Follow these steps to surprise your holiday guests with some tempting cheese varieties and new taste experiences:

Get creative with your platter
A serving plate is fine, but you might also use a wooden board, a slab of marble or a piece of slate.

Choose a variety of cheeses including a soft-ripened cheese, or 'bloomy rinds' as they're also known Then, add a semi-soft cheese, like gouda or havarti. You'll also need hard/firm cheeses like manchego or pecorino. And for a more tangy option add a goat's milk cheese. Round out the spectrum of flavours with a washed rind cheese and a blue cheese.

Elevate your cheese platter
To take your cheese platter to the next level, try serving something completely unique, like the PC black label Isle of Man Extra Mature Cheddar. This selection is made with locally sourced milk from the Isle of Man in the British Isles and is a full-flavoured cheese that is matured for at least 15 months. Once you've chosen the main features, enhance the platter with toppers, such as red pepper jelly, pesto, or sliced peaches.

Get your quantities right
For a party platter, appetizer, or dessert cheese plate, serve a small crowd around three to five types of cheese, and five to 10 types for a larger crowd. Calculate for approximately 30 to 40 grams of each cheese, per person.

READING RACKS Many people enjoy a good read before counting sheep. However, books, magazines and tablets can just add disarray if left scattered around the bedroom. To combat this type of clutter, add wall-mounted magazine racks or crates to hold your reading pieces. Here's how to create a couple of holders; Paint a wooden crate. Add stripes in striking colours for a reading rack that's functional and fabulous looking. After drying, cut your crate down the middle - you now have two spots for book storage. Install simple wall-hanging brackets to the edges of the crates and attach each to the wall with drywall anchors for a sturdy and safe finish. These are also great for stowing away toys in a child's playroom or towels in the bathroom.
BOOST BEDROOM STORAGE If every closet, nook and cranny in your home is occupied, it's time to look toward other avenues for order. Calm your chaos with under-bed storage units by transforming old dresser drawers into storage space. cozy STAIRCASE STORAGE
The space under stairs is often overlooked as a storage spot, since it's usually closed off with drywall. What most homeowners don't realize is this tricky triangle is typically hollow, and the "wasted" space can be utilized to store your family's odds and ends. For extra functionality, transform it into a closet if you're a DIY weekend warrior. All you'll need is a couple of days and these steps: FIRST, frame the door opening for your new closet. Use a drywall saw to create the outline that fits the pre-hung door of your choice. Secure the hinged side to the frame and use wood shims (thin pieces of wood that will properly align the door) to ensure it's a secure fit within the opening. NEXT, you'll need to create the closet walls inside. Measure the area of the closet and cut sheets of plywood or drywall to those dimensions (depending on how "finished" you'd like the final space to look). Paint the plywood in the colour of your choice and install it by nailing it to the existing studs. Just keep in mind that drywall will require a few extra steps, like taping, mudding and sanding before it's ready to paint. NOW, determine what size storage containers and hooks the space will allow and create shelves and cubbies. Using a nail gun, install ledger strips around the entire closet to support the shelves, making sure they're level. Secure with screws and install your painted shelves for a cozy - and contained - storage solution.

or many years now, I have had the pleasure of working with Jodi Bunker of Morinteriors, located in Newmarket, on renovations, new custom homes and preparing resale homes for sale. She has exquisite design taste and is absolutely amazing with colour selection. Her valuable decorating direction has greatly assisted us in the sale of many of our clients’ homes. She is especially effective at preparing a home “for sale on a budget”. I wanted to share some of her pointers with you. Always keep in mind that even though a potential buyer may say “We will need to update this”, if your home is harmonious, clean and tidy, the feeling is typically, “but I can live with this for now”.
• Add a strong accent accessory colour that works well with the home’s palette (red with golds, eggplant with pink-beige or sky blue with taupe for example). Some toss pillows, drapery panels and a big bold canvas can go a long way to make a room more desirable. • Remove dated items that are unnecessary, and slipcover those that remain. Surefit slipcovers are a great way to neutralize an offensive piece of furniture. A scary floral patterned sofa can destroy the look of an entire room.
To obtain a cost effective look that will help sell your home, consider the following:
• Replace cabinet hardware and builder light fixtures with more custom choices. Both are easily done and help to add sparkle to the home.
• Work with and not against dated finishes such as tile, hardwood, stonework and cabinetry, by striving for a cohesive palette. Do not try to paint the whole house with the latest colour trend and expect great results. This only works if your finishes coordinate with that colour. A fresh paint job can do wonders to make everything look clean and new, but if the trendy colour choice makes the ugly tile stand out more, it will do more harm than good. A cohesive palette, no matter how current, shows well, and will give the impression that you have a nicely finished home.
• Reduce clutter. An excess of personal “stuff ” can often hinder a sale leaving a potential buyer unable to picture their families’ living in the space without having to do a massive overhaul. • Update anything in need of repair. When the finishes that are hard to change are allowed to lead and drive the selections, the result is a home that is finished correctly, regardless of whether or not is suits one’s taste.
