Music lovers gathered in Hendrie Park on August 22nd to enjoy the Royal Botanical Gardens outdoor concert. It was a beautiful summer evening, with the aroma of barbecued chicken wafting from the grill into the audience, and the soulful sounds of blues singer, Jordan John. Brian Bates, owner of Bates Audio and supplier of sound systems for these outdoor performances, was pleased to note the success of these concerts in terms of audience size.

ASKING FOR HELP
IS SCARY BY THE WOMEN’S CENTRE OF HALTON
t The Women’s Centre of Halton, our first priority is ensuring that the women who access our services find the help that they need in one place. We know that it can take several attempts before a woman is able to summon the courage to walk through our doors. That’s one of the reasons why we do our best to provide wrap-around services to meet as many of each woman’s needs as we possibly can. What does this really mean? It means that a woman who is feeling lost because she is going through a divorce can get legal help at one of our free clinics, along with programs to improve her self-esteem. It means that a woman who is dealing with the trauma of abuse can see a crisis counsellor, and then speak with an employment coach to help her get back to work. It means that a woman who feels all alone can

meet with other women who will be her cheerleaders, her support network, and her friends. At The Women’s Centre of Halton, everything we do is informed by the philosophy that each client is the only true expert on her own life. Rather than dispensing advice, we listen to each woman’s story and help her explore her options based on her own goals and aspirations. Unlike other places where women may go for help, we never push a woman to take actions that are contrary to her beliefs and values. Rather, we empower her and provide her with the tools she needs to effect positive change in her own life. If you know a woman who is struggling, please encourage her to give us a call. We now have offices in both Oakville and Milton. We will walk with her as she navigates the challenges in her life. For more information, please visit thewomenscentreofhalton.com

RE CIPE
Every year, when the leaves change colour, the air gets colder and the layers get heavier, I crave a specific warm dessert that signifies all the cozy feelings this changing season brings. Unfortunately, in usual hibernation-fashion, cozy usually means carb-y. This crisp truly showcases the sweet, warm flavours fall has to offer, but without all the usual guilt. I use an assortment of apples to achieve an array of flavours and textures, and a mixture of oats and nuts to achieve a healthier crisp. Serves: 8
Ingredients FO R T H E A P P L E S
• 5 Apples* • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice • 1 1/2 tbsp Cornstarch or Arrowroot Powder • 1 1/2 tbsp Coconut Sugar or Cane Sugar
Directions
ST E P 04 / Crisp Topping: In a medium
ST E P 0 1 / Preheat the oven to 375°F. ST E P 02 / For the Apples: Peel the apples and using a paring knife, slice the apples right off the core in thin uneven pieces. (I am not a fan of coring the apples and then slicing them into wedges on a cutting board. I find the apples do not cook as well. I prefer thin slicing them right off the core and leaving the core behind.) ST E P 03 / In a large mixing bowl, toss the
apples with the lemon juice. Sprinkle with the cornstarch or arrowroot, sugar, cinnamon and salt, toss. Place apple mixture in a medium size shallow baking dish, about 2-quart (smaller than a lasagna dish), about 10” x 8-9” x 8”, or even smaller.
size mixing bowl, mix together the oats, almond flour, toasted pecans, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Using your fingers, mix in the butter or coconut oil, massaging it into the dry mixture. Scatter this mixture on top of the apples in the baking dish.
• 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon • Pinch of Sea Salt FO R T H E C R I S P TO P P I N G
• 1 cup/100g Rolled Oats (I like large flake or old fashioned) • 1/2 cup/45g Almond Flour
ST E P 0 5 / Bake for 60-75 minutes or until the apples are bubbling and the topping is golden.
• 1/2 cup/60g chopped Pecans, toasted**
ST E P 0 6 / Serve warm in individual bowls,
• 1/4 tsp Sea Salt
dolloped with Greek yogurt, sprinkled with cinnamon and a drizzle of honey.
• 2 tbsp Unsalted Butter or Coconut Oil, room temperature
* I use 2 Granny Smith, one Honey Crisp, one Pink Lady and one Spartan, but choose what you like, as long as you use two Granny Smith and do not use Macintosh. ** I place the whole pecans in a zip lock bag and smash them with the back of a fry pan to chop them, then I place them in a dry fry pan and cook them on low heat until they are fragrant and toasted. This takes about 10 minutes.
• 1/4 cup/40g Coconut Sugar or Cane Sugar • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
FO R T H E G R E E K YO G U RT
• 2 tbsp low fat Greek Yogurt • Sprinkle of Cinnamon • 2 tsp Honey to drizzle

