n Ontario firefighter who fought for new legislation says he hopes that other provinces are taking note. By April 15 this year, any Ontario home that has a potential source of deadly gas, must comply by installing working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms outside all sleeping areas. Only the Yukon has done the same to date.

“Now that both the Yukon and Ontario governments have passed laws making CO alarms mandatory in homes with fuel-burning appliances, wood and gas fireplaces, as well as attached garages and carports I am going to do my best to make sure others follow suit,” says Gignac.

Laws or no laws, he points out that the need for education and awareness about the sources of this lethal gas never stops. Everyone should recognize the symptoms and the importance of installing carbon monoxide alarms to warn of its presence.

” It is an important step forward in preventing carbon monoxide deaths and injuries.”

Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because humans cannot smell, taste or see it. It can come from everyday heating systems, fireplaces and appliances that burn gas, oil or other fossil fuels. If devices are not working properly, or venting is cracked or blocked, CO can seep back into a home with devastating results. “My niece and her family did not have a CO alarm and it cost them their lives,” Gignac continues. “So my message to others is: Get your systems checked each year by a licensed technician; make yourself aware of the sources and symptoms of CO poisoning; and install approved CO alarms outside all your bedrooms.” More information about this topic is available at www.endthesilence.ca.
