On February 19th, many celebrated Family Day at Memorial Park, in Waterdown, at the new rotary skating loop. It was made up of 230 meters of ice that is climate controlled, with a skate change area and washrooms on site. Waterdown residents looked forward to skating performances planned for that evening, as well as the arrival of food trucks.

WITH MAYOR KRANTZ This year’s Mayor’s Breakfast, hosted by Milton Chamber of Commerce and held at Rattle Snake Point Golf Club, on February 16th, was a sold-out event. The theme was Milton 2018: A Place of Possibility and was presented by Town of Milton CAO, Bill Mann. Bill spoke of the Town’s 2018 priorities and explored the opportunities that come with being a growing community. Following the presentation, there was an opportunity to ask questions, with inquiries about transportation being brought up the most. This year’s presenting sponsors were Bell, OLG and Cogeco. It was a perfect morning to meet old friends and business associates, as well as meet many new ones.

The Sports Celebrity Dinner & Auction was held at Rattlesnake Golf Club, on Tuesday, February 6th. One of Milton’s most talked about events, The Sports Celebrity Dinner & Auction, brought together sports heroes and sports enthusiasts alike. There was an autograph signing session, as well as an opportunity to touch the Stanley Cup! After the cocktail reception, a delicious gourmet dinner was served then each celebrity spoke. Hosted by Milton Chamber of Commerce, the proceeds of this event went towards the Scholarship Program, which funds local students in their post-secondary education. Their goal is to raise sufficient money, in order to create an endowment fund that will be self-funding into the future, to ensure monies will be in place in perpetuity to provide scholarships to Milton’s youth.

On Febraury 17th, there was lots of action at the Mainway Arena, when 35 Artisan Vendors from the Golden Horseshoe set up shop. Entertainment was offered throughout the day, with costumed characters tumbling at the gymnastics obstacle course, courtesy of Monkeynastix. Youngsters were fascinated at the Mad Science table with Dr. Dee Enay and Professor Meg Nesium. Families browsed, stopping to munch on pizza from the snack bar, and enjoying the start of their Family Day weekend.

On February 10th, The Women’s Centre held it’s 2nd Annual LOVE DOES Gala. Thanks to the support of the community, the Centre’s gala raised more than $16,000, which ensures women in need will continue to have access to support, education and empowerment through their many programs and workshops. The Women’s Centre strives to empower women to alleviate social isolation, to foster independence and gain self-sufficiency through their many programs.

Carl: the town’s hockey-hopeful from a wealthy family is predicted that he’ll be drafted to one of the major NHL teams but in order to do so he must graduate high school. Sonja agrees to tutor him because she needs the money, and so begins the story of Sonja & Carl: a novel. Carl is drafted to the Boston Bruins while Sonja attends University of Toronto. Within his first year on the team, Carl suffers a concussion that brings the two together again. Their journey is an unconventional, slow burn romance but a beautiful one nonetheless.

Geared towards young adult readers, I found that this novel appeals to a wider audience. Although the story follows the characters from age 17-20, they are faced with several mature situations. The book touches on issues of poverty, wealth, death, love, and heartbreak, to name a few. It delves into the world of professional hockey, sports related injuries, and the pressure to get back in the game.

’ve always appreciated a good storytelling, and in her first work, Canadian author Suzanne Hillier delivers just that with her debut novel Sonja & Carl: a novel.
The story revolves around Sonja Danychuk and Carl Helbig, two contrary high school students who are thrown together under unusual circumstances. In their small town of Davenport, Ontario, Sonja: an intelligent high school student from a very poor immigrant family, hopes to be

In the making of this novel, Hillier, a retired lawyer, researched concussions related to hockey injuries, and interviewed several families of injured players who suffered irreversible damage at the hands of the sport. Sonja & Carl: a novel takes you on a ride that is as heart-warming as it is wrenching, with unexpected emotion at several turns. Featuring dynamic characters with rich history, I would recommend this to lovers of well-written fiction.

QUICK EDITS ost photographs will benefit from some quick basic editing after the photo has been taken. If using a smartphone, editing can often be done on the phone itself. Computer-based editing software can also be used. First, make sure that the photo is straight/level, especially for horizons, poles and other vertical edges. On some smartphones, leveling occurs automatically when you begin to crop the image. In photo 1, the photographer was so excited to capture the sunrise that he overlooked the slanted horizon. This was corrected on the smartphone for photo 2. Second, check to see whether the photo needs more or less light/ exposure. Most smartphones will have a way of adjusting exposure on the image. Third, crop the photo to discard elements that are distracting or not needed. It’s completely understandable that in the heat of capturing the moment (3) extraneous things can be left in the photo. Editing helps (4).