Waterdown BIA partnered with local landscapers, colours and beautifies the Village each summer with its 10 competition flower beds on both Hamilton and Dundas Streets. This year’s theme was a “touch of whimsy,” encouraging a lot of colour, personality, various heights and curvy lines in the gardens. A panel of experts, as well as People’s Choice ballots, determined the 2018 Gold and Silver winners. The panel of judges included Karen Brunsch of the Flamborough Horticultural Society, Rob Howard, Garden Writer, Ward 15 Councillor Judi Partridge and Jon Peter of the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Dear Wine Ladies,
ASK
This fall I am trying to think and drink outside the proverbial box and have discovered a fabulous white wine called Arneis. I’d never heard of it, found it delicious, well priced and a hit with our friends as well. Can you tell me a little about this wine? - Brianna
THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Brianna, Arneis is actually a grape variety that comes from the North Western region of Piedmont in Italy. It is one of close to five hundred grape varieties indigenous to Italy. Becoming more popular these days, we are seeing more of these wines showing up on the shelves of our liquor stores. Like you, it seems wine drinkers are becoming more adventurous, and when the price is right, as it can be with Arneis, eureka!
distracted away from the prized Nebbiolo grapes which make the highly regarded and famous wines of Barolo. A close-up of Arneis grapes.
The variety’s name is derived from a Piedmontese word meaning “little rascal.” This is due to the fact that the grapes are hard to grow, as Arneis is a low cropping variety and is susceptible to mildew. As in life, and as it is with the finicky noble grape Pinot Noir, known as the “heart break grape,“ a little struggle builds character and when the stars align, can make a wonderful wine. Just as a little side note - Arneis has been and is known to play a role as a protector in the vineyards. To the rescue, it is sometimes planted next to vineyards planted with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the king red varietal of the region. Due to Arneis grapes’ stronger smell, hungry birds taken with the aroma become 14

BURLINGTON RIB FEST BY LESLIE STYLES
From August 31st to September 3nd, Burlington enjoyed Canada’s largest Ribfest in Spencer Smith Park. This event was planned and organized by the Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore since 1996 and seems to grow every year with 19 vendors on Ribbers Row presently. Over 30 musical acts performed onstage during the weekend, while guests enjoyed crafters tents and the kid’s zone. Mission Possible Escape Rooms presented a challenge to participants and some guests kicked back in the VIP lounge or beer tents. Proceeds collected since 1996 have gone to charity.

SCHOOL LIFE GARY ALLAN HIGH SCHOOL
Our staff and students are gearing up for another great year here at Gary Allan High School after a much deserved summer break. Our Alternative program will continue to provide programing for students that don’t fit the mold of a “regular” school, working towards engaging our students in their education and then transitioning into post-secondary options including work, college apprenticeships, etc. Our adult program is now into our second year of fully online courses, with teacher support in Online Plus. Adult students are able to access all offered courses through an online portal, with the “PLUS” of being able to come in and get face to face help from teachers, technical assistance and computer access at any of the four locations across Halton. We have locations in Milton, Halton Hills, Oakville and Burlington. We will still provide the opportunity for students of all ages to complete credits towards the achievement of their high school diploma, for post-secondary preparation or to upgrade their skills for the workplace, with the added flexibility of being able to work on their courses anytime and anywhere. At the end of June, we celebrated the graduation of many students across our four locations with a North and a South Graduation Ceremony. There was rarely a dry eye in the house as students received awards for their achievements and celebrated the completion of their diplomas. Students that crossed the stage in their cap and gown ranged in ages from 17 to 70, every one of them proud of their accomplishment. Teachers, support staff, admin and board officials are all very proud of all of our graduates, all of whom have overcome their own obstacles in their journey to graduation. This month, in our Alternative programs, students will be getting started on their academic courses as well as building community inside and outside the school. A number of field trips and fun learning activities are already being planned. Registration is open for our Online Plus Adult Program for the 20182019 school year. Adult students interested in working towards the completion of their diploma, preparation for post-secondary or just upgrading their skills can schedule an appointment through our website. Adolescents interested in our alternative program (STEP) should contact their guidance department regarding a referral.

MILTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL
If you happened to drive along Commercial Street in late August, you may have noticed the full parking lot at MD. Like every other school, we were hard at work doing the virtually endless number of tasks that must be completed in order to get ready for another successful year. What you may have found odd was the number of students who were at school; close to 200 teenagers voluntarily spent the final portion of their summer vacation AT SCHOOL, in order to support their own, or others’ success. One great initiative was a three day program run by Gary Allan High School in Burlington and supported here at MD by Bonnie Wrigglesworth and our Student Success Team to welcome students with extra support for their transition to high school. The fun and interactive activities boosted the confidence and comfort of the participants to get them ready for Day One and a great semester. On a larger scale, over 75 students from grades 10 through 12 applied last spring to be on our Link Crew. The group met with staff leaders to learn the Day One welcome program for our hundreds of incoming grade nine students. In addition to these amazing social events, our football camp was underway in the searing heat of August. That’s dedication! These efforts resulted in our new (and returning) students noticing what we at MD have always known; there is something about our school, a “Je ne sais quoi” that is hard to put your finger on. It has something to do with the sense you get when you walk up to the door and a student holds it for you; the feeling you get when you walk through our halls; the greetings and smiles you receive from people in our MD community.
The admin and staff at MD have made it a point to capture, articulate, cultivate and grow this sense, reported in growing numbers by those who come to us -- be they students, parents, guest speakers, or members of our community. This “vibe” has always been strong, and it grows stronger each year. (Perhaps this is the reason for the unprecedented numbers of students who decided to register at MD over the summer!)
Next, we ELEVATE everyone by ensuring that every person’s learning moves forward in a way that is suited to every individual. People learn in class, and out, from curriculum to sports and growing numbers and types of clubs. Learning your passion is key, and we aim to find it, and nurture it. Ultimately, we do this in a community of RESPECT, building on a legacy of those who came before us, since this has always been at the core of who we are. The LIVE DIFFERENT event the first week of class sets the tone that “kindness changes everything” and is experienced by our entire community. We welcome you to come in and see what this feels like for yourself, and we can’t wait to share our experiences that bring our magic to life over the course of the year! BY A. GLEESON PHOTO BY RON VAN ZUTPHEN
Why? In short, everyone at MD is committed to upholding our mission of always providing an exemplary learning experience for everyone. That, and living our values. We work to ensure that every single person feels they BELONG. We run bonding programs for every grade, both on and off campus. Our entire grade ten class will head out for an unforgettable Wilderness North experience the third week of September. This program has been running for countless years, and the memorable week forms supportive relationships that last throughout high school, and beyond.

