AMOUNT & INTENSITY OF EXERCISE? Many people wonder how much they need to exercise, how often and how intensely. While there is a lot of research in this area, the answer depends upon your personal goals. Start by thinking about what you want to accomplish. Consider your current fitness level, health and routine. Then think about whether you are getting the results that you are looking for. FOR GENERAL WELLNESS & LONGEVITY Research shows that people who exercise have increased cognitive function, lower stress levels, increased self esteem, less anxiety and lower rates of depression. Exercise helps increase cognitive function (memory, learning, emotional control). One study showed that doing cardiovascular exercise for 6 months, improved cognitive function in older adults. The study subjects experienced better recall, reaction time and spatial memory on tests. Test have shown that University Students perform better on tests immediately following a run. For general wellness Government guidelines suggest that a person needs 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise (or 75 minutes of intense exercise). There is strong research linking longevity to frequency and duration of exercise. A 12-year study of 661,000 people, found that people who exercised 150 minutes per week had a 31% lower risk of dying prematurely. Those who did some exercise, but not quite 150 minutes had a 20% lower risk. However, the optimal amount of exercise was 450 minutes per week, which lowered premature death risk by 39%.

FOR WEIGHT MANAGEMENT & FAT LOSS If you want to lose weight, think about how many calories you are burning during a workout, your total daily caloric intake and your individual caloric needs. Also consider how many pounds you want to lose, in what time frame you want to lose it, your body type and current fitness level. You need to burn 3500 calories to lose 1 pound of fat. Depending upon your fitness level, you may consider different approaches. Ideally you use high intensity and high fat burning exercises. However, if your fitness level is low you will need to increase it before you can do the higher intensity workouts. In this case it is important to get a Wellness Coach or Trainer to help you get fit safely, so that you can move to the higher intensity workouts. FOR BETTER RETURN ON EXERCISE TIME & REACHING OR BREAKING PLATEAUS In order to get the best workout in the shortest period of time, consider doing higher intensity exercise made up of circuits that include both strength training and cardio moves. These programs keep you moving through a series of small or large circuits with minimal breaks. You can download HIIT workout programs at snapfitness.com/blog. Your individual heart rate is one of the most accurate ways to measure exercise intensity. Knowing your heart rate, can help you determine whether you are exercising at the right intensity and whether you should up your exertion level or slow down. If you track all of your workouts, you can begin to understand what condition your body is in on a given day and whether that’s a good day to rest or to push really hard. Adding heart rate tracking technology to your workout also lets both you and your Trainer know how hard you are working by providing instant feedback. Take a minute to think about what you would like to accomplish with regards to personal wellness this year. Think about your current exercise plan and give some thought to whether you need to increase your exercise intensity or try some new programming.

HIGH PARK COMMUNITY GIVES BACK BY JOSIE CANDITO

teve Manderla has been a friendly face in the High Park community for a very long time. Anyone with a pup, who frequents High Park or Sorauren Park, has seen Steve and the immense love he has for the dogs he walks and owns. He was diagnosed with bone cancer in his jaw and the impact it left on his life is clear. After undergoing chemo & radiation therapy that almost took his life, he was left with a difficult decision to make. With a low chance of survival, he underwent surgery to have his jaw, tongue and other cancerous tissue removed to save his life. The road to recovery was long & challenging for Steve and before long, he was also diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition. Having to undergo immediate triple bypass surgery, he once again beat the odds and survived. Steve emerged with his sense of humour, kindness and adoration of dogs fully-intact, and is an inspiration to the community.

10

COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

Prior to his deteriorating health condition, Steve was employed with the TTC. Now on long-term disability, he walks dogs to make ends meet. He relies on his Jeep Wrangler to pick up and transport his clientele. That was until recently, when the rear differential gears broke, on top of many safety related repairs needed, which left him unable to get around. Without the money to have it fixed, his earning power and productivity hit a big roadblock.

MASTER MECHANIC HIGH PARK, LOCAL BUSINESSES AND THE COMMUNITY RALLY TOGETHER TO SURPRISE A BELOVED CANCER SURVIVOR WITH $8,000 IN DESPERATELY NEEDED CAR REPAIRS About half-way to reaching their goal, they reached out to Master Mechanic High Park to repair the Jeep. After hearing his story, Owners Josie Candito, Rui Silvestre and Mike Tavares decided

they couldn’t possibly accept the money, also knowing he was 3 months overdue on his rent payments and would be evicted. Over the last month, the Master Mechanic High Park team completed the repairs, even staying after work late. They worked closely with other generous businesses to make this happen: Napa Auto Parts on Benton Road generously donated ALL of the parts needed for the repairs. Manny’s Auto Trim replaced the windshield. Mr. Transmission Richmond Hill rebuilt the rear-differential which the Master Mechanic High Park team installed. Classique Auto Spa fully detailed the Jeep. Mobil donated $200 in Esso Gas cards to help Steve get around. Custom Coaches provided essential body repair products, so the Master Mechanic High Park staff could do some body repairs. Knowing that dogs are so near to his heart, Master Mechanic also has doggy gift bag ready for his pups and a bag of Benny Bullies for Steve to share with our pawesome community dogs, when he is out dog walking and at the parks! The Master Mechanic High Park staff and the Master Mechanic Corporate have also purchased a $500 Visa for any other expenses he may have, like renewing his license plate sticker. They surprised Steve with his fully repaired Jeep, completed with a BIG red bow at Master Mechanic High Park on May 9th, with all gracious donators present and CBC covering the story. Dear The Wine Ladies,

