he Don Rowing Club celebrated their 140th Anniversary on July 21st. The club has been around for over a century, overcoming many competitors with tenacity. The club hosted a boat christening with 7 boats. Notably, one boat was renamed by the family of Fred Loek, Mississauga Hall of Famer and long-time chief of photography for Mississauga News. The waters awaited the arrival of the club’s familiar boats once more.

JIM TOVEY’S INDUCTION TO THE MUSIC WALK OF FAME BY GABRIELLA BANK / PHOTOGRAPHY BY SANBORG PHOTO

n July 22nd, Jim Tovey’s induction to the Music Walk of Fame commenced. Unfortunately, due to the unfavourable weather conditions, the traditional unveiling of the star was put on hold. Instead, the ceremonies were moved into the River Room of the Arena. The space was filled with family, friends and the people of Port Credit. Speakers such as Mayor Bonnie Crombie and MP Sven Spengeman shared their favourite, funny and loving stories of Jim. Inductee Gil Moore of Metalworks sponsored the production and read a story of Jim written by John Stewart. Many artists such as Jim’s bandmates (Andrew Dixon and Dave Smith) made a special musical tribute in memory of their dear friend. After the ceremonies, the skies cleared, shining sunlight on the long awaited unveiling of Jim’s star.

PORT CREDIT RIBFEST BY JASMIN EL-TAHRY

ort Credit Memorial Park was sizzling with excitement from July 12th to 15th. BBQ lovers and all enjoyed a wide array of delicious food on the beautiful waterfront venue. Camp 31 and Crabby’s BBQ shack were just a few of the many Ribbers to choose from. They served up a welcoming feast for all to indulge: halal, vegetarian and vegan options were all made available. Activities were aplenty, but the musical entertainment really stood out. Everyday there were non-stop tunes of R&B, Blues and Country music. Amacon and other generous sponsors made all of this possible. This event was sure to make you say “yum!”

BACKYARD BIRDS

ummer or winter, your backyard can become a studio for bird photography. The key is a feeder near a natural feature, such as a small tree (1). Many birds, including the Baltimore Oriole, will seek a safe perch before flying to the feeder. This is where the most natural-looking photos are possible (2,3). A branch can be attached to the feeder, giving the bird a final perch before the feeder (4). Photos at the feeder are the least appealing (5) but do verify that orioles like grape jelly. The photographer was sitting quietly 10 meters from the feeder. Needless to say, the longer the telephoto lens, the better.

Dear Wine Ladies,

ASK

We are quickly becoming fans of the red wines of Bordeaux and recently heard someone refer to Bordeaux as Claret. Is Claret a kind of wine from Bordeaux or is it from a different region? Also, I have heard the term Meritage from Bordeaux, what is the difference? - Jackie

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jackie, The term claret is actually a moniker if you will, used mostly by the British for the red wines of Bordeaux, with its origin dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. During this time period the red wines of Bordeaux were generally much lighter in colour and much paler. The word claret comes from the Latin word clarus that means “clear.” These days although not so commonly used claret is used as a general term for the red wines of Bordeaux, as well as red wines made in the Bordeaux style. The grapes permitted to make red Bordeaux are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, either as single varietal wines or any blend of the five. Meritage wines are not from Bordeaux, rather they are wines blended with the traditional noble grape varietals of Bordeaux. The term Meritage, which rhymes with heritage combines “merit” meant to reflect the quality of the grapes, and “heritage” recognizing the centuries-old tradition of blending, long considered being the highest form of the winemaker’s art. Wines labelled Meritage first 18

appeared in the late 1980s after a group of American vintners joined forces to create a name for New World wines blended in the tradition of Bordeaux. In 1988, The Meritage Association was formed issuing licenses strictly to wines meeting specific criteria.

MISSISSAUGA MUSIC WEEK

01

It was a musically packed event for the first ever Mississauga Music Week, from July 30th to August 4th. The launch party started July 30th at Roc’n Docs, in Port Credit with Keys to Belfast, Melle Rose and The Southdowns. Open Mics were happening all over the city for performers to take the microphone and show their stuff. It all ended with Mississauga’s longest running two day free festival, Rock The Coliseum that had over fifteen local performers. So much talent in Mississauga!

THE MAMA MARKET BY JASMIN EL-TAHRY

The Mama Market set anchor at the First United Church in Port Credit, on July 21st. The Market was started by two Mississauga mamas. The pair loved to shop local and shop small, so they started this cute, pop-up Mama Market. Now there are over 40 vendors to choose from and the wares are catered to moms and kids of all ages. Admission was free; so all attendees could enjoy some coffee and mingle with other mamas. 02

he sizzling of ribs on the grill could be heard from all over Port Credit Memorial Park on July 12th. The Mississauga Rotary Ribfest was great, but it was a downright blast for those with MBOT. All attendees enjoyed the decadent ribs and diverse foods; MBOT’s special guests received their own half rack of ribs, dessert and an all access VIP pass. All proceeds went to a vast array of charities to feed the hungry, improve education and provide community programs for the young and old. The festival was fortunate enough to have the support Amacon, one of their many sponsors. Everyone left the festival satisfied with full bellies and sticky faces.