OF GOLF
What goes on mentally during a game of golf is just as important as what’s happening on the green. To play golf well, you have to train your muscles and practice your shots. However, you also have to train your mind. It’s just as important to keep your focus during a golf game. Here are some ideas for keeping your mind on your game. DEVELOP A PRE-SHOT ROUTINE A pre-shot routine helps you clear your mind and remove distractions before you take your swing. Pros always recommend developing a pre-shot routine and there are as many different routines as there are players. Visit www.thegolfersacademy.com to get better at golf. FOCUS ON THE MATTER-AT-HAND When it’s time to make your shot, you need to focus. This means that you shouldn’t be thinking of your next shot or your last shot. Jumping ahead and planning your next move can be counterproductive. Be “in the moment!” Also, don’t worry about the final score when you’re making a shot, think about the shot you’re making now.
THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING Keep negative thoughts at bay. It’s amazing how a little negativity can destroy your concentration. Going into the game thinking (knowing) that you’re going to play well, produces good results. If you focus on success rather than failure, it’ll pay you. It’s also all-too-easy to dwell on a bad shot. Even the pros miss perfectly good shots. You just have to put it behind you and move on to the next. It doesn’t help to dwell on your mistakes. Or even better, use your mistakes to learn. When you have a bad shot, figure out what went wrong so that you don’t repeat it. Failure is an opportunity to learn!
TAKE IT EASY In all sports, but especially golf, you need to relax in order to play well. Too much tension will destroy your swing every time. Golf requires finesse. You have to keep your movements loose and fluid. MAKE IT GO WHERE YOU WANT IT Many golf pros have sworn by “creative visualization.” This means that if you imagine the ball going into the hole, it will go there. The reason why this works is that it motivates you and builds up your confidence. Also, studies have shown that when athletes visualize, it sharpens their muscles. It’s a little like mental practice. GET CLOSE Focus on your target, even if you’re just trying to get close to a hole. Don’t shoot for the general direction, but pick a spot where you want the ball to land. If you focus in this way, it’ll strengthen your game and help you practice getting the ball where you want it. There are lots of ways to improve your game through practice and technique over the long winters, but the mental game is just as important as the physical. Seek out a high level training centre to work on your golf game and be mentally and physically prepared for when the golf season begins in spring.

THE TRUTH IS... You’re likely going to buy a lawyer a boat.
Here are some examples:
There’s a scourge that is taking its toll on our community and it’s been that way for years. The truth is, too many families are buying too many lawyers too many boats. But more seriously, the financial costs of this tormentor pales in comparison to the emotional cost and generational devastation it causes.
• “Of course we know how we’re going to split the proceeds and share the costs of this property we own with Mom/Dad/Son/Daughter/Brother/Sister” • “I’ve known my business partner since I was 14, whatever comes up, we’ll be able to work it out.” • “We’re in love. We have so much in common! It’s forever.”
The bad news is your family has been or is likely to be impacted by it. The good news is you have the power to do something about it.
• “I trust my husband. If something happens to me, he’ll make sure my kids will get what he inherits from me.”
The menace you need to target is bad planning. Too many individuals, families and businesses do not and have not taken their legal and relationship planning nearly seriously enough and it’s costing way too much financial and emotional currency – and it doesn’t have to be this way.
Bad planning is easy because you don’t have to do anything. Just hope. But that’s the exact attitude that lawyers who want boats want you to have. The truth is, life does not play out like this and it’s costing our community. You may have a plan, but it’s not nearly good enough.
Bad planning is super easy! You’re likely doing it right now.
Brown Lawyers are advice first legal advisors. We encourage empowerment, self-determination and certainty to help you achieve your best, most enjoyable life. We work with individuals, families and business to plan for the inevitable down times of life and to be best positioned to take advantage of it’s glorious opportunities. Bad times may be inevitable, but conflict is not. Make sure your family does not buy a lawyer a boat, contact us today to start your best planning.
