.

The day began with a short parade of champions led by a piper and honour guard, as well as Canadian Red-jacket Champs: Donna McFadden and Dr. Moe Ali. A warm welcome was extended to all out-of-town teams by Ward 2 Councillor, Marianne Meed Ward, as well as a representative from Karina Goulds office. Donna McFadden, who bowled for over 65 years, was awarded a special honour in the form of a lovely white orchid. Ms. Meed Ward kicked things off by pitching the first ball. The men and women’s teams from Ontario’s 16 districts participated with a total of 96 players, stopping for the BBQ luncheon, breaks between games and a disruptive rainfall on the first day. On Friday, July 27th, local spectators’ numbers increased to watch the final games, top teams vying for the Provincial Championship. Congratulations to the Women’s Gold medalist team hailing from Saugeen Shores: Glenda Courtice, Sandy Weatherall and Theresa Bester. RE CIPE

This is a perfect pass around summer appetizer. The eggplant rounds are a great replacement for the usual baguette bruschetta. You can grill the eggplant well in advance, they do not need to be served warm. You can make the bruschetta toping several hours ahead, just remember, never refrigerate tomatoes! Put it all together last minute. Serves: 10

Ingredients P E R F EC T G R I L L E D EG G P L A N T R O U N D S

• 2 small Eggplants • Sea Salt for sprinkling

Directions

• Olive Oil for brushing on the eggplant

ST E P 0 1 / Grilled Eggplant Rounds: Preheat the grill to med high. ST E P 02 / Slice eggplants in 1/4 1/2 inch rounds, lay out on a large sheet of paper towel. ST E P 03 / Sprinkle with sea salt and

let stand for 20 minutes, the eggplant will sweat. Blot the slices dry with paper towel. ST E P 04 / Brush each slice of

eggplant with olive oil on both sides (don’t miss spots).

ST E P 0 5 / Grill the slices for about 5 minutes per side, the slices should be golden brown on each side and a little crispy, you may need more time. Place the rounds on a platter. ST E P 0 6 / Bruschetta Mixture: Sea-

son the tomatoes with salt and put them in a colander to drain for 5-10 minutes (or longer). Transfer tomatoes to a bowl and fold in remaining ingredients, season with salt and freshly ground pepper. ST E P 07 / Top each round with the

Dear Wine Ladies,

ASK

We are quickly becoming fans of the red wines of Bordeaux and recently heard someone refer to Bordeaux as Claret. Is Claret a kind of wine from Bordeaux or is it from a different region? Also, I have heard the term Meritage from Bordeaux, what is the difference? - Jackie

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jackie, The term claret is actually a moniker if you will, used mostly by the British for the red wines of Bordeaux, with its origin dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. During this time period the red wines of Bordeaux were generally much lighter in colour and much paler. The word claret comes from the Latin word clarus that means “clear.” These days although not so commonly used claret is used as a general term for the red wines of Bordeaux, as well as red wines made in the Bordeaux style. The grapes permitted to make red Bordeaux are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, either as single varietal wines or any blend of the five. Meritage wines are not from Bordeaux, rather they are wines blended with the traditional noble grape varietals of Bordeaux. The term Meritage, which rhymes with heritage combines “merit” meant to reflect the quality of the grapes, and “heritage” recognizing the centuries-old tradition of blending, long considered being the highest form of the winemaker’s art. Wines labelled Meritage first 14

appeared in the late 1980s after a group of American vintners joined forces to create a name for New World wines blended in the tradition of Bordeaux. In 1988, The Meritage Association was formed issuing licenses strictly to wines meeting specific criteria.

JOSEPH BRANT DAY BY LESLIE STYLES

The city of Burlington, proclaiming the August Civic Holiday as Joseph Brant Day, paid tribute to the famous Mohawk Chief in Lasalle Park on August 6th. Brant was one of Burlington’s original settlers during the early 1800s. Visitors were able to enjoy live performances, take advantage of a food truck rally and a large market of local vendors and artisans. Many guests ventured into the wading pool to find relief from the blistering heat. 02

IT’S TIME TO

GET FIT

f you really want to get the most out of your golf experience and enjoy the game as much as possible; custom golf clubs are a must. The perceived downside of custom-made clubs is the cost. However, a golfer can get a professional set of clubs, like Callaway, for same cost of an off-the-shelf set. The notion of higher cost is now a myth. If you are planning on purchasing a new set of brand-name, off the shelf golf clubs, make sure they are fit to you and not just “off the shelf.” Stock clubs were no doubt made for some hypothetical average golfer of average size and ability. Is that you? Chances are about 10 to 1 it isn’t. The only way to be certain about fit is to have custom golf clubs sized and built for you. More and more golfers are realizing this and getting better results. With the use of analysis equipment like Trackman in the hands of a certified club fitter, you will play better and be happier in the end. WHAT DOES A CUSTOM FITTING CONSIST OF? Hitting a few balls with a couple different pre-made clubs at the driving range isn’t real custom fitting. You may get a feel for what clubs with different shafts, weights and lie angles feel like, but that’s about it. Custom clubmakers should have a procedure that resembles the following: - Interview and existing equipment analysis (What’s the longest iron I’m comfortable hitting in my set now?) - Measurement of swing speeds with driver and midiron with measurements of launch angles, spin rates, attack angles using high-end equipment like Trackman Golf.

- Measurement of your height and wrist to floor distance. - Determine specific shafts and matching club heads. (The best method for this is to be fitted at a facility where the demo clubs have detachable heads and shafts, so several combinations can be quickly assembled for trial purposes.) - Determine set make-up. (Driver loft, hybrid options, iron loft, length and lie angles, loft and bounce angles of wedges, proper grip material and sizes.) Now that you’re finished reading this article, it’s time to ask yourself, ”am I fit?”