It was not the coldest night, but it was certainly lots of fun on February 24th, for Milton’s CNOY. This year over $44,555.00 was raised for Milton Transitional Housing, which exceeded their goal by 111%! Milton Transitional Housing is a communitybased, registered Canadian charity that provides bridge accommodation and supportive counselling to people in Milton who are experiencing a housing crisis. MTH’s program assists participants in overcoming their challenges while they work towards securing their own independent, stable housing. An enthusiastic crowd gathered at St. James United Church, in Waterdown for The Coldest Night of the Year Walk, on February 24th. Waterdown was very proud that on their first CNOY Walk, nearly $35,000 was raised, for the benefit of Drummond House, a transitional home for women and children. CNOY takes place in various Ontario cities and raises funds for local charities that serve the hungry, homeless and hurting. Since the walk began in 2011, it’s raised 18 million dollars. Our self paced adult online program has transitioned to second semester with many students completing credits and many new students starting up. Students are working towards preparing for post secondary, while others are working towards completing their diploma or upgrading their skills for the workplace. College and University offers are beginning to come out for those students that have applied and many of our students already have conditional acceptances. Gary Allan provides opportunities for students of all ages to complete credits towards the attainment of their goals and to further them along their chosen pathway. On February 22nd, our Georgetown location hosted a community event “Explore the Trades Fair” in partnership with VPI (a local employment program group) to connect job seekers and youth to apprenticeship programs and hands-on opportunities in the trades. The event included representatives from GAHS, The Centre, a number of colleges, Service Canada and many more. It was very well attended with students and community members learning a great deal. The group at the Bronte Creek Project, located at Sidrabene on Appleby Line, are welcoming a brand-new group of students from across Halton into our outdoor education programs: Trail Head (Grade 10) and BCP (Grade 11-12). They are looking forward to another exciting semester of hiking, camping, snow shoeing, climbing, connecting

Lastly, on Feb 22, Milton MP Lisa Raitt, Milton Mayor Gord Krantz and other notable volunteers helped celebrate the thriving BREAKFAST program at our school which is sponsored by Halton Food for Thought. Each day, students enjoy a hearty breakfast of any variety of eggs, pancakes and smoothies. Launched in the fall by Ms Wrigglesworth, the Shack has been open every morning to anyone who missed breakfast, regardless of the reason. The program has been received and grown so WELL, that local officials were happy to help serve hundreds of hungry students before they headed off to class.

I am not too familiar with bison, leaning toward a ribeye and wondered if you have any suggestions on which wines might pair well and/or any ideas on how best to prepare and perhaps even source these meats? I live in a rural area so there’s not too much availability in my neck of the woods. - Jacqueline
THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jacqueline, We too are fans of the various meat alternatives such as bison, becoming increasingly more popular in restaurants and more available in butcher shops. Bison (often used interchangeably with buffalo meat) is known to be leaner and less dense than beef and is widely accepted as one of the tastiest and healthiest all-natural alternatives to the traditional meats.
The reason the level of tannins are relevant when it comes to pairing red wines and meat is that tannins cut through the fat of the meat. If one is enjoying a fattier cut, such as a juicy fatty rib eye steak, opt for a big Napa Cabernet for example. As bison is a high protein, lower fat alternative, a better choice would be a red wine with softer tannins such as a Pinot Noir, Malbec, a softer Syrah or perhaps a Tuscan Sangiovese. As far as availability goes, upon a little investigative work, we learned of a company based in Montreal that markets highquality bison raised without the use of any chemicals, hormones or steroids. Norfolk Bison ships across Canada and offer a wide range of wild game products. There is also one recipe we would like to share with you called the “Double Bison Sirloin; Michael Jordan’s style” that includes a touch of truffle oil and would pair beautifully with a silky Pinot Noir.
When it comes to wine pairing, because bison has considerably less fat than beef, wines with less tannin will make for a better match. WHAT IS TANNIN? Tannins come from the skins, stems, and seeds of the grapes, as well as from the oak barrels the wine may have been aged in. That dry sensation you feel in your mouth when drinking a red wine is due to the tannin in the wine. The more tannic the wine, the more you will pucker up and feel the sensation.

The Burlington Model Railway Club sponsored the Winter Train Show, which drew enthusiasts of all ages to St. Johns Anglican Church, on February 10th. There were several intricate model trains in action. Refreshments and light lunches were available from the kitchen. The sponsoring club was established in the 1980s to promote model railroading as a hobby, improve skills of its members and have fun building and running model trains. If you like model trains, visitors and newcomers are always welcome at the Burlington Model Railway Centre, located in Hidden Valley Park. It was a very snowy Friday, February 9th, as the Seniors Life Enhancement Centres kicked off their 25th year of service with an amazing party! The Senior’s Gala was a sold-out event that was held at St. Joseph’s Banquet Hall. The hall was beautifully decorated and all the guests had an amazing time together. Some of the services and programs SLEC offers are Adult Day Program, Community Bath Program, Dental Hygiene Services and Foot Care Clinics. TFSA OR RRSP:
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TAX Still unsure about the differences between a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) and a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)? It’s all about the tax. If you’ve successfully reached your RRSP contribution limit, continue to make deposits to your TFSA, within annual limits plus any unused carry-forward amounts. The limit for 2018 is $5,500 plus carry-forwards. Remember, these deposits are tax-free and taxreceipt-free. In other words, deposits you make to a TFSA won’t reduce your taxable income, you won’t receive a tax receipt for your deposits nor will your withdrawals be taxable. Withdrawals from an RRSP are considered taxable income – more about that in a moment.

It’s also worth noting that your TFSA withdrawals won’t compromise your eligibility to receive federal benefits like Employment Insurance or the Canada Child Tax Benefit. When it comes time to retire, your withdrawals will not be considered as income and will not affect your Canada Pension Plan or Old Age Security payments for example. By contrast, any deposits you make to an RRSP are deducted dollar for dollar from your taxable income in that tax year. For example, if you make $40,000 a year and contribute $2,000 to an RRSP, the tax on your income would be calculated on $38,000 only. And when it comes times to withdraw money from your RRSP, it is considered taxable income and may affect any government benefits.
