GOOD HEARING
HEALTH earing is our most critical sense for communication. Visiting your audiologist is a step towards better hearing health as we know that 1 in 5 Canadians has a hearing loss.1 What is most concerning is that 77% of adults with hearing loss remain undiagnosed. Hearing loss can happen very gradually, and can easily go unnoticed. Common signs include: asking people to repeat, complaints the TV is too loud, or difficulty hearing in groups.
SOCIAL ISOLATION: When people have difficulty hearing they withdraw from social situations because they cannot effectively communicate. Social isolation can lead to a higher rate of cognitive decline.
A comprehensive hearing test provides information regarding the health of your ears and whether you have normal hearing or hearing loss. If you have concerns with your hearing or are over the age of 50, a baseline hearing test is recommended.
DIABETES: Hearing loss is twice as common in those with diabetes. It is recommended that these individuals undergo annual hearing tests.3
The effects of hearing loss reach far beyond the ear, and are associated with other health conditions:
RISK OF FALLS: Individuals with hearing loss are at greater risk of falls. As the hearing loss worsens, the risk of falling increases.4
DEMENTIA: When you strain to hear, your brain utilizes resources to understand what is being said. This takes away from other areas of the brain leaving minimal resources for regular cognitive processing. Treating hearing loss with hearing aids can reduce the rate of cognitive decline.2
Hearing loss not only affects the individual, but those around them, and can influence other facets of our health.
HEART DISEASE: A decrease in blood flow can deprive certain parts of the ear that are sensitive to constant blood flow. This can result in permanent hearing loss.
If you or a loved one have concerns about their hearing, call to schedule your hearing test with our Audiologist or visit www.pcaudiology.ca. http://www.statcan.gc.ca; Cruickshanks et al. 1998 Archives of Neurology, Feb 2012; Annals of Internal Medicine National Institutes of Health, June 2008 4 Public Health Agency of Canada, 2014 1 2 3
Contact us today and find out what our Audiologist can do to treat your hearing loss!

20TH ANNUAL TIM HORTON’S SOUTHSIDE SHUFFLE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEETER POLDRE
There was plenty of music, dancing and celebrating during this year’s 20th annual Tim Horton’s Southside Shuffle event that occurred in Port Credit Memorial Park from Friday, Sept 7th through Sunday, Sept 9th. It all started 20 years ago by founder and artistic director Chuck Jackson’s vision to bring the blues to Port Credit. This festival now draws over 75,000 people worldwide and the Mississauga Arts Council has awarded it as “Mississauga’s Best Festival” with the MARTY award. The main stage headliners included Coco Montoya, Savoy Brown and the Legendary Downchild Blues Band. Rabba Fine Foods Street Shuffle opened with a memorable street parade and featured bands and acts performing at various locations up and down Lakeshore Road East. So much talent and so much fun made this event a huge success. Thank you to all the volunteers, organizers, sponsors and performers that helped make this 20th anniversary a special celebration. 14

Dear Wine Ladies,
ASK
This fall I am trying to think and drink outside the proverbial box and have discovered a fabulous white wine called Arneis. I’d never heard of it, found it delicious, well priced and a hit with our friends as well. Can you tell me a little about this wine? - Brianna
THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Brianna, Arneis is actually a grape variety that comes from the North Western region of Piedmont in Italy. It is one of close to five hundred grape varieties indigenous to Italy. Becoming more popular these days, we are seeing more of these wines showing up on the shelves of our liquor stores. Like you, it seems wine drinkers are becoming more adventurous, and when the price is right, as it can be with Arneis, eureka!
distracted away from the prized Nebbiolo grapes which make the highly regarded and famous wines of Barolo. A close-up of Arneis grapes.
The variety’s name is derived from a Piedmontese word meaning “little rascal.” This is due to the fact that the grapes are hard to grow, as Arneis is a low cropping variety and is susceptible to mildew. As in life, and as it is with the finicky noble grape Pinot Noir, known as the “heart break grape,“ a little struggle builds character and when the stars align, can make a wonderful wine. Just as a little side note - Arneis has been and is known to play a role as a protector in the vineyards. To the rescue, it is sometimes planted next to vineyards planted with the Nebbiolo grape, which is the king red varietal of the region. Due to Arneis grapes’ stronger smell, hungry birds taken with the aroma become 18