ASK

As a guest at a comparative Australian wine tasting recently, the observation came up that one of the Cabernet Sauvignon wines from down under had a distinctive aroma resembling eucalyptus. The same notes were then attributed to a Napa Valley Cabernet. I always thought it was the proximity of the trees to the vineyards that allowed this to be true, but eucalyptus in California? - Jeanne

THE WINE LADIES Q&A Dear Jeanne,

We are often asked how certain smells come to be associated with specific grapes or wines. A common one for Cabernet Sauvignon is green pepper, this is our first for eucalyptus. Great question! Actually, eucalyptus trees do grow in the Golden State and have for quite some time. It was during the gold rush that the trees were introduced into California either by Australians, or by others who had been to Australia. The question of whether the proximity of the eucalyptus trees to the vineyards might explain the eucalyptus-like, or medicine-like hints in the nose of a wine is one often debated. There are a couple of schools of thought on this. We had the opportunity to interview Chris Hatcher, Chief winemaker of the iconic Wolf Blass wines on our video podcast and posed a similar question. Here’s what Mr. Hatcher had to say,

“Cabernet from Langhorne Creek in South Australia is famous for having a distinct mint/ eucalyptus character. Winemakers have theorized that the character comes from oil expressed from nearby eucalyptus trees on hot days.” Mr. Hatcher went on to explain that the more modern view believes it is more about the specific clones of Cabernet grown in the region, as wines made in other regions from the same 14

COMMUNITYCAPTURED.CA

clonal vines have a similar character. The same minty character can also be smelt in some wines from California and Bordeaux. It appears, according to the latest research on the topic there is no evidence to conclusively prove a direct link between proximity of eucalyptus trees and the presence of that flavor in the wine.

SPRING INTO PARKDALE his year’s 6th Anniversary of Spring Into Parkdale’s Sidewalk Festival & Night Market was the biggest and best yet. With over eleven blocks along Queen Street holding this vibrant event, there were over 100 vendors and five dedicated Markets to explore. The kids could spend hours in the Kids Zone playing games, making crafts, listening to music, learning how to skateboard or climb aboard the Pirate Ship. The Community Zone featured local groups and agencies doing incredible work in the Parkdale Community. There was a Zero Waste Fair, a Flea Market and an indoor/outdoor Designers Market Patio Pop Up. The popular Little Tibet Market had everything Tibetan, such as arts and crafts, music, poetry and a fashion show. The perfect end to the day was visiting the Foodora Night Market, to experience the eclectic tastes of Parkdale Chefs.

B OOK REVIEW

FIFTEEN DOGS IS NOT JUST FOR DOG LOVERS Review by:

PETA-GAYE NASH ’m a cat person myself, but I find Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis endearingly witty, humorous, poetic and entertaining. Fifteen dogs overnighting at a vet are given the gift of intelligence, by Apollo and Hermes in a bet. Will human intelligence make them unhappier? In some cases, absolutely. “…Rosie, a German shepherd, stopped as she was licking her vagina and… wondered what had happened to the last litter she’d whelped. It suddenly seemed grossly unfair that one should go through the trouble of having pups only to lose track of them.” This Scotiabank Giller Prize Winner was one of the books selected for the 2017

Canada Reads and I had to read it myself when I heard about it on Metro Morning some months back. No small thing that a Caribbean word (albeit a “naughty” one) has made it in the book, testament to Canada’s acceptance of a non-mainstream culture. The book is an apologue of many lessons. Do our higher cognitive abilities make us more prone to domineering, aggressive and calculating behaviour? If dogs could speak our language, would there be a cultural divide, where true understanding would take as much effort as the divide between male and female, east and west, black and white? Is cooing to your dog actually demeaning?

CAPTURINGBETTERPH TOS

Human - Who’s a good boy? Dog - Oh, shut up already. One message really stands out: What’s good for the little people doesn’t apply to those in power. The leader of the pack prohibits the use of the dog language and insists the pack behave as they did before intelligence, like dogs, but he speaks the language privately with his soulmate. Even for a cat lover like myself, I learned a lot. Did you know dogs sometimes mount each other to show dominance? I had no idea. I thought it was only because…oh never mind what I thought.

REFLECTIONS apturing an interesting reflection requires a combination of luck and skill. As a first step, reflection photos require some sort of reflecting surface! As the sample photos illustrate, various surfaces can reflect, including water (1&2), glass (3), sunglasses (4), brass instruments (5) and grand piano tops (6). The composition of reflection photos often poses the interesting challenge of how to apply the “rule of thirds”: Should one show more subject? more reflection? or equal amounts of each? There is no correct answer - artistic choices abound!

HIGH PARK CHERRY BLOSSOMS High Park was gifted with beautiful Sakura Trees, also known as cherry blossoms, that come into bloom in late April to early May. They only last for a short time, but if you were lucky enough to get there, you were able to see the gorgeous clouds of white and pink flowers, hovering over the tree trunks.

RONCY PLANT FAIR

The Horticultural Societies of Parkdale & Toronto held their Annual Plant Fair, on May 12th, at Roncesvalles United Church. This Plant Fair was for beginning and sophisticated gardeners looking for that special plant to fill their garden with. There were herbs and hard-to-get perennials, as well as the “Green Elephant sale, local Artisans and Vendors. The Horticultural Societies of Parkdale & Toronto is a recognized not-for-profit organization, with the Plant Fair being their main fundraising event with all proceeds going back into the community in order to nurture all sorts of greening initiatives that make for a more livable city.
