HAPPY CANADA DAY! I want to extend my best wishes to everyone celebrating Canada Day in Parkdale-High Park and across Canada. While we celebrate this anniversary in Canadian history, it is crucial that our commemorations are thoughtful and reflective. We must remember the vital importance of reconciliation with Indigenous persons, whose connection to this land extends for millenia before 1867. Today, I also encourage everyone to celebrate the diversity and multiculturalism that makes Canada such a vibrant and welcoming place to live. To everyone across Canada, I wish you a very Happy Canada Day! Parkdale-High Park Office 1596 Bloor Street West Toronto, ON M6P 1A7 416-769-5072

THE RAIN rainy day should not be a reason to leave your camera behind. First, protect the camera. Take photographs from a sheltered location, have someone hold an umbrella, or bring out the camera for only the time needed to shoot. Fortunately, most smartphones can resist some moisture. For expensive cameras, rain covers can be improvised or purchased. Second, look for my four “C”s to bring interest to rainy weather photography: Colour such as umbrellas (1), raincoats (2); Close-ups (3); Consequences such as puddles (4), raindrops (5); Courage for the subjects in the rain (6).

RONCY ROCKS

n June 9th, The Roncesvalles Village BIA held it’s annual Roncy Rocks Music and Arts Fest West. It was a beautiful sunny day to enjoy the many activities held on Roncesvalles Avenue. There were all kinds of zones set up, such as Family Entertainment, Kids Zones, Artists Alley, BBQ Zones, a Flea Market and Live Music. The whole street participated in a sidewalk sale and the restaurants were serving their delicious fares. One highlight was meeting local artists Philip Cote and Jim Thierry Bravo who will be collaborating, along with two youth apprentices, in designing and implementing a new mural on the corner of Garden and Roncesvalles. Roncesvalles Village is known for it’s creative talents and showcase that talent they did.

Dear Wine Ladies,

ASK

On our recent Canada Day celebration, a brave soul cautioned us to stand back as he opened a bottle of Champagne with a sword! How is it that the broken glass doesn’t pose a danger to drinking the bubbly... or does it? - Jessica

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jessica, As unlikely as it may appear, this bottle-slicing method is perfectly safe. When struck, the neck of the Champagne bottle is suddenly detached, allowing it’s bubbly contents to burst forth. This technique is called sabrage. It is because of the pressure in the Champagne bottle, between 70-90 pounds-per-square inch (three times incidentally, of a car tire’s pressure), that sabering is safe, swift and effective. Striking the bottle at it’s weakest spot - where the seam (the line formed by the joined bottle halves) meets the ring (located underneath the cork) creates a fracture that quickly snaps the top cleanly from the body. Propelled by the pressure, the cork and the glass collar, as well as any glass shards fly off and the wine starts to flow. Now all you’re left with is clean and clear Champagne that is absolutely dee-lish! There are several tales as to who was the genius to first sabre a bottle of Champagne. One of the most popular attributes this to the times of Napoléon Bonaparte. In the days following the French Revolution, Napoléon Bonaparte and his soldiers upon returning home victorious of many a battle, had Champagne bottles thrown at them as a form of celebration. 12

While atop their horses, opening the bottles traditionally was no easy task. It was discovered with sword in hand, a swift strike was all that was needed and the custom began.

FERRIS BUELLER’S BEDROOM BY SARAH KEENLYSIDE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN ROFFELSEN

few years ago, I came up with the crazy idea to recreate iconic movie character Ferris Bueller’s bedroom as an art project for the Gladstone Hotel’s Come Up To My Room group art show. The annual show is staged on the second floor of the hotel in what were once guest rooms, but are now used as exhibition space. I really wanted to reference that the rooms were once bedrooms and imagined whose bedroom in history or pop culture I’d most like to visit. The first thing that popped in my mind was Ferris Bueller’s.

14

COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

When the movie debuted in 1986, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was an instant phenomenon. I remember everyone at school talking about it and especially about his room, which was literally plastered with music posters and weird trinkets and tech gadgets. I remember decorating my room as best I could to evoke the same feeling. Today, the film still inspires legions of fans, but nothing could have prepared me for the response to the installation, which coincidently coincided with the 30th anniversary of the movie. Over 4000 people visited during the weekend of Come Up To My Room and nearly every Canadian media outlet interviewed me about it. This led to it being invited to Chicago as part of a one-off, 30th anniversary celebration of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off called Ferris Fest. Again, the response was unprecedented, thousands more came to see the room and after finally appearing at Niagara Falls Comic Con, we estimate that over 10,000 people came to see it. For more info about the installation, please visit www.saveferrisroom.ca. The room is currently in storage, but it’s story isn’t over yet. Together with Canadian broadcaster Hollywood Suite and multi-media production studio Pyramid Attack, we created a VR version of the room! You can find out more about it at www.hollywoodsuite.ca/ferris-vr. Hollywood Suite also made a feature documentary called Ferris’ Room about my experience recreating the room in Chicago. That film is currently available on demand on Hollywood Suite’s 80s channel. www.gladstonehotel.com COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

SPRING GARDEN FESTIVAL n June 16th, the HOPE Garden Steering Committee held the Spring Garden Festival, at Masaryk Park in Parkdale. There was an art making station with Making Room, where indigo dyeing of pollinator shapes were made and hung on the HOPE Garden fence. Phase One of the Food Forest and Pollinator Garden in Dunn Learning Garden was taking shape with all the plantings. The Toronto Beekeepers Co-operative lead the planting in the canoe that was donated by their local community member, James. It was a busy and warm day that was enjoyed by all who attended.
